WOMEN’S EDUCATION IS INVERSELY RELATED TO CHILD MORTALITY According to data from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Journal of Development Economics, women’s education is inversely related to child mortality. The study reveals that women’s education leads to healthier habits and choices, including more time between the birth of children. From 1950 to 2010, all countries and regions included in the study saw an increase in average years of education and a decrease in child mortality rates, referring to deaths among children aged five or younger. The country with the highest increase in average years of education was Kazakhstan, which grew from an average of 2.6 years of education for women in 1950 to 11.3 years on average in 2010. That country’s child mortality rate dropped from 15 percent to 2.2 percent in the same time frame. Egypt saw the largest drop in child mortality rate — from an astonishing 42.5 percent in 1950 to 2.7 percent in 2010. The country’s average years of education grew from just half a year to 7.2 years.
