New van needed for residents By Laura Brodina
Director of Resource Development
G
ood Samaritan Society – Park River is proud to offer transportation services to our residents. It provides peace of mind for family members and makes sure residents can attend appointments outside the center, while continuing to receive a superior level of care. As a not-for-profit organization, we use any extra income after expenses for the purpose of center operations. That means there are no extra funds for purchasing a much-needed new van. The center needs a new van because the current van has high miles and needs an updated mechanical wheelchair lift.
Simply put, we need your help. We rely on friends and donors who believe in our mission and offer financial support to help our residents feel more loved and valued in a place they are proud to call home. Please consider donating toward the purchase of a new wheelchair-accessible van at Good Samaritan Society – Park River. All gifts are tax-deductible within IRS regulations. You may designate your gift in honor or in memory of a loved one, and 100 percent of every donation goes to the project of your choice. For more information about the van, or how your gifts make a difference in the lives of our residents, please call me at (701) 284-7115. ✞

Remember loved ones during the holidays By Joan Olson
A
s the holiday season nears, families and friends are encouraged to remember residents at Good Samaritan Society – Park River. It can be difficult for residents to be away from loved ones, so letters and visits are especially important. Simple gestures can make a big difference to a resident’s mood and well-being. Here are a few suggestions for remembering a loved one during the holidays. Make a visit. Visitors are always welcome. Many residents like to talk or look at photographs that visitors bring. Write a letter. A personal note can brighten a resident’s day. Take a few minutes to jot a note to a resident about how his or her influence is appreciated. Bring a special treat. Residents like it when visitors bring small treats — a few Christmas cookies, fruitcake or anything else a resident may like. Check with

a nurse or the dietitian about dietary restrictions that a resident may have. Eat a meal together. Guests are welcome to eat with residents for both regular and holiday meals. Please let staff members know about meal plans 24 hours in advance. Help spread the cheer. Offer to address envelopes for holiday cards, wrap gifts, hang ornaments, decorate cookies, lead a singalong of Christmas carols, or assist at a holiday celebration at the center. Take a resident for an outing. Family members and friends may invite residents to their homes for the holidays. Be sure to sign out the resident at the nursing station when the resident leaves the center. Efforts from family members and friends can make all the difference to a resident. Thank you for including residents in celebrations during the holidays and throughout the year. ✞

V olunteering is a year-round gift V
olunteers at Good Samaritan Society – Park River give priceless gifts to the residents they serve: helping hands, loving hearts and companionship. By becoming involved in the lives of others, volunteers share the love of God and receive more in return than they might ever have expected. Residents look forward to sharing their home, their memories and their love with others. Volunteers can schedule to visit the center on a regular basis, or they can visit for a single afternoon.
Whether it’s providing music, assisting with special programs and activities, or helping residents with daily needs, each volunteer helps enhance the lives of residents. There are many opportunities for volunteers to share their time and talents with residents, and people of any age can become volunteers. For more information about volunteer opportunities at the center, please call Monica Simon at (701) 284-7115 or fill out the volunteer form on the center’s Web site at www.good-sam.com. ✞
