Fifth-grader Devin McCray, left, portrayed President Barack Obama and Cole Bashinski stood in for Gov. Mitt Romney in GES’s mock presidential election last Friday. Each candidate spoke at an early morning assembly, after which students in the second through fifth grades cast their ballots for president. At day’s end on Friday, President Obama had a wide lead, but not at GES.

GES holds its own presidental vote Romney bests Obama by wide margin By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

“Since I’ve been president there have been 29 straight months of job growth and we aren’t finished yet,” said Devin McCray, 10, as he portrayed President Barack Obama in Goochland Elementary School’s mock election last Friday. Fellow fifth-grader Cole Bashinski, 11, portraying Gov. Mitt Romney, also pitched job growth in his speech. “As president I want to put unemployed Americans back to work making job growth my top priority,” he said. McCray also stressed his energy plan,

support for education and record of bringing troops home from Iraq. “Let’s move forward and not backward,” concluded McCray. Bashinski touted his record as a successful Massachusetts governor and savior of the 2002 Olympics. “My name is Mitt Romney and I approved this message,” said Bashinski, winding up his speech. After a couple hours of voting, the results were in. It wasn’t even close. GES students picked Gov. Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama by a margin of 132 to 85, a 61 versus 39 percent spread. But Romney didn’t fare so well statewide in the mock election, losing by 30 percent in the polling of students taking part in the Every Kid Votes nation wide see Election > page 5

Habitat completes 18th home Contributed Report

Sunday Oct. 28, with Hurricane Sandy threatening, the 18th house that Habitat for Humanity of Goochland has built was dedicated and the keys were handed over to Lekesha D. Timberlake and her two sons, Akia, 14, who plays football and runs track in the spring for Goochland High and Nyjavion, 10, on Lowry Road in western Goochland. The dedication was opened with a prayer from the Rev. John Hall. George Price, President of the Goochland Habitat, introduced Steve Fleming, Chairman of the selection committee who in turn introduced Lekeisha and her family. Next up was Knight Bowles, who, after recounting the history of Habitat for Humanity in Goochland, which was begun in 1997 by several members of St. Matthews Church in Centerville, emphasized that many had given of time and goods to help Habitat over the years, mentioning in particular donations from West End Fabricators and for the last several years The Church of

the Nazarene who have shown up 25 plus strong, framed up the house, and erected the roof in two days on each house in June. He then presented some basic tools to the family to help keep the place in ship shape. The family was then given a Family Bible by Barbara Young from The Second Union Baptist Church. Then Patsy Garber, representing the Goochland Women’s Club, spoke of the gift they had given to Akia, having raised the money to buy the furnishings and arranging them in Akia’s bedroom, including at the center a large picture of his favorite team, the Chicago Bulls, and a Bulls bedspread. Following that Lekisha was presented with the keys to her new house by Shirley Chisholm, Chairman of the Habitat Board Committee for Family Nurture. Lekisha, 36, is a lifelong resident of Goochland County. She has been sharing a small place with her mother and is thrilled to have a place of her own at last. She is employed as a Teacher’s Aide at Goochland Elementary School. She spoke clearly, but with tears of grati-

tude in her eyes as she introduced her family and thanked everyone who had helped to build her house and most especially the forces that get these houses built, Knight Bowles, Ben Isbell, and Bert Henley, the last two of which are now 80 and still building houses. Then the Rev John Hall gave the Benediction and the celebration really began. Lekisha proudly took the guests on a tour of her new home which already has a thick, very green lawn that her father raked and seeded by hand, as he said there were too many rocks to use anything else. Lekeisha joins seven other Habitat Families in the immediate vicinity where the first Habitat recipient in the Lowry Road area, Eleanor Andrewes, is called the mayor. Habitat has one more lot on Lowry Road that will probably be built on next year. Habitat has land for a few more houses but is looking for land for future houses as well as anyone interested in joining them to continue this ministry in Goochland in any way they can.

10th Annual Salem 5K race raises money for Goochland Young Life Contributed Report

Nearly 80 participants came out for the 10th annual Salem 5K on Saturday, Oct. 20. Of the 77 finishers, Henry Jones posted the fastest time among the men at 18:03. Among the women, Sara Gretz had the best time at 22:32. The race raised $1,800 for Goochland Young Life. The runners and walkers got their start at Goochland High School and followed a route that took them over a somewhat rolling course down Bulldog Way and into the nearby Holland Hills neighborhood. This is the 10th year that Salem Baptist Church has organized the annual 5K. For the past three years, the church has chosen Goochland Young Life as the beneficiary of the net proceeds of the race.

