NEWS You Can Use Butter—People Know It’s Better! Earlier this year, the Los Angeles Times reported that butter consumption in America hit a 40 year high. This reflects a larger trend of home cooks looking for healthier, traditional alternatives to the trans-fats in margarine. Butter consumption skyrocketed by 25 percent in the decade starting in 2002. As low-carb diets have flourished in the past 12 years, and the public gained a greater understanding of the dangers of trans-fats (which boost “bad” LDL-cholesterol), butter has become more popular than many food experts would have guessed. As consumers look toward more natural alternatives to margarine and other unhealthy fats, butter will likely be popular for years to come.

Cancer Survivors at Higher Risk of Secondary Thyroid Tumors The journal Cancer reported that younger survivors of cancer other than thyroid, (ages 15 to 39) are 6.6 times more likely to die of secondary thyroid tumors than those with primary thyroid cancer. Researchers at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles, compared tumor characteristics, treatment and survival of primary versus secondary thyroid cancers in adolescent and young adult patients. They concluded that while the survival rate of patients treated for both primary and secondary cancers was 95 percent, the results show that changes may be required for screening young cancer survivors. Glucose a Factor for Dementia? In a clinical survey published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that, even among those without diabetes, higher glucose levels were associated with a higher risk of dementia. Worse yet, the glucose levels didn’t have to be very high. According to the study, “…increased risk was associated with higher glucose levels even at the lowest end of the glucose spectrum among people who had not received a diagnosis of diabetes.” This study reinforces other current research that demonstrates the damage brought about by excessive sugar and carbohydrate consumption. Go Green, Feel Better A recently published British study showed that when people moved to greener urban environments, they had significantly better mental health for at least three years following the move. Those who moved to less green neighborhoods showed significantly worse mental health in the year leading up to the move, but returned to their baseline after settling in. But here’s the catch: those moving to the greener areas had a shifting— and improved—baseline of mental health compared to those living near more concrete and fewer trees. Alcock I, et al. Choosing a Multivitamin? Check That Label! by Dr. Holly Lucille, N.D. Walking into any health food store in search of a multivitamin can leave your head swimming. Faced with dozens of different formulas, what should you choose? Check the label for these essential nutrients: Must Have Nutrients • Vitamin A is critical to healthy vision, hair and skin, and a well-functioning immune system. Look for the retinyl palmitate form. It is readily converted in the body to beneficial retinoic acid. • Vitamin C does more than support your immune system. It is required for collagen synthesis, the process that builds ligaments and tendons. Hectic, busy schedules can lead to a deficiency, too. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vitamin C is secreted by the adrenal glands during times of stress. Bioactive B-Vitamins Many things can rob your body of B vitamins: genetic conditions, poor liver metabolism, Crohn’s disease, chronic heartburn, common prescriptions or even simple aging. Look for a multi that contains a comprehensive B complex that includes:

• B1 (Thiamin) as benfotiamine is one of the most rarely used forms of thiamin, but one of the best. Because of its structure, it is five times more bioavailable than standard water-soluble thiamin. B1 helps you think clearly, stay ener gized, and keeps your blood sugar levels on an even keel.

• Vitamin B12 is essential for proper carbohydrate digestion and healthy blood pressure. But, according to the Annual Review of Nutrition, up to 15 percent of individuals over 60 are B12 deficient. Make sure you are getting enough by opting for a multi that contains methylcobalamin, a form of B12 that doesn’t need to be converted in the liver.

• Vitamin B6 is available in many forms, but only one is truly bioavailable—Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, or “P-5-P.” Since P-5-P doesn't need to be converted in the liver, it is absorbed and utilized faster and more effectively. Vitamin B6 protects nerve endings, relieves muscle pain, and reduces 6

levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that is associated with damage to blood vessel walls, increased cholesterol oxidation (making LDL-cholesterol “stickier” and more likely to clog arteries), increased risk of stroke and inflammation throughout the cardiovascular system.

• Methylfolate is the bioactive form of folate and may be especially beneficial for those who have trouble metabolizing supplemental folic acid. It’s especially critical for women who are pregnant or nursing. continued >

HEALTHY FATS You Need Now! The fear of fat has led to an

Avocados and avocado oil richly deserve “superfood”

The fact is, you need the right fats to build strong cells that repel viruses, strengthen artery walls, nourish hair and skin, help create necessary hormones, fuel the brain, shuttle nutrients and vitamins though the digestive system, and much more. If you’ve been misled into thinking fats are bad, think again. Here is a list of some of the best:

from pasture-fed cows is a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Conjugated linoleic acid is an especially beneficial nutrient found in organic grass-fed cows’ milk and butter. It has been studied for its ability to help the body fight food allergies, boost metabolism and balance blood sugar. But the source is everything; according to the Journal of Dairy Science, pasture-fed, cows had 500 percent more CLA in their milk fat than cows fed a typical grain-based diet.

epidemic of poor health and disease because we have reversed the ratio of our food groups from high animal protein/animal fat and low carbohydrates to high carbs and little or no healthy animal protein and fats. In fact, many Americans are consuming 60 to 70 percent of their meals as carbohydrates (mostly refined and processed), 20 to 30 percent unhealthy fats (omega-6's from vegetable oils, shortening and margarine) and only 10 percent from animal protein.

