Housing Market Outlook For 2014 The question I get asked most often is “How is the housing market these days?” “Positive Healthy Steady Growth” is my answer. If we look back at the last 3 years, we will all agree, house prices have been increasing steadily in all areas and communities throughout GTA. In fact, the average selling price in January 2014 is UP by 9% over January 2013. The historically low inventory in the “Resale Homes” and the incredibly low mortgage interest rates continue to apply strong pressure on selling prices. It is anticipated that, as more and more Sellers take advantage of these conditions with the upcoming Spring market, we should see an increase in inventory, which in turn will benefit buyers offering them more homes to choose from. . Jason Mercer, Senior Manager of Market Analysis at TREB summarized it by saying: “The pace of price growth will remain strong in 2014. Similar to last year, competition between buyers for singles, semis and town homes in the City of Toronto and surrounding regions will continue to exert upward pressure on selling prices. At the same time, mortgage rates will remain near historic lows, so despite strong price growth, home ownership will remain affordable for the average household in the GTA,” Looking forward to reporting back to you with 1st quarter Sales Stats for 2014

welcome

It might seem a bit optimistic to be delivering our spring issue on March 20 (the official first day of the season) this year. As I write this (about a month before you read it), we are bracing for the latest weather challenge of this winter—a thunderstorm promising ice pellets and heavy rains. From ice storms and heavy snowfalls to polar vortexes and wind chills to grey day after grey day, this winter has provided us every excuse for staying at home under a blanket, warming drink in hand, binge-watching the latest television drama. And, with the end of February in my sights, I can’t help but feel a true change in season is a long way off. If ever we needed a breath of spring air, it’s now. And we hope you’ll find that in these pages. On the home front, we bring you stories of two kitchen renovations: one that opens up a typical 1980s two-storey and another that puts a modern spin on a century home. The latter is also the first in a series we’re calling Rooms Gone Right—which will feature favourite spaces of local residents and provide insight and inspiration to our readers. (Please contact me at goodlifeeditor@yrmg.com if you have a room we should showcase.) If a fresh coat of paint is in your future, you’ll find the latest colours and ideas for where and how to use them. And we have tips and tricks from the experts for making the most out of spring cleaning. But perhaps thoughts of warmer weather are encouraging you to emerge from hibernation. We have ideas for getting out, too. Hit the mat with writer Jonathan Hiltz as he gets (and shares) a lesson in hot yoga. Attend a local maple syrup festival and bring some of the sweet stuff home to try in a new recipe. Explore the world of meet-ups, where people connect on the Internet, then get together to share a passion, enjoy an outing or learn from one another. Take some inspiration from York Region cultural leaders as they reveal their thoughts on the good life in this issue and on Twitter at #YorkRegionArtsSelfies.

We hope you enjoy this issue.

Black, white, green or red. Early morning, midafternoon or just before bed. Travel cup, fine china or hefty pottery mug. Straight-up, with milk and sugar, a squeeze of lemon, spiced or iced. Chances are you’re drinking more tea than you did a few years ago. According to Canadian Food Trends to 2020, a report commissioned by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, our collective tea consumption is on the rise—expected to jump 40 per cent from 2003 to 2020, as growing interest in health and wellness leads to increasing awareness of tea’s functional benefits. Or you might just like the taste. To find tea and tea accessories, we visited three retailers: Teavana, a chain with stores in malls across York Region; Chapters Indigo, which sells items from Tea Forté alongside its books and other housewares; and Victorian Tea Room, which serves and sells teas and more on Yonge Street in Thornhill. Open house Main floor reno creates welcoming space for family, guests by

Sue Kanhai

photography by

Jim craigmyle

Rob and Rose-Anne Seccareccia have lived in their 2,400-square-foot Unionville home for the past 17 years. When they bought it, the house was 11 years old and their three young sons were just four, six and seven years old. Mrs. Seccareccia, a talented cook and baker, always encouraged her kids to help her in the kitchen. “If the boys heard the clank of a bowl, they’d fly in,” she says. They’d use the opened door of the dishwasher as their work surface, cracking and whisking eggs. “If it spilled it didn’t matter. It was at their height and pretty convenient.” Typical of many homes in the area, the main floor is divided into thirds: dining room, kitchen and family room. Depending on the square footage and model of the home, these divisions can make for a bit of a tight squeeze. The Seccareccias are an active, social household. They have a big extended family and a large and ever-widening circle of friends. As the boys got older, and bigger, it became more of a challenge having everyone fit. “We needed to figure it out,” Mrs. Seccareccia says “We definitely entertain a ton. I love cooking and we have a lot of company. It was one of the reasons why I needed the renovation.” 14

The Seccareccia boys are now all grown up and her early efforts have clearly paid off. They now throw dinner parties of their own and don’t need any help from her. Like their mom, they are brave in the kitchen and like trying new recipes when entertaining guests. Before starting the renovation, the Seccareccias spent a year doing research and then an additional year talking to different designers and contractors, trying to figure out what they needed and find the right person who understood that. They wanted to take down a wall to open things up. “We interviewed about 12 different contractors and most of them discouraged me from taking out the wall,” Mrs. Seccareccia says. “But we wanted our kids with us, not divided from us.” They chose contractor Bob White of Inspired Design and Renovations. “He had a great attitude,” Mrs. Seccareccia says. “He said, OK, we can work with this, let’s figure this out. Nothing was too much of a challenge.” Mrs. Seccareccia knew what had been frustrating her. She needed decent, uninterrupted prep space, a zone for the kids, a big stove and an extra oven. Her boys are coffee aficionados so a drinks zone was also essential, a place where they could help 16

out but not be in her way. They relocated the dining room from the back of the house to the front and got rid of a sunken floor. All new cabinetry makes meticulous use of space. They added a counter-height island that seats 10. Mrs. Seccareccia now has a space devoted exclusively to baking, including a cupboard for all of her tools and equipment. She has a huge expanse of granite to roll out her homemade pie dough. The beverage area contains its own sink and mini fridge. When she’s cooking, you’ll find her working happily away between the sink, her ovens, pantry and prep area. “I have about 24 people here for a street dinner and they actually don’t even come into this area any more. It used to be a fight in the kitchen, now they’re all busy visiting and nobody crosses over into this space. It’s great because I can continue prepping,” she says. Mr. White listened closely to Mrs. Seccareccia’s needs and proposed solutions. “He was the leader in this, the brains behind it. I knew what I needed but not how to accomplish it,” she says. “Sometimes contractors want you to be the visionary and make all of the decisions. Bob made it easy because he had a vision of his own.”

