FILM Thor: Ragnarok

Review by Cody Bell; photos (cover and review) courtesy Walt Disney Pictures

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldbum, Tessa Thompson, Clancy Brown, Taika Waititi Directed by Taika Waititi Marvel Studios/Walt Disney Pictures Once again, we must reference the wonderful/awful The Mighty Thor cartoons produced by GrantrayLawrence Animiation that were syndicated in 1966; “The Marvel Superheroes” cartoon program also featured Iron Man, Captain America, Sub-Mariner, and The Hulk on alternate airings. We won't harp on the non-existent animation (we loved these shows regardless), but we will detail how The Mighty Thor was portrayed: Constantly struggling to balance his “forbidden” love for nurse Jane Foster with trying to please his father, the Asgard king Odin – and constantly fight off the antics of his evil brother, Loki – Thor always spoke in solemn, deep tones, much belying his Norse God legend. Serious stuff, ya know. So, ladies and gentlemen, we bring you Thor: Ragnarok, which is a laugh riot – seriously. In fact, this film is so much fun that our prediction that DC's Justice League could pass the Marvel film franchises in terms of box office now seems sort of short-sighted. Time will tell, but it's going to be a close call. The change in tone clearly can be attributed to new Thor series director Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows, Hunt For The Wilderpeople), who

clearly is becoming this generation's Sam Raimi, capable of providing both action-packed thrills and belly laughs. All is different now: Thor has gone full Jacob DeGrom by shearing off his legendary long locks, and he isn't even carrying his hammer, his main weapon. And what a coterie of heroes and villains our Nordic hero must encounter to stem off Ragnarok, essentially the destruction of his beloved Asgard – Dr. Strange (Cumberbatch); Hela, The Goddess Of Death (a delightful, beyond scenerychewing Blanchett); the always ready to rumble Hulk (played, as it were, by Ruffalo; nobody really “acts” as The Hulk in these films), the stunning Valkyrie (an incredlble performance by Thompson,

who just wrote her name in the sand as a star here), and the off-kilter Grandmaster (the much over-exposed Goldblum). To say more would kind of ruin the plot and all the twist and turns, but let us note that this film is about as much fun as any nerd or geek could ever have at the movies … … and even if you're not into comic books, this is still a wildly entertaining ride that’s highly satisfying. What really brings it all home is yet another winning turn as Thor by Hemsworth, who we initially thought was miscast – but now, when we think of Thor, we think of him ... and certainly not the old static panels lifted straight from the comics that floated on the screen during those 1960s cartoons.

It almost seems impossible: Crossover superstar Taylor Swift released her new album, Reputation, on November 10 – and according to all estimates, it will blow right past every other album release this year to become the biggest seller of 2017. At press time, total tallies weren't yet available, but Billboard reported that Swift's newest “you done me wrong” concept album sold more than 700,000 copies … on the day it was released. That number grew to more than 925,000 two days later, and to one million just four days later. The album is clearly Swift's biggest opening release to date, buoyed by pre-release sales at Target and Walmart stores, which enticed fans with glossy magazines that came along with the physical disc. The album will be charted at #1 in the Billboard issue dated December 2. Swift performed on SiriusXM in front of a select group of SiriusXM subscribers the same day that her sixth studio album was released worldwide. Swift’s acoustic performance exclusively for SiriusXM listenders aired for days; SiriusXM Hits 1 was the first pop station in North America to support Swift. SiriusXM Hits 1 first played her music on June 7, 2007.

agent signings. It will be interesting to see whether The New York Yankees have interest in trying to re-sign veteran starter C.C. Sabathia – who had a good year in 2017 but isn’t getting any younger – or Michael Pineda, who has shown flashes of brilliance but has overall been a disappointing enigma. The New York Mets need to uplift their demoralized fan base by doing something splashy. Just saying that things will be better because (hopefully) their injured players (with the probable and significant exceptions of Michael Conforto and T.J. Alderson traded away veterans (with the exception of Asdrubal Cabrera, who actually demanded to be dealt) to playoff contenders in late July and early August, and from all the indicators got negligible value in return. The Mets’ accounting department likely was thrilled, as it reduced payroll expenses for 2017. The roster, as it currently stands, lacks anyone close to being a clubhouse leader (don’t count on David Wright ever coming back from his serious injuries), and teams can’t win anything in baseball without that intangible asset. Three cheers to the Yankees C.C. for displaying common sense: Sabathia The team announced that it would start April Monday through Thursday night games at 6:35 pm. The Mets will probably not do the same, since Citi Field is farther from Manhattan than Yankee Stadium. However, while we’re on the topic of scheduling, there is no reason why the Mets can’t slate all of their Saturday games for 1 pm, at least until Memorial Day weekend. media over the years. A good example of that was Boston radio sports shock jock Michael Felger saying on air that former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay got what he deserved when the private plane he piloted

crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. The popularity of Barstool Van Sports among the sports frat boy set has also encouraged needless and

stupid smack talk. ESPN was about to air Barstool Van’s “Pardon My Take” on Tuesday mornings at 1 am, but pulled the plug after one episode when a lot of ESPN air talent, including “Sunday Morning Countdown” host Samantha Ponder (who had been in the critical crosshairs of Barstool Van Sports’ Dave Portnoy) became vocal to ESPN CEO John Skipper about doing business with BVS. Barstool Van Sports CEO Erika Nardini was completely unapologetic about her company’s lowbrow image and how that might scare blue chip advertisers away from it when she was interviewed by Sports Business Journal columnist Terry Lefton at the recent Sports Marketing Symposium in Manhattan. Burgess Owens, one of many nondescript first-round New York Jets draft picks, has written a book that articulates his conservative political viewpoints. The title – Liberalism Or How To Turn Good Men Into Whiners, Weenies, And Wimps (Post Hill Press) – is one that Rush Limbaugh would envy. Former New York Rangers fan favorite, Sean Avery, has written his autobiography, the cleverly titled Ice Capades (Blue Rider Press). It’s clear that the irrepressible Avery did not use a ghost writer, because this book is clearly in his voice. Not surprisingly, he attacks his former coach, John Tortorella, and more or less questions Tortorella’s sanity in both the way Tortorella treated his players and the way the coach reflexively called the team’s beat writers idiots. He was really pissed off at “Torts,” however, for wondering aloud whether

Avery's side businesses or his going to trendy New York nightclubs after games were affecting his performance on the ice and commitment to the team. At a time when homophobia was rampant in pro sports, Avery was an outspoken advocate for marriage equality and couldn’t give a crap what anyone thought because of his interest in fashion or his friendship with Vogue editor Anna Wintour – which Sean resulted in Avery a highly publicized internship at the magazine. Avery is married to model Hilary Rhoda and is now studying acting. He added that he has always been interested in performing Shakespeare since he grew up near Stratford, Ontario, famous for its summer production of The Bard’s works.

So They Got That Goin' For 'Em … Which Is Nice: Currently running on Facebook is the new show “Bill Murray & Brian DoyleMurray’s Extra Innings,” an original unscripted series on minor league baseball hosted by the comedy icons. The 10-episode digital series debuted on Facebook Watch on Monday, November 20, with new episodes available weekly on Mondays. People can add the show to their watchlist by following the Bill Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray’s Extra Innings Show Page. In the series, Bill Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray travel together to visit minor league baseball in cities across the U.S. The Murray brothers bring their own particular brand of comedy and heart, their favorite sport, and the communities they meet along the way. The Murrays have fun with The Martha's Vineyard Sharks, Charleston RiverDogs, St. Paul Saints, and Kansas City T-Bones. They also spend time with the Kansas City MLB Urban Youth Academy and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to honor and support both the future and past of baseball. Paula When asked about the show, Bill Poundstone Murray described it as “A little something to fill a baseball fan's off-season hole in the heart.” “Doing this project was more fun than a bench-clearing brawl. And like a baseball bench-clearing brawl, no one got hurt!” added Brian Doyle-Murray. When asked the genesis of the series, executive producer and Oso founder Dub Cornett said: "I dig minor league baseball, meeting folks and having fun; and it seems that Bill does too. So when I ran into Brian Doyle-Murray at a birthday party, I thought that traveling with the Murray brothers to games around America would be a fun, cool Bill & Brian-Doyle show, and so did they. Murray It’s simple as that." Compiled by Bob Smith – brother, can you spare a vocation?