This is a fast, convenient recipe that allows you to have a delicious “breading” on your fish, but doesn’t boost your carb intake. Simply use ground, seasoned walnuts as your coating and bake. Adjust the recipe for a romantic dinner for two, or for a family meal. This meal is chock-full of omega-3 goodness. The cold-water fish supplies readily-used EPA and DHA, and the walnuts supply omega-3s in 8

status. Avocados—often thought of as a vegetable, but actually a fruit—provide high oleic acid and antioxidant content. A Mexican study found that avocado oil stops free radical damage in the mitochondria, the “engine” of the cells. Homemade avocado spreads make a great replacement for mayonnaise on sandwiches or wraps. Avocado oil also has a smoke point of 500 degrees Fahrenheit, so it is perfect for high-temperature stir-frying. It won’t produce free radicals at high heat like oils with lower smoke points such as olive oil, which should not be used for cooking.

Butter

the form of alpha-linolenic acid—a whopping 113 percent of your daily value in just onequarter cup. Serve with collard greens which are rich in vision-supporting vitamin A and bone-building K, free-radical fighting manganese and cholesterolbalancing fiber. Onions provide heart-protecting quercetin and sulfur compounds similar to those found in garlic.

Lard provides a very good source of pure fat and has an

easy-to-use consistency. Unfortunately, hydrogenated vegetable oils have replaced true lard in many processed foods including cookies, crackers and even frozen pizza. When cooking and baking at home, opt for lard from pasture-fed cows or pigs whenever a recipe calls for vegetable shortening. It contains healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats that improve your cholesterol levels and may help prevent type 2 diabetes. Those are benefits you won’t get from hydrogenated oils.

Coconut oil is now being recommended in weight-

loss regimens, In fact, a clinical study published in the journal Lipids found that coconut oil reduced waistline circumference and improved cholesterol ratio. In the study, women between the ages of 20 and 40 consumed 30 milliliters of either coconut oil or soybean oil for 12 weeks. They followed a low calorie diet and walked for 50 minutes per day. At the end of the study, the women consuming coconut oil had a lower body mass index (BMI), a smaller waist circumference and higher HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. The soybean oil group didn’t experience any of these outcomes. But these results are not really surprising. The fats in coconut are medium chain fatty acids, which are used directly by the body to produce energy.

Olive oil has benefits for your heart, skin, blood

pressure and mental well-being. Olive oil is full of healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants. Adding this tasty oil to your diet can reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering levels of bad LDL cholesterol and raising good HDL cholesterol levels. An Italian study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that consuming olive oil daily reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30 percent. Look for extra virgin olive oil, as it has undergone the least amount of processing and has the highest levels of beneficial compounds.

Sesame oil

is healthy and tastes great. In a Greek study, men who cooked with sesame oil reduced their average blood pressure to within a normal range. Researchers in Iran, comparing sesame and olive oil’s effects on cholesterol, weight, and waist circumference suggest that sesame oil may also promote weight loss.

1. Thaw fish fillets in refrigerator. Prepare a baking sheet with non-stick prepared foil or parchment paper. On a plate; mix the ground walnuts with the basil, paprika, salt and pepper. 2. Dip fillets in a bowl of buttermilk, turning over to thoroughly coat and soak the fish. Press fillet into walnut mixtue, coating both sides.

3. Place fillets in pan and bake at 375° F for 12 to 20 minutes or until fish flakes when cut with fork (cooking time will vary depending on type of fish and thickness of fillet).

Sesame Oil Collard Greens with Onion For a quick side dish, mix chopped onions and collard greens in a skillet, drizzle with sesame oil, and stir on medium heat until onions begin to caramelize and greens wilt slightly. Top with a 9 small pinch of sea salt and serve with fish.

Smart Omega-3s—Without the Oil! by Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum We all need omega-3s. These essential fatty acids strengthen arteries, improve cholesterol profiles, act as powerful anti-inflammatories, elevate mood, alleviate the symptoms of ADHD and menstrual pain, treat depression, and promote brain and vision development in infants and children. And yet, we usually don’t get enough omega-3s in our diets or daily regimen. It’s understandable. Getting the supplemental omega-3s you need from fish oil every day can be tough. It usually requires fairly large doses, which just isn’t convenient. But if you don’t eat a lot of fish or have found it difficult to keep up with your omega-3 supplementation, you’re missing out on some amazing benefits. Fortunately, there is a convenient way to get your omega-3s from fish. It uses a revolutionary process called “vectorization.” This unique alternative to fish oil supplements began when the French government employed three top lipid researchers to find a better way of providing omega-3 benefits without the use of intensive heat or harsh solvents. Vectorization uses enzymes and water, rather than solvents or heat, to extract omega-3s from the head of the fish. This is preferable to omega-3s extracted from the fat of the fish, where polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are typically concentrated. This process also supplies the natural 2:1 ratio of DHA and EPA you need. Vectorization immediately following the catch keeps the omega-3s bound to phospholipids—making them easier for the body to absorb and use. They are also incredibly stable, so with this particular supplemental form you don’t have to worry about rancidity or fish burps —a common occurrence with triglyceride-bound oils. 10

