Goodenough College Annual Review 2014/15

Sustaining the Goodenough experience London continues to offer cutting-edge involvement with the most challenging issues of our times, drawing together the most brilliant minds in law, in medicine, in the arts and in the sciences. By providing a London home for exceptional postgraduate students, Goodenough College has aspired in its own way to mirror this focus, creating a worldwide academic community based on mutual understanding and respect, dedicated to fostering leadership, global citizenship and social responsibility. This ethos resonates as strongly today as it did at our foundation. Through the major developments of recent years, our commitment has been to sustain the unique environment we offer at Goodenough.

Goodenough College Annual Review 2014/15

Foreword

Jonathan Hirst QC Chairman of the Board

Fit for purpose Welcome to the Goodenough College Annual Review 2014/15. It is especially exciting to be able to present you with an overview of what I am sure will be remembered as a milestone year for the College. September 2014 marked the conclusion of a vital strategic phase in the refurbishment of the College. In fact, we have achieved a great deal more than a refurbishment. Both William Goodenough House and London House are now far better equipped than they ever were before to meet the requirements and expectations of high-achieving international postgraduates today and in the years ahead. Above all, we have a renewed sense of pride in a unique institution.

The Goodenough culture of participation contributes to the development of gifted people, among them many who will go on to become pre-eminent in their fields. This is at the heart of our purpose. We greatly appreciate the generosity of all those who have helped enable our College to fulfil this vision.

“ Both William Goodenough House and London House are now far better equipped than they ever were before to meet the requirements and expectations of high-achieving international postgraduates.

Amaka Ezuruike with her husband Chinedu and children Chinwendu and Chinonso From Nigeria PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, UCL School of Pharmacy I came to London with my husband to study for my PhD in 2010 and have been lucky enough to be a Member of Goodenough throughout my studies at UCL. In fact, both our children were born here. I feel very fortunate because if it wasn’t for the support of Members of the College, it would have been difficult for me to juggle having kids and working on my PhD. As parents, we enjoyed the Parents Club outings and the informal pot luck meals together with friends. Being part of an academic community made a big difference too. The Port Talks from distinguished speakers are exceptional, and I found the 3 Minute PhD & Masters Talk Fest absolutely fascinating. It has been marvellous to see how the recent renovations have transformed the College. As well as enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the buildings, I very much appreciated the effort put in to improving accessibility for wheelchair users and buggies.

Owen Richards

We are now starting a new stage in our lives as we move to Sheffield where I am taking up a post as a research scientist. I can’t thank the College enough for all they have done for us. And for new arrivals, my advice is just step out of your room and get involved. An incredible experience at Goodenough awaits you.

A global community with a shared focus One of the distinguishing features of the College is our ongoing commitment to developing a vigorous and engaged community. Each year, our Members bring their passion for their individual subject, as well as their perspective as world travellers. With Port Talks from the US Ambassador, the Canadian High Commissioner, the Mexican Ambassador and from the ViceChancellor of the University of Cambridge – on the subject of ‘Leading a Global University’ – our worldwide view was well addressed. Lively discussion is guaranteed at College gatherings, not least at the annual TEDxGoodenoughCollege. Once again, in an extraordinarily eclectic range of topics – from ‘Young Women and Political Engagement’, to ‘Creativity and Engineering’, and ‘Cancer Evolution’ – the underlying dynamic was in finding links and interconnections that illuminate our understanding of ourselves and our universe. It is continually fascinating to see how the quest for common ground, of finding similarity in diversity, is

interpreted so creatively at Goodenough. It is present in our Cultural Weeks when the College is alive to the sounds, tastes, fashions and contemporary issues of Members’ countries from around the world

“ It is continually fascinating to see how the quest for common ground, of finding similarity in diversity, is interpreted so creatively at Goodenough.”

It was also very much evidenced by an original comic opera ‘Too Hot To Handel’, directed by College Member Emma Rivlin (WGH 14-15), supported by College Members in the chorus. Hailed as a 4-star success by The Times newspaper, the opera marvellously combined the music of Handel with a modern-day love story. The creativity of another of our Members, Leo Jimenez (WGH 13-14), was recognised in the international 2015 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards. ‘I am Goodenough – Meet Huey’ won Gold in the Best Short Recruitment Video category. The ‘I am Goodenough’ videos were the first of their kind and made in collaboration with members of staff to give prospective new Members a flavour of the College. Winning such a prestigious award very much reflects the creativity inspired by the shared focus of our global community.

Sustaining the bonds that define us The bond we have with brilliant postgraduates continues to develop through our commitment to investing in scholarships and bursaries. In this we are enormously grateful to Goodenough’s generous supporters. For example, in March 2015 applications opened for the first Goodenough Education Scholarship. The new scholarship will assist a student undertaking either a Masters or Doctoral studies in Education while living at the College.