The Lounge At The Space At Westbury December 7 at 8 PM thespaceatwestbury.com (516) 283- 5566 It will be musical “Fields Of Gold” as this big, new tribute to Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner – better known by his fans as Sting – pores through the British artist's vast canon of hits, from his rocking Police days through his MOR solo material.

Uppercut

K.J. Farrell's, Bellmore December 8 at 7 PM kjfarrells.com (516) 804-9925 This big, horn-driven band is back, performing virtually every hit you've ever loved by Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, and more. And there's more on this night of music and memories: Fools For Kings, performing the best of the 90s grunge era, take over the stage at 10 pm. 14 • Good Times Magazine - November 14 - 27, 2017

Gil Parris

Treme, Islip December 2 at 8 PM • tremeislip.com (631) 277-2008 He’s back at Treme: The Grammy-nominated rock, blues, and jazz guitarist returns to Long Island for yet another appearance at this Islip hotspot. Lauded for his solo albums, Parris has also recorded and toured with a host of major artists, including Dr. John, Blood Sweat & Tears, Diane Schuur, David Mann, Billy Vera, Bobby Caldwell, and Toni Braxton.

Ride The Country: Shania Twain's long layoff hasn't hurt her megastardom: Her first album in 15 years, Shania Now, rocketed to #1 on the Billboard charts upon its September 29 release … Gene Watson continues to stay true to his traditional country style with the release of his new record with New Day Christian Distribution, My Gospel Roots, available December 8. At the recent R.O.P.E. Awards, Watson celebrated his win for the 2017 Entertainer of the Year, an honor he shared with one of his best friends in the music business, Jeannie Seely. Watson has proven that he is one of the great traditional country artists of his generation, and is defiantly proud to release a Gospel album that stands out in the wave of today’s popular music. “This record really Shania goes back to my Twain roots of being in that little church and singin’ hymns. We had nothing but love, family and prayer back then, so I wanted to honor those traditions with this album,” Watson said … “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks has released a new single, “Six Strings And Diamond Rings,” which features a collaboration with Robert Randolph; it's the first song from Hicks’ forthcoming album, set to release in early 2018 and recorded in Nashville at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Studio … Everything old is new in Nashville (and thank the heavens for that): Conway Twitty, who scored 55 #1 Country hits (second only to George Strait), is the subject of a new set as Taylor Country Rewind Records Hicks has released Timeless, now available at major music sellers and through ConwayTwitty.com. The songs on this new set haven't been heard since their recording in 1972, included in a series of musical recordings from top artists at the time as part of a United States recruitment program. Performers such as Dolly Parton, George Jones, and Waylon Jennings recorded 15-minute performances that were distributed to more than 2,000 radio stations throughout the world, intended for commercial release. Tom Gramuglia of Country Rewind noted that he can’t wait for fans to hear this album: “These recordings were long forgotten and few people who knew of their existence. They’ve never before been made commercially available to the public and I truly felt like this music needed to be shared with long-time traditional fans, and heard by our younger generation of millennials who have a flavor and inkling for country music recording artists that made American country music great.” Songs include the classic “Hello Darlin'” and other hits such as “The Image Of Me” and “Next In Line.” Photo: Shania Twain courtesy Mercury Nashville

FELIX CAVALIERE

One Of Rock’s Most Cherished Voices At Madison Theatre

In case you might not know: During his 50years and counting career, Cavaliere has done it all, being elected to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Songwriters Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and Grammy Hall of Fame. With The Young Rascals and The Rascals, “Good Lovin’” hit #1 in February 1966, and they continued on with a string of hits such as “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin’ (#1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (#1 in 1968). The Rascals are considered the best “blue-eyed soul” group to come out of the 1960s, as well as one of the groups with the most record sales. The classically trained pianist, born in upstate Pelham, idolized Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and Sam Cooke. From a young age, Caviliere embraced the Hammond organ and pioneered a fresh, rock & roll sound. Upon leaving Syracuse University to form The