The DHA and EPA structure is exactly the way they exist in nature, because the processing is so minimal. Creating a Better Omega-3 During the processing of fish oil, heat, pressure and solvents change the natural position of the fatty acids. While omega3s bound to triglycerides are absorbed from fish oil, several grams must be used on a regular basis to achieve results. This is because triglycerides are such ineffective transport mechanisms. DHA and EPA are carried differently by phospholipids versus triglycerides. Attached to a phospholipid, these valuable nutrients maintain their original positions on the carbon chain—a position called “sn-2”. But intensive conventional processing used to manufacture fish oils changes the position to sn-1 and sn-3 on the chain. It’s like moving your best players on a team to where they can only be partly effective, instead of keeping them where they play best. Since phospholipid-bound omega-3s remain in their original positions on the carbon chain (sn-2), they are bioidentical—that is, a perfect fit—to the positioning of omega-3 fatty acids in the human brain. To me, that’s especially important, as I’ve worked with many people who have difficulties with concentration and well-being. It’s one of the reasons I think this form of omega-3s is so helpful. Fantastic Phospholipids But this revolutionary method provides even more than highly effective omega-3s. It also leaves valuable phospholipids intact. Because phospholipids are fats that contain phosphorus, they provide a variety of health benefits, including: • Phosphatidylcholine (PC) – protects mitochondria, the “engine” of your cells, from oxidative damage, and helps to keep your hearing and vision healthy and sharp. continued >

Good Health TM

Lifestyles

• Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) – helps build the myelin sheath that surrounds your nerve cells, keeping those signals firing properly. • Phosphatidylinositol (Pl) – also plays a major role in nerve and brain signals, helping to keep your brain healthy and your mood positive. • Sphingomyelin (Sph) – a strong supporter of overall brain health. • Phosphatidylserine – one of the most widespread phospholipids, often recommended as a stand-alone supplement for broad-spectrum brain health. Powerful Peptides Along with omega-3s and phospholipids, vectorization provides another benefit—peptides. Formed from amino acids, peptides are activated during the digestive process. If you haven’t heard much about peptides in your fish or krill oil supplement, there’s a good reason—they don’t have them. But here again, this revolutionary form provides more than the average omega-3 supplement. It supplies an array of bioidentical peptides that can boost your mood and protect your heart. It may also improve the absorption of the omega-3s. Convenience and Quality If you’ve been putting off taking your omega-3s lately, it’s time to rediscover the brain and heart benefits you’ve been missing. Vectorization provides DHA and EPA which are naturally bound to phospholipids for better absorption within the brain. It also gives you peptides that neutralize free radicals and support immune, digestive, joint and cardiovascular health. Because vectorization uses the head of the salmon, you won’t have to worry about the PCBs found in many fish oils that process their product from the fat or liver of the fish—areas that are notorious for being exactly the places where the highest levels of these dangerous compounds accumulate. This unique manufacturing process also creates an easy-to swallow tablet instead of large oil-filled capsules, making for a convenient supplement that's easy to take. You need just one per day, so getting your omega-3s this way is not only convenient—it’s just plain smart!

Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., is a recognized leader in the natural research and treatment of pain, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Trade In Your Trans-Fats There was a time when margarine and other sources of trans-fats were considered the “healthy” alternatives to butter and lard. Today we know better. (Some of us always knew: allegedly, Julia Child kept margarine on hand only to serve to her enemies.) Margarine is made from hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are chemically modified by adding hydrogen to make them more stable. This, in turn, creates trans-fats. Hydrogenation makes the fats difficult to break down in the body. These fats can't be used for building healthy cells, making arteries flexible, helping create valuable hormones, or any of the things natural fats do in our diets. What’s more, hydrogenated oils like those in margarine are from vegetable sources that are overly-rich in omega-6 fatty acids and that have only been a major part of our diets for the last 50 or 60 years. They are easily damaged by heat and chemical processing and that leaves them unstable, rancid and ready to do major damage oxidative damage to the cells of the body. Plus, even small amounts of this so-called “healthy” choice has actually been found to increase the risk of heart disease by up to 23 percent in younger women, according to a review published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In fact, long-term consumption of trans-fats increased risk of coronary heart disease regardless of other dietary factors, according to research reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The Food and Drug Administration is moving to ban trans-fats from processed foods, so it’s time on the shelves may be limited. Do your heart and taste buds a favor—eat real butter and real fats instead.

Pomegranate juice has become very popular over the past few years, both as a refreshing drink and for the health benefits it provides. While the juice is delicious and healthy, it doesn’t supply all of the nutrients pomegranate has to offer. For that, you need to look for pomegranate seed and seed oil extracts. The Seeds of Health Pomegranate juice, and especially fermented pomegranate juice, has shown incredible benefits. However, most commercial brands of pomegranate juice are very high in calories and sugar—and it is difficult to consume enough juice to have truly therapeutic value. Plus, if you are only drinking the juice, you’re missing out on some of the most important compounds in the fruit. Research shows that the best results come from the pomegranate seed and seed oil. One of the reasons for this is that seed oil extract is rich in punicic acid (considered an omega-5 fatty acid) which has some of the same actions as tamoxifen—an anticancer drug—but without the side effects. Tamoxifen, like many drugs, is risky. It can contribute to blood clots, endometrial cancer, early menopause and causes a higher risk of cataracts.

