welcome

It sounds cliché, but really my husband and I don’t want for much. And when we do see something that catches our eye (like the last run of the first-generation iPod or a favourite wrap dress in a new black and white print), we often just buy it. But we still like to surprise one another with a thoughtful gift or two during the holidays. A few years ago, in a flash of brilliant creativity I have yet to repeat, I gave him the “12 dates of Christmas.” I filled his stocking with 12 small items that would represent dates throughout the year: an airplane bottle of tequila for dinner to a local Mexican restaurant; a Gator cleat for a backpacking trip; a portable food container for an evening picnic on our favourite trail; gift certificates for ice cream and a winery tour. He had fun opening the gift (I had fun watching) and we enjoyed our dates throughout the year. It also got us thinking about giving things to do rather than just things to the other people on our lists. If you’re on the same wavelength for gift-giving this year, you’ll want to check out writer Joann MacDonald’s article on gifts of experience. From cooking classes to park passes, you’ll find ideas for even the most challenging people on your list. Plus, travel writer and photographer Bart Card takes us to a fly-in fishing camp in Northern Ontario—if you’re looking for adventure a little farther afield. For those of you hosting friends or family this holiday season, we have ideas for seeing to their every need and, quite possibly, every want—from tips on creating a homey haven in the guest room to unique cocktails created by area bartenders to recipes featuring fresh, dried and sauced cranberries that you can serve morning, noon or night. We also check in with organizers of the Pickering College Holiday Home Tour, which celebrates its 10th year this month, and get their best advice for decorating your own home for the season. Our home tour visits a Victorian house on one of Stouffville’s oldest streets, whose owners celebrate their family heritage and that of their community. And local designers share projects for transforming awkward spaces with custom cabinetry. We hope you enjoy this issue.

Everything in its place While an empty closet is a rarity in most homes, providing some storage solutions for your guests will make it easier for them (and your home) to stay organized and free of clutter. Clear a drawer in a dresser or a shelf or rack in the closet and leave the door open to signal to your guests they are welcome to use it. If space is an issue, a few strategically placed hooks and hangers and a chair or chest can provide a spot to hang clothes and lay out a suitcase.

A DECADE OF HOLIDAY HOME TOuRS

by

W

hat better way to get inspired to deck your halls for the holidays than to see how others have done it? Every November for the past 10 years, Newmarket, Aurora and Stouffville residents have had that chance during Pickering College’s Holiday Home Tour. The two-day weekend event showcases a handful of area homes all swagged out for the season. And this year there’s even more eye candy than usual. “We normally have about six homes on the tour,” says Sandra Liem, the manager of special events at Pickering College, an independent school for children from junior kindergarten to Grade 12 in Newmarket. “This year being our 10th, we’ve added another home on the tour.” Nearly a thousand people typically take part in the annual self-directed tour, which includes a variety of house styles, from grand chateaus to subdivision and historic homes. “We like to show what our community is all about,” Liem says, adding that while not everyone can afford a grandiose home, people enjoy looking at them. But it’s more than just architecture and

leSlee maSon

size that separates each house in the tour spotlight. “Every home has a designer and florist and they decorate the homes to a specific theme,” Liem says. Depending on the home, that may mean volunteers in period garb and entertainment and food in keeping with the theme. It’s a “more is more” approach designed to give visitors plenty of ideas they can use in their own spaces. “Every home is decked out for the holidays,” Liem says. “It’s over-the-top decorating because that’s what people like to see.” It’s not surprising that it’s a huge undertaking—one that involves participation from more than 200 local businesses and nearly a year of planning by the college’s volunteer committee. Pickering College students also play a big role, Liem says. The popular event, which also includes a one-day free admission seasonal boutique at the school, has become a big fundraiser over the years. “In the past year, we’ve been donating [proceeds] to the global leader program,” says Liem, who explains the program is designed to teach Pickering College

students to think about their world and how they can impact the future positively. But it’s not just the students who benefit from the annual event: A portion of the proceeds also goes to a local initiative (this year it’s the pediatric oncology clinic at Southlake Regional Health Centre). “We’ve donated almost a million dollars to various charities in the community,” Liem says. Contributing to and being part of the community has played a key role in the tour right from the start. “The first purpose of it was to kick off the holiday season for the community and having Pickering College be part of that,” she says. “It’s such a dynamic event—all the moving components, the different companies—and it’s so community based.”

Deck your halls like a pro Lee Brown, a decorator-designer and owner of LRB Interiors in Newmarket, has been giving her time and talent to the Pickering College Holiday Home Tour for the past seven years. Here, she shares some tips for creating a spectacular holiday display.

1. Work with your existing look. For example, if your space is more modern in style, choose complementary holiday décor and colours. “Pick up from your toss cushions or drapery and try to build around that,” she suggests.

2. Create continuity. When decorating

in general, keep visual flow in mind. “There has to be some sort of continuity running throughout the space,” says Brown, adding that while rooms don’t have to be “married”, they should be related. “You can create that through colour or through style or theme.”

3. Go big. Rather than decorating with a bunch of small knick-knacks, Brown suggests choosing a few larger pieces with visual impact. “It’s more about making a statement than having a whole bunch of figurines clustered.”