Mr. White is a talented designer with an art background, so clients get a skilled contractor and designer in one. He’s been in this line of work since the age of 11. “The layout with this project was particularly interesting,” he says. “I designed it to meet Rose-Anne’s needs.” He enjoyed putting the colours together, choosing the granite and stone, paint colours for the walls and ceiling. He likes working with customers and finding out what they want, while adding his know-how and expertise. “I’ve seen too many designers where they just have one style and they push it on the customer,” he says. “It’s not right. I like change; I like things to be a little bit eclectic. I mix it up a bit.” “Bob gets all of the credit,” Mrs. Seccareccia says. “He made some really good decisions and was great to work with. He’s an artist.” It’s an accurate statement. Mr. White is also an abstract painter who exhibits and sells his work. A project that gutted the whole main floor to the studs, the transformation took Mr. White and his team just 2-1/2 months. The biggest challenge, Mrs. Seccareccia says, was dealing with the dust. “But here’s what was great—this is really ridiculous,” she says. “When you have a renovation, there’s no point cleaning and you can’t really cook. It was kind of a vacation from cooking and cleaning. There was no guilt about it at all.” The renovation was completed in November 2012. A year later, the 18

Removing a wall gave the main floor of the Seccareccia home an expansive, welcoming feel.

Seccareccias were asked to put their home on the Markham Unionville Homes for the Holidays house tour. Mrs. Seccareccia wanted to get some holiday decorating ideas and the family was also keen to support Markham Stouffville Hospital. Now that her kitchen is done, friends hope Mrs. Seccareccia will start offering cooking classes. While she looks forward to retiring from teaching in a couple of years, she’s not sure cooking lessons are the path she’ll take. Trained as a chef, she went to George Brown and did a two-year program in

culinary management. Despite not choosing it as a career, she continues to have a passion for cooking. She’s in particular demand at Christmas time, when she does holiday baking for several of her friends. What’s their reaction been to the new and improved space? “People are shocked at the transformation because it’s so open, it just feels so much bigger,” she says. “I’ve had a number of friends walk in and they’ve hired Bob because they just can’t believe the difference.”

We begin in a family-friendly kitchen that introduces a splash of modern to a centuryold home while enhancing some of its unique character. Three years ago, Aurora homeowner Elise Volpe renovated her kitchen in hopes of achieving more functionality and space in the home she shares with her husband and two growing sons. The result combines a fresh white backdrop with fun pops of colour; clean, modern lines anchored with original detailing; and a whole lot of extra space and storage (that looks good, too!). The project, which took about seven weeks to complete, was a strictly budgeted opportunity to renew a dated kitchen. Ms Volpe, who is studying interior design and who has a flare for style, set to work and transformed the space.

Why the change? Old kitchen Dated, chipped cabinetry Ugly laminate counter Lack of storage

Renovation checklist Modern look More storage Giant pantry cupboards that span eating area Maximize functionality of space Add overhang to counter to create breakfast bar and additional seating Pendant lighting over breakfast bar Higher quality cabinets and appliances

splurges The family kept to a pretty tight budget, but spent more money on good quality appliances, the deep, modern sink and faucet.

Bargains Using Ikea cabinetry was affordable and avoided the added cost of custom work.

Favourite features Ms Volpe has three: the quartz countertop, bar fridge and custom window treatment.

Favourite stores • HomeSense for great bargains • Ikea, CB2, Crate and Barrel, EQ3 for well-priced furniture with nice lines

Paint colours Trim, walls: Benjamin Moore cloud white (CC-40) Accent wall: black chalkboard paint “The white didn’t scare me,” Ms Volpe says of keeping things clean with two young sons. “Washable paint cleans up pretty well and little nicks or marks would show up just the same, if not worse, on darker colours.”

hindsight is 20/20 While the family is happy in the new space, small compromises were made to keep spending in check. “I would have loved a bigger sink and to relocate some electrical fixtures but a budget is a budget and we had to draw the line somewhere,” Ms Volpe says.

Final verdict “I like that I have a clean, new kitchen but with older features—like the old wood doors and doorknobs and the brickwork,” Ms Volpe says. “These original parts juxtapose the modern elements, giving the room a unique and interesting feel. Some people prefer an all modern kitchen or like to stick with one style, but I prefer a mix of styles that complement an individual’s personality and makes their space truly their own. This kitchen feels like me.”

A clean break Small changes add up to a tidy, organized home by

Joann macdonald

After a long, cold winter, spring finally bestows on us the opportunity to open our windows and let in a fresh breeze. As the gentle wind blows off the dust of winter, many of us naturally feel the urge to purge the clutter from our homes. But with today’s busy schedules, we often don’t have the solid day or two (or more!) necessary to eliminate all the detritus accumulated over the winter. Not to worry. The experts say you can still prepare your home for the busy summer ahead by organizing in baby steps. Shake off the malaise of winter and get started with these simple tips.

commit to daily organization. Set aside time each day for decluttering and organizing. “Use a timer to keep your focus on the task,” suggests professional organizer Susan Toth, owner of found-it! organizing solutions in Richmond Hill. Involve family members. Even small children can tidy up bedrooms and play areas. Have each person end the day by tidying a designated room. Four family members participating in even a “10-minute tidy” makes for 40 minutes of work. And Mom didn’t have to do it all herself!

say no to multi-tasking. “Multi-tasking is the worst thing possible because you don’t do anything well and it takes twice as long,” says Lois Kennedy, owner of 3 Step Results Inc., a Newmarket-based company that provides workplace productivity solutions. “Finish one task before moving onto the next. It’s a wonderful feeling if you find a focused period of time each day.”

Write it down. Keep a running list of areas you want to organize and slowly tick items off the list. “I always tell my clients that any large organizing project is really made up of a whole bunch of small projects,” Ms Kennedy says. “If they look at the big picture it becomes overwhelming. But if they write their tasks down in small, measurable pieces and tackle them, they start to feel the sense of accomplishment.” spring 2014

today when you pick up the mail. Instead of just dropping the mail pile on a random surface, think about the best area to help you deal with it.” If it’s the entryway, hang a mail station near the door. If it’s the kitchen, consider a small file box with hanging folders. Designate one folder for unopened mail and other folders for categorized actions, such as to pay, to act and to file. Shred unneeded papers that contain personal information.

Start with your entryway. Your home’s entryway has likely suffered the most abuse over the winter. “The entryway has been keeping the outdoor dirt at bay with floor mats and boot trays,” Ms Toth says. “It has been occupied by clunky boots, bulky coats and containers filled with mittens, hats and scarves.” Focus your first 10-minute session on decluttering this crucial area.

Sort through winter wear. As you relocate winter coats and accessories to a basement closet or storage container, Ms Kennedy says it’s the perfect opportunity to fill your donation bin. “It’s a great time to just purge,” she says. “If you think, ‘I’m not going to wear that next winter.’ put it in the bin.” This is especially true of kids’ outerwear. If it won’t fit them next year, why allow it to take up valuable real estate?