Best for Breast When it comes to breast health, pomegranate seed oil has emerged as a strong natural therapeutic agent with anti-tumor properties. This is an important consideration for anyone with a personal or family history of breast cancer. Punicic acid from pomegranate seed oil has the ability to inhibit estrogensensitive and estrogen insensitive breast cancer cells. In fact, in a cellular study published in the International Journal of Oncology in 2010, it inhibited the proliferation of two types of cancer cells by 92 percent and 96 percent respectively. In that same study, punicic acid also supported apoptosis (programmed cell death) in two types of breast cancer cells by 86 percent and 91 percent. One of the reasons for pomegranate seed oil’s anticancer activity, especially in breast tissue, it that it is an aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase is an enzyme that affects the body’s steroid metabolism. Imbalances have been linked to both breast and prostate cancer. In other research published in the journal continued >

Good Health TM

Lifestyles

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, pomegranate extracts—including seed oil extract—were found to inhibit aromatase activity by 60 to 80 percent. This study also found that pomegranate seed oil showed a 90 percent inhibition of MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The researchers stated that pomegranate has excellent chemopreventive potential— either on its own or as an addition to conventional therapy—meaning less dependence on potentially dangerous drugs. Prostate Protection In a clinical study published in Current Urology, men with increased levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) consumed 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily. High levels of PSA may indicate the presence of prostate cancer, or at the very least, an enlarged prostate. After two years, PSA levels declined in 35 percent of the patients and 2 percent of the patients showed a 50 percent decline in PSA levels. The men who continued to drink pomegranate juice daily after the study continued to see lower PSA levels. Another study published in Growth Hormone & IGF Research showed that pomegranate induced programmed cell death (a process called apoptosis) in prostate cancer cells. And research reported in Investigational New Drugs found that pomegranate fractions inhibited the growth of prostate tumor cells. Zeroing in on Colon Cancer Pomegranate seed oil also shows great promise for enhancing colon health. In laboratory studies, the nutrient-rich oil reduced inflammatory activity in colon cells that can lead to DNA damage and the potential for tumor growth. Interestingly, the oil was very effective, even at low doses.

Help for Hypothyroidism If you’ve been feeling sluggish, gaining weight unexpectedly, have aching joints or suffer from mental fogginess but don’t know why, it could be your thyroid. Thyroid problems are on the rise, yet they are often misdiagnosed and undertreated. People are told they are out of shape, depressed, even erroneously diagnosed with chronic fatigue when in fact it is their thyroid at the root of the problem. The most common problem is hypothyroidsim—also known as an underactive thyroid. People with low thyroid hormone levels can experience a frustrating constellation of symptoms. Because of this, sub-clinical hypothyroidism is often misdiagnosed and left untreated. Fortunately, enhancing thyroid function may be as simple as providing your thyroid with the nutrients it needs. Even with a “normal” thyroid test result, you may still have a host of symptoms. Fortunately, iodine and L-tyrosine can help. 14

The Iodine Connection One often overlooked cause of hypothyroidism is a lack of iodine. Iodine as a medicine was once very common, but dietary iodine intake in many parts of the country was historically quite low. It wasn’t until after World War I that medical professionals advocated for iodine enrichment in the diet.

Most people think that iodine is adequately supplied in enriched table salt. However, many people have cut Fatigue Dry, Brittle back on table salt Hair/Hair Loss or are skipping it altogether. Compounding the issue is the nature Constipation of processed foods. Most food manufacturers don’t use iodized salt. Their Mental products— “Fogginess” especially frozen pizzas, appetizers, and processed Increased Breast meats—are laden Poor with unhealthy Cancer Risk Circulation types of sodium instead.

Additionally, chlorine, fluoride and bromide—toxins which lower iodine levels in the body by blocking iodine receptors—are increasingly consumed from foods or through environmental exposure. The good news is that iodine is being rediscovered by researchers who suggest that, beyond treating thyroid disorders, boosting iodine consumption could also reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer, and promote overall well-being. Of course, like many nutrients, the current minimum daily requirement of 150 mcg of iodine is simply too low. Typically, Americans consume 240 mcg per day—just enough to prevent goiter, but not enough for beneficial health effects. People in Japan consume more than 12 mg (12,000 mcg) of iodine per day. That’s 50 times more than the average American intake. Life expectancy in Japan is 83 years, while in the United States it is about 78 years. And infant mortality is half that of the United States. Another sobering statistic— America faces almost three times the number of deaths from breast cancer than Japan. Studies have shown a connection between thyroid abnormalities and breast cancer—and iodine intake is likely a factor. Today, one in eight American women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. Compare that to thirty years ago, when iodine consumption was much higher and only one in 20 women developed breast cancer. L-Tyrosine L-tyrosine is a natural amino acid found in legumes, cheese and many proteinrich foods. Paired with iodine, it is essential for the creation of thyroid hormones. Insufficient levels of either nutrient cause a decrease in the formation of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine continued >

thyroid is under-performing. Looking beyond a simple TSH test can give you and your health care provider a more accurate picture of how well your thyroid is functioning. A much better approach is to look at the symptoms you are experiencing, your family and personal history, and the results of additional thyroid tests, including testing for T4, free T4, and antibody tests like anti-TPO and TgAb which can give a better assessment of T3 and T4 production. Because iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones, some alternative practitioners may also use iodine patch testing to check for a deficiency.