A dozen local companies added their support to this year’s 5K. Financial sponsors were Custom Brick and Stone Corporation, Rt. 250 Sports Grill, Goochland Tees, Goochland Dentistry, State Farm Insurance, Hands-On Physical Therapy, Family Chiropractic, Managed Benefits, Von Schilling Lawn Care and Hudgins Dentistry. Pak Mail, a national shipping company with about 268 locations in the United States has arrived in Goochland County. Located at 42 Broad Street in the Broadview Shopping center, this Pak Mail is owned and operated by father and son Ron and David Fitzsimmons. The store opened around the middle of October and business has been good so far. “We’re getting between 20 and 30 people walking in on a daily basis to identify what services we have, said David. Fitzsimmons hopes that the store’s location and the services offered will be two key factors in making it successful in such a tough economy. “It is a tough time. I do believe that we are offering services that are needed in this area, said David. “It’s the location that we are hoping people will find us convenient. Your nearest option from our location is five or six miles away. You have to go down to Short Pump, Patterson Avenue or out to Oilville. Pak Mail offers a variety

of services, all related to shipping. No item is too large or small for them to ship anywhere in the world. They even have the ability to build a crate around an item so it fits perfectly and gets to the location safely. “We will ship anything anywhere in the world, said Don. “It doesn’t matter on size or weight. We will find a way to get it where you want it to go. We can ship packages through UPS, FedEx, DHL, and through the U.S. Postal Service. Full declared value coverage is available, so valuables are protected. Pak Mail also offers competitive monthly rental fees on small, medium, and large mailboxes. They also offer paper shredding, key cutting, faxing, and notary services. Packaging and shipping supplies are also available for sale in the store. “With the mailboxes we offer our customers an opportunity to accept packages on their behalf, said David. “We will be able to accept DHL, UPS, and FedEx packages which distinguishes our mail-

boxes from others. Pak Mail sends an email to the customer to notify them of mail or packages they have received. Both David and Don Fitzsimmons have a sales and marketing background. David, now a Henrico resident, worked as an independent sales represaentative in the Seattle Washington area. He decided to pull up stakes and move back to the area to pursue this business opportunity. Don, a Goochland resident, retired from Amstead Industries, in Chicago, as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. After he retired he worked for four years with Greenbrier Companies, in Lake Oswego Oregon, as Vice President and general manager of their manufacturing group before retiring the second time. “I guess I retired twice, said Don. “I was a little bored and wanted to do something and David decided to move back here. So we decided to pursue the Pak Mail franchise.

Fitzsimmons believes any successful business must focus on quality customer service. “It has to have the right individuals running the business, said Don. “In a business like this you have to be customer focused. You have to go out of your way to take care of the customer’s requirements in every way shape and form. A new business often requires its owners to work long hours. David typically works about 58 hours a week. “Our current hours are 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. I’m here a good half hour before and after. And on Saturday 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., said David. “I’m here a lot. Pak Mail expects business to increase with the upcoming holidays. “We’re open for business Monday through Saturday, said David. “We’re looking to serve people for the holidays. We hope to get busier around the holidays once people start finding out that we are available.

And the winner is . . . Unknown at press time. It’s always a challenge to write a column for a weekly that goes to press on Election Day but it’s a challenge the Gazette freely takes on each November. There are a couple different approaches one might take, the most obvious (and certainly most prudent) being merely to say we’ll report the results online when they come in Tuesday night, with particular attention to the vote in each Goochland precinct. Which we plan to do. Or we could claim omniscience and make predictions about winners and losers, at the risk of appearing foolish if proven wrong. So let’s go with that second option. We’ll make three observations about the national outcome, from most likely to least likely in the view of this writer. 1. Obama retains the presidency by the very slimmest of margins, Democrats retain the Senate, also by a hair and the GOP keeps the House of Representatives. 2. Romney wins by the slimmest of margins, Democrats keep the Senate, Republicans the House. 3. Romney wins the White House, GOP takes both the Senate and the House. Only the third option promises any real change from the past two

