However, when a movie that many might have believed would be the “same-old same-old “ turns out to be one of the finest films to date during 2017, well, that’s real news. Loaded with heart, wit, warmth, charm, and characters that fans of both good movies and action films can actually care about, SpiderMan: The Homecoming feels really feels like a homecoming: A return to the style and form that made comic books so popular when Spidey actually debuted during the 1960s. Of course, there’s evil afoot: Michael Keaton is perfect casting as one of Spidey’s all-time greatest foes, The Vulture, and as our hero battles the winged baddie in order to save various landmarks from destruction, the action is plentiful and realistic – but again, what’s best about this movie is the performance by Holland, who in real life recently turned 21 and brings back the Peter Parker we all grew up with – especially those of us who actually read the comics. At the very least, this movie does the creation of comics legends Stan Lee and Steve Ditko proud.

years. Dolan had stated that he had given Jackson full autonomy in running the Knicks and that he trusted Jackson's five-year plan. So what changed? Jackson has always less than enthused about Carmelo Anthony, even though Dolan remained enamored of the star forward. Perhaps it was a lack of available options, but Jackson, then new with the Knicks, signed Anthony in 2014 to a five-year maximum contract that had a crippling notrade clause. Since then, Jackson has not stopped badmouthing the Knicks’ marquee player. If that weren’t demoralizing enough, Jackson threw a public temper tantrum when forward Kristaps Porzingis blew off his end-of-season exit interview. Porzingis, the team's first-round 2015 draft choice, has been one of the few success stories for the team during the last two seasonss. It's a safe bet that Dolan would have pre-

ferred that Jackson had handled the issue more discretely. Although this is merely conjecture, I have a feeling that Jackson’s grumpy, aloof personality rubbed Dolan the wrong way. Whereas former New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather knew how to shmooze at all times with “J.K,” it seems likely that Jackson probably declined invitations to mingle socially with Dolan and his buddies. Jarrett Allen, the Brooklyn Nets’ first-round pick, threw out a ceremonial first pitch before a recent Philadelphia Phillies-New York Mets game at Citi Field. The seven-footer admitted that he didn’t play baseball growing up, and it showed when he made a high arcing toss to Mets catcher Travis d’Arnaud. The good news is that he looks like he knows how to shoot free throws. I was saddened to learn of the death of former Mets pitcher Anthony Young, who lost 27 straight decisions from 1992-93 yet never lost his upbeat disposiCarmello tion. The Mets Anthony requested a moment of silence before a recent game. Opposing hitters used to always tell me that Young had great stuff. Even though he had that record-shattering losing streak, he did earn a number outlasted 18-time PBA Tour winner Chris Barnes to win The Grand Casino Hotel & Resort PBA Oklahoma Open on July 2 for his second title of the season and fourth of his career.
With both players struggling to start the match, Kent fired four consecutive strikes in the ninth and 10th frames to defeat Barnes, 194-188, during the ESPN telecast contested on two specially-installed lanes in the Grand Hotel Event Center for his first win on national television. “That was a lot harder than I wanted to work,” said the 24year-old Kent, “but I’m grateful to be standing here as the winner. It’s a dream come true.” With both players hampered by splits, Barnes held a 12-pin lead in the eighth frame but Kent was able to come back with strikes in the eighth, ninth and the first two in the 10th to clinch the win. “The first half of the game I just didn’t throw the ball well,” Kent said. “I knew after the seventh frame I still had a chance but I had to buckle down and make good shots. Finally, I executed the way I should have and was fortunate to put those strikes

He chose the 40-foot Bear lane condition for Saturday’s round but changed his selection to the 32-foot Wolf condition for the championship round. “In the semi-final the right side (of the lane) got a little ugly and the guys were struggling,” Kent said. “It just didn’t develop the way I thought and felt I would have a more consistent reaction on the Wolf. I was good with my decision, I just had to execute.” Kent had not won a match on television in six appearances which included three runner-up finishes that came in the 2016 U.S. Open, 2015 Wolf Open and 2013 Scorpion Open. “This win was important for my confidence,” Kent said. “I proved I have the versatility to compete on a variety of lane conditions and I can win in a pressure situation.” More PBA news: Ten-time PBA Tour winner Wes Malott defended his unofficial “King Of Bowling” crown on July 26 for the second time in a best-ofthree-game Xtra Frame pay-per-view showdown by defeating 18-time Tour winner Tommy Jones at FireLake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma (pictured center right). – Jerry Schneider, PBA