Show your kitchen some love. Your kitchen is the heart of your home. Unfortunately, it also attracts a large portion of the clutter. If the kitchen is the focus of your mini organizing session, choose one drawer, one cupboard or even one shelf in the fridge. And check expiry dates. 34

GoodLife

spring 2014

Tackle one drawer at a time.

“If you purge the expired stuff, you’ll be amazed at how much more space you have,” Ms Kennedy says. If your kitchen counter is a drop zone for paper, school supplies and gift-wrap, designate homes for items that are a recurring problem.

Drawers tend to become hiding spots for items that don’t have proper homes. Choose a drawer regularly to re-sort. “Open the nightstand drawer, the office supplies drawer or the ‘junk drawer’ in the kitchen,” Ms Toth says. “Sort all the items into categories.” Contain small, loose items using drawer bins from a dollar store. “If you are creative, you can make your own bins from cereal boxes cut down to the right height,” she suggests. Relocate out-of-place items to their proper homes.

Clear your bathroom clutter. “We only use a small percentage of our bathroom supplies regularly,” Ms Toth says. “All those half-used containers and travelsize items from hotels need to be addressed.” Toss expired cosmetics and dust-covered toiletries you’ll never use again. Consider donating useful, unopened items to local shelters.

Conquer the beast in the basement. Old toys, outgrown clothing, memorabilia from a lifetime—it’s all in the basement. Can you tackle that much clutter with just 15 minutes of work a day? You sure can, says Ms Kennedy. “Start in one corner and break it up into little areas. Tell yourself ‘I’m going to tackle one area today and then I’m going to walk away.’” What if you just can’t let go of all that stuff? “Purging is ideal, but some people have trouble with it,” Ms Kennedy says. Ask yourself whether you’re keeping items for sentimental reasons rather than usefulness. Pick one or two of your favourites to keep or revisit the items in question regularly. “Every time you go through them you’ll let more go,” Ms Kennedy says.

Tame paper pile-ups. “Paper is always an issue, but it can be tamed if you create and maintain a papercollecting system,” Ms Toth says. “Start

Make your home office work. Whether you work from home or use your office for household functions, Ms Kennedy says you should ensure it’s a clutter-free space. “You would never cook with your countertops covered in stuff. Same goes for your office,” she says. “If you work in a cluttered space, your mind is cluttered. It results in lost energy.”

Replace bad habits with good. As you chip away at the cluttered areas, you’ll find something amazing happens. You’re less likely to clutter those areas again. “What you’re trying to do is form a new, good habit and that takes consistency,” Ms Kennedy says. “We go down a path that’s well worn. We need to take repetitive action to develop good habits to replace the bad.”

Maple syrup forever by

lee ann WaTerman

photography by

I can’t remember that last time I made pancakes or French toast—and yet my kitchen is always stocked with maple syrup. I love the complexity of its flavour, which reaches far beyond sweet, and use it in a variety of recipes as a substitute for sugar or for its own unique taste. “Liquid gold” is how Adrian O’Driscoll, supervisor of education at the Kortright Centre in Woodbridge, aptly describes it. The local conservation area taps 100 to 150 sugar maples every spring and shares the process (and rewards) of turning sap into syrup with the public. Maple syrup season in Ontario, Mr. O’Driscoll says, usually runs from the end of February to the end of March, but depends on the weather. For the sap to flow, temperatures must be below 0 Celsius during the night and above during the day. All pure maple syrup sold in Canada must have 66.5 per cent sugar content. Grades and colour classes (extra light, light, amber, etc.) reflect the time of the season when the syrup is produced, Mr. O’Driscoll explains. Early in the season, the sap has a higher sugar content and does not have to be boiled as long to reach 66.5 per cent— resulting in a lighter, less viscous syrup. Mr. O’Driscoll prefers a medium syrup, made from later season sap that must be boiled longer, for its “smoky, stronger flavour.” Sweeter than sugar, maple syrup contains antioxidants, more potassium in 60 mL (1/4 cup) than a banana and more calcium than an equal amount of milk, as well as zinc and manganese.

MAPLE WALNUT GRANOLA Adapted from a recipe in Calgary cook Julie Van Rosendaal’s book Grazing, this is my go-to granola. It’s quick to make, stores well, doesn’t call for oil (as many recipes do) and the variations are endless. I like the molasses flavour brown sugar adds, but you can substitute another 125 mL (1/2 cup) of maple syrup or an equal amount of honey. I love the combination of allspice and maple, but you could also try cinnamon. Use whatever combination of nuts and dried fruit you like. IngRedIents

1,500 mL (6 cups) large flake oats 375 mL (1-1/2 cups) chopped walnuts 375 mL (1-1/2 cups) raisins 125 mL (1/2 cup) brown sugar 125 mL (1/2 cup) maple syrup 2 mL (1/2 tsp) salt 5 mL (1 tsp) ground allspice Method

Preheat oven to 300 Fahrenheit. In a microwave-save measuring cup stir together brown sugar and 60 mL (1/4 cup) water. Microwave on high for 30 seconds or until sugar has melted. In large bowl, combine oats, walnuts, salt, allspice, maple syrup and brown sugar mixture. Mix well. Spread oat mixture on large rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring after 15 minutes. Remove from oven, add raisins and stir. Let cool and store in an airtight container.

Cedar-planked Maple Dijon Trout This deceptively simple dish is one I turn to again and again. The maple syrup, Dijon and smoky cedar combine for a rich flavour greater than the sum of its parts. It works equally well with individual portions for a plated dinner, a whole side of trout for a buffet table or a generous piece to nibble at along with sliced cucumbers and tomatoes, good bread and cheese (with enough leftover for trout salad for tomorrow’s lunch). Ingredients

Method

steelhead trout (or salmon)

Soak a cedar plank in water for at least a couple of hours or as long as overnight. (You can buy pre-cut planks at the grocery store or you can buy an untreated board at the home improvement store and cut your own lengths.) Remove plank from water. Place trout, skin-side down, on plank. Mix equal parts maple syrup and Dijon, gauging amounts based on the quantity of fish. Spoon or brush on trout. Place plank on grill over high heat. Close lid. Cook about 20 minutes, until fish is firm to the touch.

