After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots); a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) and four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as the voice of Dr. Dillamond.

LEGENDS OF LONG ISLAND MUSIC AWARDS SET FOR NOVEMBER 19TH
They say the wheels of justice turn slowly, but nowhere near as slow as the emergence of The Long Island Music Business Organization. Let me explain... Let’s flashback to the year 1979, we’re down in the dark and dank bowels of My Father’s Place club in Roslyn.
Back in those days, Eppy held court downstairs, and upstairs he brought the cream of the music world to Long Island. Seated around some tables were myself, Eppy, Mike Cono of All Record Distributors, Phil Basile, the godfather of Long Island clubs, (Action House, Speaks, Calderone Theatre, Concerts East) and with Phil, then Town of Hempstead Supervisor Alphonse D’Amato (later U.S. Senator), WBAB Radio, WLIR. There were a few more who I’ve forgotten.
By Richard Branciforte
Time passed, the idea was put aside. Good Times followed up with The Best Band contests, in the days when people actually voted only once, unlike some of today’s contests.
1989 I went to Austin and Good Times was a cosponsor of SXSW, which took place that year in The Holiday Inn and at a dozen clubs. I was jealous, and came back determined we could do the same here.
1990 saw The Goodies Awards, held at Hofstra and Joan Jett, Ron Delsener and dozens of other Long Island stars showed up to be honored.
1991 saw the birth of The Long Island Music Festival,
We were there to discuss an idea I had, to form a Music Business Organization to promote Long Island Music.
Everyone agreed this was a good idea, after all, this was The Golden Age of Long Island Music. Good Times, celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary was 96 pages an issue then, and Rumbottoms, Hammerheads, Cheers, The Right Track Inn and dozens more were packed every night. Wet t-shirt nights were big, and put Zebra and Twisted Sister on a double bill and you had a thousand people, easy.
featuring 100 bands competing at 35 clubs, with winners at each club moving on to semi-finals and
the finals. The finals were 100% judges only and the winner received $1,000 cash and a slot at SXSW, or some other big music festival that we co-sponsored. The LIMF drew nearly 10,000 people each year and ran for nearly 16 years. (Continued on page 18)
SPORTS BEAT
There wasn’t a Subway Series this year, as the Yankees held up their end, but the Mets fell to the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. Nevertheless, it was a surprisingly successful year for the baseball team from Queens.
Little was expected from the Mets going into the 2024 season. They had a new and untested manager in Carlos Mendoza. They were without their ace pitcher Kodai Senga for most of the season as he suffered an arm injury during spring training. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was a no-show for the first two months of the season. Third baseman Brett Baty struggled in the first third of the season and wound up spending the rest of 2024 playing for the Syracuse Mets.
Mark Vientos was called up when Baty was sent down and that is when things started looking up for the Amazin’s. Vientos had an uneven 2023 season as he showed flashes of power but struck out way too often. He worked on his batting eye as he cut down on his strikeouts. He did not sacrifice power as he hit twentyseven home runs during the regular season and added four more during the playoffs. He also worked hard on his fielding. While Mark may never be a Gold Glove winner, he is no longer a liability at the hot corner.
While it is still a long way from the storied Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, the Mets meeting the Phillies for the first time in the playoffs, in this case the National League Division Series, adds a lot of juice to the Turnpike Series. The distance between Citi Field and Citizens Bank Park is only one hundred miles, which is less than half of the distance between Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. Citizens Bank Park, which turned twenty this past season, is still one of the nicest baseball
BROADWAY: HOLIDAY BOUNTY
“Here she is, boys. Here she is, world” Here’s Audra. In the most highly anticipated show this season, sixtime Tony-winner Audra McDonald stars in the Mt. Everest of musical theater roles – Madame Rose -- in George C. Wolfe’s revival of the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurent masterpiece “Gypsy.” With her magnificent voice and spectacular acting chops who better to tackle the role of Rose, the relentless, ruthless stage mother, who channels her frustrated ambitions into turning her daughters into vaudeville headliners? In an inspired casting coup, Tony-winner Danny Burstein co-stars as Herbie, the smitten lover/manager whom Rose charms and manipulates; and the dazzling Joy Woods (“I Can Get It for You Wholesale,” “The Notebook”) plays her klutzy, sensitive, unnoticed daughter Louise, who blossoms into the swan Gypsy Rose Lee. Previews begin November 21. (Majestic Theatre) gypsybway.com
Another highly anticipated musical is “Death Becomes Her,” adapted from the 1992 cult film comedy. Megan Hilty (“Smash”) and Jennifer Simard star in the Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn roles as frenemies with a grudge that lasts forever after taking a magical potion giving them eternal youth. Christopher Sieber and Destiny Child’s Michelle Williams co-star under choreographer Christopher Gattelli’s direction in the musical comedy (with book by Marco Pennette, and score by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey). While the New York sports media will obviously be centering on the free agency of Juan Soto and Pete Alonso, but an intriguing option for both the Mets and Yankees is Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, who hits with power, and is a solid outfield defender.
The FOX Sports baseball studio team of Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David “Big Papi” Ortiz clearly have learned a thing or two from TNT’s NBA studio team of Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O’Neal. They know their viewers want baseball insight, but they also want to laugh and be entertained.
A case in point was Derek Jeter playing off his no-nonsense image and leaving the desk at Citi Field when Mr. And Mrs. Met approached Kevin Burkhardt. Jeter feigned disgust, but it was all an act, and it made for good TV.
Mr. And Mrs. Met were also on hand for the New York City Marathon as they helped New York Road Runners give away four hundred pairs of New Balance running shoes to underprivileged children. The NYRR is trying to get kids interested in distance running.
Speaking of the Mets, they will be holding an Amazin’ Day fan festival at Citi Field on January 25. It will be a chance for fans to rub shoulders with members of the 2025 Mets as well as team alumni. Tours will be given which should include such normally off-limits to the public areas as the team clubhouses and the VIP suites on the fourth floor. The Mets held an event like this in January 2020, and

