You don't have to brave the crowds and the chill at Rockefeller Plaza to enjoy a joyous and festive Christmas tree lighting, as the communities of Long Island are second to none in organizing these holiday-themed events. Coming up: A holiday tree lighting with a fireworks display as a grand finale will be December 6 at Belmont Lake State Park (Southern State Parkway exit 38) in North Babylon. Admission is free. Attractions include a visit from Santa Claus, holiday music from the North Babylon School District, figurine displays, carolers, ice sculptures, and more. Organizers request those attending bring canned food to be donated to Long Island families in need. New Games To Play In Dix Hills
Classic traditional board games are always a great leisure pastime (though they do evolve; we recently spotted a “Big Bang Theory” edition of Clue in a local store). New games and their history will be featured at “Board Games: The Next Generation” on Saturday, December 6 at 2 pm at Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills. Long Island Boardgaming Organization (LIBO) founder Chris Palermo will introduce new table-top games such as

A Showbiz Legend: Judy Garland Event In Stony Brook
A unique entertainment event, “At Home With Judy Garland,” is making news at Stony Brook Village Center. This event is acelebration of “Hollywood's Golden Era stage,” and in particular the film actress, dancer, singer, and entertainment legend Judy Garland. Those attending can hear some of the pop music hits from early in her career, including "Over The Rainbow" from The Wizard Of Oz, which was ranked as the number one movie song of all time. These events are high-tea luncheon performances in a decorated seasonal setting, featuring finger sandwiches and desserts.

A Long Island Railroad Anniversary Event
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Long Island Railroad's famous G-16 train during the weekend of December 13 and 14 from 10 am to 4 pm at The Railroad Museum of Long Island in Riverhead. Information: (631) 727-7920, or log on to rmli.org. The LIRR's G-16 is also known as “New York World Fair's Park Train,” as it was famous there during the legendary event. Also taking place during this weekend at the same venue: An open house with Santa Claus. The G16 train was built by the Alan Herschel Company and delivered to the LIRR exhibit at the New York World's Fair in March 1964. After being part of the LIRR exhibit at the 1964-65 World's Fair, the train went to the Grumman Aerospace Corp. Calverton site, where it was shown at the annual Grumman Family Picnic.

s the New York Islanders are leaving for Brooklyn next season, it’s time to look ahead for Long Island and professional sports: There are rumors that the New York Jets will return to Long Island for training camp. The buzz is that they will pass on their old home of Hofstra University in favor of SUNY Farmingdale. The NBA Developmental League has been growing. It has a TV contract with the CBS Sports Network, and more NBA teams are becoming owners of their minor league affiliates. Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corporation created the Westchester Knicks, based in White Plains, who play their home games at the Westchester County Center. The Brooklyn Nets, on the other hand, do not as of yet have an NBA D-League affiliate as the Springfield Armor were moved to Grand Rapids and are now owned by the Detroit Pistons. If the New York Knicks can have a team in Westchester, why shouldn’t the Nets have one in Long Island? Their old home, the Nassau Coliseum, should have a number of open dates next fall. If you are a basketball fan, you may want to visit one of California’s hippest towns, Santa Cruz, which is an hour south of San Francisco, from January 15 thrugh 19, for the NBA Development League‘s showcase where all 18 of its teams will play in a tournament. The following month, the D-League All-Stars will convene at Barclays Center