MAPLE CRÈME BRÛLÉE I can rarely resist the crème brûlée when I’m out for dinner and I still talk about a version flavoured with pure maple syrup I ate years ago. To recreate it at home just required the right tools and a little tweaking of a classic recipe. IngRedIents

500 mL (2 cups) heavy cream 1/2 vanilla bean 125 mL (1/2 cup) maple syrup 1 egg 3 egg yolks granulated or maple sugar for topping Method

Preheat oven to 325 Fahrenheit. Cut vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape to remove seeds. Add seeds, pod and cream to a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Heat until bubbles start to form around edge of pan. Remove from heat. In large bowl, whisk together maple syrup, egg and egg yolks until wellblended. Add cream, a little at time, whisking continuously.

Strain mixture into a large measuring cup. Place 6 125 mL (4 oz) ramekins in a baking dish. Pour mixture into ramekins. Using hot tap water, fill baking dish until water reaches halfway up the ramekins. Bake for approximately 40 minutes. Custard should be set but still tremble when shaken. Remove baking dish from oven and ramekins from dish. Cool, then refrigerate for at least two hours or overnight. To serve, sprinkle sugar evenly over the top of custards (about 10 mL or 2 tsp each). Using a torch, melt the sugar to form a crunchy top. Allow to sit for a few minutes before serving. note

Although you can use your oven’s broiler to melt the sugar, I recommend a torch for the best results.

The Sugarbush Maple Syrup Festival runs until April 6 at the Kortright Centre in Woodbridge and Bruce’s Mill Conservation Centre in Stouffville.

Eggplant Salad

Kruzo Grill by

Jonathan Hiltz Naomi Hiltz

Mediterranean places are a dime a dozen these days. On what seems like every street corner in York Region, there is a restaurateur who sells chicken shish kebab, rice, pitas, hummus and various other tasty treats. Most of them are quality establishments, but few stand out, Enter into the room Kruzo Grill, located on the northeast corner of Dufferin and Centre streets in Thornhill. This boutique establishment is regularly filled with customers for lunch and dinner and for good reason—the fabulous food. Roman Zabrailov, the chef behind this strip mall gem, brings 15 years experience in the restaurant business and the knowledge of gourmet cuisine from three different countries to the table. Mr. Zabrailov began his career as a young man, at a restaurant in his native Russia and then, at 22, he moved to Israel. There he worked his way up, eventually owning four restaurants. But he decided to move

to Canada because “Israeli weather was not for him” and he wanted to live in a similar climate to the one in which he grew up. Israel’s loss is York Region’s gain as he brings his knowledge of food to Kruzo Grill. Mr. Zabrailov was the chef at the former Bissli Grill, in the same location; he soon bought the place and made it his own. Working alongside Mr. Zabrailov is right hand man Leonid Khakis, who is the personality of the group. Watching him work, it’s easy to see his skill in this type of cuisine—carving seared meat from the rotating skewer or rolling tender chicken with fresh vegetables and sauce into a soft warm pita for the Schwarma Laffa. Signature dishes of Kruzo Grill include the beef stroganoff and beef ribs but the most popular item by far is the schwarma and falafel. The food is made to order and Mr. Zabrailov keeps his ingredient inventory low on purpose to ensure the utmost freshness. Made-from-scratch side dishes and salads include hummus, baba ghanoush, sautéed mushrooms and eggplant in a sweet spicy sauce among other delights. Kruzo Grill is open seven days a week for dine in or take out.

Mix ketchup, sugar, salt, spices, garlic, vinegar and 60 mL (1/4 cup) of water together until well-blended. Chill sauce in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Heat oven to 375 Fahrenheit. Chop eggplants into 2-1/2-cm (1-inch) pieces. Put eggplants in an oven-safe dish and cover with olive oil. Cover dish and put in the oven for 10-12 minutes or until eggplants are golden brown. The

meet-up A modern take on making friends Kinjal V. Shah

Taunya Ahier and Mike Bordynuik met 10 years ago washing dishes at a meet-up group for vegetarians in Toronto. “We were part of a group that met every Sunday at a Unitarian church to enjoy a vegetarian potluck. A handful of us always offered to do the clean-up after the potlucks. Mike and I ended up washing dishes beside each other, week after week, and became friends,” Ms Ahier recalls. Mr. Bordynuik asked her out for an evening of rock climbing, another passion of his at the time. “Having tried to conquer my fear of heights but being unsuccessful at it, I declined the climb with Mike, and invited him out to dinner instead,” she says. Romance bloomed and the couple married, had two children and settled in Stouffville The potluck was an event where friends could hang out, network and feel a part of the vegetarian community in the city, Ms Ahier says. “In honour of the way we met, we had a veggie potluck dinner at our wedding,” Ms Ahier says. “It was amazing and so much fun.” Theirs is a story that speaks to a bigger trend. Meet-up groups bring together likeminded individuals and offer an easy way to meet people and make new friends in an era of busy schedules and fast-paced lives. Judging by the number and variety of groups sprouting in York Region alone, there’s evidence to suggest the groups are popular and sought after. For a mere $15 a year per member, Monica Mueller runs a group called Spirited Women Adventures that brings women together for some fresh air and camaraderie. “It’s been a great way to meet up with others in York Region who are raising kids, eating healthily and looking to get involved in our communities.” after spending some years in Vancouver, she stumbled across a meet-up group that focused on consuming raw food and thought the concept had potential. “I thought it was a good idea and decided to start a group that would bring women together for some outdoor fun,” says Ms Mueller, who launched the group in 2007. “My group mostly has women in their late 40s and early 50s looking for a change in life. They are either dealing with kids going away to university or a divorce or simply a mid-life identity crisis. My aim is to offer them a safe environment in which to find themselves again and make connections. It is about communication and socialization while getting some exercise and staying fit.” Ms Mueller’s group has been running strong for more than six years and has grown into a 200-member tribe. The events focus mainly on walking, biking, enjoying the outdoors and the occasional cup of coffee. There are also weekend getaways and an annual fall retreat that’s about sharing and laughing while engaging in outdoor activities. “If I had a dollar for every woman who says she ‘used’ to bike, ski or hike, I would be a millionaire,” Ms Mueller says. “Most women dedicate their lives to their jobs and kids while putting themselves and their own interests on the back burner. They suddenly find themselves at crossroads when people move on or they retire. “I don’t include men in the group because I don’t want the members to worry about what they look like and run to wear makeup. The group is to help women feel free and find trust and friendship.” She recently organized the group’s trip across the border to Sedona, Ariz. Twelve women signed up for a journey that Ms Mueller describes as “spiritual”. Stouffville residents Taunya Ahier and Mike Bordynuik, shown here with children Oatie and Mathilda, met at a Toronto meet-up group for vegetarians 10 years ago. Now, they are part of the York Region Vegetarian Family Group.

Members of Spirited Women Adventures come together regularly for outdoor fun—ranging from a trip to Sedona, Ariz. (right) to kayaking in Elora, Ont. (above).