years of gridlock and political infighting. In option number one, if the President wins by a whisker and the GOP retains the House, Obama loses whatever “mandate” he ever might have had and Republicans will continue to stymie his platform, not to mention launching investigations of the recent debacle in Libya, which might prove embarrassing to a second term Obama presidency. In option two, Romney would face a divided Congress and have to deal with an intransigent Democratic Senate, unfriendly to his free-market ideas and certainly unlikely to dismantle Obama’s signature health care law. It almost makes one yearn for a parliamentary system like that of Great Britain, where the 2010 election would have resulted in the formation of a new government led by the GOP, so clearly did the voters reject the Democratic program then. But we don’t have a House of Commons or a prime minister. As humorist Will Rodgers said, “On account of being a democracy and run by the people, we are the only nation in the world that has to keep a government four years, no matter what it does.” So, it’s back to prediction number one. Look for four more years of gridlock at the federal level. -Ken Odor

Writer voices more Orapax objections It’s quiet this afternoon around my home. Sounds of wind and rain, occasionally punctuated by noises from my horses and dogs. Probably not unlike those experienced by my ancestors who moved to Goochland from Charles City County in the early 1700’s. The peacefulness of rural Goochland was a primary factor in my deciding to live here in my retirement years, but this tranquility for local residents is threatened by the request for a conditional use permit to operate a commercial clay shooting facility in our county. While I live outside the zone expected to be directly impacted should the Orapax proposal be approved, I nonetheless see Letters > page 7

These are very real and legitimate concerns of those whose properties lie close to the Orapax holdings. The

rest of us would simply have to wait until another landowner decided to take advantage of the Orapax precedent seek similar treatment. Second, the requested operation would likely lead to lead pollution. Despite the fact that others and I spoke about this issue at the September planning board meeting, it appears that nothing has been done by Orapax to mitigate or allevi-

I suggested consideration of requiring the use of lead-free ammunition, which would remove concerns about water in the James River becoming contaminated from the shot used in the clay shooting. This isn’t a new concept; indeed, in 1991 the United States Fish and Wildlife Service implemented a ban on the use of lead shot for migratory waterfowl hunting. Several

states, including Michigan and California, have in place restrictions on hunting in specified areas with ammunition containing lead. Additionally, most manufacturers of ammunition market lead shot alternatives. The research and technology are already there, as is the testing process for the designation of shot as “lead free”. Seems it would be quite simple to require Orapax to permit only

Folks are often pleased when the school system achieves good scores on the SOL as Goochland did. Skeptics claim that the schools teach to the test and its value is limited. A measure of educational success can be observed and sometimes measured in these statewide and national robotic competitions. It can be hard to talk about things other than politics , Orapax, TCSD etc... But I have good news, no

controversy , no complaints.. I actually have praise. The Goochland Schools did an outstanding job at this all day competition, winning several (I lost count ) awards. For me , the moment of my life came at the very end when the top award was given to the school that would go on to James Madison University in Dec in the State competition. That school from Division 1 was Byrd Elementary . Mrs Hawk and the Granny Helpers ( two girls and seven boys) , Mr. Payne mentoring on the important Leggos portion of the competition showed the importance of hard work and dedication,.

Lincoln: Behind the Scenes

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor Many after school sessions , even some weekend work in taking home this prize. For a very small school system and a Title 1 school competing against some of the biggest schools in the area, whose kids and teachers also worked hard, speak volumes about our schools , the students potential and community involvement. It was also positive that I chatted with Mr. Payne , school Board member and Mr. Bruce Watson (Director of CTE). I feel confident that on the shoulders of our teachers and important leaders and the community that our children will be in positions to succeed

in the 21st century. For a quirky guy like me, watching this unfold and to see and feel the excitement in the children , reminded me of an old saint’s thoughts that the heart sees the essence of things that the eyes can not. Richard Carchman Columbia

Veterans Day set for Monday at GHS The United States has just undergone another National Election. We may all think of it as an amazingly long, arduous, expensive and sometimes extremely abrasive experience. However, the right to choose our future leadership and the course we will thereby follow at all levels of government is one of our most sacred. These elections tend to govern our lives, for better or for worse, for extended periods before we can again elect to stay the

course, or change it. We are blessed in that these changes are guided by and determined by We The People. It has been suggested that we owe the creation of our Democratic Republic to America’s Founding Fathers and those who made the initial sacrifice in blood, toil and treasure to achieve freedom from those who would oppress us. The sustaining of our freedoms in The United States of America and throughout our world, where people are free, is above all else owed to those Americans who have gone in harms way and in all to many cases sacrificed their lives and future well being. For most of this nation’s history, we have honored and displayed great respect for these people, our military service veterans. There was however a period during which they were ignored, forgotten, treated with indifference and derision for their service in unpopular wars (Korea, Vietnam).