4. Think outside the Christmas box. “There are some great finds at the antique markets around,” Brown says. For example, old quilts, benches and high chairs can all be reinvented as holiday decor. “In the past in traditional homes, I’ve used some old wooden spools and wrapped them in wire and put them in arrangement.”

5. Mix higher-priced items with budget Take your cue from designers and go big with a few large-scale decorations or reinvent items you have on hand or can find at a local antique market as holiday decor. 28

here is a story and a sentiment behind every piece of furniture and dÊcor item in Norma and Graydon Card’s house. Their 120-year-old Victorian-style home stands on the second oldest residential street in Stouffville and the inside is as rich in history as the outside. An old-fashioned doorbell is the only way visitors will be heard, especially if the Cards are enjoying their lush green backyard flanked by Manitoba maple and flowering almond trees. But the dainty doorbell is just a precursor to the old-world charm inside the two-storey home. 30

“Our home is full of memorabilia. Most are family pieces, but some have been acquired by us over the years,” Norma says. It was the death of her grandmother that led the 73-year-old former elementary school teacher to acquire not just antique pieces, but also a taste for preserving the past. “My grandmother died rather suddenly in 1962 and we had to empty her home in

In the Cards’ enclosed front porch, a newer addition, guests can signal their arrival using the original doorbell and check their reflection in a mirror the owner’s grandfather won in 1928.

a hurry,” she recalls. “My parents didn’t have much of an interest in antiques at the time, so they gave everything away to anybody who would take it. This was before antiques went on to become so desirable. We would see big price tags on antiques and recall similar stuff my grandmother had possessed. We regretted acting in haste, so I decided that when it was my turn, I would preserve the family heritage.” Preserve and adapt might be the two key words in the Cards’ lives, for the couple has a home full of turn-of-the-century furniture, but they have also embraced modern-day amenities. They made one key change to the exterior of the house soon after buying it 40 years ago. The original front door led straight into the living room; the Cards added an enclosed front porch to allow to some breathing room. Inside changes have been largely cosmetic. “Every room had wallpaper of a different colour when we moved in so I wanted to change that to have some coordination of colour,” Norma says, as she walks past the grass cloth wallpaper in the dining room. “It was blue in colour, but we had it painted over in beige.” The 14-inch baseboards and stained glass are reminders of a vintage style that the Cards have so beautifully retained.

Family and community history blend seamlessly in the Card home: A chair inherited from one late relative sits below a still-life painted by another. The crank telephone belonged to onetime Stouffville mayor Ken Laushway. A painting of the home, discovered by friends at an art auction. The work of a former Stouffville District High art teacher.

At the entrance is a mirror that reflects the family’s legacy. It belonged to Graydon’s grandfather, Herman Card, who was a home builder in west Toronto. “He won the mirror as a prize from the building association in 1928 because he brought the largest family to their summer picnic. His wife and he had six children, one of whom was Graydon’s father,” Norma says. It is a home that speaks to you through the myriad photographs and memorabilia that adorn its walls. They speak of travels through Italy and France, Zermatt and Whistler. (Graydon is currently researching Petra, Jordan for an upcoming trip.) They are a reminder of the love for a small town where the Cards settled and raised a son and a daughter. Several plates commemorating Stouffville’s centennial 34

year line the wall of the Card kitchen. “I was a teacher at Summitview Public School for many years and raised my children when Stouffville was a town of roughly 5,000 people. It has been a very nice place to live in so I couldn’t not collect the plates,” Norma says An antique wagon, weigh scales, spinning wheel and grandmother clock are just a few of the pieces that give the Card home its yesteryear charm. The most interesting, perhaps, is a hand crank phone mounted on the kitchen wall. Graydon has a special memory attached to it. “It belonged to Ken Laushway, a former mayor of Stouffville. He had a few of these and when hand crank phones became obsolete, I bought one directly from him,” says the 74-year-old businessman. A true ode to the Card family home lies

in a painting of their house, done by Jane Warren a former art teacher at Stouffville District High, that hangs on one of the walls. “We didn’t know her, but she must have liked something about our house to have painted a picture of the outside without our knowledge,” Norma says. “When she was asked to submit something for an art auction, she contributed this particular painting. Our friends who happened to be at the auction saw it and thought we would like to have it. Of course, we paid them for it.” The Cards turned their attic into a master bedroom. It’s a haven they retire to in the evenings. It, too, houses treasures, including a desk with candle stands, handmade wooden chairs, hand-knit dolls and book shelves that hold some of what their hearts have stored over the years.