“It was an amazing experience and I hope to organize more such trips,” she says. Ms Mueller says the group has become an important part of her life. “I grew up at a cottage surrounded by nature,” she says. “It was a rugged childhood that taught me to appreciate nature. We loved taking people out for walks and experience how nature can touch one’s soul and help one form deep friendships. I didn’t get married and have never had children. I feel my life’s calling is to offer this experience to people and make a difference in their lives.” Finding the right meet-up group can help you feel part of a community. After moving to Stouffville, Ms Ahier started the York Region Vegetarian Family Group for the Toronto Vegetarian Association. Members meet up for potlucks, meals at vegetarian restaurants and outings to hike in the York Region Forest. Families with children of all ages come out. “Our events happen monthly and are for vegetarian families or families looking to transition to vegetarian or to include more vegetarian eating in their diet,” Ms Ahier says. “I plan and coordinate the events but my husband, toddler son and baby daughter

get involved. It’s been a great way to meet up with others in York Region who are raising kids, eating healthily and looking to get involved in our communities.” Meet-up groups aren’t always attached to goals of contributing to a cause or community. Sometimes they are about finding personal satisfaction or simply spending an evening with people that share similar interests. Not surprisingly, there are meet-ups associated with a wide range of interests from careers to soul-searching to parenting to urban gardening to board gaming. Mike Wilson, 31, who organizes the Richmond Hill Friends group, swears by the positive effects of getting involved in a meet-up. “The groups are all about socializing, making new friends and having new experiences,” he says. “At first, I joined a few to find a support group to help me with a hard time in my life and ended up becoming an event organizer.” Richmond Hill Friends has 250 to 300 members and organizes several different events throughout the week to accommodate different interests and schedules. There are board game nights, Tuesday night movies, dinner and drinks, badminton and tennis

matches and trips to events such as the Markham Fair and Taste of Danforth. “We do a wide range of things but the variety appeals to many members,” Mr. Wilson says.

In a fast-moving world connected mostly through a technological interface, the personal nature of a meet-up group is perhaps a way to slow down the fragmentation of human interaction.

Reflections on the local good life by

#yorkregionartsSelfies You may be quite familiar with the “selfie” trend where people take photos of themselves on their smart phones and post them on social media. I asked a few people I know who are movers and shakers in the York Region arts scene to send me their selfies and share why they think York Region represents the “good life.” It was

a fun and genuine request. I know these individuals are passionate about the arts, strongly involved in their communities and making a positive difference in York Region. In my view, the good life is characterized by community and these people, along with countless others, help our community and quality of place.

here is what the #yorkregionartsSelfies had to say about the good life in york region.

There is always something exciting to do here in York Region. From galleries and museums to festivals and art in the park, I love the vibrant artistic and cultural mosaic that makes living and working here truly part of the good life!

York Region is the epicentre of what the world aspires to be as we embark on the varied and real challenges of the 21st century. Beyond its vivid and sundry landscapes, world class theatre venues, art galleries, eateries and unique finds, York Region and its arts community are invested in exploring the richness and complexities embodied in those who inhabit it spaces—the people. Our region has one of the most diverse populations on the planet. It is the greatest source of our good life.

Césan d’Ornellas Levine Sensual, cerebral work by

jim craigmyle

spring 2014

Abstract expressionist painter Césan d’Ornellas Levine is working away at some awfully big questions. The hallmarks of Ms Levine’s work are brilliant colour, sweeping movement and a sculptural mix of acrylic gels, pastes and pumices. The artist creates large, contemporary pieces on canvas and wood panel. She traces her earliest influence back to when she was just four or five years old. Her family would take her to the forest north of Peterborough to visit the petroglyphs, an enormous slab of white limestone that

features ancient stone art. It had about a thousand symbols carved into it—many of them recognizable, like a person, sun or boat; others were more mysterious. Young Césan would lie on the rock and trace the carvings with her fingers. “I think that’s why my work is so textural, earthy and sensual, because of this kind of forest-y experience. I really feel like the creative voice I work from was given to me in that place,” she says. Another big influence is her mixed heritage. With what she describes as a “huge range of cultures and ethnicities”

TOP: Rays and Joy (4ft. by 5ft.), $5,200 BOTTOM: Midnight Sun (5ft. by 4ft.), $4,800

in her make-up, she has always wondered what forms and symbols there are for people like her. For these and other reasons she is drawn to iconographic forms and symbols, things such as the sun, trees and apples, which are shared by different cultures and religions throughout the world. The more purely abstract work she does she considers either the beginning or the end of the development of these same forms. “I’m exploring the outer edges of iconography,” she says. Several videos of the artist on YouTube show her process. She tends to work flat, adding layer after layer of thick paint. She navigates the substantial size of her canvases often by walking directly on top of them. Friends in Markham have a barn they let her paint in in the summer. Last year she was working on a piece that was 12 feet wide and she couldn’t reach the middle. These same friends happen to be hanggliders so they rigged up a harness for her. She carried on painting, suspended from the rafters. It’s an image that seems, somehow, to sum her up perfectly. The dedicated artist has had a studio practice for 25 years, which she’s worked at full-time since 2002. “I’m quite prolific,” she says. “People who know me would say I take my work very seriously.” Her light-filled studio backs onto a forest and is in her home, which itself has an interesting pedigree. Two famous Canadian sculptors, David and Royden Rabinowitch, grew up there and their mother, Ruth Rabinowitch, was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin. She designed the house in the spirit of Wright’s Usonian style. Says Ms Levine, “I get to live and work in this house that’s just got art in its bones.” As a student, she studied Eastern religion and art history at McMaster University. She was greatly influenced by Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, in particular a book he wrote called Concerning the Spiritual in Art. At the end there’s a small section where he talks about esoteric practices and personal development. It resonated with the budding artist. Ms Levine’s personal development takes several forms. They include her dietary practices. She fasts for long periods, whether days or weeks, in preparation for painting a body of work. She’s devoted to meditation and sitting in silence. She does yoga and aerobic exercise regularly. She also uses self-awareness techniques. spring 2014