Phil Varca & The SlamJammers: A Blues Rockin’ Summer & A New Era
During this summer season, Phil Varca & The SlamJammers will bring their unique blues/rock sound to fans all over this region, and they’ll be able to provide more music than ever: The group has joined The Wing Agency stable of performing artists. The Clinton, Connecticut based agency, led by Andy Morrison, provides artists in the northeast with booking services for musical acts of all genres. Varca and musical stalwarts – bassist Tom Porter and drummer Russell Stone – have been focused primarily on festivals and support or opening slots for established national touring acts, including such legends as Robin Trower, Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Chris Duarte, Dave Mason, NRBQ, Double Trouble, Shemekia Copeland, and the veteran blues rocker Popa Chubby. “There's nothin' I like more than opening for an act and playing to a crowd that is there to see someone else,” said Varca, not long before he and his Slamjammers opened for Trower three years back.“Their people don't know you, and they don't owe you. We only get one chance to make a first impression, so I love playing for those people ... turning them on to our music for the first time and seeing their reaction.” Indeed, Varca and his veteran group of road warriors is a rock trio in the “old school” sense: Blues-based, thunderous, guitar-drums-and-bass that keeps the band in the forefront of area groups and gives a certain breed of fans something that’s hard to find: Traditional hard blues without pretense or apology. Varca and trio simply rock the house, and that’s more than enough for their most ardent fans. They’re recording artists as well: In May 1992, the group released Lightning & Thunder, a five-song EP, and appeared at The New York Music Seminar in 1992 and the 1993 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. In 1997 came the group’s full-length release, Ready, Willing And Able; the track "Skin On Skin" was featured in the 1998 horror film Evil Streets. The release of Live At Riverhead was next, recorded at The 2002 Riverhead Blues Festival. Varca and his SlamJammers will perform at The Jones Beach Bandshell in Wantagh on August 2; with Indigenous on August 6 at B.B. King’s Blues Club in New York City; and August 9 at The Space At Westbury Theater. More information: PhilVarcaandtheSlamJammers.com, or find them on Facebook and at SoundCloud.

Jazz & Blues
A Savory Stew: Area native Stew Cutler has slowly been making a name for himself on the blues and jazz scenes for more than a decade – and now, the famed guitarist returns with his first album since 2012. Cutler has never cared much for limiting his musical style. Whether as a master guitarist, producer, composer, or sideman, Cutler chooses to mix up jazz, soul, funk, and blues without care for any particular label. On his sixth album, Stew Every Sunday Night (to be Cutler released on September 15), Cutler continues in the vein of creating music utilizing that sense of freedom, taking a serendipitous route following an idea he’d had brewing in his mind for a while: The documentation of a treasured weekly residency. “I wanted to do a live recording in the place we play every Sunday – Arthur's Tavern in New York’s Greenwich Village,” said Cutler. “However, since it became clear that
it was going to be impossible to do it that way, I brought the band out to Queens and we basically played live. The overdubs and edits were kept to a minimum.” The results proved to be perfectly in line with Cutler’s vision, providing a unique, immediate sound sure to resonate with fans of his live set. “We are kind of an ‘artsy bar band,’” he said with a smile. “And on this recording there is a ‘bar band’ aspect that I hope we take to another level.” The contributions of musicians such as Bill McClellan, Julian Pollack, Nick Semrad, J.T. Bowen, and Bobby Harden are prominently featured on the record, highlighting that particular magic that can only spring from a live performance. Also helping things along is the assistance of engineer Rich Gaglia, who also lent a hand in producing the collection. “His ears are amazing, I think he is kind of a genius,” raved Cutler. Cutler’s long history of collaborative efforts is represented on Every Sunday Night in the form of several songs he’d composed with fellow free-minded musicians. “There are a couple of gems, ‘Miss D ‘and ‘TV Preacher,’ that were written by some people who are no longer here,” said Cutler. “Exposing those songs to the world feels great. Those songs would have just been forgotten.” The set also includes a selection of covers, which Cutler and his crew enjoyed taking on: “We got to put our own spin on some classic tunes, which is something that I haven’t done much of on my own recordings.” Overall, Cutler hopes the new record will keep his legacy moving forward – and keep him on the move in general. A seasoned touring artist, one of his favorite things to do is travel the globe bringing his music to international festivals and venues. Cutler’s very first tour was at age 19 with blues artist Z.Z. Hill, and since then he’s shared the stage and collaborated with a diverse list of artists including Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Meat Loaf, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Lester Bowie, David Sanborn, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, The Harlem Gospel Singers, and others. Cutler’s previous albums have included Trio/Live, Trio Music, and So Many Streams on the Fountainbleu label, as well as After Hours and Insignia.

Fairy Tales & Rock & Roll Legends: The Jordanaires & Golis Meet Cinderella
Long Island songwriters Bill and Ted Golis have composed a new song that was recently released – and this time, the multi-genre songsmiths have written a unique mashup of a fairy tale and a traditional music form with “The Cinderella Polka.” The song features Country Music Hall Of Famers The Jordanaires – the legendary vocal group that served as Elvis Presley's backup singers – as well as The Henry Golis Orchestra. Bill and Ted Golis had actually written the song years ago, but recently decided to use the song and issue it as a single. The Jordanaires previously recorded with Henry Golis for the album Henry Golis Presents Good Music With Friends, as well as the album Friends Of Henry Golis Wish You A Merry Christmas With The Jordanaires. The new recording was mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Fred Guarino of Tiki Recording Studios in Glen Cove, while the CD cover was designed by Ann-dee, a recording artist in her own right. “The Cinderella Polka” is now available at CDBaby and iTunes, and on the Spotify streaming service.