Our Nation has learned a great lesson in the last half century. While individuals may disagree with the fight we are engaged in, we must always respect and honor those warriors we send forth to act in support expectations and orders of our President’s and his/her representative. While improvement is possible, Americans today support their Armed Forces personnel and veterans better than at any time since WW II and possibly better than ever in our history. Well less than 1 percent of our nation’s population now serves in our Armed Forces, yet we have fought two wars simultaneously for over a decade each and only those engaged service members and their families experienced the sacrifices of their service. This Veterans Day, it would be good for each American to take the time to attend a Veterans Day Ceremony and see Letters > page 9

will! To me any self proclaimed leader is just in it for them and will either make up a religion or proclaim whatever they think their people want to hear to gain their favor. I feel many people have proclaimed a perverted heaven and lifestyle here on earth because they know people will want to be part of that, but Jesus offers a true relationship. Ever been deceived? Don’t feel left out or ashamed by it. God’s first created couple were deceived in the Garden of Eden. This country was built because people wanted religious freedoms. I love being able to experience different cultures and not cross an ocean or border. If a religious order practices unlawful acts here in America should they not be held accountable? I don’t think so! Within my lifetime of 55 years they have banned the advertisements of cigarettes in various venues. This was based on the health risk. Still many folks smoke. I feel the banning of campaign advertisements should be done on the same principle. I’m sick and tired of choosing from the lesser of two evils! Let each candidate put forth a contract with the American people. Let the contract be known to the American people. If not lived up to it impeach, or fire the liars! Just like anyone of us not doing the job our employer hires us to do. Take all that money

Come let us reason together, saith the Lord (Isaiah 1:18). To me this shows He is a personal Savior! To me it means we don’t get the chance to barter with God (what can we offer Him!) but it means to listen to Him for He knows us better than we know ourselves! One thing I’ve heard from both candidates is – I will. A football coach can tell his team to go out and score touchdowns. It won’t work without team support and beating the defense! To me our current coach has dropped the ball on doing things he said he’d do. I also believe his purposed plans aren’t good for the whole team. I pray our next coach (whoever they are) listens more to the team. I hear people say, “I don’t believe in organized religion.” I understand that statement. In all religions you have- the good, the bad and the ugly. Many a wrong thing has been undertaken in the name of various religions (example: Hitler claimed to be Christian). Some faiths believe in throwing acid on their women or even killing them if not doing what they think is right. To me anyone taking these types of actions in their own hands does not have faith in God (or their god) to do the correcting for wrong actions. In His time I believe He

The last part of Isaiah 1:18 it says “though your sins be as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Also from the Old Testament. I encourage you to read Isaiah 53 and you can ask yourself if he is talking about my Lord and Savior- Jesus Christ. You may sincerely think not, I sincerely think so. Goochland sweeps their way to JRD title Sandy does not prevent Bulldogs from blowing through tourney By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Even the wrath of Hurricane Sandy couldn’t derail a determined group of Goochland Bulldogs as they made a run through the James River District Volleyball tournament last week. First round games were postponed due to the storm and forced officials to schedule both semifinal and championship games in a one-day finale. Nevertheless, Goochland (23-0) swept through every obstacle to claim the championship over Bluestone 3-0 last Saturday night. In their quarterfinal opener, the Bulldogs downed visiting Buckingham 25-12, 25-18, 2514. The Saturday morning semifinals had Goochland hosting a rejuvenated Nottoway squad. The Bulldogs relied on strong serving and hitting to win 3-0, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21. “I was so surprised at how Nottoway came out and played and they kept us on our toes,” said Bulldog coach Jennifer Erixon. “The girls stuck with their game and kept hustling and got the win.” Bluestone had a tougher time with Amelia in their second semifinal matchup and the Barons needed five games to win the match. The victories set up the two familiar foes in the final where Goochland got off to a fast start in the opening set. “We knew this would be a tough game. It’s been that way every time we’ve played them, so we knew what we were up against,” Erixon said. Strong serving by Goochland’s Jordan Fleming, Jesse Leroy and Lainey