“All of this is a way to prepare for studio practice, to enhance it,” she says. It helps dispel fears about performance or markmaking, exposure or desire. She doesn’t teach painting classes but rather the occasional art workshop where she helps fellow artists develop their own self-awareness techniques. “It isn’t going to serve anybody to show them how I paint. That’s not going to help anyone develop anything original,” she says. She certainly lives the example. Ms Levine deliberately tries not to get too involved with what other artists are doing because she finds it distracting. “I keep my focus by working on my own: developing it in my own way, stretching it out and pushing it, making mistakes and going too far, testing things out,” she says. Her advice to fledgling artists is to spend hundreds and hundreds of hours in the studio to find their original voice. One of her talks is how to run a business as an artist. She recommends using high quality materials and the best paints so work has archival value, lasts and looks good. Learning how to be comfortable talking to people is also important for professional artists. “That’s my approach but it’s not the popular perception. When parents approach me and say, ‘My kid wants to become an artist. What art school should they go to?’ I say, ‘Don’t go to art school. Spend the money on time to develop your craft. Then, if you really want to be a professional artist, you might go to business school.’” Those parents may do well to heed her advice. Ms Levine is commercially successful and can support herself by selling her work. Lately she’s been experimenting with solar pyrography—using a magnifying glass to focus the sun’s rays and burn her designs into large wood panels. It’s an art form mainly used in folk art rather than contemporary fine art, she says. She began the process two summers ago with the help of her studio assistants. “It’s very slow going, particularly so because we hardly ever get purely sunny days here,” she says. “It takes a really long time. You’re going inch by inch so it’s very meditative work.” The series features ancient sun symbols from all over the world. “I always thought, ‘Wouldn’t it just be so pure to paint the sun with the sun?’” Currently her work is sold through two main galleries, in Toronto and Ottawa. A solo show at Toronto’s Petroff Gallery, featuring her sun series paintings, starts May 1 and runs until the end of the month. Art times 3 Generations share creative passion by

Kinjal V. Shah mARY COOK PHOTOGRAPH

Three generations of artists—and several different forms of art—merge seamlessly within the shared space of Diana Bullock’s family home in Stouffville. Closely related as the three women are, their creative output is distinctly different. Grace MacPherson, who turns 90 in July, enjoys her brush with watercolours, while daughter Diana has discovered the beauty and simplicity of sumi-e (Japanese ink paintings). Granddaughter Allison has tried many media from photography to watercolour and even coloured pencil but has lately been leaning toward mix-media collage. For someone whose artistic endeavours were limited to the odd “paint by number” until she retired, Ms MacPherson has many paintings to her credit.

“I never had the opportunity to be in an art class,” says the nonagenarian who grew up on the Canadian Prairies and in England. Her life is an eclectic mix of interests and experiences. She attended high school in Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force upon graduation. After serving in the Second World War, she worked as a dental nurse and was later employed in the credit industry. Her tryst with painting happened quite by accident. She enrolled in a class at the Haliburton School of Fine Arts called Victorian

Fancies—expecting it to be about making cards, trinkets and other pretty little things— but there weren’t enough participants. “The registrar suggested I take a course in watercolours,” she recalls. “I had never pursued any kind of painting so I wasn’t really keen about the idea but she assured me I would like the instructor. By the end of the week, I was very pleased that I had succeeded in this art form and was anxious to continue. I have been painting ever since.” Her inspiration lies in the many miles she has travelled from coast to coast. “I have been to so many beautiful places, from the Far North and Alaska to Newfoundland,” she says. “Besides, there is so much beauty right here in Ontario that you don’t have to go too far to be inspired. Algonquin Park and the Haliburton area are two of my favourites.” The person she was before she retired and the artist she is now seem like two different people. “Before my retirement from the business world, I had no inclination to paint. I was interested in knitting and sewing and was busy with other activities,” she says. “I now have the time to pursue my interest in watercolours. I find it very rewarding when I set time aside to paint and then discover I have a painting worthy of a frame.” Ms MacPherson’s newly discovered interest led to family excursions to the Haliburton School of Fine Arts. Daughter Diana and grandchildren Allison and Shawn

also enrolled in art workshops and soon there were several artists in the making. “We had many wonderful summers attending these weeklong workshops and creating art,” Diana says. “I renewed my interest in watercolours and discovered sumi-e. Its beauty, simplicity and Zen quality led me to study the Nagna style of sumi-e at the Japanese Cultural Centre.” In 1999, she submitted a test painting for

judging—a requirement to earn her “seal”, the red mark that accompanies every Sumi-e artist’s work. She continues to study eastern art in workshops with artists from China and Japan and is an active member of the Sumi-e Artists of Canada, as well as the Lemonville Group of Artists. Diana has also volunteered for the York-Durham Aphasia Centre for the

past 24 years, developing an art for communication program to assist adults with communication difficulties that occur after a stroke, brain injury or brain disease. “This program encourages clients to find self-expression through drawing and painting by focusing on the process and not the product,” she explains. “We have a lot of fun and I am always impressed by their willingness to try the things I suggest to help.” The trio comes together to showcase their works once a year in October in the Stouffville Studio Tour. During this weekend event, local artists open their homes and studios for the public to view their artistic creations.

Third-generation artist Allison is an integral part of this annual tradition. “The studio tour is the only time we display our work together so it is special,” she says. “We usually determine how big the space is and try to hang equally. Equal doesn’t necessarily mean the same number of paintings; we try to create visual equality. Paintings can’t simply be put on a wall. They have to work together in terms of colour scheme, subject and size. If that means that my mom or grandmother has more paintings hanging than I do, that’s fine because the better our paintings look together, the better it is for the show.” For Allison, becoming an artist wasn’t a conscious decision but “an organic process”—not surprising considering her family. “My earliest memories are of drawing pictures to put on my parents’ refrigerator,” she says, adding her formal art education began with summer courses at the age of 11. Throughout high school and university, she took many studio and art history courses and attended workshops as well as seminars. But art was never thrust upon her. “I make art only for myself because I am compelled to,” she says. “There are times

when I don’t feel particularly creative and other times when I do, but when I create art I am only aware of my immediate creative vision. “My mom, grandmother and I pursue art on our own. Even when we attended art school, we took different courses and saw each other’s work only at the end of the day.” As head of the history department at a York Region high school, Allison considers herself a full-time teacher and a full-time artist. “Creating art is only one part of being an artist. We also think about art, look at the work of other artists and engage in the art community. There might be a month or two when I’m not able to paint anything but I don’t ever stop being an artist,” she explains. Diana agrees art is a full-time pursuit and way of life. While the three women pursue distinctly different forms of art, their sensibilities are the uniting factor. “It is wonderful to be able to share a creative passion with your mother and daughter, but we each have a definite different style and approach to our art,” she says. From grandmother to mother to granddaughter, the art this trio creates is as omnipresent in their lives as it is on the walls of their homes.