Escorts, and become a backup musician for Joey Dee & The Starliters and later Sandy Scott, few could tell in in those early years that his legendary next stop – the forming of The Young Rascals with Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish – would be the beginning of an illustrious hall of fame career. Early in 1965, Cavaliere formed The Young Rascals – and by October of that year, they caught the attention of promoter/manager Sid Bernstein with their high-energy set at Long Island’s legendary music club, Barge. Signed to Atlantic Records, and now called The Rascals, the mega hit “Good Lovin’” struck #1 in February 1966. They followed suit with a string of hits including “I’ve Been Lonely Too Long,” “Groovin’ (#1 in 1967), “How Can I Be Sure,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” (#1 in 1968). By the early 70s, The Rascals experimented with more jazzinfluenced sounds, and moved to Columbia Records. The Rascals disbanded in 1972, but Cavaliere has thrived, releasing a string of solo albums and touring – and even was a member of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band with a bevy of other legendary rockers.

A Yearly Tradition At NYCB Theatre At Westbury

Joanie Madden and Cherish the Ladies return to The Jeanne Rimsky Theater at The Landmark On Main Street in Port Washington in a follow-up to last year's sold out holiday concert on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 7 pm. Tickets: landmarkonmainstreet.org, or call The Landmark at (516) 767-6444.

Todd Rundgren It's getting to be an annual tradition in these parts, and his legion of loyal fans wouldn’t have it any other way: Coming soon is the yearly winter appearance by the legendary rocker Todd Rundgren at The NYCB Theatre At Westbury. This year's event is Saturday, December 9 at 8 pm; tickets are at thetheatreatwestbury.com or via ticketmaster.com; for more information, call (516) 247-5200. It's been quite a year for Rundgren, the multicolored-tressed jack of all musical trades – he received honorary doctorates on May 13 from Berklee College of Music and on May 21 from DePauw University, as well as once again taking part in the national tour of Ringo Starr's AllStarr band, as well as serving as a special guest on a massive tour with Yes. As a solo artist, one never knows what to expect from this quirky artist and producer; this tour will bring Rundgren out in support of his newest album, White Knight, fronting a band of stellar musicians including Prairie Prince, Kasim Sulton, Jesse Gress, and Greg Hawkes.

They're Still Cool For Cats: Put The Squeeze On The Paramount

Squeeze’s “Join The Dots Tour 2017” with special guest Wesley Stace comes to Long Island on Saturday, December at 8 pm at The Paramount in Huntington. A “Founder’s Room Afterparty” applies for this event. For tickets and information, log on to paramountny.com, or call (631) 673-7300. Squeeze first formed in 1973, shortly after Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook had begun their songwriting partnership, brought together by an ad in a sweetshop window. By 1977, they had made their recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits which lasted until 1982, the maturity of their songs outliving their initial burst of chart activity on the back of the “New Wave” movement. Over the years, there have been solo careers and occasional separations, but the Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriting duo Chris and Glenn reunited 10 years ago to relaunch Squeeze, and they have been touring, writing, and recording together since.

Taking their name from a traditional Irish jig, Cherish The Ladies shares Irish traditions with audiences worldwide. In this program, the Ladies perform classic Christmas carols in their signature arrangements, highlighting unique Celtic instrumentation, harmonies, and step dancing. This Christmas program is complete with a full band and an array of traditional Irish step dancers.

THERE’S SPACE ENOUGH FOR

The Mavericks – with an opener that truly lives up to the title of “special guests” in Antigone Rising, the Long Island-based rock band that ranks among the most influential indie bands in genre history – perform on Friday, December 8 at 8 pm at The Space At Westbury Theater. Tickets and information: thespaceatwestbury.com or (516) 283-5566. The’re on a mission: The genre-defying Mavericks are declaring their independence and stepping out on their own on tour in support of Brand New Day, the first studio album released on Mono Mundo Recordings, the label they founded in 2016. Brand New Day is the follow-up to the albums Mono (2015) and In Time (2013). Flashing the same beyond-category style that has defined The Mavericks, the new album introduces a collection of taut, energetic, economical songs sure to be embraced by both original fans of their Top 10 albums and hit singles of the ‘90s and a new generation of listeners who have joined the party since their 2012 reunion. “This is the first studio record on our own label, and it is an important component in the band’s history,” said The Mavericks’ Raul Malo, “but the real goal was just to make a great record.” Expect to hear songs from Brand New Day as well as favorites from their vast canon during this concert.