Our well-established Faculty Dinners reflect the importance we attach to developing ongoing relationships with London’s academic community and its leading professionals. In evenings dedicated to different disciplines, Members can invite their tutors or supervisors as dinner guests. These formal gatherings introduce new visitors to the ambiance of the College and provide opportunities for Members to discuss subjects of interest with senior figures in their fields.

John Hryniuk

In recognition of the contribution Goodenough makes to talented Canadian postgraduates continuing their studies in London, the Jackman Foundation has awarded CAD$100,000 to the London Goodenough Association of Canada (LGAC) to endow a Jackman Scholarship for the next 15 years and beyond. Canadian students are great contributors to the life of the College and we look forward to welcoming the first Jackman Scholar in 2015/16.

Now the refurbishment is complete, our task is to ensure that we maintain our facilities at the highest standards. A matched funding pledge of CAD$400,000 from the Molson Foundation has initiated The Molson Challenge which aims to raise a further CAD$400,000 from Canadian Alumni and friends. These funds will be put towards the continued upkeep of our facilities. Approaching 50% of the Challenge target has already been achieved thanks to the generosity of our donors.

Professor Jacqueline Ross MMus Guildhall School of Music and Drama London, UK For academics like myself, Faculty Dinners at Goodenough College are always special occasions. I’ve been lucky enough to attend several as the guest of Members of the College who have been my postgraduate students. As well as enjoying the splendid collegiate atmosphere of the Great Hall, the terrific food and conversation, the Dinners have given me a real insight into what makes Goodenough so special. You at once appreciate the international mix of students who are unfailingly polite, welcoming and buoyant. In the company of tutors and mentors, students confidently explore issues and topics as they flow around the table. As Members, they show a real sense of belonging – this is very much their College, in which they take great pride. Sharing and contributing to the Goodenough ethos comes naturally because it’s strongly in evidence all around them. The Faculty Dinners themselves show the lively academic commitment of the College in action. Above all, Goodenough provides opportunities to engage with your College peers. For music students this means taking advantage of rehearsal space (and a grand piano), the encouragement to give recitals, and to form ensembles with other musicians at the College. Goodenough leads by example. That’s what makes the relationships it develops over the years so meaningful.

“ The Queen, as your Patron, has asked me to write and thank you and the team at Goodenough College for all the support you have given to The Queen’s Young Leaders programme. The young leaders, from all over the Commonwealth, very much enjoyed their stay at Goodenough last month and were made to feel welcome and comfortable at all times.” Excerpt of a letter from Buckingham Palace, 30th July 2015

The Burn.

Connecting with the wider world At Goodenough we cherish our longstanding connections with the Commonwealth and are proud that annually 50% of our Members come from Commonwealth countries. We were delighted, therefore, to have been selected to accommodate around 60 outstanding young people who were the winners of The Queen’s Young Leaders programme. These awards recognise and celebrate exceptional people aged 18 to 29 from across the Commonwealth who are working to improve their communities locally, regionally or at a national level. In addition to the year-long mentoring and online learning aspect of the programme, the award winners were presented their awards by Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace. Also providing a venue for significant international gatherings and academic conferences, The Burn emerged in 2014/15 from its own major refurbishment programme with a new lease of life.

Owned by the College, and situated amidst beautiful surroundings on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, The Burn has provided a haven for students from around the world for over 65 years. Here, they can put everyday routine aside for a few days in order to enjoy a deeper focus on their studies. The Burn plays a key role in bringing together highly qualified experts in many disciplines, providing a tranquil environment in which to exchange views, ideas and insights. This has proved to be a winning formula and the major refurbishment now puts The Burn at the forefront of exceptional venues for academic retreats, conferences, and holidays. As we look ahead to the next academic year 2015/16, deepening and extending our connections with the wider world are very much a priority. Our starting point is always to develop new practical ways to add tangible value to every Member’s time in London. To this we are also seeing how the College and its Members can better contribute to the local community of which we are a part. With a global perspective, we are actively extending our links with students from the Commonwealth. I look forward to reporting in greater detail on these initiatives in next year’s Annual Review.