Testing Thyroid Function Typically, doctors test thyroid function during your yearly physical. The problem is, most rely on a single blood test that measures thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Since TSH rises as thyroid function declines, levels over 5.0 mU/L are considered an indication of hypothyroidism. Yet many people with TSH values between 3.04 and 5.0 mU/L—values considered normal under current guidelines—have symptoms that indicate a sluggish thyroid. This means that many symptomatic people with subclinical hypothyroidism go undiagnosed and untreated.

If low thyroid function is detected, iodine and L-tyrosine can improve thyroid hormone production for greater energy levels, brain function, memory, and metabolism. In other words, these nutrients don’t just improve your thyroid—they help you live your vibrant best!

Since standard TSH testing is not an exact science, it’s a good idea to ask for further testing if you think your

Sinus Rescue by Chris Kilham When your sinuses are stuffed or you feel short of breath from allergy or asthma symptoms, you want relief fast. The problem is, many conventional solutions can make you feel jittery, tired or simply “off.” Fortunately, powerful, concentrated plant oils from eucalyptus and myrtle can help clear your sinuses, fight inflammation, stop bacterial infections and open your bronchial airways. It’s an herbal combination that’s perfect for anyone who suffers from sinusitis, seasonal allergies, asthma or other upper respiratory ailments. Better Breathing with Eucalyptus Eucalyptus is one of the most wellknown plant oils for clearing the sinuses. The concentrated oil of Eucalyptus radiata contains 1,8 cineole, alpha pinene, and limonene—compounds with strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. This natural plant oil thins mucous so it can drain more easily. Its natural anti-bacterial power means that it may also help to treat sinus infections. Eucalyptus may help those with chronic asthma, too. A German study that appeared in the journal Respiratory Medicine found that 1,8 cineole was effective for relieving bronchial asthma. At the Medical Outpatient Clinic at Bonn University Hospital in Germany, researchers compared the equivalency of 1,8 cineole from eucalyptus oil to

steroids in patients with severe asthma. By the end of the twelve-week study, 12 of the 16 patients in the cineole group versus 4 of the 16 patients in the placebo group were able to reduce their use of conventional steroid anti-inflammatory asthma medicine.

Powerful Plant Oils These effective eucalyptus and myrtle oils are highly concentrated. Just be certain that the plant oils you use are certified to be the correct plant species, contain beneficial key compounds and are safe for internal use.

Bacteria-Busting Myrtle Another excellent plant for protecting your sinuses is myrtle (Myrtus communis cineole). Like eucalyptus, myrtle oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Myrtle was traditionally used in many lands, including Ethiopia, which led researchers in that country to explore the plant’s ability to fight harmful bacteria. They found that the herb’s oils had an inhibitory effect on many common—and dangerous— bacteria, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus, the cause of staph infections.

Breathe Easily, Naturally Frequent sinus infections and chronic congestion can get in the way of enjoying life to the fullest. They not only cause pain and discomfort, they interfere with your ability to savor your meals, to be active, and to smell the flowers. But the powerful concentrated plant oils from eucalyptus and myrtle can effectively help to clear your sinuses, prevent asthma symptoms and stop bacterial infections. They’ll help you breathe easily, without making you feel revved up or ready to take a nap.

Myrtle also contains 1,8 cineole. Aside from its protective power, this compound also stimulates tiny, fluttering finger-like projections in the sinus cavities called cilia. This can help promote the flow of mucous, so your sinuses clear faster and you feel comfortable sooner.

Count on Comfrey If you’re athletic and on-the-go, you probably suffer from a few injuries every now and then. Whether these mishaps include sprains, muscle aches, cuts, bruises or other minor trauma, the trick is to deal with them safely and quickly so you can get back to your active lifestyle. In times past, comfrey was considered a powerful plant and a remarkable natural intervention to relieve pain and hasten healing when applied topically or taken as a tea. The problem

Soothing and Healing So how does comfrey actually work? Aside from its ability to soothe pain, comfrey helps to prevent damage to tissues and boosts tissue regeneration. It quickly and efficiently rebuilds damaged blood, bone and flesh—the exact response you need for wounds, sores, burns, cuts, scrapes, bites, stings, rashes, swollen tissue, sprains and broken bones. In fact, the popular names for comfrey give you a good idea of what it has been used for: knitback, bruisewort (wort meaning plant), knitbone, and boneset. Most comfrey plants are technically known as Symphytum officinale. “Symphytum” is a Latin word meaning “to make grow together.” The term “officinale” refers to the fact that this plant was used for botanical remedies and most likely kept in a monastery storeroom—an early form of medieval pharmacy. Safe and PA-Free Thanks to modern cultivation, there is now a unique cultivar of comfrey that avoids the problem of liver toxicity altogether. This variety, known as Symphytum x uplandicum NYMAN, has been designated as “Trauma comfrey” by the German health authorities. This designation as a specialized species is similar to a patent.