n o i t c n u f r o f t i F Custom cabinetry for awkward spaces by

SUe Kanhai

Most homes have one—an awkward space that just isn’t living up to its potential, that can’t be solved with off-the-rack furniture. Interior decorator Jeanne Grier calls them ugly ducklings. “When you do custom cabinetry, you’re usually taking an ugly duckling little space and putting something really beautiful in,” she says. Grier has worked as a decorator for 21 years. Twelve years ago, she and her husband, Colin Grier, brought electric fireplaces into their business. Their showroom, Stylish Fireplaces & Interiors by Huntington Lodge, is in Thornhill. Design led to fireplaces, which in turn led to custom cabinetry. “It’s been a winding path,” Grier laughs, “but a natural evolution.” When it comes to those awkward spaces, it’s rare, she says, to find that perfect-sized functional piece in a store. You could search and search and never find an off-the shelf36

solution that will fit. That’s the difference with custom cabinetry; not only it is fitted to the space, you can dictate its function. “There’s that functional side that, as a neat freak, I just love. I love that people have somewhere to put their stuff and that it has been personalized,” she says. One of her favourite projects to date involved a set of basement stairs. “The area under the stairs becomes a catch-all for the junk we accumulate,” she says. “It is really a lost zone.” Her clients already had a beautifully finished basement that included a big sitting area, TV and fireplace cabinet. They wanted to have a bar installed. “It was definitely a challenge,” she says. “You’ve got this tiny little trapezoid-shaped space. The stairs come down on an angle, you don’t have a straight ceiling line or even a regular height ceiling.” She also had a door to contend with; it hid electrical panels that

BeFore needed to be accessed. Thanks to clever design, the result is a sleek entertaining space that features backlit stone and an ample wine rack. Her clients were thrilled. Grier recently transformed another commonly overlooked space: a secondstorey landing with odd angles, an arched window and peaked ceiling. “It’s not a small space but it’s so often wasted in most houses,” she says. Her clients envisioned a window seat and bookcases and wanted storage for their outdoor lounge cushions. “You could never just go out and buy something that would fit into that space and look really good,” Grier says. She fit bookcases in under the angled ceiling. She added drawers for storage. She had custom moulding made to frame the lovely but unfinished arched window. She was thoughtful about the details. The

bench cushion is upholstered in a durable outdoor fabric so it won’t fade in the sun. She installed a roman shade, also made of versatile outdoor fabric, for hot and sunny days. She added wall-mounted light fixtures. A glass-covered windowsill ledge provides a spot to rest a coffee mug or wine glass, without fear of staining the wood. The window faces south so it’s often sunny. Good lighting ensures they can read in the evenings. “Now it’s a lovely place to sit. They can really enjoy it instead of just coming up the stairs and having this big wasted space,” Grier says. Many clients are looking for built-ins for their living rooms. They need to satisfy several requirements, incorporating a TV, fireplace and storage to hide electronic components. “Sometimes the layout of a house is such that one room is really the everything room. In townhouses, condos, even smaller homes, the living room is the family room is the great room,” she says. “Wall units are something we do over and over again in different variations.” Hayley Cotterill and Jesse Lumsden are the husband and wife team behind Lumsden Custom Cabinetry & Bespoke Joinery in Markham. They are often confronted with slanted ceilings, strange angles and oddly laid out spaces.

Two under-used spaces become functional and attractive bars: Jeanne Grier of Stylish Fireplaces & Interiors by Huntington Lodge transformed space under bar (left) and Lumsden Custom Cabinetry & Bespoke Joinery reworked a pantry.

“We come across awkward spaces quite a lot,” Cotterill says. “You just have to really get creative with the design.” Cotterill and Lumsden create most of their designs themselves, though they do also work in partnership with several designers. “People will come in with pictures of something they like, ideas they found on houzz.com. We’ll work with that and create something that’s specific for them, custom,” she says. The pair has transformed several laundry rooms, including one that presented several challenges. To access it, you first went down a couple of steps. Then there was a long, narrow room that led to a door, which opens into the garage. “A lot of time is spent in laundry rooms,” 38

holiday 2014

laughs Cotterill. “Not a lot of people think to put money into it and make it custom, but it really is a space we spend a lot of time in. If it’s done properly and organized, it makes doing laundry a lot more enjoyable.” Cotterill and Lumsden recently helped a family of six that lives in a modestsized home. They converted a very small living room into a workspace that can accommodate everybody comfortably. The room contains built-in wall units that hide things neatly away, ample desk space for the children to do their homework, an adult desk space and a craft pantry for their creative mom. “It looks really good and it helped them so much. The room is now efficient for a family of six,” Cotterill says.

Another couple wanted to convert their walk-in pantry to a bar. The chic space is now fitted with a bar fridge, sink and cabinets and covered in reclaimed brick veneer. “It has a very old world feel but is in a new build home,” Cotterill says. “This worked out so much better for them. They’re a couple without children who didn’t need the big walk-in pantry storage. It’s something a little different that most wouldn’t think about doing. It adds character to the home.” Says Grier, “Decorators like the transformation in general. If the space was beautiful to start with, clients wouldn’t call us. Usually we put up with something for years before we finally get around to dealing with it. Then we think, ‘Why did I wait?’”

