1. Can you tell us about your journey into the world of poetry and R&B music? What inspired you to pursue these art forms? Thanks for having me. My name is Kendrick, I have feelings and a very vivid imagination. Have you ever observed the quiet child that seemed hella shy but hella observant? Like, very quiet but attuned. That was me, and because I wasn’t outwardly expressive I came to use the art as my expression. It started with journaling to process thoughts and feelings I had inside but didn’t feel like I had the confidence or understanding of how to express them outwardly. In my later years, I’ve come to understand these expressions through a lens of emotional intelligence. Which is why this artistic journey has been so pivotal for my life. I’m a social worker by training but I love personal growth, psychology, neuroscience
and healing just as much as I love the arts, so music and poetry allows for me to bring all these dynamics together.
2. Who are some of your biggest influences in poetry and R&B? How have they shaped your style? I believe the artistic journey is composed of Paul L. Dunbar, who was the first poet I was introduced to. That was the name of the first elementary school that I went to and for some reason that always resonated with me once I looked up who he was. I grew up in church so Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, the Clark Sisters and just the gospel experience. I grew up in Dallas, and the radio stations had such a range. Rnb, and classic soul is where I initially started listening. I can’t remember exactly when, but I recall listening to the oldies station and hearing the same music that was on the more current music station, so I got curi-
ous about finding out what songs were samples or remakes of older music. I say all that to say, that soul and Rnb hit me first and then hip hop. Outkast, UGK, Scarface are at the very top of my hip hop list along with alot of classic Neo Soul. Jill Scott Eryka Badu, Soul Aquarians. Raphael Saadiq. But also jazz, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. Currently, PJ Morton is at the top of the list, Emily King, but overall, I love discovering new music. I like exploring other sounds from time to time. One Republic is a fave as well. I can’t do this list justice cause it’s just so much.
3. Do you remember the first poem or song you ever wrote? What was it about? The first poem I really recall that stands out, was when I was in the 9th grade. I wrote a poem called Fugitive of My Sorrow. My father passed away when I was 12 yrs old. And that poem was about that loss. I did it for an assignment in my English class and my instructor Mr. Payne was really impacted by it. And he made me feel like something was there. Ironically, the first poem that I actually wrote and performed was for a talent show when I was in the 11th grade. And I don’t know where I even got the idea to write this poem because Lord knows I didn’t have any experience to write it, lol. I don’t remember the name of the poem but the first line was something like, “I wanna be your gigolo”, now clearly I heard it in a comedy movie or something, I couldn’t have told you exactly what a gigolo was at the time. It was really just a love poem with misguided verbiage, lol. I wish I had it. I remember when I did it, I had a whole costume on, like a coat and a hat.
4. How does your background and personal experiences influence your music and poetry? Poetry has always been
more of a healing space for me, so it typically has always been about what I’ve been experiencing. As a social worker, the themes of social justice and healing are some themes that often come up. I think love songs have been very simplified and over sexualized. There are so many examples of love, friendship and connection that we don’t normally hear songs about so I like to explore different dynamics.
5. Can you walk us through your creative process when writing a poem versus composing a song? How do the two processes differ? When I’m writing, the process can be a myriad of things. I might start with some music. I could just start with a feeling or a situation I might just want/need to process. I then might start listening to some music to usher in the energy. When it comes to composing, I normally start by searching for a sample or creating a melody and then it from there. I try not to take too much time because I don’t believe it needs to be that complicated but I do have those moments where I take a week, a month, or even years to complete a piece, so I often let the piece dictate the journey as well. But I also love collaboration and seeing what others bring to the table and having that speak to the space.
6. Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics and poetry? Are there any specific themes you find yourself returning to? I find inspiration in all things. Conversations, life, memes, phrases, jokes, movies, other music, nature. It could be love, family, social dynamics. I really tend to lean into whatever is most present for me at the moment. Music is vibrations and I’m also mindful of the messages so I use the music as medicine. What are the messages or things I need to hear
to encourage me or others? I wrote a piece about grief and letting go, I wrote an affirmation on this new project called TMF which stands for, well you’ll just have to hear it. But it’s a song that is essentially a groovy affirmation. Sometimes I’m processing experiences or even trying to figure things out, and I know I’m not the only one experiencing things so I don’t mind sharing these experiences but I’ll just make stuff for me with no intent to release.