Richmond Hill’s Hannah Alper believes you can never be too young to make an impact on the world. Having just turned 11 years old in January, the fifth grader has already taken big steps to prove that point. Hannah explains her desire to make a difference originates from her love for animals. “I’ve always loved animals,” she says. “Animals rely on the environment and they rely on us to help the environment.” As she looked for ways to make her own unique contribution, Hannah credits her parents for providing encouragement and support. “My parents are amazing and I’ve learned so much from them, including the importance of being a good citizen,” she said. After attending a workshop on WordPress (a free blogging and content management tool) in July 2012, Hannah wasted little time in launching callmehannah.ca, an online blog dedicated to her passions—with a strong focus on protecting the environment. Her mother, Candace, a successful entrepreneur and her father, Eric, director of media relations at eOne Music Canada, were fully on board, supporting Hannah through editing and promoting her new project. “Whether it’s community work or any other extracurricular activities, finding passions that you can do together as a family only enriches the quality of your relationships and brings your family closer together,” Mrs. Alper says. The young activist’s new blog was met with almost immediate success, quickly reaching more than 100,000 page views. Its popularity drew significant media attention and Hannah has appeared on numerous programs including George Stroumboulopoulos’ show on CBC Radio and the Marilyn Denis Show on CTV. She also landed an assignment as the official On The Ground Blogger for the 2013 Juno Awards, where she connected with notable artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Victoria Duffield on ideas to be more eco-friendly in their everyday activities as musicians. Recently, she has embraced public speaking as another channel to share her message. Among the organizations eager to have Hannah connect with their audiences are Free The Children and Me to We—both founded by Thornhill brothers and activists Marc and Craig Kielburger. Looking ahead in 2014, Hannah has her sights set on a Me to We volunteer trip to Kenya. “I’ve heard a lot about it from people I’ve met at We Day (an educational event that aims to inspire to youth to lead local and global change),” she said. “I’d like to go and see the impact first hand.”

“But just remember that little things add up to make a big difference—and you’re never too young to change the world.”

She is also branching out into other areas of interests such as bullying and the negative impacts of child labour. “She’s a young girl who’s compassionate and interested in what’s going on in the world around her,” Mrs. Alper says. “Hannah’s desire or ability to connect to people, whether that’s through sharing on her blog or from speaking on the We Day stage or various events, with such grace, poise and confidence is something I’m so proud of.” When asked to identify one of her most memorable experiences, Hannah was quick to reference a meeting with former American vice-president Al Gore at the Environmental Defence Fund’s Stop Coal Production press conference last November. “It was really fun and I was so honoured to meet him,” she says. Through her efforts, Hannah has had the opportunity to connect with and learn from a number of other well-known activists, including Martin Luther King III and Martin Sheen. While she enjoys meeting these highprofile people, she is also very interested in connecting with her own peers. As a proud holder of a brown belt, Hannah enjoys interacting with her friends during her karate classes and also at school, where

she lists reading as her favourite activity. Given the success of her efforts, the Richmond Hill blogger was asked what advice she would have for other young kids looking to make a contribution to their community and beyond. “First you have to find out what you’re passionate about,” she replied. “When you find your passion, you could write a blog or you can do public speaking to reach out to people. “But just remember that little things add up to make a big difference—and you’re never too young to change the world.”

Hannah Alper on … favourite food: pepperoni pizza; it’s so yummy.

… one word to best describe herself: passionate.

… favourite band: Hedley—because their songs are positive.

I

can still remember my first time. The tight pants, the beads of sweat forming in places that seemed to defy the laws of gravity and the quiet groans from the dozen or so participants who joined me in the experience. When it was all over and I had no energy left, all I could think about was doing it again.

I’m talking about hot yoga, which has become an increasingly popular way to improve strength, flexibility, general fitness and mental focus. In recent years, York Region has seen more than a handful of hot yoga studios open up, each with its own unique twist on this ancient health practice. One local “yoga mogul”, who started

with a small studio on Centre Street in Thornhill, has turned his single location into the popular Yoga Tree chain we know today (yogatree.ca). Now with five locations and a sixth one on the way, Jason Lu and his partner Debbie Fung have seen the popularity of hot yoga grow in York Region over the last few years.

Beginner’s guide Bring a beach-sized towel, bottle of water and yoga mat to class. You can also rent or purchase those items at the studio. Women who are pregnant or anyone with heart disease should consult their physician before doing hot yoga and it is also not recommended for children. Start with the Level 1/gentle classes and work your way up when you feel ready. At any time during the hot yoga classes if you feel fatigue, the instructor welcomes you to take a break on your mat.

Jason Lu and Debbie Fung of Yoga Tree

“Hot yoga is done in a room which is heated between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. It started with Bikram [yoga] back in the early 1970s and the theory behind the heat is to try and mimic the climate of India, where yoga was first conceived, says Mr. Lu, who offers hot yoga at all his studios. He goes on to explain hot yoga has a long list of benefits that include a better cardiovascular workout. This workout “lubricates joints, strengthens the heart, promotes the cleansing of the pores through sweating and detoxing and helps move the lymphatic system (which plays a crucial role in the immune system, defending the body against infection and disease), he says.

Mr. Lu and Ms Fung recently opened an 8,000-square-foot facility in Vaughan and have plans to expand in Markham and Aurora in the future. Another hot yoga entrepreneur who is also sweating from the influx of business is Melissa Williams, owner/operator of Ananda Hot Yoga (anandayogastudios.com). With locations in Aurora, Bradford and Georgina, Ms Williams has been touting the practice’s benefits since she first opened the doors in 2009. “Hot yoga is an amazing stress reliever, she says. “The heat helps you warm up your muscles so that you can reach the full expressions of poses much more easily

without injuring yourself. She explains yoga provides benefits beyond the physical; it is designed to connect the body, mind and spirit. “They are purifying and energizing classes, she says. “Leaving the class, you are feeling ready to face any challenges in your day. Regardless of which hot yoga studio you choose, it’s clear that this ancient practice continues to benefit people of any age and skill level—and you don’t need to fly to India to experience it. In fact, it’s a wonderful way to get out of the cold and pretend like you are in a warm climate, if only for an hour and a half.

Jennifer eTTinger

spring 2014

Every year for the past 39 years, Lake Superior State University in Michigan has released a report on words that should be banned from use. Words such as twerk, selfie and bucket list made the list for 2014, but not the word busy. I am on a personal mission to ban the word. According to Webster’s Dictionary, busy can mean: engaged in action; being in use (i.e. found the telephone busy); full of activity/bustling (i.e. a busy seaport); foolishly or intrusively active/meddling; or

of distracting detail (i.e. a busy design). I engaged my social media friends in a conversation to gain their insights and views of the word to help formulate this article. In my opinion, and considering their thoughts as well, the word busy has ego attached. We ask “How are you?” And the automatic response is “I’m so busy.” Or we are told, “You must be so busy.” I have changed my response to such inquiries to “I am living abundantly.” Or “I’m active in my business goals at the moment.”