The NBA is not the only place to see professional basketball. The Long Island Nets of the G-League will once again be playing home games at the Nassau Coliseum. Fans of New York and Long Island street ball can watch some of the best playground hoop athletes compete in the new Crush Pro League which was founded by music producer Chris Lorenzo. Currently, home games are played every Sunday at the Harlem Police Athletic League Center. Hopefully, the Crush Pro League will expand into Queens and Long Island soon.
Long Island native Bob Gutkowski remains one of the most beloved sports executives of all-time. The former president of Madison Square Garden has just written his autobiography titled
“Gut Punch.” Gutkowski recalls his days as an NBC page, as well as reliving the 30th anniversary of that magic 1994 season when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, while the Knicks made it to the NBA Finals. He also provides plenty of behind-thescenes MSG stories such as how Knicks president Dave Checketts refused to pay a $10,000 travel bill incurred by then-head coach Pat Riley because he gave his players a one-day vacation in Lake Tahoe. This is a fun read.

You must give the Jets and Giants credit for doing their best to make sure their fans enjoy 1PM games in 2025 because there is no way television networks are going to want to show their games in primetime or the late Sunday afternoon national windows. It seems certain Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, and his Big Blue counterpart, Daniel Jones, will not be playing in MetLife Stadium in 2025.
Congratulations to the New York Liberty for not just winning their first WNBA title, but for getting traditional male sports fans to care about women’s basketball. Of course, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese had something to do with that as well.

SECOND CITY COMEDY FEST AT BROOKLYN OUTPOST
Following the successful launch of The Second City New York earlier this year, the iconic comedy institution is once again raising the bar. Building on the legacy of its renowned Chicago and Toronto siblings, the Brooklyn outpost is entering an exciting new chapter with a prime spot in the 2024 New York Comedy Festival.
The Second City New York’s highly anticipated debut at the 2024 New York Comedy Festival will showcase 20+ guest performances through Sunday, November 17th. From high-energy improv to hysterical stand-up, the festival’s schedule showcases The Second City’s signature mix of classic formats and fresh, boundary-pushing experiments. For the schedule of New York Comedy Festival performances at The Second City New York, details can be found on their website.
Over the years, the music scene changed drastically and other forms of entertainment took away from live club music.
Fast forward to 2022. Good Times, which I started on April Fool’s Day in 1969, was now 53 years old. The scene was splintered. In the old days, it was the cover bands vs. the original bands. Today it’s the tribute bands vs. the original bands. Some things never change.
Some people say there’s nothing going on today, but these people must live in caves. The latest issue of Good Times had 425 show listings for one month.
Today is the 49th Anniversary of the release of the Eat A Peach Album on Capricorn Records. Little known fact: The album was named after an interview in Good Times Magazine with Duane. (check Wikipedia). Duane was asked, “How do you feel about the peace movement?” and he answered flippantly, “Every time I go back to Georgia, I eat a peach for peace. I thought this was a great quote and blew it up big as an out take. Some time later, Capricorn contacted Good Times, told us this was one of Duane’s favorite interviews, and could they use it as the name of their forthcoming album. The rest is rock history.
So, in 2022 I dusted off my idea from 1979, 43 years later, and The Long Island Music Business Organization was born, a Chamber of Commerce for music businesses on Long Island. The timing must have been spot on, it’s been an immediate success, and we’ve held half a dozen meetings for our members.
This past May, LIMBO, as it’s lovingly known, staged The Great Guitar, Musical Instrument and Audio Show in Freeport. It was a huge success drawing nearly 60 booths of musical instrument merchants and a big turnout of music lovers. The next one is scheduled for May 3, 2025.
And now, on November 19th, we have The Legends of Long Island Music Awards, honoring 40 music businesses and individuals. These are people who have devoted their lives to the love of music and Long Island. A few have been doing it for over 40 years. The big event, to take place at the beautiful Bayview on The Nautical Mile, Freeport, will have the royalty of Long Island music present. Some honorees haven’t seen their counterparts in 20-30 years.
It will be a fun night, and it will be a continuation of the re-birth of Long Island Music. Be part of this re-birth. Put aside the cell, move away from that computer and youtube and come out every week to see some of the finest music anywhere.
I’m proud to have been a part of Long Island’s music scene for 55 years. I believe we have been an important part of nurturing that scene. Come join us for some great experiences you won’t forget. I know I can’t wait to see these old friends.

TESLA ‘ALL ABOUT LOVE’ EP
TESLA announced the release of their All About Love EP, featuring a special edition single on a limited collector’s 12” vinyl, available November 29th. What you will hold in your hands is a one of a kind collectors edition 12” VINYL EP that showcases TESLA’s new song “All About Love” in the three formats that TESLA the band is famously known for: ELECTRIC, ACOUSTIC, and LIVE performances. Multiple versions of this new song are presented here on this EP.
There is an electric version that shows how the band performs the song in full force, as well as two stripped down acoustic versions that showcase the dynamics of mixes. Jeff Keith’s heartfelt lyrics about sharing love can be felt and to honor TESLA’s tradition of adding an acoustic instrumental to their love ballads, Frank Hannon recorded a new classically influenced acoustic guitar solo piece titled “From The Heart” that is a nod to their 1987 hit “Love Song”. Furthermore, to present the “live in concert” element of TESLA, a rendition of “All About Love” segues into James Gang’s classic song “Walk Away”, both were recorded live at a Las Vegas concert earlier this year.