7. Do you have any rituals or routines that help you get into the creative zone? The way I tend to lean into is just marinating on what I’m working on. I actually would play the music and sleep with in it on through out the night. My daughter useto hate that, lol. Or even after I’ve laid a scratch vocal, I like to right around with it to see if feels right. For me, it tends to be a intuitive experience of does it feel right. So it’s been a journey of learning to listen to myself, or to whoever I’m co-creating with.
8. How do you balance the emotional depth of poetry with the musicality of R&B in your work? Ooohhh Wow!! I love this question.. You must really like music. I’ve actually been writing about men, emotions and emotional expressiveness from the When Black Men Speak campaign I recently did. The exploration was about how men are socialized to express emotions differently than women, but also expected
to communicate them in the same way women do. Which is a disservice in and of itself. So when you ask about the emotional depth of poetry, I’m thinking about the musicality of the poetry. And when I’m thinking of the musicality of R&B, I’m also thinking about the emotionality of R&B. R&B is typically based around the emotion of love. R&B stands for Rhythm and Blues. The blues is connected to gospel so they are automatically anchored in deep emotional expression, and the beauty of R&B, is that it is coupled with musicality and emotion. That’s what makes it so impactful. So for me the music is a background for the poetry and they are very much aligned. And as I mentioned before, I create from the emotion because emotions are timeless.
9. How has your work evolved since you first started? Are there any significant changes or growth in your style? I’m not sure my work has evolved as much as I have just grown. I believe that I’m musically more learned and mature. My ear for production has gotten better and that definitely has impacted the type and sound of music as well as my peers that I collaborate with. On the previous projects, I was very honed in on the live instrumentation aspect of the production but now as a producer I’m open to more sounds. But that’s also just me growing as a person and artist and so I’m willing to
try different things and I can get bored easily so sometimes I want to try new things to keep it fresh for me.
10. What has been the most challenging aspect of merging poetry with R&B music? The most challenging part was expecting others to understand. I remember going to a music conference about 8-10 years ago and I let this guy check out some of my music on one of those music feedback sessions and he just didn’t get it. I also had a poet friend that told me when I started out, they didn’t get it. They kinda just felt like it should have been just straight poetry or just music. I happened to run into them last year and they told me they get it now.
11. Can you tell us about a particular project or piece that you’re especially proud of? What makes it stand out for you? The album I’m about to release is something that I’m really really proud of. I think it is a great reflection of me and where I am at this stage in my life. I like the range of sounds, subject matter, the artists, the musicians I connected with. The name of this project is Clean Pain and Resmaa Menaken states Clean Pain is the healthy form of healing where we actually seek to address issues, develop healthy coping skills. In contrast to dirty pain, which is the more maladaptive coping skills like, drinking, smoking, numbing the pain, sexing, all the things that don’t address the trauma or issue. So this album is my expression of clean pain which has been my journey over the last 10 years, since my divorce. There are alot of voices, a lot of collaborations, so perspectives and expressions we don’t always hear, so I’m excited to share it. I got to collaborate with some of my favorite artists, musicians and friends.
12. How do you feel about the current state of R&B and poetry? Are there any trends you find exciting or concerning? I appreciate when I hear originality but also work. When I say work I mean, effort in the context of trying different things, having a layered experience in the song writing, the musicality. Everyone’s work is not for everyone, and that’s fine. But I can appreciate artists that at least seem to take some time to be critical and creative with their work. If I’m honest, I can’t say I pay a whole lot of attention to trends. I feel dated to a degree in my appreciation of classic or timeless expressions. I don’t like that people will say that there is no good soul music, R&B or Hip Hop because there are tons of artists, we just have to look for, so I hate that a lot of the art that seeks to speak to the soul of a person doesn’t get highlighted as much. And don’t get me wrong, I love having fun, I even think the genius of artists is being able to create the messages we need, with fun, with a range of emotions, grooves, tones, textures and voices.
13. How do you engage with your audience? What kind of feedback or interaction do you find most meaningful? So when it comes to in person engagement, I love a deep meaningful, exploratory conversation of learning or just genuine
laughter. At shows or when giving trainings, it’s kinda similar but I can also hide behind the mic because I’m a poet,I already write a lot of what I’m feeling in the pieces/songs. I’m horrible when it comes to social media, so I could stand to develop that space a bit more. But I had how so much gets lost in that realm. Any social media folks, feel free to hit me up.