Wilhelm v. Rosenberg From Germany PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London and Chair of the Goodenough Members’ Council 2015/16 Coming from different cultures and specialising in so many different subjects, the relationships that Members develop here are unique. At Goodenough, the boundaries between countries and cultures disappear. It becomes normal that you see things from totally different angles, because we all have very different backgrounds. Taking part in College life also gives you a welcome break from your studies. And if your course gets stressful, College Members and staff are there to support you. Luckily this relationship between Members was not affected by the temporary closures of London House and William Goodenough House. For example, I have especially enjoyed being on the Goodenough Members’ Council. Working together with Members and staff, it gave us the opportunity to input ideas during the refurbishment, introduce and implement ideas into the yearly schedule and to help solve arising problems. Now that the refurbishment is completed, we have the benefit of modernised rooms with new facilities while the traditional architecture remains in the main communal areas.

Owen Richards

I will be studying at Imperial for another couple of years so I have plenty of time to continue enjoying so much of what the College has to offer: the Running and Hiking Club, Balls, Port Talks, cultural evenings and more, as well as being Chair of the Members’ Council for 2015/16 - I will certainly be kept busy!

PRIDE OF PLACE: A TRANSFORMATION COMPLETED

10

Goodenough College Annual Review 2014/15

Goodenough College has a great deal to live up to. Our prime location, our worldwide reputation as an exceptional postgraduate student environment and the pride felt in the College by so many Members and Alumni are privileges we can never take for granted. It is testament to College staff, detailed logistics and planning, and above all to our solid financial strategy that the ambitious projects for William Goodenough House and London House have been completed on time and in budget. The freshly gilded historic crests on the ceiling of the Great Hall and modernised heating add a glow to this important focal point for meeting, exchanging views, enjoying the company of new friends and celebrating with old ones.

Our refurbishment programme has given us the opportunity to improve accessibility including installing lift access to Freddie’s cafÊ. Catering facilities throughout London House have also been extensively upgraded. Modernisation of the electrical, plumbing and heating systems throughout the building have provided the essential infrastructure for the high quality accommodation now offered by our 303 single studybedrooms. All communal bathrooms have been upgraded. All bedrooms have new wash-handbasin facilities, high quality fittings, improved wired and Wi-Fi internet access, and adjustable heating. Goodenough can surpass expectations for this and future generations of students at the College.

The restored and refreshed Charles Parsons Library feels as welcoming as ever, but now with vibrant Rosoman murals reminding those studying there of the sense of purpose and heritage that is at the heart of our community.

Financial report

Richard Barker Director of Finance and Resources

Planning for sustainability A primary focus for 2014/15 was the completion of the London House refurbishment which was finished on time and within budget. Combined with the work to William Goodenough House the project came in at a final cost of £39.5 million against the budget of £41 million. College activities income (predominantly income generated from student rents) rose to £5.9m (2013/14: £4.4m) as a result of having both buildings open from September 2014. The closure in turn of each building in recent years has put financial pressure on the College which was managed by detailed financial modelling and strong financial and budgetary control. 2014/15 produced an operating surplus (excluding the major refurbishment costs, depreciation and financing costs) of £1.6 million (2013/14: £1.3 million). 2015/16 will be the first full year of Member occupancy following the refurbishment, an important baseline to measure ‘business as usual’ for this operation. The College continues to refine and improve its long term

Income financial strategy supported by the detailed financial plans used to secure the loan. These plans will ensure that funding is available to meet the costs of repaying the loan, of replacing assets when they fall due and of maintaining the College’s facilities at their current high standard. The budget for 2015/16 shows a further improvement in the College’s operating surplus position to £2.2 million. My newly-created role as Director of Finance and Resources brings together the College’s strategic financial management and the management of its estate, assets and commercial services. It reflects their inter-linked importance to the College’s financial future. I look forward to working with the Governors, staff and Members in delivering success in the coming years.

Andrew Molson (LH 01-02) Chairman RES PUBLICA Consulting Group Montreal, Canada Living at Goodenough College was one of my most enriching experiences. Being part of such a diverse international community, full of amazingly talented people, transformed my outlook. It is something which I strongly believe should be available to as many people as possible. I visited the College in early 2015 just after the refurbishment was completed. Both London House and Willie G looked fabulous. The works had clearly been planned with great respect for the familiar ambience of the College, as well as meeting the needs of today’s postgraduates. And it was all delivered on time and in budget – that’s very impressive. It is vital that those of us who have benefited from living in Mecklenburgh Square do what we can to ensure that the College can continue to provide those opportunities. The quality of the ‘Goodenough experience’ rests on it maintaining its outstanding facilities, which is why I was happy to initiate The Molson Challenge.

Jérôme Lavallée / Les Affaires

The Challenge is a matched giving programme to raise CAD$800,000 in Canada for capital projects at the College. The Molson Foundation has pledged CAD$400,000 which is being matched by CAD$400,000 from Alumni and friends. The College has enriched the lives of thousands of Canadians over the decades and this is a great way in which we can give back for the future.