was, comfrey contains compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) which are toxic to the liver. Because of this, the herbs’ oral use was banned in the United States in 2001. But concerns over comfrey’s topical use persisted, with some doctors fearing that the PAs in creams and ointments could be absorbed through the skin. Fortunately, new developments have resulted in a topical comfrey cream that does not contain any toxic compounds. Researchers at the Department of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at Charles University in Prague have found that this PA-free formula is even safe for young children over the age of four.

This singular form of comfrey has been specifically cultivated to be free of PA content. Because the roots typically contain higher levels of PA, only the aerial parts of the plant—the leaves, stems and flowers—are used since they contain little, if any, PAs. This uniquely safe cultivar’s lack of toxicity has led to its approved use in the U.S. But, just as important as what your comfrey doesn’t include is what it does provide. Three of the major players in comfrey’s team of winning compounds are allantoin, choline and rosamarinic acid. • Allantoin quickly stimulates the rebuilding of cells and regenerates damaged tissue. It can travel through the skin all the way to tendons, cartilage and bone. continued >

• Choline helps injured blood vessels and nerve endings recover faster and improves the pumping of healing blood through inflamed tissues. • Rosmarinic acid fights inflammation, stops fluid loss as a result of injury and slows down cell damage. In clinical studies of pain and injury, a topical Trauma comfrey cream has shown remarkable capabilities. It eased blunt sports injuries and bruises, reducing pain and healing time in a Czech study by 50 percent. In another clinical trial reported in the German Journal of Sports Medicine, Trauma comfrey soothed knee joint distortions, improved mobility and completely relieved pain in most study participants in just 10 days. Another study of 220 osteoarthritis patients compared the efficacy of a comfrey cream with an identical placebo. Participants were divided into two groups, a treatment group and a control group, applying comfrey cream or a placebo three times a day for 21 days. At the end of the study, the comfrey group showed significant improvement in pain, inflammation, stiffness, mobility and quality of life compared to the placebo group. How can you get these same benefits? Look for a comfrey cream that is PA free, specifically made with Trauma comfrey. And make sure it contains active levels of allantoin, choline and rosmaric acid to promote rapid healing and pain relief. Avoid creams made with olive oil, beeswax or petroleum compounds that can prevent absorption. To get the full benefit from comfrey’s healing powers, choose a cream designed to penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin where it can directly impact your joints, muscles and tissues.

Setting the Record Straight: You Still Need Supplements About every six months or so, you’ll see a report talking about the dangers of supplements, or how they don’t do any good, or how they are completely unregulated. Lately, multivitamins have been considered the real culprit, with much-publicized experts saying that at best, they do no good at all, and at worst, can actually be harmful. However, those with a more even-keeled perspective have been less willing to make sweeping generalizations about supplements. Dr. Michael F. Roizen, MD, writing in U.S. News and World Report noted that the media missed some key points from these studies: “…the news media ignored the significant 8 percent reduction in non-prostate cancers for men over 50, significant 18 percent reduction in non-prostate cancers for men over 70 and the non-significant (because they didn’t study enough people) 11 percent reduction in cardiovascular events and deaths in those taking a high-dose vitamin regimen compared with a low-dose one—yes, everyone in that study received vitamin supplementation.” According to Dr. Roizen, the media also left out “the importance of vitamins to eyesight and their role in preventing 40 percent of autism, 60 percent of childhood cancers (up to age 6) and over 80 percent of congenital defects.” The value of multivitamins was also noted by a landmark Harvard review. The study, which appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that all adults need to take a daily multivitamin as part of a comprehensive strategy to prevent chronic disease. For anyone with a hectic life, imperfect food choices, or family histories of heart disease or cancer, well-crafted supplements can—and should—be part of a daily regimen. Pain Free, Naturally! by Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum Staying active is one of the best ways of staying young. Unless, of course, the very idea makes you wince in pain because you’re thinking of how you felt after your last workout. If you suffer from inflammation after going for a 5-mile run, working in your garden, or due to more serious conditions including rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, you may be tempted to take aspirin, ibuprofen or some other over-thecounter or prescription pain reliever. Even if you’ve heard that they can be bad for your stomach lining and possibly cause serious damage to your heart or liver, you might wonder, “What else can I do?” The answer is easier than you think. Simply skip the synthetic drugs and let nature help. There are amazing ingredients that fight pain quickly and effectively—and that don’t put your health at risk. Healing Herbs Curcumin, a compound from turmeric (Curcuma longa), can dramatically reduce inflammation and pain by inhibiting COX-2 enzyme activity, protect you from oxidative stress, and prevent muscle damage to your body before exercise. It also helps to alleviate pain after physical activity. Not all curcumin extracts are identical, however. Standard extracts can be difficult for the body to absorb and usually require massive doses to be effective. The best form of curcumin extract is reduced to a very small powder and blended with turmeric oils for improved absorption and blood retention. Studies demonstrate that this unique form of curcumin, BCM-95, is up to 10 times more absorbable than standard extracts.