We’ve done all the legwork for you and asked top bartenders from popular restaurants across York Region for their favourite holiday-inspired cocktail recipes. What are you waiting for? Inspiring Italian in the kitchen

Lago at Eagles Nest

by

Jonathan Hiltz

You don’t need to be a golf enthusiast to have a reason to visit Eagles Nest Golf Club on Dufferin Street just north of Major Mackenzie. You just need to love great food and have a craving for some of the most inspiring Italian cuisine around. Situated right next to the 18th hole on the well-manicured golf course is Lago, which means “lake” in Italian. Inside the vast kitchen is executive chef Giacomo Romano, who upon first glance looks young enough to be the new kid. But make no mistake, you only need to speak with Romano for a few minutes to realize that not only is he fit to lead a culinary team, he invents recipes that will make even the most discerning foodies want seconds.

photography by

Naomi Hiltz

Romano comes from a long line of culinary experts, but quickly points out his first mentor was his Nonna, who cooked for hours every day to make delicious traditional food for her family. He worked in his father’s pizzeria for some time and that fuelled his ambition to step away from an early career in mechanical engineering and become a chef. Before coming to Lago, Romano worked at some of the top eateries in the GTA, including Rosewater Supper Club, Oliver & Bonacini and Canoe. After arriving at Eagles Nest, he quickly moved up the ranks to become executive chef. He now oversees the kitchen at Turnberry Golf Club in Brampton as well. At Lago, his signature dishes include pan-

seared gnocchi with spinach, almonds and fine olive oil; grilled sea bass dressed with grilled lemon; and zucchini pizzelle with goat cheese and mint. Top off your meal with a glass of grappa, grape-based brandy created in Italy, from Lago’s extensive collection.

Zucchini Pizzelle Chef Romano Giacomo shares his recipe, inspired by his Nonna’s dish, for zucchini pizzelle. Ingredients

2 green zucchini 1 yellow zucchini 125 mL (1/2 cup) all-purpose flour 1 egg 60 mL (1/4 cup) finely chopped parsley 125 mL (1/2 cup) grated Parmigiano 125 mL (1/2 cup) crumbled goat cheese 60 mL (1/4 cup) sliced baby zucchini 1 sprig mint, picked leaves juice of 1/2 lemon 75 mL (5 tbsp) olive oil Method

Trim the ends off zucchinis. Grate into a colander with a course grater and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Transfer zucchini to a medium mixing bowl and add flour, egg, parsley, Parmigiano, salt and pepper to taste. Mix ingredients together to create a batter. Heat a shallow pan to medium heat with enough olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Make 4 30 mL (2 tbsp) circles in the pan with the zucchini batter. Cook on each side for 2 minutes or until golden, cooked through and firm. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. In a small bowl, combine sliced baby zucchini, lemon juice and olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Arrange pizzelle on a plate or platter and loosely dress with the baby zucchini, crumbled goat cheese and mint leaves. Finish with a light drizzle of olive oil. 54

We all know somebody who was born to be an artist. But maybe work and life commitments have gotten in the way? Encourage your artsy friend or family member with a gift certificate for lessons. The Newmarket School of Fine Art provides art instruction and inspiration to artists ages six and up. Choose from classes in painting, drawing and sculpture. Most adult classes are $110 for six weeks, but you may wish to buy a higher-value gift certificate for the newbie painter who needs supplies. Oil, acrylic or watercolour kits run around $130. Any skill level and every age is welcome. “We have a lot of people who painted many years ago and raised a family and now it’s time to paint,” says owner Fred Thomson.

cooking classes For the seasoned foodie and the cooking newbie alike, a cooking class is a savoury gift. At Woodbridge’s Culinary Studio 2000, chef Gianni Ceschia offers cooking classes in hearty Italian cuisine. Born, raised and formally trained in Italy, Ceschia worked for many years at hotels and restaurants in Europe and Toronto. Gift-givers can buy a gift certificate, allowing the recipient to pick and choose classes or pay for specific classes. Classes are three hours long and cost $45 to $55 per person. The chef demos a minimum of four recipes per class, covering everything from raw ingredients through to presentation. The best part? “They taste everything with a glass of wine that’s paired with the food,” says Ceschia. Classes cover themes such as risotto and gnocchi and fisherman’s delight. Ceschia hopes that participants come away feeling that cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. “When you prepare a meal, you have a relation with the ingredients, a relation with the kitchen, the family,” he says. “Having the family enjoy it will give you satisfaction.” For more information, visit culinary2000.com.

Michelle Gallant of Looks Image Consulting

A wardrobe make-over Is somebody on your gift list graduating from university, changing careers or simply in need of a wardrobe overhaul? A consultation with a style expert is an unexpected and thoughtful gift. Michelle Gallant of Looks Image Consulting offers wardrobe management services to help people find fashionable clothing suited to their colour palette and body type. Gallant says the four-season colour analysis made famous in the ‘80s is still important today. Clients may also choose a closet make-over session. “I physically go through the closet to look at

your clothing personality, assess the amount you like to spend on clothing and identify the holes in your wardrobe,” she says. Gallant builds a detailed shopping list outlining pieces needed, including colour, quantity and stores where they can be purchased. For those who want in-store assistance, she also offers a personal shopping experience. Colour assessments (including a personalized palette book) cost $250. Other services are $150 for the first hour and $100 for each hour after. Personal shopping takes about three hours on average. Find Gallant at looksimage.com.

Old-school IOU David Webster photograph

If budget is an issue or you’re trying to minimize the materialism, offer an old-school IOU. Draw up an IOU promising a future experience together—maybe a night at the movies, a trail walk or time volunteering at a food bank or shelter. Or pledge to provide a service so that your gift recipient has more time for leisure activities. Walk a loved one’s dog, babysit a friend’s child or prepare a home-cooked meal or breakfast in bed for someone who could use a little extra relaxation time. After all, there’s no more valuable gift than the one that says “I care.”

dining and seasonal events. The completion of a three-year revitalization project may be just the reason you need to join them. Now boasting cobblestone streets that weave around the neighbourhood, strategically placed trees and bushes, wide pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, a large condo development and a brand-new clock tower, Main Street Markham reminds one of Hill Valley in Back to the Future when Marty McFly travels to the 1950s.