for a game that will be part of the NBA’s All-Star Weekend in New York City. Russ Cohen has written extensively about hockey over the years, and while he may never get the fame of, say, Stan Fischler, he is well respected in NHL circles. Cohen has a way of writing about hockey that is inclusive of those whose knowledge of the sport is sketchy at best. Cohenhas teamed up with another hockey maven, Adam Raider, for his latest book, 100 Things Rangers Should Know & Do Before They Die (Triumph Books). Of course, there are the expected chapters about the 1994 Stanley Cup; great players as Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Callahan, Adam Graves, and more; colorful head coaches as John Tortorella, Emile Francis, and Mike Keenan; and the “Blueshirts’” battles with their NHL neighbors, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, and the Philadelphia Flyers. What makes this book fun even for non-Rangers fans is that the authors dig deep: 1985”s forgotten head coach, Ted Sato,r gets his due here. The infamous 1970 Long Beach bar brawl between Rangers teammates Ron Stewart and Terry Sawchuk in which Sawchuk lost his life and has always been shrouded in mystery is detailed here. The $35 million facility will make its public debut with the ESPN television finals of seven GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VI events, six of which will be conducted for delayed telecast on ESPN beginning Sunday, December 14. The seventh event will be the live stepladder finals of the PBA World Series of Bowling on Sunday, January 11. The plaza, which was built specifically to host major national and international tournaments, hosted the PBA World Series Of Bowling VII, which will be shown on tape delay in future weeks on ESPN. “It’s a beautiful facility,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “The PBA is proud to be giving the Plaza its first memories with our ESPN-televised events this weekend. PBA history defines bowling and the walls of the Plaza will be echoing with the cheers and excitement we provide. Another Ryka innovation is Ultra Flex technology, which means that its shoes have a lot of give and can bend easily; toes can move comfortably and the heel will avoid blisters. Ryka’s RZX lines feature both Re-Zorb and Ultra Flex. Altra Footwear has also been on the forefront of technology with its Zero Drop line of shoes that feature a wide toe area. Brooks Running’s Adrenaline 15 has been anticipated by many serious runners. Chris Daughtry, the TV-bred pop singer who first scored fame on “American Idol,” has scored as many hits as anyone who has been associated with the program. The creative juices never cease flowing; when the time arrived to make his fourth full-length studio album, Baptized, Daughtry followed his instincts. Motivated by intensely creative writing sessions with the likes of Martin Johnson [Boys Like Girls], Sam Hollander [Gym Class Heroes, Coheed and Cambria] and Claude Kelly [Bruno Mars, Whitney Houston], the singer, songwriter and musician quickly discovered the direction of his latest body of work. “I needed a change,” he admits. “I started hearing these new sounds over my voice, and it was

so inspiring. There wasn’t just one style either. It was a completely different vibe all around. I really wanted to pursue that to the fullest. This is probably one of the most inspiring records I’ve ever done.” In early 2013, Chris began working on what
would eventually become Baptized. Early on, he made a conscious decision to approach the album from a different angle. It would’ve been too easy for him to simply repeat himself considering he and the band have been on quite a hot streak since their 2006 self-titled became the fastest-selling rock debut in Soundscan history. 2009’s Leave This Town gave them their second consecutive #1 on the Billboard Top 200, while Break The Spell reached gold status in merely four weeks of release in 2011. Throughout, they achieved four #1 smashes at radio as well as four Grammy Award nominations and four American Music Awards wins. Meanwhile, sales exceeded eight million albums and 18 million singles. Nevertheless, as an artist, band, they chose to evolve for both themselves and their fans. In between a hectic touring schedule, Chris Daughtry would fly to Los Angeles for in-studio sessions with Johnson and Hollander or Kelly. Obviously, all the hard work would soon pay off. “As fans of the band, they would do things that I normally wouldn’t do, and that’s why it was so exciting,” he said. “I was much more open to explore a new style of writing with this album. Whether it was on keyboard, piano, or even banjo in some cases, the soundscape really felt alive. “

ohn Oliver, who has gone from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to even greater heights as the host of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” makes an appearance at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury on December 12 at 8 pm; make plans early, as this show could very well be sold out to the rafters. His new HBO show, “Last Week Tonight,” debuted earlier this year, presenting a satirical look at the week in news, politics, and current events. Such was its success that Oliver went on to host four seasons of his own stand up series for Comedy Central, “John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show, “ a show featuring a hand-picked selection of his favourite comedians. Guest headliners have included Marc Maron, Hannibal Buress, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Hardwick and Deon Cole. Oliver also continues to successfully tour the U.S. as a standup. He’s also know by many fans for his regular guest role on NBC’s sitcom “Community” and other TV appearances.