Kopczynski carried the Bulldogs to a powerful 25-9 victory. The Barons kept it close in the second game. After falling behind 7-3, Bluestone fought back and took their first lead of the day 10-9. The Bulldogs settled behind strong net play from Christina Mills and Lydia Smith to record a 25-17 victory. James River District Player of the year Carmen Sturdifen rallied her Baron teammates in the third game, and the lead changed several times before the Bulldogs finally prevailed by a score of 25-21. “I was kind of nervous because of the way we’d played against Nottoway,” Leroy said. “We came out and played our best and came out on top, and now, we’re champions.” Leroy has been associated with GHS volleyball for several

years, and said this year’s team is special. “We came together and bonded as a team, and our coach is fully involved and she wants us to play as a team, on and off the court.” The championship cleared the way for a repeat appearance in the regionals as host for Chatham on Tuesday night in a contest played after press deadlines. Erixon knows the going now gets tougher. “The competition will get better with each game, so we know we have to be ready,” she said. The key for Leroy is maintaining a level head. “We just have to keep our confidence up and not get cocky and we’ll be fine.” Goochland enters regional play with its best chances to succeed. As the top seed, the

“We’ll also work on defense,” Erixon said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way these girls are playing. Every time I give them a challenge they want it and want to improve. They have the mindset that they want to keep getting better.” Erixon was named James River District coach of the year, but she’ll wait to celebrate. “I’m just happy that the team won,” she said. “We’ve Bulldogs will host for as long as had a great season and haven’t dropped a set to anyone in the they keep winning. Bulldogs carry perfect JRD record into playoffs By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland entered its final contest of the regular season last Friday at Amelia minus their most effective weapon. Sophomore Jordan Jefferson sat out the finale with an illness that sidelined him for most of the week. The talented defensive back/quarterback’s absence didn’t slow the playoff bound Bulldog squad as they wrapped up the James River District Contest 49-28. “He will be ready to go for the playoffs,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said of Jeffeson. “He was sick all week and it was more important for him to be healthy for the playoffs…We will need Jordan on both sides of the ball come playoff time.” At Amelia, the host Raiders took the opening kickoff and reeled off a quick first down, but a bad snap killed the drive. That cleared the way for Reid Chenault, a freshman quarterback, to enter the game for his

first start. Chenault sped up the Goochland offense with a no huddle attack that caught the Raiders on their heels. “Reid did a great job at QB,” Fowler said. On the second play from scrimmage, Mason Engel worked his way down the Raider sideline for a 63-yard run that put the Bulldogs on top to stay, 7-0. Raider running back Antonio Coleman got the Amelia offense moving with several solid runs on the Raiders’ second possession. However, the Goochland defense led by a linebacking corps, that has recorded double-digit tackles for the past several weeks reacted and stopped Amelia on downs at the Bulldog 37-yard line. On the ensuing play, Chenault was picked off by cornerback Tyler Sale and the Raiders began a drive in Bulldog territory. Nathan Mattox ended that

potential threat when he repaid the Raiders with a pickoff of his own, snatching a Dylan Weaver pass on the Bulldogs 26-yard line. Amelia got on the board early in the second quarter when Coleman, who had over 100 yards in the first half, bounced off a tackle and sprinted 49 yards for a game tying touchdown. The conversion failed and Goochland maintained a 7-6 lead. Goochland answered when David Dyer scored his fifth TD of the season on a 14-yard run that gave Goochland a 14-6 advantage. But Amelia refused to go away. Taylor Sale gathered in a Weaver pass late in the second period and cut Goochland’s lead to 14-12. With seconds remaining in the first half, David Dyer scored from 3-yards out to give the Bulldogs a 21-12 halftime lead. Goochland opened the second half with a signature