Christine Matthews, the marketing manager and community liaison for the Markham Village BIA, has been involved with promoting the new and improved area. As she walks along the street, she carefully surveys the neighbourhood, taking papers off the newly painted lampposts and informing a store owner of an awning that looks loose. The revitalization, she says, was an extensive, multi-stage project that included sewer upgrades, streetscaping, roadwork,

EVENTS Main Street Markham hosts a number of events throughout the year. Coming soon is its popular Festival of Lights, Friday, Nov. 28, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Come and see the improvements to the Main Street while you enjoy a free horse and buggy ride, live music, carollers, jugglers, stilt-walkers and fire artists. Stores will be open late for holiday shopping.

sidewalks and light posts. It cost in excess of $5 million—an investment in making the area more attractive to businesses, residents and visitors. Along with the revitalization came the Sierra Homes condominium development. In keeping with the heritage guidelines of the neighbourhood, the building boasts an attractive façade in historically appropriate colours and materials with the bottom floor reserved for retailers. The front is three storeys, while the back goes up to six storeys—so the building complements others on the street, while bringing residential space to the downtown. “It has been a huge plus to the businesses and the BIA because there are 144 condos in there, which equals potentially 300 new customers,” Matthews says. Harry James is the CEO of the Harry James Group on Main Street Markham, which comprises a number of businesses including Kawartha Rock Quarry, Cloud 9, Marca on Main Italian Restaurant, Foundry Lane Real Estate Holdings and the Y Factor Business Workshops. He is thrilled with the results of the revitalization. “It’s spectacular and a long time coming,

but it was totally worth the wait. It has completely revitalized the street,” James says. “Our businesses are about building value and great customer experience and this gorgeous new backdrop helps bring everything to a whole new level.” Paul Cicchini, owner of the popular bar and restaurant the Duchess of Markham, is

also seeing the benefits. “It was three years of meetings and armtwisting, but it’s very nice,” he says. “We are seeing new faces on the street and people are commenting [on the revitalized area].” Cicchini is especially pleased with about the added two-metre sidewalk space, which has allowed him to add a front patio.

CHRISTINE ALEXIOU by

These aren’t your grandmother’s quilts. Christine Alexiou is turning the very notion of quilting on its head. The Markham resident creates intricate nuanced pieces of textile art that draw from a number of different art forms. In fact, a single work easily reveals more than a dozen techniques, each of which is a craft in its own right. The artist traces her passion for sewing back to Grade 7 and her first home economics class. She was a natural at it and was soon making her own clothes. 68

Sue Kanhai

Later she studied at the Ontario College of Art. She worked in educational publishing as an illustrator, graphic designer and art director. Now a full-time artist, she says needle arts and textiles bring all of her deepest loves together. “Fabric has always been my first love, because of the texture and tactile nature,” she says. “Every quilter and fibre artist will tell you: we’re fabric-a-holics.” The artist’s current focus is hand-painted

whole cloth and appliquéed art quilts. While all of her work can be categorized as fibre art, only half is technically quilts. Quilts have three distinct layers: a front piece, back piece and a layer of batting in between, all stitched and bound together. With fibre art, there’s less worry about what the back of a piece will look like. They’re often framed and displayed on a wall. Alexiou does everything herself from start to finish, including the remarkable, detailed embellishments that are all done by hand.

ABOVE: Fibre artist Christine Alexiou LEFT: Flower Form (hand-stitched wet wool felt, needle felting, beading) TOP RIGHT: Firebird (felted wool applique, free-motion machine quilting) BOTTOM RIGHT: Red Branches (textile paint, hand-stitched cotton cord)

“To me the needle is like using a pencil, it’s like drawing,” she says. She admires the work of North Carolina textile artist Hollis Chatelain, as well as California quilter Sheila Frampton Cooper. While their approaches may differ from hers in style and tone, they definitely share a love of colour. Alexiou excels at creating exquisite pieces from humble materials. “Very often I like to use recycled stuff that would normally end up in the garbage,” she says, citing drain covers, washers, cheesecloth, plastic wrap, brown craft paper, silk rag remnants from saris and even the mesh bags you buy onions in at the grocery store as examples. “All of these are everyday materials you’d have no idea you could transform unless you tried.” She likes the effect rusting objects have on fabric. Often she’ll use pieces of rusted metal, wrapping them in white fabric and placing them in a solution of water and vinegar for a few hours. The patterns left behind form the beginnings of a great abstract piece. While she may occasionally worry people think she’s crazy for stopping to pick up bits of rusty metal off the street, she is otherwise quite comfortable pushing her chosen art form forward. “I’m not interested in typical bed quilts,” she says. “I want to show things that are more art-related. I have to be true to what I feel and want to express.” holiday 2014

Last year Alexiou entered the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. The annual show draws more than 50,000 visitors and features quilts from all over the globe, including Australia, Europe, Africa, China, Japan and South America. She submitted an ambitious project that took her almost three years to complete—the Seven Deadly Sins, illustrated and in quilt form. She wasn’t even sure it would qualify for entry. Not only was it juried in, it went on to win one of the show’s major prizes. Alexiou currently teaches fibre art at the Markham Guild of Village Crafts. “We start out with a piece of fabric and then we play with it,” she says. Fibre art pieces evolve and grow as you work on them, she explains. “It’s a challenge. There’s mystery. You don’t know what it will be until it’s done.”

