Repelled by the accepted style of “breaking a horse’s spirit,” Roberts developed his own gentle approach to human interaction with horses in the hopes of someday transforming horse training standards worldwide. LONG ISLAND SOUNDS
BOB MARLEY’S SONS BRING ONE LOVE TO FOREST HILLS
Five of Bob Marley’s sons brought their father’s music and message to Forest Hills Stadium on September 22nd. Mixing Reggae, Ska, Funk, and Rock, the sons sang about spirituality, justice, love, and hope.
Ziggy Marley opened the concert with “Natural Mystic:” “There’s a natural mystic, blowing through the air, if you listen carefully now you will hear.” Done in a slow Reggae, transcendental rhythm it bled into the 5 sons assertively singing, “Get Up, Stand Up.”
“So Much Trouble in the World” followed but the rapid-fire, hip-hop-style lyrics were sometimes hard to pick up. The next song, “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Heathen,” had good rhythm and blistering guitar solos. The music was sharp and taut throughout the concert.
The songs did not end by increasing the intensity, volume, or crescendo for too long. Many of the songs bled into one another like the relevant, “War,” going into “No More Trouble,” followed by “Running Away.” “Wake Up and Live” seamlessly went into “Shalom Salaam,” a Ziggy Marley song.
The political song, “Concrete Jungle,” showed videos of 1970s Jamaica of youths with guns, riot police, and the contentious 1978 election. It was Bob Marley’s concert that year that brought the country together.
“Rastaman Vibration” and Wake Up and Live” gave a contemplative feel. The three female backup vocalists, and the saxophone, trumpet, and trombone were an excellent part of these songs. Bass and electric guitars, keyboard, drums, and a percussionist filled out the rest of the backup band.
“Three Little Birds” had the Marley brothers stopping so the audience could sing, “Don’t worry about a thing because everything is going to be alright.” “Satisfy My Soul” and “Buffalo Soldier” were also crowd pleasers.
Damian Marley said during his song, “Medication,” “My brothers and I are big advocates of marijuana. Cannabis saves lives!”
“Iron Lion Zion” was an exciting use of bongos, horns, and the three female backup vocals. “Exodus” had each of the Marley brothers taking turns singing lead. It was the last song followed quickly by two encores, “Could You Be Loved” and “One Love.”
by David Schneier
During the last song, the Marley sons’ last message was to ask three times, “Do you love Bob Marley?” It was enthusiastically answered yes. It summed up the night’s message.
The 13,000-seat stadium was near capacity. A multi-racial, multi-ethnic, mostly middle-aged crowd mostly stood for the nearly two-hour show. As part of the performance, a man on stage waved the Rastafarian flag during all of the songs.
NYPD Counter-Terrorism, NYPD Officers, and Stadium Security provided multi-layered security. They were not in your face, only asking for the aisles in the stadium to be clear of people.

Pete Alonso’s ninth inning threerun home run in Game 3 to give the Mets the lead, and eventually the series victory, over the Milwaukee Brewers, was the biggest moment in his Mets career. It was also one of the most dramatic dingers in Mets history.
No one was cheering harder when the ball just made it over Brewers’ rightfielder Sam Frelick’s glove and into the stands than Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras. Pete will be a free agent after the completion of the World Series, and he struggled this year despite his 34 home runs.
Many Mets fans, and team president David Stearns, were ready to bid adieu to him. Alonso’s blast reminded every cynical fan what he has to offer.
I won’t wade into the tired debate about whether the late Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame, but I will always fondly remember him for advice he gave to me. In 1981 Rose was 40 years old and playing for the Phillies with the same energy as he did as a Reds rookie in 1963. I asked him how he kept his youthful enthusiasm for his work. He asked me what I did, and I told him I was accountant for Price Waterhouse. “Do you like it?” he asked. “Not with the same joy you have for your work!” I retorted. “You will feel like you are 75 when you are 25 if you don’t like what you do,” he advised. He was right, and I left my job before the end of that year.

The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis was created by the late NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti nearly forty years ago after his son, Marc, was paralyzed playing linebacker for the Citadel in a football game. The organization’s research has helped make many people regain ambulatory function who otherwise would have been confined to a wheelchair for the rest of their lives.
The Buoniconti Fund held its annual Sports Legends dinner in New York City in September, and among the honorees were Roger Clemens and agent Leigh Steinberg, who was the basis for the 1996 Tom Cruise film, “Jerry Maguire.”
I told Clemens, his son, Kody, who is an infielder for the Phillies, is a pleasure to speak with.
I informed him I watched Kody strike out some hitters when he was asked by his manager, Rob Thomson, to mop up in a blowout game. “Kody struck out Shohei Ohtani in a game. He got Ohtani to sign a baseball for him. We are now in the record books by most strikeouts by a father and son combination. We surpassed the Stottlemyres. It is a mark which will stand forever!” Roger proudly said. I asked Leigh Steinberg if his business has grown larger because college players can now make money with endorsements under what is called “NIL” (Name, Image, Likeness) deals. “It has, but it comes with headaches. Fifteen-year-old kids are getting NIL offers, and they and their parents, are not prepared for what that entails.”