Birdman Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Innocence
Starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone Written and directed by Alejandro Inarritu Fox Searchlight
Riggan Thomson (Keaton) is an actor who is facing a dilemma that frequently comes to anyone who played a superhero: The ability to find new work after you’ve completed your run seems to be inversely proportional to the popularity in the role that made you rich. Rather than accept a life of appearing at one entertainment convention after another and making easy money by appearing on panels and autographing glossies, Riggan wants to be relevant and not remembered merely for playing comic book hero Birdman. To accomplish that end, he helps finance a Broadway show in which he’ll star based on Raymond Carver’s short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.” A key reason that this film has generated a lot of advance buzz is because Inarritu has created a sharp satire of the entertainment industry in much the same manner that Robert Altman did years ago with The Player. Keaton played Batman in two films, and while he has always found new parts to play, he has never been the same kind of A-lister that he was 25 years ago. It’s clear that he sympathizes with Riggan’s travails, including hearing the voices of a Birdman alter-ego that urges him to give up this pretentious theater nonsense and put the Birdman suit back on to make big dollar Hollywood sequels.
Keaton is not the only actor here who is playing a part that is close to home. Edward Norton, who has a solid theatrical background, is Riggan’s co-star, Mike Shiner, a self-absorbed method actor who claims that he is only genuine while on stage. Mike’s co-star, Lesley (Watts), is the stereotypical insecure starlet who always winds up in a relationship with guys like Mike. Adding to Riggan’s stress is the fact that his daughter, Samantha (Stone), is just out of drug rehab. He feels guilty that he was never there for her because he always put his career first, so he hires her to be his assistant. Trying to help him cope are his agent-lawyer-best friend Jake (Galifianakis in a rare subdued straight-man role) and ex-wife Sylvia (Amy Ryan).
Inarritu tries to make this film feel like a cinema verite documentary. There is also authenticity as the setting for a good chunk of the film is Broadway’s St. James Theater and the streets surrounding it. There is a lot to like about Birdman, but it’s far from flawless. Too many scenes feel similar watching a class at acting studios, with actors entertaining themselves with the audience being an afterthought. A confrontation with a snooty New York Times theater critic also feels like an actor’s fantasy instead of something that could really happen. Overall, Birdman is a flight worth taking, even if it doesn’t always soar. – Lloyd Carroll

He’s been seen in major film releases, including Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins; The Fighting Temptations; All About the Benjamins; Hancock; The Janky Promoters (with Ice Cube); and Next Day Air (with Mos Def). Epps’ HBO comedy special, Inappropriate Behavior, was one of the network’stop-rated hour-long specials of 2005. When he isn’t filming, Epps travels around the country with his highly successful comedy act, “The Mike Epps After Dark Tour,” which will take a stop here. A native of Indiana who has
steadily climbed his way through the ranks of standup comedy, Epps was first recognized as a talent by a national audience in 1995, when he appeared on the Def Comedy Jam tour and performed on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam” broadcasts. In 2004, he played the comedic relief as a loud-mouthed garbage man in “Roll Bounce,” a film set in the late 1970s about the rollerskating lifestyle which also starred Bow Wow, Chi McBride, and Nick Cannon. Epps went on to play a pivotal role in the Focus Features romantic comedy, “Something New,” starring Sanaa Lathan as a black career woman who unexpectedly finds love with a white working-class man, played by Simon Baker. A bonafide legend could be forgiven for wanting to coast a bit or ride off into the sunset, but that’s not how this narrative goes: Ladies & gentlemen, allow us to re-introduce David Bromberg, the “Godfather of Americana,” and his new album Only Slightly Mad, which was released by Appleseed Recordings. You can tell a lot about a person from the company he keeps. When that company has included Bob Dylan, The Beastie Boys, George Harrison, Emmylou Harris, Doc Watson, John Hiatt, Jerry Garcia, Reverend Gary Davis, Dr. John, Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Mississippi John Hurt, you realize you’re dealing with a very special case. Bromberg was born in Philadelphia in 1945 and

raised in Tarrytown. “As a kid I listened to rock ’n’ roll and whatever else was on the radio,” said Bromberg. “I discovered Pete Seeger and The Weavers and, through them, Reverend Gary Davis. I then discovered Big Bill Broonzy, who led me to Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. This was more or less the same time I discovered Flatt and Scruggs, which led to Bill Monroe and Doc
Watson.” Bromberg’s sensitive and versatile approach to guitar playing earned him jobs playing the Village “basket houses” for tips, the occasional paying gig, and employment as a backing musician for Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. He became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, and Carly Simon. An unexpected and wildly successful solo spot for 600,000 concert goers at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to a solo deal with Columbia Records, for whom
David recorded four albums. His eponymous 1971 debut included “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle George Harrison, who also played slide guitar on the track. In 2013, Bromberg was ready to record again with his live band. Enlisting old friend in producer Larry Campbell and engineer Justin Guip, David and his group entered Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock. Enlisting some of Helm's former recording and touring musicians for added instrumentation, The David Bromberg Band emerged 12 days later with Only Slightly Mad, a return to his genre-bending albums of the 70s and 80s.