Growing arts and culture by

Nancy Bodi

W

hen you think of York Region, do you think of it as being a culturally vibrant and alluring place? Do you even think of York Region, which is comprised of nine distinct municipalities, as having a recognizable cultural identity? Interestingly, many people who live in York Region are not aware of what the region has to offer culturally. Do you even care? Whether you are conscious of it or not, arts and culture play a fundamental role in your life. Think of the music you listen to, the films you watch, the books you read or the visual art and images that surround you in a day. Your life likely has been touched by restaurants, festivities, artists, cultural venues and spaces in your community. For many of us, arts and culture enrich our lives with meaning and joy, give us a sense of belonging and connect us to our community. Arts and culture are key factors in the quality of life of where we live. They are a major attractor of people and investment and the sustainability of our communities. A vibrant arts and culture sector: • builds community pride and social cohesion; • embraces and celebrates cultural diversity; • attracts local economic development by offering a higher quality of life; • provides tangible economic benefits through job creation and spending on arts and entertainment; 74

• gives a place personality, making it distinctive and welcoming; and • provides a competitive advantage that builds a community’s brand over time. These benefits of a lively cultural sector are well understood by big cities. What is lesser understood is that these benefits are easily transferrable to smaller communities and even to new suburbs that can be mistakenly thought of as cultural wastelands. Regions, towns and smaller municipalities can have as vital an arts and cultural sector as big cities. It’s simply a myth that big cities alone enjoy and reap the benefits the sector provides. Ontario’s Prince Edward County is a case in point. This rural community neighbouring Kingston, Ont. experienced an economic renaissance after years of stagnation, simply by repositioning itself in the 1990s as a unique cultural place. Municipal planners implemented a cultural vision that leveraged the county’s array of arts and culture assets and focused on quality of place. As a result, Prince Edward County’s economy boomed, attracting millions in investment and tourism revenues. Jobs followed. Arts and culture transform places. Hamilton, which has been associated

with the steel industry, is in the midst of a grassroots cultural awakening. Hamilton has become a mecca for the creative community, attracting artists and new businesses. Fuelling this is the city’s monthly Art Crawl along James St. North, which draws thousands. Communities, no matter the size and location, that place a high value on arts and culture receive large dividends. They become more desirable to live in, their brands grow stronger and they thrive economically. Arts and culture shape quality of place, as well as the lives and attitudes of people, like us, who are affected by the place in which we live. So what can a place like York Region do to develop the creative, economic and social potential of its arts and cultural sector? Many of York Region’s cultural assets are localized and not well known across the region. Also, York Region competes with the strong pull of Toronto, a mega cultural centre, to its south. Arts and culture is seeded at the grassroots. People who live in York Region need to see it as culturally vibrant. This not only requires increasing their knowledge of what there is to see and do in their own backyard but also getting them to actively participate in the discovery, promotion or creation of regional cultural experiences. The truth is York Region is a culturally happening place. It boasts unique festivals, museums, galleries, art shows, restaurants, live music and community events. York Region is rich in creative capital. It is home to emerging and renowned visual artists and artisans, authors, singersongwriters, dancers, actors, producers, designers, graphic artists and more. York Region has a rich, culturally diverse and growing population. It is characterized by over 200 distinct ethnic groups with more than 60 languages spoken. Stats Canada data shows that Markham is the most diverse city in Canada. The York Region Arts Council’s mandate is to grow the arts and culture sector in York Region. How important is arts and culture to you? What should we do as citizens, artists, cultural providers, advocates and planners to grow our culture and regional identity? Please tell us your views; email us at info@ yorkregionartscouncil.com. We are looking forward to hearing from you. For information about arts and culture in York Region, visit yorkscene.com, brought to you by York Region’s partners in tourism—the York Region Arts Council, the Regional Municipality of York, Metroland Media Group and Central Counties Tourism. RETIREMENT: ENJOY MORE BY SPENDING LESS

C

anadians are no strangers to the fact that many people near retirement are facing large financial burdens. With the recent economic challenges, people fear that they will never be debt free and as a result, most will have a lot of catching up to do if they wish to meet their retirement goals. Yet there is a home ownership option that is making its way to the forefront of real estate choices, one that has the ability to help ease this burden. Land leasing, a different kind of home ownership for retirement offering increased flexibility and lower capital outlay. On average, Canadians plan to retire at the age of 59 but are now forced to postpone till 63, according to a survey by the BMO Wealth Institute. A vast number of those surveyed do not feel assured that they will be financially stable during retirement as most people will be carrying debt into their retirement. As mortgages comprise the biggest component of household debt in Canada, homeowners are faced with the harsh reality of sacrificing the things they dreamt of doing because they feel a sense of enslavement to their debt instead. The home ownership option of land leasing is emerging as a way to escape large mortgage payments during retirement since it provides a simple solution for people who are looking to unlock the money tied up in their current house. Essentially, with land leasing, people own their home and lease the land that it’s on. From a financial standpoint it means people don’t have to come up with a huge down payment or saddle themselves with a massive mortgage. From a lifestyle standpoint it could mean unlocking some of the capital in one’s current home to travel, buy a second “winter” home or reinvest for later years. “The idea of retirement should come with thoughts of comfort and ease, 78