The fall season hits its stride with an embarrassment of riches. Biographical musicals include “Tammy Faye” in which Olivier Award-winner Katie Brayben stars as the larger-than-life televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Under Rupert Goold’s direction, Christian Borle co-stars as Jim Bakker and Michael Cerveris plays rival televangelist Jerry Falwell. The biomusical, with new music by Elton John, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears and book by James Graham, arrives on Broadway after premiering at London’s Alemeida Theatre in 2022. Daniel Dae Kim (“Lost”) stars as a playwright named DHH in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of David Henry Hwang’s 2007 semi-autobiographic farce “Yellow Face.” In 1990, Hwang’s fictionalized doppelganger protests the casting of Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in “Miss Saigon,” only to mistakenly cast a white actor as the Asian lead in his play about yellowface casting. Jim Parson’s returns to Broadway as the Stage Manager in Tony-winning director Kenny Leon’s “newly relevant” revival of Thornton Wilder’s 1938 Pulitzer Prize-winning classic “Our Town,” in which Leon reimagines Wilder’s turn-ofthe-century Grovers Corner as a racially diverse town to better reflect the reality of America. The Gibbs’s (Billy Eugene Jones and Michelle Wilson) are now Black, while the Webbs (Richard Thomas and Katie Holmes) are white. The play charts young love, marriage and death in the lives of Ephraim Sykes’s George Gibbs and Zoey Deutch’s Emily Webb as it celebrates the eternal truths of the beauty and brevity of life. Adam Driver stars as a narcissistic country music icon and movie star who, after his mother’s death, decides to abandon stardom for the “simple life,” returning to his Tennessee hometown in an off-Broadway revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s “Hold on to Me Darling.” The play was described in its 2016 Atlantic Theatre premiere as a “comic study of the bad faith and bad behavior of a narcissistic celebrity and those around him.” Neil Pepe once again directs a cast that includes Keith Nobbs and C.J. Wilson reprising their roles from the Atlantic premiere. (Lucille Lortel Theatre) holdontomedarling.com

BROOKS & DUNN AND LAINEY WILSON TURN IT UP
Country duo Brooks & Dunn join forces with multi-Platinum, GRAMMY® award-winning artist Lainey Wilson for an electric re-imagination of their 2005 number one hit “Play Something Country.” The propulsive country anthem highlights the signature blend of honky-tonk style and country-rock sound from both Brooks & Dunn and Wilson. “Play Something Country” is the first release from the upcoming REBOOT II, releasing Nov. 15 via Sony Music Nashville.
With a catchy chorus and rebellious flair, Wilson brings a bold ZZ Top-inspired sound to “Play Something Country,” perfectly matching her fiery performance style.
REBOOT II is far from a tribute album, it’s a celebration of Brooks & Dunn’s lasting influence and versatility, showcasing how their music continues to resonate with contemporary artists and generations. The sequel to their acclaimed 2019 collaboration project, REBOOT II follows the format of re-imagined B&D classics—except this time, a brand new group of today’s most engaging artists were given maximum creative freedom.
They recently announced 2025 dates for the first leg of their NEON MOON TOUR; for a full list of upcoming tour dates and to purchase tickets, visit https:// www.brooks-dunn.com/.
ASHLEY WINELAND’S “TUMBLEWEED”
In the midst of her 50+ city tour and fresh off a show-stopping performance opening for Jo Dee Messina, Ashley Wineland announced her third single, “Tumbleweed,” a pure collision of hope and heartbreak. Produced by Marti Frederiksen—renowned for his work with Carrie Underwood, Ozzy Osborne, and Aerosmith. “Tumbleweed” is an unsettled romance, intense and consuming yet fleeting. The lyrics capture a love that blows in like a forceful wind, sweeping you off your feet only to move on just as quickly, leaving a trail of dust.
Ashley says, “The lyrics tell the story of a whirlwind romance with a person who is so powerful and all-encompassing, only for that person to eventually roll on to the next best thing. It’s full of hope and heartbreak. Country as country love songs can get!” This type of love is thrilling, much like the high-energy of Ashley’s previous singles, “Crank It Up” and “Heartbreak Boots” leaving you craving more.

MOTÖRHEAD ‘WE TAKE NO PRISONERS’ THE SINGLES
Back in the golden era of the single of the 1970’s and 80’s, Motörhead would regularly assault the ears of chart listeners on a Sunday afternoon with a string of hit smashes in the rock charts of the time. The single as a format may have been less prominent from the 90’s onwards due to the dawn of the CD, but that didn’t diminish the calibre of the singles and promos that Motörhead continued to release. These mostly CD singles are now rare and highly collectable, so it only feels fitting for this era of the band’s bullet belt full of hits to be reappraised and released on the format that singles were born for, 7” vinyl.
We Take No Prisoners is a collection of the bands singles spanning 1995 to 2006, and available as a nine 7” single box set and expanded double CD and digital editions. From crowd pleasers like the pummeling ‘Sacrifice’, through their unique cover of Sex Pistols, ‘God Save The Queen’ to the semi-acoustic roots vibes of ‘Whorehouse Blues’, no one could deny their song writing prowess was still second to none.

ALEX VAN HALEN TWO ‘BROTHERS’ BOOK SIGNING
Alex Van Halen’s deeply candid and insightful book, BROTHERS, is not like any rock & roll memoir you’ve ever read. He shares his story of family, camaraderie, immigration, music, and loss, and offers a remarkable tribute to his late little brother and bandmate, Edward, a once-in-a-generation talent and transformed our understanding of what it’s possible to do with a guitar.
A fascinating story of a legendary band, its talent, and the passion to create, BROTHERS takes readers deep inside with tales of musical politics, infighting, and plenty of bad-boy behavior. But mostly Alex’s portrayal of brotherhood, music, and enduring love shines through the drama. BROTHERS provides the definitive take on Edward Van Halen’s life and death from the one who knew and loved him best.
Tickets for the book signing and live conversation events, as well as book preorders, are available now via Van-Halen.com. Monday, Oct. 21 @ 12 Noon –Barnes & Noble – NYC