drive that included big runs by Mattox, Dyer and Mitchell Brice, who capped the 61-yard drive with a 1-yard run and a 28-12 lead. The Bulldogs continued to drive the ground game and Dyer scored his third touchdown after Nathan Mattox picked off a Weaver pass in the fourth quarter and returned to the Raider 21-yard line. Trace Nixon gathered in a 9-yard TD reception to make the score 4212 midway through the final quarter. Coleman scored from three yards out late in the game for the Raiders and Weaver added a touchdown pass, but Connor Saunders answered for the Bulldogs with a 68-yard scoring run that made the final 49-27. Fowler felt a lack of practice time due to Hurricane Sandy reared its head early in the contest, but the team adjusted and finished well. “It was an unusual week because we only had two days

of practice due to the storms,” Fowler said. “We were rusty in the first half, but we focused better in the second half and we made a few adjustments and were able to find some success.” With the regular season campaign ended, Fowler and the No. 2 seed Bulldogs turn their focus toward the playoffs and a match up with No. 15 seed Windsor (3-7) this Friday night. “They are a good football team that has played a brutal schedule and we expect a great game,” Fowler said. Fowler is looking for home field edge making a difference as the competition only gets better from this point onward. “Fortunately, we get to play at home for at least the first three rounds if we can keep winning and that is a big advantage for us.” If the Bulldogs get past Windsor, the path to a state title doesn’t get any easier. “Our side of the bracket

is very difficult with possible games with [No. 7] Buckingham (8-2) in the second round and [No. 3] King William (9-1) in the third round,” Fowler said. “We are going to take it one week at a time and try to continue to improve. At this point in the season, you cannot overlook anyone and we are focus all of our energy into Windsor.” With a 10-0 record, Essex earned the top seed in the region. Liberty Christian rolls over Benedictine 55-12 By Arthur Utley Richmond Times Dispatch

With football playoff berths assured for both teams, Liberty Christian Academy of Lynchburg and Benedictine finished their regular-season play headed in opposite directions. Both teams feature highpowered offenses, but only Liberty Christian’s showed up for Friday’s matinee start at Benedictine’s Bobby Ross Stadium. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in the Virginia Independent Schools Division I poll and the reigning state champions, thrashed the third-ranked Cadets 55-12 and cemented the top seed for the playoffs that begin next week. The Cadets (7-3), who lost

to No. 2 Fork Union last week, will travel to Fork Union for a 7 p.m. semifinal contest this Friday. Benedictine is in postseason play for the first time in eight years. “LCA’s really good. It’s a physical football team, wellcoached and we’ve got to get better,” Benedictine coach Greg Lilly said. “They made plays early, and even when they turned it over, we weren’t able to capitalize. We’ll either have Fork Union or LCA (this) Friday night. It’ll be a fun game for the kids. It’ll be a good atmosphere; a good opportunity for us.” The Cadets had few opportunities Friday afternoon. They won the opening toss, but chose to kick off. The Bulldogs, 9-1

and averaging more than 48 points per game, scored in 21 seconds. Tre Bradley returned the kickoff 56 yards to the Benedictine 28. Quarterback Matt Lewis connected with top receiver B.J. Farrow on the next play for the touchdown, and Eli Boyes kicked the first of seven extra points. Benedictine ran three plays and punted. It went five yards, and LCA took a minute to go 35 yards for a second score with leading rusher Carrington Mosley covering 30 of those, the last 13 for the touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 in less than three minutes. On the ensuing kickoff, Benedictine’s J.D. Shobe fielded the ball at the 7-yard line, was tackled at the 37 and fumbled. Teammate Ramon

Jones scooped up the ball and raced 63 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked, and any hope of staying close disappeared. Mosley rushed for 132 yards and scored twice more in the first half. Lewis threw a second touchdown pass, this time to Dakota Kelly, with 24 seconds left in the second quarter. “Our coaches reiterate every day to come out, hit them in the mouth and make them quit,” Mosley said. “Just step on their throats and keep going after that. It’s a great mentality we have. We like to keep pressure on teams and keep pounding them so we won’t have to worry about anything in the later parts of the game.” The Bulldogs racked up 425 yards and limited the Cadets,

who were averaging more than 38 points per game, to 99 yards. Turnovers hurt the Cadets, too. LCA scored on its first two possessions of the second half after Benedictine coughed up the ball on consecutive kickoffs. “This was a game about finishing,” Liberty Christian coach Frank Rocco said. “Benedictine’s got a scrappy team, and there’s no way we could have backed off. We had to keep that mindset of keep coming at them. We executed the game plan today.”