14. What upcoming projects or collaborations are you excited about? I’m getting ready to drop an album called Clean Pain. I have an EP called (When Black Men Speak) in relation to the artist grant I received last year that I’m also working on and that will also include a book entitled When Black Men Speak of Clean Pain. Those are the main things I’m working on.
15. What message do you hope to convey through your work, and what impact do you hope to have on your listeners and readers? I love people and seeing people grow. There’s a depth to the human experience and I just like to speak to all those dynamics. I create from the space of ultimately wanting the best for people and wanting to see them grow. I realize my work can be a lot to take in. There’s a part of me that tries to make it palatable while poignant but the essence is work that speaks to me about my journey, my growth, lessons and even desires and hopefully others can resonate with that as well.
16. If you could collaborate with any artist, poet, or musician (past or present), who would it be and why? Raphael Saddiq, Kirk Franklin, PJ Morton, Emily King, Outkast, Quincy Jones, Killer Mike, Eryn Allen Kane, Tank and the Bangas & E. Badu. You probably just wanted one person but all these artists lean into the artistry, their songwriting, musicality. They have range and depth and that’s how i love to explore.
17. How do you unwind and relax when you’re not writing or performing? I love movies, books, basketball, cooking while listening to music and being by the water and live music. So going to or being able to participate in any of these are very much ideal ways I get to chill and relax.
18. What advice would you give to aspiring poets and musicians trying to break into the industry? Remember there is spirit connected to your artistic gift but it is also a skill to be continuously developed. I would say to develop yourself and who you are as a person, because it will guide you to your ideal direction. Know that you are a business and approach it as such. Develop a plan, build connections that are also good relationships, work on your craft and remember to have fun and surround yourself with good people that help you grow.

Everyone’s favorite British stop-motion duo is back in their first outing since 2008. It’s also
their first feature film since 2005’s Curse of the Were-Rabbit. This movie marks the return of Feathers McGraw, an evil penguin from The Wrong Trousers short who is here to get revenge! If you love animation or grew up with Wallace and Gromit, you won’t want to miss this. It premieres on BBC on Christmas 2024, with a Netflix release slated for January 3, 2025.
Sonic’s run on the silver screen has been quite successful, with many old and new fans eager for the third installment. The third movie debuts Shadow the Hedgehog, played by Keanu
Reeves. Also, Jim Carrey is back as Dr. Robotnik. It’s only in theaters on December 20, 2024.
Robert Zemeckis, director of the Back to the Future films Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Forrest Gump, has a new movie starring Tom Hanks. This film is about multiple generations occupying a single piece of land and all the memories they share with it. It may be a film to warm up a cold day. It premieres in theaters on November 1, 2024.
If you want a chilly romance, Hot Frosty may be for you. It’s about a widow who brings a snowman to life, and he takes the form of an attractive man. However, he may soon melt if she doesn’t find a way to keep things cool. It premieres on Netflix on November 13, 204.
If you enjoy suspenseful horror, Heretic may be a unique offering. Hugh Grant plays Mr. Reed, who locks up two Mormon missionaries after they show up at his home. The film will premiere in theaters on November 8, 2024.
If you love a mystery thriller, Prime Target may be for you. It stars a post-graduate math student whose work is threatened. His work centers around finding a pattern in prime numbers that would give him access to every single computer in the world. If you like mysteries, thrills, and science, this may be for you. The first two episodes will premiere on January 22, 2025, on Apple TV Plus.
Gladiator II is the sequel to the 2000 film starring Russel Crowe as Maximus and fittingly takes place 20 years after the first. This film is centered around Lucius, the son of Maximus, who fights as a gladiator after being forced into slavery. While Russel Crowe is not expected to reprise his role as Maximus, director Ridley Scott has returned. See the epic
clash when it hits theaters on November 22, 2024.