Swift’s Premium: The music industry breathes a sigh of relief, as all is well in the kingdom: Someone is still capable of selling more than one million copies of an album in just one week. It comes as no surprise to anyone that the artist is Taylor Swift, who clearly exists in a crossover universe of her own making. She has managed to keep her original country music fans while finally veering totally into a pop star musical mode. Granted, current country sounds more like 80s rock than current rock records sound like rock at all, and it is the country scene that is unleashing the Jason Aldean-type stars who are closer to the ideal of “rock star” than anything that rock has actually given us lately. The idea of a “star,” as I've stated in recent times, is, in itself, in danger of vanishing – at least, what “star” once meant, as social media has

reduced everything into a onesize-fits-all scenario. We are grateful when a story such as the current Swift saga comes along. I'm not a fan – her music is a bit too vanilla for me – but I am happy to see the machine still working when given the opportunity. Recently, it's been old school recording artists who have managed to keep the cogs turning on the sales charts. Hopefully, the remaining record label czars will wake up and pay attention to something other than streaming, as well as blanket deals that nickel and dime everyone to death. Temps & Tops Don’t Stop: A special holiday gala is hitting New York City as you read these words: The Temptations and The Four Tops will co-headline a series of shows on Broadway at The Palace Theater – an iconic stage, indeed. While there is only one original surviving member in each of the two groups, neither of whom were lead singers, this will still rock the rafters in the big town. I am thrilled to see what Broadway's The Temptations
Motown musical has done to revitalize the label's stars. Stevie Wonder has sold out Madison Square Garden, Smokey Robinson is headlining the Barclays Center, the neverending world tour that Diana Ross is on, and now this. It's been a year's worth of heaven for Motown fans, and it seems like it will never stop. Gifts Galore: Of course, the holidays are upon us, and I must remind everyone of the Billboard chart-topping DVD, Motown 25: Yesterday, Today & Forever, selling wildly beyond anyone's expectations; the DVD and Blu-ray release of the original 1960s Batman TV series, which starred Adam West and Burt Ward and is an item that will bring smiles to the hordes of baby boomers; and the new king-sized coffee table book from Taschen, 75 Years Of Marvel Comics, another boomer's delight. LGBT NEWS America is built on the fundamental promise that if you work hard, and play by the rules, you can get ahead. But today, millions of Americans in most states in the country go to work every day fearing that they could lose their jobs simply because of who they are or who they love. No current federal law adequately protects lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) workers from employment discrimination. This is completely contrary to our values as Americans – and it’s also bad for business. President Obama declared 2014 a year of action – working with Congress where they’re willing, but acting where he can when they refuse to take action. As part of this commitment to expanding opportunity for hardworking Americans, the President recently signed an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT employees and prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in federal employment. At a critical time for our nation’s economy, we need all of our workers to be focused on making the most of their talent, skill, and ingenuity, rather than worrying about losing their job due to discrimination. The economy functions best when workers are matched to the jobs with the best fit, maximizing their productivity, increasing wages and helping the bottom line for businesses. Discrimination is not just wrong, it also can keep qualified workers from maximizing their potential to contribute to the strengthening of our economy. For decades, companies have found that benefits and inclusive, flexible, and supportive workplace policies make it easier and more cost effective to recruit, retain, and motivate employees. The same logic applies to extending these basic protections and policies to LGBT workers. American workers should be judged by one thing only: their ability to get the job done. That’s why the President has long supported federal legislation to