There is a distinct difference between being productive—doing or achieving a lot; working hard and getting good results— and being busy. We can fill our days with busyness, running from one appointment to another. However, many of us in this rat race never taste “dolce la vita,” the sweetness of life. If this sounds familiar, consider asking yourself a few questions: With all the running around I’m doing, am I feeling fulfilled? Am I actually making strides in my goals? Am I ignoring the bigger issues in my life so I do not have to address the issue(s) that need resolution?

“To me, time is priceless. It is worth more to me than money.” I wonder if our use of busy comes from a lack of self-confidence and a need to compete. We are placing pressures on ourselves and our friends to do more, to “outshine”—without recognizing all our accomplishments and celebrating the good things in our lives. To me, that is so sad. Certainly, there will be times in our lives when we will find ourselves burning the midnight oil to achieve certain goals and deadlines placed before us. But that should be a temporary condition. Why is self-care so spoken about, yet so unpractised and uncool? When we slow down, we are able to see clearly, relax the mind and body and feel more in control. Taking time to recharge and quiet the mind will have a profound physiological effect on your body and your spirit. Now, I have to be honest, I live an abundant life. People say to me, “Jennifer, you are always on the go.” Here is how I respond to that statement: “I was bedridden, robbed of health, staring at the ceiling for one year of my life. I was numb in spirit and weak in strength. I’m making up for lost time.” To me, time is priceless. It is worth more to me than money. Initially, I succumbed to busy, cramming in as much as time and sanity would allow. But, over the course of time, I started to have disdain for the act of busy. As I age and move forward in life, I realize that none of the above matters. I don’t always need to have the “next big thing.” What matters is the time spent with loved ones and time actively focused on working to reach your dreams. Menka Kostoff, owner and stylist at Salon on Seven. The family-run business has been a Unionville fixture for 30 years, operating as Liz n Paul’s Hair Design on Fred Varley Drive, until the move to Hwy. 7 last year.

The Schwarzkopf colour system maintains the integrity of the hair and keeps the colour looking fresh until the next touch-up. Small colour molecules penetrate into the hair shaft with no damage to the hair and replace all lost keratin and moisture in the hair. “Your hair is in better condition after colouring and maintains the shine and lustre for weeks,” Menka says.

The cut: Long layers with an elongated bob. “I chose to cut a full fringe bang, to frame Carrie’s face and accent her gorgeous eye colour,” Menka says. “This style works well with wavy hair, as it will be easy to maintain at home.”

Make-up: Menka accented Carrie’s eye shape with mocha and sandalwood beige eye shadow and dark liner on the top lid only. Applying BB cream all over evened out her complexion and a light dusting of bronzing powder gives her skin a nice glow with out the shine. Lip colour is a pale shade with gloss and liner for lasting colour.

The result: Light and bright for spring.

If you are contemplating colour but are worried about the commitment, add some foil highlights instead of a full colour so it will blend in easily with the new growth.

Card and SILVERSEA

I boarded the Silver Spirit in Venice and disembarked in Athens. From check-in to checkout, I wasn’t disappointed. I have been on a lot of cruises in my lifetime. It is the fastest growing travel sector in the world, with more than 20 million passengers taking a cruise in 2012. One of the safest ways to travel, cruising offers something for everyone, regardless of budget. Whether you want exotic travel to Antarctica or a family getaway to the Florida Keys, cruising options are endless. I have sailed on some of the best and some of the worst cruise lines in the world. When I was presented with an invitation to travel through the Mediterranean on Silversea’s newest ship, the Silver Spirit, I could barely control my excitement. Silversea is the premiere luxury cruise line in the world. The company’s fleet is comprised of five ultra-luxury ships, Silver Wind, Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper and Silver Spirit, and two luxurious expedition ships, Silver Explorer and Silver Galapagos. The classic fleet sails worldwide while Silver Explorer explores the polar regions and Silver Galapagos, the waterways around the Galapagos Islands.

Silversea offers intimate, elegant ships with extraordinary space per guest ratio, exceptional service with nearly one crew member for every guest, butler service for all guests on all ships, alternative dining options in multiple venues and sophisticated entertainment from live music to full-production shows. Silversea is a cruise line I had always heard about, but had never had the opportunity to experience. As with any trip, you have to choose a destination based on what you want out of the experience. Choosing a cruise line is no different. You need to decide where you want to go and what you want out of the ship itself. Throughout the year Silversea cruise ships sail to the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexico, French Polynesia, Kiribati, all major islands in Hawaii and the Mediterranean. Near the end of the year, Silver Spirit arrives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for a series of round-trip Caribbean cruises culminating in a luxurious 14-day holiday cruise. spring 2014

I boarded the Silver Spirit in Venice and disembarked in Athens. From check-in to checkout, I wasn’t disappointed. Silver Spirit was launched in December 2009 and is the newest vessel in the Silversea family. Silver Spirit offers the distinctive luxuries and celebrated lifestyle Silversea guests adore, plus enticing enhancements including an Asian-themed restaurant, expansive spa,a resort-style pool, four whirlpools and the largest suites in the Silversea fleet—95 per cent with private verandas. One of the things I love about cruising is the schedule. You can unpack your bags and stay in one place, while the ship takes you to a different destination daily. Guests get to experience a variety of ports in the span of one trip, while staying, in the case of the Silver Spirit, on a floating five-star hotel.

spring 2014

On this trip, to the Greek Isles, I took advantage of exploring the ship by staying onboard in the ports I had already visited. All suites on the ship are magnificent and offer butler service, a refrigerator and bar stocked with your preferences, European bath amenities, down duvets, fine bed linens, premium mattresses, your choice of pillow, spa robes and slippers, personalized stationery, binoculars, umbrella, daily news summary and WiFi access. The ship also boasts a card room, with bridge games and tournaments taking place daily, a casino offering roulette, blackjack and slot machines, a library with an extensive selection of hardcovers, magazines and newspapers and a show lounge offering everything from full-scale productions to feature films. You will never be bored on the Silver Spirit.

TOP: Deep-sea fishing boat in Nafplion, Greece BOTTOM: Scenes from Kotor, Montenegro

If it is relaxation you are after, the ship offers a pool deck, panorama deck, observation lounge, beauty salon and spa. Although I had been to many of the ports before, my experience aboard the Silver Spirit did not disappoint. If you are looking for a high-end getaway, Silversea is definitely the way to go. During this trip I tested some luggage by TRS Ballistic (trsballistic.com) and have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the design—unique and compact. I tend to over pack but managed to fit everything into the one case. The packing modules in three different sizes made for easy separation of items and efficient use of space. I also used a second bag, attached with the company’s train reaction system that allows travellers to link up to three bags together. This is certainly luggage I would invest in and add to…maybe next Christmas. For more information on the Silversea Cruise Line, visit silversea.com.