not worry and burden,” said Rob Tallis, Vice President Sales, Marketing & Construction with Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities. “Living in a Parkbridge retirement community means surrounding yourself with like-minded people who are at a similar life stage, creating a social family of sorts. Further these truly are communities with an array of amenities and activities that make retirement not just the end of work life, but rather the beginning of that next big stage in life”. Land leasing isn’t just an affordable option, it is a lifestyle option, enabling people to enjoy the things that matter most in life. Parkbridge communities are a great example of what a land leasing company can do for you.

Roman Sadovsky

Vaughan skater a rising star

Having laced up his first pair of skates at the age of five, Roman Sadovsky has come a long way in the 10 years since. Today, the 15-yearold Vaughan figure skater is one of Canada’s brightest prospects in his sport. “Both my parents got me into skating and I think at the time they just wanted to keep me busy,” recalls the Bill Crothers Secondary School student with a laugh. Like a lot of young Canadians, Sadovsky first put on his skates with the intention of playing hockey. “Initially I wanted to play hockey, which is pretty much every Canadian boy’s dream,” he says. “But then some of the instructors suggested that I should try out figure skating.” He followed up on their suggestion—and has not looked back. While young Roman also took part in gymnastics and swimming, at the age of nine, he made the decision to focus his efforts. “I realized that I needed to focus on one sport to really be good at it; so I decided to pick figure skating because I found it more interesting and something I really enjoyed,” he explains.

by

daVid li

According to Sadovsky’s longtime coach, Tracey Wainman, it’s the talented skater’s dedication and willingness to take constructive feedback that have allowed him to excel in the sport. “It’s been about eight years, but I remember that he definitely showed a lot of talent and he was extremely good at making corrections,” she recalls her first impressions of Sadovsky. “He was also really good at taking his lessons and working on his own. So his progression was really fast,” adds Wainman, a two-time Canadian women’s champion. In the eight years he has worked with Wainman at the York Region Skating Academy in Richmond Hill, Sadovsky has skated his way to some impressive results. In the 2011-2012 season, the then-12-yearold posted a second place finish in the novice division of the national championships. Another notable accomplishment came at last season’s Canadian nationals in Ottawa, where he skated to an eighth place finish as a 14-year-old in the senior men’s division. “Just to put that accomplishment into perspective, most 14-year-olds still compete in the novice division or are just starting out

at the junior division,” said Wainman about Sadovsky’s eye-opening experience at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships this past January. “A lot of those skaters in the competition Roman watched and looked up to, and then all of a sudden he was on the same ice surface as them. It just made the whole experience an amazing one for him,” she says. “To go out there and do two great performances was just icing on the cake.” Sadovsky agrees his performance at the national competition has been the highlight of his young skating career. “It was just a great experience skating in front of so many people; and it was just priceless bowing to thousands of people who were standing and cheering for you,” says Sadovsky, who received standing ovations after both his short and long programs. With the 2014-2015 season just getting underway, the skater recently enjoyed a taste of international success on the junior circuit, when he recorded a first place finish at a Junior Grand Prix event in the Czech Republic in September. “Standing on top of the podium with the Canadian anthem playing, that’s when I realize that I’m bringing a gold medal home back to my country. And I just have that sense of pride,” says Sadovsky of his recent triumph. While Wainman believes Sadovsky is capable of earning podium finishes at the senior level of international competitions, she stresses there’s more work to be done first. “We’re still in skill development. Over the next year or two, we’ll be working on triple axels and quads,” she says of her star pupil, who trains six days a week. “We’re also working on improving his skating and his spins and choreography. But he’s definitely progressing in the right direction.” Looking ahead, the talented young figure skater says he has visions of representing Canada at future international competitions as well as the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. “I just need to keep training as hard as I can, but also I just need to trust my coach, trust myself and trust in my abilities,” he says. holiday 2014

AMI

s Lodge

e r u t n e v d a n A e m o h o close t Story and photography by

While travelling in the Arctic, I was given the opportunity to travel to one of my favourite spots close to home, Kesagami Wilderness Lodge. Accompanying me on this fishing adventure was my friend and part-time fishing mentor, Duncan. Duncan knows all there is to know about fishing. He can tell you the perfect bait for every fish in every lake in Ontario. He eats, breathes and dreams about fishing. Duncan also just happens to be 12 years old. After a long trip from the Arctic to Greenland and back home, I quickly switched gears and set out on the 10-hour drive to Cochrane. The long drive passed quickly while I was schooled on fishing in Northern Ontario by Duncan. Being from Bermuda, I was brought up with deep sea fishing. When I first discovered Kesagami Wilderness Lodge, the idea of fishing on a lake in Northern Ontario didn’t register as something I would be interested in. Fighting with 500 pounds of marlin, salt water, sun and tropics formed my vision of what fishing was, what fishing should be. What on earth would I want with a lake in Northern Ontario? How wrong I was. The only establishment located on Kesagami Lake, amid a sprawling and unspoiled wilderness, Kesagami Wilderness Lodge is Ontario’s premier trophy northern pike lake. Accessible only by float plane in the summer months, Kesagami Lake is shallow (average two metres or seven feet) and tannin rich, creating ideal conditions for a world-class pike fishery. The lodge’s strictly regulated catch and release program has ensured the quantity, size and sustainability of the fishery. Our trip to Kesagami began in the quaint town of Cochrane. We arrived at the Cochrane Air Services airbase to board the plane. The flight from Cochrane is about