There are amazing ingredients that fight pain quickly and effectively— and don't put your health at risk.

Another “must-have” ingredient for an active life is boswellia (Boswellia serrata). This Ayurvedic herb is a perfect partner to curcumin. It blocks inflammation along the 5-LOX pathway and also stops damage to your knees and other joints. 20

Like curcumin, it’s important to get the best extract. The most effective boswellia contains naturally higher levels of acetyl-11keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA). When it comes to inhibiting inflammatory leukotrienes, AKBA is really the heavy lifter. However, a quality boswellia extract should screen out betaboswellic acid, a compound that would otherwise increase inflammation. A specific boswellia extract, BosPure, does exactly that. Do these botanicals really work? You bet! In fact, a unique combination of BCM-95 curcumin and AKBA-rich BosPure boswellia was actually judged to be superior to the prescription arthritis drug, celecoxib (the generic of the brand name Celebrex), in a clinical study of osteoarthritis.

The herbal combination relieved pain, improved walking distance, and reduced joint tenderness scores better than celecoxib. Because of its effectiveness and safety profile, it was considered a much better approach to treating active osteoarthritis than the synthetic drug. continued >

Good Health TM

For pain relief, 64 percent of those taking the curcumin and boswellia combination versus 29 percent in the drug group improved to such a high degree that they were able to move from having “moderate to severe arthritis” to “mild to moderate arthritis.” Of course, these botanicals also help heal joint damage that’s occurred over time, so even if you haven’t been active for a while, they can help you get moving again. Pain and the Brain Along with BCM-95 curcumin and BosPure boswellia, you need an amino acid combination called d,l-phenylalanine (or DLPA). The “d” form of phenylalanine inhibits the breakdown of enkephalins— peptides related to “feel good” endorphins—which are associated with keeping a positive mood. It also relieves muscle pain in its own right. The “l” in d,l-phenylalanine boosts natural mood-elevating chemicals in the brain, including dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine. A positive outlook is incredibly important when it comes to dealing with inflammation and pain, so this amino acid combination is essential. The final ingredient you need in a natural pain formula is nattokinase. This purified enzyme extract from natto (a fermented soybean food), helps carry the other ingredients through the bloodstream so they can get to where they’re needed most—including your sore muscles and joints. In the process, nattokinase also decreases plasma levels of fibrinogen, which then increases circulation to reduce muscle pain. Being active is wonderful. It helps your heart stay strong, keeps extra pounds in check, and improves your mood and mental outlook. But in order to live to the fullest, you need

Conquer Diabesity with Curcumin by Dr. Ajay Goel, Ph.D. To say that we have an epidemic of obesity and diabetes in America is no longer a headline. It’s a daily reality. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that, as of 2010, over 35 percent of American adults and over 16 percent of American children and adolescents were obese. Another 33 percent of American adults are not yet obese, but still classified as overweight. Elevated blood sugar and type 2 diabetes have become common as well. The CDC reports that approximately 35 percent of Americans age 20 or older have pre-diabetes. That number soars to 50 percent for Americans over the age of 65. And that’s not even counting those who have undiagnosed diabetes. Diabetes and obesity often occur together. Dubbed “diabesity,” they also share a common cause—chronic inflammation. In fact, obesity is associated with an increase of pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) and the activation of NF-kB (a protein complex that responds

to inflammation), in fat, muscle and liver tissue. However, stopping the over-activation of these factors also helps the body prevent insulin resistance, so circulating blood sugar is less likely to be stored as fat. Fortunately there is help on the horizon from a natural source—curcumin from the curry spice turmeric (Curcuma longa). Existing evidence reported in the journal BioFactors shows that it can help your body regulate blood sugar levels, burn fat more efficiently for energy and stop the inflammation that expands existing fat cells or creates new ones. The Fat Cell Factor The review in BioFactors explains that because curcumin reduces the expression of pro-inflammatory markers, including TNF-a, it inhibits the adipocyte (fat cell) differentiation that leads to fat growth. Fat cell growth and expansion occurs the same way as tumor cell growth—through angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels that “feed” fat cells. Curcumin stops this expansion of fat cells.

Balancing Blood Sugar In another study reported in the journal Endocrinology, curcumin decreased glucose levels in diabetic mice in less than two weeks of treatment without affecting levels in lean, healthy mice. Here again, there were significant weight differences between the two curcumin-fed groups versus the diabetic and obese control group that was not fed curcumin. Curcumin was associated with less body fat and more lean muscle mass in both of the curcumin groups, and the curcumin-fed groups actually lost weight just two weeks into the study. Researchers reporting in the American Journal of Physiology believe that because curcumin moderates inflammation caused by a high-fat diet, it also inhibits the creation of fat cells. Additionally, curcumin inhibits the infiltration of a specific type of white blood cell known as a macrophage into adipocytes, which ramps up fat cell production. It also increases levels of adiponectin, an important protein that keeps lean bodies lean and regulates blood sugar levels and metabolism. In fact, a study published in Obesity Reviews stated that boosting levels of adiponectin is considered a potential treatment for type 2 diabetes on its own. Historically, the challenge of using curcumin therapeutically has been that it is poorly absorbed by the body. Because of this, large amounts needed to be consumed for any apparent benefit. However, a recent development in curcumin extraction has changed that.

