“Shucked” is an outlier – an original new “cornfed, corn-bred” musical about a conman who teams up with a hick farmer. The farm-to-fable musical has a score by Nashville country songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, a book by Tonywinner Robert Horn and direction by Jack O’Brien. John Kander and Fred Ebb’s iconic score (with new songs and additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda) for the 1977 Martin Scorsese film serves as the inspiration for the highly anticipated new musical “New York, New York” about a musician (Colton Ryan), a singer (Anna Uzele) and other aspiring artists trying to make it in 1946 New York. Perry Henzell’s 1972 groundbreaking film “The Harder They Fall,” about an aspiring reggae singer (Natey Jones) disillusioned by the corrupt music industry, who becomes an outlaw, has been adapted into a new musical, using Jimmy Cliff’s songs, by Pulitzer-winner Suzan-Lori Parks, who wrote new songs for this world premiere. “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” will be catnip to theatergoers who loved the Mischief Theatre Company’s outrageous farce “The Play That Goes Wrong.” The same Cornley Drama Society attempts to stage the J.M Barrie classic but once again is undermined by technical mishaps and backstage feuds. Pulitzer Prize winner “Fat Ham,” reinvents Shakespeare’s Hamlet as Juicy, a Black, queer Southern college student returning home to his mother’s wedding at a North Carolina backyard barbecue. James Ijames’s play is a comic delight, celebrating gay identity. Marcel Spears heads a personality-filled ensemble under Saheem Ali’s expert direction. Previews begin March 21. Larissa FastHorse’s satirical comedy, “The Thanksgiving Play” skewers woke sensibilities as a troupe of progressive, well-meaning artists attempts to create a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving school play incorporating Native American Heritage Day (without the participation of Native Americans).