BarT card

45 minutes and is almost as memorable as the lodge itself. If you get a chance to fly in Northern Ontario, you should take it. I was amazed at the absolute wealth of land and lakes. Flying low enough to view the vast wilderness below, Ontario bush pilots are hailed as some of the most experienced and safest in the world, in part due to the abundance of lakes available to land on in a moment’s notice. After a breathtaking flight, we landed on Kesagami Lake. For a brief moment, Duncan and I stopped discussing fishing in order to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, the pristine environment and the remote location of the lodge. Kesagami Wilderness Lodge was built in the 1980s and is managed by Charlie McDonald, a professional photographer and avid angler. Kesagami functions on a nineweek summer season and is staffed mainly by university students looking to earn some well-deserved money and, of course, have a little bit of summer adventure. The fly-in “American plan” lodge is both welcoming and luxurious, a stark contrast to the wilderness that surrounds it. The remote nature of the lodge, coupled with the nineweek full-on schedule for the staff, lends to a family atmosphere. Always professional and courteous, staff members address each guest by name and assure your every need is met. McDonald met us at the dock and, after a quick tour, we were shown to our room to freshen up before dinner. Kesagami offers two different options for accommodation. Guests can opt to stay in the hotel section, in rooms with private bathroom or in rustic cabins with woodstoves and shared facilities Once refreshed and rested, we made our way along a wooden walkway to the spacious lodge.

Equipped with a recreation area including a pool table and shuffleboard, a bar, a massive fireplace, stained glass window and a television with hundreds of videos, for those rainy days, the lodge offers an exceptional level of comfort and services. Fortunately for me, all Duncan wanted to do was fish or discuss fishing. For children who are not as interested in fishing, Kesagami Lodge offers an array of unplugged family fun. Formerly owned by the world-famous restaurant Michelbob’s Ribs, the lodge’s dining room serves meals that are fullcourse, varied, hearty and delicious. Guests can still enjoy Michelbob’s world-famous ribs as well as thick, tender New York strips, old-fashioned roast turkey with all the trimmings, juicy prime rib, mouth-watering desserts and, of course, hearty breakfasts. No meal is complete without a visit with the chef, Frank. Offering a much-appreciated splash of eccentricity, Frank is a unique character who loves his job almost as much as socializing with the guests. After dinner, we retired for the night; sleep

is important before a big day of fishing. The following morning, after breakfast, we prepared for fishing and boarded the boat. Expecting a small canoe, I was pleasantly surprised when we got into a huge, stable, square-back Scott canoe, with plenty of room for anglers, gear, camera equipment and lunch. Guides are available for a reasonable price and, in addition to Duncan, I was lucky enough to be paired with a fantastic one. From the onset I could tell our guide knew and truly loved his job— a good thing seeing as I couldn’t remember the last time I had been in a boat on a lake. A plus to having a guide is that everything is taken care of—from fishing gear to lunch. Our guide uncovered the secrets of Kesagami Lake. He brought us to assured fish-catching locations, cleaned walleye, which are OK to keep as long as they are eaten that day, and prepared an amazing shore lunch that I will not soon forget. A special part of the Kesagami dining experience is, of course, a shore lunch built around fresh-caught walleyes. Served piping hot with potatoes, beans, coffee or other beverage on the shores of beautiful Kesagami Lake, shore lunch is an integral part of any Canadian fishing experience. If you don’t hire a guide, you can have a lunch kit packed ahead of time and enjoy a do-ityourself shore lunch.

In total, we caught a few hundred walleye and more than a hundred pike, a number of them measuring more than a metre (40 inches). If you’re heading to Kesagami for the fishing, you will not be disappointed, although the lodge offers alternatives as well. Catering to everyone from avid fishermen to couples just looking to relax for a few days, Kesagami offers a range of activities including canoeing, nature walks, bird watching, abundant wildlife photography opportunities and swimming (if the weather permits). The natural beauty of the area, the unspoiled, pristine environment, fresh air, unpolluted waters, abundant wildlife, serenity, solitude and quality time with family and friends make staying at Kesagami a memorable experience. For nature photography or wildlife viewing, it is hard to imagine a site more bounteous than the Kesagami area. McDonald, our guide and all the staff at Kesagami made our trip truly memorable and I would recommend a guide to any novice angler looking for an experience beyond just catching a trophy fish. Kesagami was an adventure we will not soon forget. Not only did we have an amazing few days, but we forged friendships and memories that I’m sure will last a lifetime. Duncan was even offered a job, once he graduates high school.
