Hatha Yoga

Santa Calling 2021
Thursday, Dec. 9, 6-8 p.m.
The Goochland County Recreation Advisory Commission is sponsoring a Santa Claus calling program for County children ages 10 and under. Applications will be available during the month of November. Make sure to send your applications early since Santa will only have so much time during his busiest season! Zumba
Mondays and Wednesdays, Dec. 13-Jan. 19, 6-7 p.m.
Zumba is a dance fitness format that will include pop, hip hop, and international music with dance rhythms that incorporate interval exercises. These dances will help you tone target areas on your body and absolutely increase your confidence as this class is a judgment free zone. This party is for everyone regardless of their fitness level. Tai Chi for Health

Karate
Students will learn techniques including kicking, punching, blocking, sparring and partner work. Emphasis is on philosophy and discipline of the martial arts to increase students self-confidence and physical condition. This challenging program is for ages 7 through adults and will help participants lead a healthier life. You can choose to take one or both days a week. Bulldogs: Plenty of familiar faces, but also much to prove

Last year was a difficult time for all high school athletic programs. Dealing with the effects on fan attendance, season length and practice limitations affected every team in a different way. While things aren’t completely back to normal, Goochland head coach Preston Gordon is just thankful his team can play under some relative normalcy compared to last year.
Having lost four seniors that all played a part in the team’s 6-5 record, Gordon will look to returning contributors like Gabe Liptak, De’Andre Robinson, and Jermiyah Mills to step up and take charge as the Bulldogs get set for a transition into the Jefferson District.
Arguably the biggest question will be who takes over the scoring production left behind by three-year starter Kameron Holman, who finished his Goochland career with 975 points. The team will also look for someone to step into the role Kyle Goff left behind. Goff was a jack of all trades who played a wing-forward hybrid role that allowed him to fit into a variety of different lineup combinations.
The early indications are for Liptak to step into the role of the primary scorer, having displayed high-end speed and slashing ability on the offensive end. Robinson is also a candidate for a bigger role on offense. The 6-foot-1-inch senior was a terrific post player last season, and his ability to crash the glass will be crucial for the Bulldogs.
Another player to potentially keep an eye on will be Conner Doersch, who started on the JV team last season, but saw action on varsity.
With a tough schedule in the Jefferson District, Gordon is prioritizing good communication defensively and limited mistakes on offense as some keys to the team’s success.

The Bulldogs will have a tough few tests to start off the season, with the season kicking off with a road game against Albemarle on Dec. 7 and two straight matchups with Maggie L. Walker on Dec. 10 and Dec. 15. With Liptak, Robinson and Mills all joining the team after participating in Goochland’s football season, Gordon can now start work with his full roster to determine what this team can do to improve off of last year’s success.

Experience will be key to success in 2021-22 season for Goochland

While the Goochland Bulldogs may have lost impact players across the board that were invaluable to their stellar 202021 season, head coach James Harris returns with a group that carries a similar identity to last year’s team. With a roster chock-full of experience, versatility and that same emphasis on defense that has made life a nightmare for opposing teams in the half court, the Bulldogs are reloading and ready to separate themselves in the upcoming 2021-22 season.
Last year’s team ran through a shortened seven-game regular season predominately through that defensive identity, but also because of their star power from seniors like Gabby Ragone, Megan Bowers, Shaylah Duff and Taylor Whitfield. Ragone will be a very difficult player to replace for Harris, as she left Goochland as a decorated heart-and-soul defender and playmaker. While it’s a tall task to replace anyone with the resume of a First-Team All-Region honoree and James River District Player of the Year, the Bulldogs will have plenty of studentathletes to choose from.
Goochland might just be the most experienced group in the Jefferson District this season, with seven seniors and six juniors on the roster. Some returnees of note include senior Emmy Paulin, a 5-foot8-inch forward with a reliable jumper and a knack for coming down with a rebound, and Erla Thorkelsdottir, who joined the team last season and proved to be a versatile defender on the wing.
Paulin was one of many players to show out in the team’s final regular season games last year, scoring 10 points and adding five rebounds in Goochland’s 64-38 home finale against Franklin. In those final two games, the Bulldogs outscored Franklin and Windsor by a combined 93 points before losing in the Class 3, Region B quarterfinals to the top-seeded Meridian Mustangs.
There’s also guard Jenika Carter as the team’s lead guard with the ball in her hands. Carter was a steady floor general for last year’s group, and she’ll undoubtedly be a reliable ball handler for the Bulldogs.
Much like their previous seasons, it’s clear Harris has established an identity of nonstop defensive intensity, positional versatility and movement off the ball. Questions remain about who steps into the shoes of past Goochland alpha dogs at the forefront of the Bulldogs attack, but there shouldn’t be any issues with this team’s ball movement or defensive effectiveness.
Goochland begins its season on a backto-back, with the opener on Thursday, Dec. 2, when they go on the road to take on Monticello High School. Their second game in as many days will be the home opener against Madison County.