Rhythm Tracking With Jimi LaLumia

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Coincidence Machine Progressive ... Impressive

Who: Coincidence Machine has had a successful year as a progressive rock unit, performing at clubs throughout the area; they've recently brought audiences nights of music centering on legends such as Jeff Beck, King Crimson, and others to music fans hungry for serious musicianship. The Artists & Their Sound: From their bio: “The word ‘multistylistic’ is one way to describe the extraordinarily rich and complex sound of Valley Streambased prog-rock jazz-fusion band Coincidence Machine, comprised of Jimi ‘Twang!’ Durso (bass, guitar, harmonica, vocals, and loops), Matt Klein (guitar, mandolin), Eli Maniscalco (drums, percussion, vocals), and Matt Cochran (saxophone). “The band performs throughout Long Island with a repertoire of a wide range of music that includes covers from such diverse sources as Thelonious Monk, King Crimson, John McLaughlin, and Bob Dylan, along with the band’s original tunes. The band’s signature sound weaves generously through musical genres while adding delightfully offbeat twists and turns of melodies grounded in a solid and impressive level of musicianship. The Village Voice described them as ‘Satan's Favorite Lounge Act.’ “Singer, songwriter, and multiinstrumentalist Jimi Durso grew up emulating the blues and bluesbased music, which led to the discovery of jazz, reggae, metal, folk, classical, and hidustani sounds, all of which he includes in his musical vision. Jimi has performed with and been part of many different musical acts, including ska groups The Scofflaws, The Toasters, and Defactos, jazz artists such as John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, T.K. Blue, and Piltdown Man, as well as indie rock groups such as Erratic Sculpture and PUD before forming Coincidence Machine in 2013. “The band has re-imagined classic albums such as In the Court Of The Crimson King, Kind Of Blue, Blow By Blow, and Revolver. Coincidence Machine will perform at Sip This in Valley Stream on December 30 at 8 pm, and will present In The Court Of The Crimson King at Bartini Bar in Babylon on January 19 at 8 pm. Once a month (usually the last Sunday from 1 to 4 pm), they host a jam session at Sip This, where musicians and singers are invited to sit in with Coincidence Machine and experience firsthand how this ensemble interacts.” For more information, visit CoincidenceMachine.net, or find them on Facebook at Twang!

Still “The Boss”: The American Music Awards, a yearly tradition on ABC for decades, has presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Diana Ross in grand fashion – on a night when the show was hosted by one of the network’s biggest stars, Tracee Ellis Ross, Diana's daughter. The big question: What took them so long? While The Supremes were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame when they opened that joint, the solo Diana Ross has not been inducted, even though The Beatles as a group and as solo members have been inducted. There can be no denying that Ross' solo career was just as huge as her time as front person for The Supremes, so how does this equate? The Jackson 5 were inducted as a group, and later, solo Michael Jackson got the nod; the Hall had no choice with that Motown act. The Supremes were the

second biggest recording group of the 1960s, right behind The Beatles; The Supremes had 12 #1 singles – a feat never since duplicated by a recording group.

These are unquestioned facts, along with The Supremes delivering the first #1 album by a female group in the rock era, as well as the first #1 album for the Motown Records label on the pop chart. It’s also a fact that Ross went on to enjoy eight more #1 records as a solo artist is just further icing on the cake,

Photos provided by Jimi LaLumia

as she was the face and voice of The Supremes, so one wonders why she is constantly relegated to a lesser status for those too ignorant to know better. The great news for Ross fans is that a newly expanded Ultimate Christmas Supremes double CD with booklet set has been released – yes, it’s physical product, something you can hold and display. Right alongside it, a digital-only, 15 track Diamond Diana hits package has been released, which was probably hastily assembled to coincide with The American Music Awards induction event. For whatever reasons, Ross has refused to go back into the studio and record new material, even though the legendary Nile Rodgers has been hounding her for years to do so. Perhaps this flurry of activity will help change her mind; in the meantime, we'll have a Merry Motown New Year!