The 2020s have seen a revival of the Showtime series Dexter after it initially ended in 2013. The first was the sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, which premiered in 2021. In 2025, a sequel to New Blood, Dexter: Resurrection, is to premiere. Between these two revivals is Original Sin, a prequel starring a 20-year-old Dexter Morgan. Patrick Gibson plays the younger version of everyone’s favorite ethical serial killer, but Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter’s inner voice.
Wicked has been a popular Broadway show since 2003, and now it’s getting a film adaptation. It’s a musical starring the two witches in the land of Oz. At 2 hours and 40 minutes, it’s going to be a long journey, and it’s only the first part. Relive the musical when it hits theaters on November 22, 2024.
The sequel to Disney’s 2016 film Moana 2 continues the journey of the titular character as she sets sail to an ancient island. Dwayne Johnson also reprises his role as Maui. Both kids and Disney adults alike can set sail when it hits theaters on November 27, 2024.
If you can’t get enough of the MCU, Kraven the Hunter may satisfy. This film stars the titular Kraven, a villain in the Spider-Man comics. It’s rated R, so this is an adventure that your kids may not want to see. It hits theaters on December 13, 2024.
If you’re a fan of folk rock legend Bob Dylan, check out this biopic. It’s directed by James Mangold, who directed the acclaimed Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line in 2005. The biopic stars Timothée Chalamet, who plays Dylan during his rise in the 1960s. It focuses on his then-controversial decision to switch from acoustic to electric instruments.
From the beginning, it is a test.
To become Mikubwa, one must live as Mikubwa, move as Mikubwa, dress as a Mikubwa. As with all things for the adumfoo (‘apprentice’ in your tongue, ‘learning warrior’ for us), these must be earned. Our culture places very little value on things given to warriors.
This morning marks the third day of our training. We adumfoo who have earned knives have arrived at the Bugay Wood together but must venture forth alone. The Mikubwa sometimes support one another in the field but this is not that. Here, we are individually evaluated on every skill and deficiency.
Only one of those is acceptable for the Mikubwa.
I am called Ohemaa. In our native Asante Twi that means Queen. For me, it is not as empowering a moniker as it should be. That is a… sad story for much later.
The great Queen Ramla is both the sovereign ruler of Nkrumah (you know it as the Republic of Ghana) and the ruthlessly fearless leader of the dangerous Mikubwa. That she is my mother purchases no comfort for me. No one in this cycle is allowed to call me Princess. That, too, is a thing that must be earned.
We are Zulu. Our Nkrumah home lies in the greatest nation known to man. The entire continent you call Africa is but one nation, Alkebulan, and the Zulu is the largest living empire in our Earth’s history. The only power equal to our technology is our unity: there is no unemployment in Alkebulan. None.
The Alkebulan role for Nkrumayans? Our nation boasts of a great many contributions, but the Mikubwa represents all that we are. As one of many powerful warrior
tribes in Alkebulan, ours is an amalgam of direct and indirect means.
The Mikubwa exists to execute. Simply.
We live by the credo, “Fail at nothing, what is left is Mikubwa”. The expectation is absolute, there is no room for mistakes. This ideology rules our current education.
My adumfoo sisters and I are to remain alone in the Bugay Wood until we return with leopard pelt. This is the warrior garment the Mikubwa wear. Without it, we are never to return to our training camp. This is not to say we must die in the Wood, but the Mikubwa distinction would never be ours. That is a fate worse than death for the Nkrumayan warrior.
Conversely, there is an extremely high premium for being ranked the first adumfoo. This is no easy feat, the competition is exceptional. It is our culture to be groomed as woman warriors beginning our sixth Sun revolution. My training began at three.
When we begin this school at seventeen, there is terrific demand on our skill level. Every adumfoo strives to exceed our contemporaries as the Umbusi – the dominator. It is the distinguished honor of being the first ranked. This title is presently mine and I gladly risk my life to keep it. This mentality is prerequisite to becoming Mikubwa.
My tests resume as I deeply penetrate the Wood. The enchanting romance of this harrowing jungle could fool the simple to ignore her dangers. I am not afforded such misgivings. Zulu technology is such that each of our maneuvers can be tracked and recorded, no matter where we travel. This is how our performance is assessed and how
we are certain to be recovered if failure claims our lives. It is a high possibility.