In a scientific study published in the Journal of Nutrition, animals fed a high-fat diet were divided into two groups: one supplemented with curcumin and the other without. In the curcumin group, supplementation appeared to stop the growth of fat tissue and prevented fat deposits in the liver. The curcumin group also showed lower concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglycerides and glucose.

12-Week Laboratory Study: High Fat Diet vs. High Fat Diet + Curcumin

A Better Curcumin While most curcumin supplements are available as standardized 95 percent extracts, there is a considerably more absorbable form. This unique type of curcumin extract, known as BCM-95, is ground to a fine powder and blended with turmeric oils. Research in the Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences shows that this highly-absorbable form of curcumin has up to 8 to 10 times the absorption and blood retention compared to standardized extracts. The result? Less curcumin is required to achieve noticeable results. That makes BCM-95 an ideal choice for anyone battling high blood sugar levels or extra weight.

High-Fat Diet Certainly, a whole foods, low-sugar diet paired with a sensible High Fat Diet + Curcumin exercise program is important when managing diabesity. Makeover Give Your Hair the V.I.P Treatment Shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products promise great-looking tresses. Some are effective enough—at least temporarily. But the only way to have truly great-looking hair is from the inside out. For lustrous locks, feed your hair with the following nutrients: Powerful amino acids, the most critical being L-methionine and L-cysteine. They are essential for the formation of keratin (the basic building blocks of hair) and promote hair growth. Enhancing B vitamins, including riboflavin, B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid (B5), and biotin. Vitamin B6 and biotin are especially important: • Vitamin B6 plays an important role in the absorption of amino acids. Recent scientific research shows that vitamin B6 and l-cysteine helps prevent alopecia (hair loss) induced by chemotherapy. • Biotin is found in a number of foods, including egg yolks, milk, barley, liver, royal jelly and brewer’s yeast, but for the full benefit, a supplemental source is best. Biotin helps the body synthesize and use fatty acids, and metabolize amino acids needed to build the structure of keratin for strong hair and nails. 24

A Swiss study found that 63 percent of those using a biotin supplement showed a 25 percent increase in nail thickness when they’d previously had dry, brittle fingernails. Correcting a biotin deficiency is especially important if you have alopecia, dermatitis or weak nails.

Reviving millet seed oil extract includes important components— especially milliacin. This unique extract helps regenerate healthy hair and fuels its growth. It also activates the body’s own repair mechanisms to heal skin and reduce inflammation. In an Italian clinical study, cancer patients were divided into two groups receiving either millet seed soil extract and chemotherapy, or chemotherapy alone. The grade, or severity, of hair loss was assessed by World Health Organization (WHO) criteria. Those in the millet seed group saw significantly lower percentages of hair loss. The extract, given orally, was also well tolerated in all patients—a challenge when chemotherapy is part of the treatment. Certainly, more research needs to be done but these preliminary results offer reason for hope to those suffering from hair loss. Protective sunflower seed oil provides valuable omega-6 fatty acids and contains lecithin, phospholipids, tocopherols, carotenoids and vitamin E. It also helps retain moisture in the skin and hair, and may provide a protective barrier as well. Strengthening silica helps maintain the structure of hair and skin. A lack of silica can lead to skin, nail and hair disorders as well as growth problems. The best silica is an organic form obtained from the above-ground parts of the common horsetail (Equisetum arvense) plant, blended with a specific marine oil to enhance absorption. These nutrients are a synergistic formula for strong, lustrous hair growth. Plus, because these nutrients are hormone-free, they will not cause undesirable hair growth on other parts of the body. It is a safe and natural way to encourage healthy hair from the inside out.

Researchers J. Haller, J. Hohmann, and T.F. Freund analyzed different preparations of Echinacea and discovered that the plant contained compounds that had an effect on the brain. The mystery was why that effect hadn’t been noticed earlier. They found that the most effective dosage levels that showed anxiety-reducing effects were much lower than the traditional dosages recommended for immune support. This explains why the relief of stress, anxiety or nervous tension was never discovered when Echinacea was used for the immune system. The type of Echinacea used for the immune system does not contain the compounds that relieve stress and anxiety. This is a whole new discovery for an age-old herb. In a clinical study published in Phytotherapy Research, the researchers found that this specialized Echinacea had a significant effect on relieving anxiety within only three days

This specific extract of Echinacea angustifolia can help you live the life you love. But remember that not just any Echinacea extract will do. Most Echinacea supplements are formulated for immune defense, not anxiety relief, so it’s important to look at labels carefully. Look for the root extract standardized for echinacosides of narrow-leaved coneflower, in small dosage levels of no more than 20 mg. That way you’ll know you’re getting the same clinically-studied extract.