Their Rock Opera Is A Winning Gamble
Who: UniversalDice, an ambitious, veteran group with a progressive rock sound, recently released their fourth studio album on Infidels Records – entitled birth, love, hate, death – which, as reported by the band, ranks as their second rock opera. The group is comprised of Gerry Dantone (vocals), Bob Barcus (guitar), Eddie Canova (bass), and newest members Walt Sargent and Vincent Crici (keyboards). The Artists & Their Sound: From their official bio: “Infidels Records artists UniversalDice(.com) is a most unique band; just beneath the surface of their accessible, melodic and beautifully played and arranged modern/classic rock sound lies an ambitious and rich lyrical content that challenges pop music orthodoxy. There are few bands that not only make you think, and take you to another place musically, but can also force you to re-think what was once taken for granted. The songs, written and produced by Gerry Dantone, are always relevant, usually intensely emotional, and often unique in the rock music arena. At the same time, their memorable melodies recall the qualities admired in The Who, The Beatles, Green Day, and The Killers … Songwriter, singer, and political and philosophical writer/activist Gerry Dantone has perfected a style that is first and foremost humanistic, but also coherent, provocative and multi-layered. In addition, the band's primary themes are as big as they get – life and death, meaning and purpose. No other band is as prepared to tackle these subjects as UniversalDice.” To Obtain The New Album & Learn More About The Artists: birth, love, hate, death, and the earlier UniversalDice albums – My Name is Thomas..." (1998), mostly True Stories (2000), Out Of Many, One" (2005) – are available wherever music is sold in both digital and CD formats, including Spotify, iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, and the UniversalDice website. visible like they used to be, at least not in my line of vision). At press time, the #3 hit proves the Bieber theory, as he charts again on “I'm The One," which is officially credited to the incredibly popular DJ Kalid. Halsey was at #4 with "Now Or Never," and teen idol Shawn Mendes hit #5 with "There's Nothin' Holding Me,’ which gives us an idea of the

Sour Is Sweet: I spend so much time here dwelling on the “good old days” that I find myself ignoring the good new days: I snapped out of that trance when I decided to listen to Hydrograd, the new album from Stone Sour, a band that has apparently been around for quite a while that I have
Stone Sour remained blissfully ignorant of. Now I'm their number-one groupie; the album draws on ’70s and ’80s hard rock at its finest while being very much in touch with the here and now. One track, “Fabuless,” has become my play-it-over-and-over again jam track, and I find myself entranced by their ardent and absorbing YouTube videos – and thankfully, there's a lot of them. I've found my new fave rave rock & roll band, new to me, but maybe not to you. Now I'm off to do more exploring! Summer Hits: Since we're being so very current this time around, let's look at the pop charts! The big record of the summer (and possibly this year) is "Despacito" featuring Justin Bieber with Fonsi Luis and Daddy Yankee, which has been #1 on the singles chart for weeks. This makes two things abundantly clear: Bieber is one of the biggest stars of this decade, and Hispanic rhythms and themes are as big as hip hop in the mainstream Top 40. "Stay" by Zedd and Cara Alessia is also heard constantly on Z100 and WBLI, and Zedd has become a chart mainstay. Alessia has as well (sadly, if I walked past them on the street, I'd have no idea who they are; current pop stars are just not
completely passive, mid-tempo wallpaper tunes that will follow you around on the beaches this summer. One song lyric keeps springing into mind: "Rock & roll was nowhere to be found" ("Death To Disco," 1977). Spaning The Globe: Congratulations to Ginger Coyote on the 40th anniversary of Punk Globe, which began as a West Coast print publication and continues to rule the roost worldwide as the eminent voice of all
things punk – musically, politically, and elsewise. A tremendous amount of work goes into this monthly endeavor, and I'm quite proud to be a frequent contributor. Give us 40 more, Ginger!

An unfortunate recent headline hasn’t slowed her down: On September 22, Haley Reinhart will release What’s That Sound?, her debut release for Concord
Records. The new album features 11 renditions of classic songs from the 1960s, as well as three original tracks from Reinhart. A vocalist who started singing in her parents’ rock band when she was just seven, Reinhart purposely honed in on songs originally released between 1966 and 1969. "There is an undeniable connection between the late ’60s and now,” said Reinhart. “They're both turbulent, yet hopeful times. As I thought of what songs I'd like to reinterpret, I wanted to bring these similarities to the forefront. I also feel the urge to spread the revolutionary idea of people coming together through love and music.” Among the classis Reinhart covers on the new album are “Baby, It’s You,” “Oh! Darling,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Words Of Love,” “These Boots Were Made For Walkin’,” “Time Of The Season,” and more.