Everything that my eyes behold in the Wood lives. Lush foliage both colorfully pronounce their potent poisons while concealing hosts of furry, fanged and armored inhabitants. The staunch trees sprawl their mighty roots across the floor, an anchoring which allows their towering caress of the heavens. Within their canopy lurks both beasts and fowl who would enthusiastically consume me to survive. An assortment of vines rain from the sky in droves but still fail to absorb the ceaseless symphony of wild calls, crunching bones and animal song. The heightened natural activity beckons the wise to maximize their senses. It is time to earn more assets. Scouring the Wood, I locate a trove of bamboo stalks. I cleave the straightest slim one then hollow its center with a, likewise, unbent stick. Afterwards I separate the stick into three pieces then shave them into highly sharpened spikes. This becomes my first projectile weapon.
I immediately begin searching for any small animal tracks which can be found. A faint fox trail runs into itself after several dozen feet. I conceal myself, perched in a tree just above the fox tracks intersection.
Moments later, giant doka and macroptera leaves begin to slowly and methodically lift in a path heading my direction. These leaves are being displaced by a large, seemingly singular body, patiently plodding through the brush. I assess this is a hunter, stalking the same prey that I await.
My eyes widen at what appears directly beneath me. It is immediately clear that I am unprepared.

While some people are still experiencing days when it’s 80 degrees outside, it is fall and we’ll be having winter after that. Naturally, there’s still activities to do outside, but, sometimes, you just want to stay in. Having music to listen to while you relax with a nice warm drink under a warm blanket is a great feeling and we’ve got six picks for you that we think you’ll enjoy. You may or may not be familiar with these artists already but once you hear their
music, you’ll easily get acquainted.
We hope our choices give you something new to use to get through the fall and winter months. Maybe you’ve even discovered someone who’s now become one of your favorite artists through our recs. We hope these songs provide the relaxation we all need as the year winds down and we also hope you find success in all that you pursue in these last few weeks of the year.
JAZZ IT UP
Mid Spiral by BADBADNOTGOOD is for the jazz lovers. This project captures a myriad of wonderful sounds. With multiple collaborators bringing all sorts of vibes and atmospheres to the tracks, there’s not a single boring moment on the project. Guitars, keyboards, drums and sounds that aren’t immediately recognizable come together to create relaxing yet upbeat tracks that are sometimes danceable and sometimes prompt you to sit and just reflect. The jazz continues in a different direction on Portrait by Samara Joy. You may recognize her as the 2023 Grammy winner for Best New Artist. Samara’s warm yet strong vocals will transport you to the days of jazz clubs and tuxedos as her backing band plays piano and horn laden tracks that feel like sophivsticated party music. Her songs often discuss love through a poetic lens that make it sound like the most wonderful feeling in the world.
Victoria Monét’s JAGUAR II Deluxe is one of those deluxe editions that are actually worth checking out. Not only is it practically just as long as the original but the sonic palette of the original continues on it too. These soulful groovy R&B tracks are just as sonically dynamic as the songs on the original album. Victoria even pays homage to some legends by covering Sade’s “Love Is Stronger Than Pride” and interloping Michael Jackson and Anita Baker in “1900s.” The Heart, The Mind, The Soul by Tank and the Bangas is a journey through raps, spoken word and singing backed by smooth mystical jazz and R&B based production. Mind warping melodies provide the backbone for affirmations of self-empowerment and reflection on relationships from Tank and her guest vocalists. This one will resonate with many people on a lyrical level.
The Drive Home by Samara Cyn is a rap project filled with sung vocal arrangements. Samara handles both as she tells of the life she’s lived so far over production that sits right in the chill lane. Her vulnerability and relatability come through in her songwriting as her unique vocal tone may remind listeners of a certain pop star turned rapper. A splash of indie R&B and soul fuse with hip-hop drums throughout the project create an atmosphere that’s perfect for staying inside. Tracks like “KO” “100sqft” and “Chrome” have a cold tone to them that fits the winter excellently while the rest of the project sounds right at home in the fall. Meanwhile, the cold tones of rap are all over Across The Tracks by Boldy James and Conductor Williams. Boldly’s monotone delivery and direct flows blend well with soulful and dreary samples from Conductor. His tales of life in the streets are told through a lens that doesn’t glorify them but rather reflects and recaps them. Boldy paints chilling yet realistic images in the listener’s minds with his words with ease.