For 40 years, Congress has considered various pieces of legislation meant to address LGBT workplace equality. Last November, the Senate passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) with strong bipartisan support. However, the House failed to act. This new action is consistent with the President’s commitment to advancing equality for the LGBT community, as well as his commitment to expanding opportunity for American workers and strengthening American business. And it is consistent with actions being taken by employers, including many federal contractors, across the country to support workplace equality, because they recognize it President improves Barack productivity, Obama reduces turnover, and supports their bottom line. Today, only 18 states and the District of Columbia have laws explicitly protecting LGBT workers from being fired because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and no federal law adequately protects LGBT workers from being fired because of who they are or who they love. According to surveys and studies, more than four in ten lesbian, gay, and bisexual people have experienced some form of employment discrimination based on their sexual orientation at some point in their lives, and 90 percent of transgender employees have experienced harassment, mistreatment or discrimination on the job. According to an analysis of 36 research studies by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law, “LGBT-supportive policies and workplace climates are linked to greater job commitment, improved workplace relationships, increased job satisfaction, and improved health outcomes among LGBT employees.” Most of America’s major companies know that workplace equality is important to staying competitive and retaining their best talent, and as a result, nondiscrimination policies are good for business.

New Things From The Tings
Returning for the first time since 2012, The Ting Tings – Katie White and Jules De Martino – have released Super Critical, their fist full-length album in many a moon (digitally, the music is out now everywhere that music is sold; the physical release will be January 13). The new album was recorded in, of all places, Ibiza, which seems natural for this glamorous globe-trotting pair. “We’d been to Berlin to make the second record and done nothing but get high and look at great architecture,” said De Martino. “Going to Ibiza had party written all over it. Obviously we were going to get nothing done.” Fans were first given a glimpse into the group’s new direction when it released the album’s first single, “Wrong Club.” “It’s about being in a club at 4 am and having to have a word with yourself because you’re having a bit of a breakdown,” White explained. “It’s shit, I’m off my face and I want to go home. It’s about what happened to nightclubs that made them not sexy, how the tempo became so fast that nobody moves any more, they just jerk, its gesture not rhythm. We wanted to make a song that felt exactly like the opposite of that. It’s very Ting Tings to do a sad song with uplifting music. That’s just who we are.”

25 Years Of Pickin’
It was the album that Nashville – and the music industry as a whole – didn't quite know what to do with, but the fans figured it out. On October 17, 1989, Mercury Records released the album Pickin' On Nashville, the debut disc from The Kentucky Headhunters. The band originated in 1968 and was comprised of Richard and Fred Young, along with cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney. They didn’t look or sound like any other groups in the business, they were more comfortable in t-shirts and jeans than your typical stage attire – and their sound was a hybrid of country, southern rock, and blues. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pickin’ On Nashville, the Headhunters were featured on SiriusXM, sharing their reflections and memories of the music. Barbra Streisand's new album, Partners, entered the Billboard 200 chart at #1, making her the only recording artist in music history to have a #1 release in six consecutive decades. Streisand, who has also acted on stage and screen during her career, also ranks as the best-selling female recording artist in history. She is the only woman to make the AllTime Top 10 Best Selling Artists list, an honor which includes fellow duet "partners" Elvis Presley and Billy Joel. She also now has the longest span of #1 albums in history; just under 50 years. (She first landed at the top of the chart in October 1964 with the album People, which contained the single of the same name). More amazing stats: Streisand has recorded 51 gold, 30 platinum, and 13 multi-platinum albums in her career, including 10 number ones. With 10, Catey Streisand is the female Shaw artist with the most #1 albums in Billboard's history. Streisand posted a note to Facebook thanking her fans, her duet partners, and her team: “Hearing the news that Partners entered the charts at #1 was an overwhelming feeling of joy!! … Being told that I've had #1 albums in six consecutive decades makes me feel truly blessed and grateful to have such loyal fans. First The Paramount, Then The Entire Nation
Catey Shaw:
New York's Catey Shaw certainly seems to be an artist on the rise; her recent appearance at The Paramount in Huntington opening for Bridgit Mendler wowed the packed house. Shaw also recently released a new video for her dreamy-pop track “Outerspace,” from her latest collection, The Brooklyn EP, out now wherever music is sold. Check out the videos from it at YouTube. The “Outerspace” video was shot and directed by SVA alumni Bryan Russell Smith – who also co-directed the “Human Contact” video. It captures Shaw's and the band’s first road trip to Canada, and features live footage from her debut performances in Toronto and Montreal.
