history “My husband and I went to breakfast here on Sunday because of a recommendation of a friend. We were told the food was incredible and that it was not a well known place because most people think it’s just for the golfers or just don’t know it exists, like us. We cannot wait to go back!! The view of the golf course was incredible but didn’t compare to the view beyond all the way to Monterey. How did we not know about this place sooner? The food was just as good as the view.” Sandy B. · Santa Cruz, CA · 4/9/2013

BOARDWALK > Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Who doesn’t love thrilling rides, carnival games and yummy amusement park food? Not to mention an awesome view and location, next to the Municipal Wharf and close to Boardwalk Bowl. If you’re visiting during the summer months, be sure to experience the Boardwalk’s concert series (June 14-Aug. 30) featuring performances by Gin Blossoms, Blue Öyster Cult, Camper Van Beethoven, Y&T, Eddie Money, and more. Also check out Jump City shows on the
beach bandstand (July 7-Aug. 15) and Free Movies on the Beach (June 26-Aug. 14). More things to like: A historic carousel (see below); the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster; and the newest thrill ride: Undertow, Northern California’s only spinning coaster. Consider Neptune’s Kingdom, too—the festive game warehouse boasts a great miniature golf course. Other fun events during the year: Public Safety Officer Appreciation Day (Aug. 24), Big Kahuna Triathlon
(Sept. 8), Boardwalk Blitz Christian Youth Event (Sept. 20), the USA/Boardwalk Cheer & Dance Competition (Sept. 28-29), 43rd annual Santa Cruz Band Review (Oct. 19), Chili Cook-off (Oct. 26), Two-For-One Unlimited Rides days (Dates TBA), Clam Chowder Cook-Off (Feb. 22), and more. Looff Carousel
marini’s It’s a time-honored tradition at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk to grab a treat—or maybe five—from Marini’s, the world-famous local candy company that has the unique power to make both the young and old squeal with glee. That’s because the family-owned business makes a wide variety of sinful sweets. Here, you’ll find everything from delectable hand-dipped nut clusters and caramels, to turtles, English toffee, rocky road, chocolate-dipped strawberries, homemade fudge, caramel apples, salt water taffy, and oh, so much more. The Marini’s story began in 1905 when Victor Marini brought his family to Santa Cruz and opened the Palace Barbershop on Cooper Street and another in the old Casa del Rey Hotel near the Boardwalk. As the story goes, one day in 1915, Victor accepted a customer’s offer to buy his popcorn stand at the
The 1911 Looff Carousel is one of only a handful of carousels in the world that still features a working ring dispenser.
The Carousel is the Boardwalk’s oldest ride.
The entire carousel cost $18,000 in 1911; now, a pair of the Looff horses are valued at more than that.
Boardwalk. Eventually, Joseph Marini Sr. started working with his father at the stand, and in the decades following his father’s death, Joseph and his wife, Josephine, helped build the business. Over time, the family expanded Marini’s to include homemade salt water taffy, caramel corn, and candy apples. In the years to follow, the business was passed on to Joe Sr.’s sons, Joseph Jr. and Joel, and their wives, Carol and Kathy. Today, Joseph III, Nick, Gino and their families continue the tradition of making delectable candies from all over the world. Not sure what to try? Go for Marini’s famous ChocolateCovered Bacon— it may sound a bit odd, but the sweet and salty combination will have you begging for more. ... Just don’t tell your dentist.
Real horse hair tails add to the Looff Carousel’s charm.
It is home to 73 horses (71 jumpers and two standers) and two Roman chariots.

From burgers, to deli sandwiches, calamari, rice bowls, gyros, tacos—phew, the list just keeps going—the Boardwalk’s got it all. And, of course, those with a sweet tooth can satisfy their cravings with Texas-sized
donuts at Surf City Grill, a chocolate-dipped soft-serve cone at Carousel Cones (see photo on the left), funnel cakes topped with strawberries, deep fried Twinkies and Oreos—yes, you read that right—kettle korn, and so much more. If coffee is what you need, check out Cafe Espresso, which boasts a big menu of tasty lattes, mochas and more.

O’NEILL ack O’Neill is a living legend, and quite possibly Santa Cruz’s most famous resident. The founder of the world-renowned surf company that bears his last name, O’Neill opened up a 500-square-foot surf shop on Cowell Beach in 1959, after moving from San Francisco. Over time, that little shop evolved into a multi-million dollar empire, a fact which never ceases to amaze the now-90-year-old surf icon. The success of his company is partially due to his ability to solve two big problems within the surfing community in the early ’60s—how to keep the neoprene from tearing and how
J
to make wetsuits easier to slip on and off—with a simple solution: laminating elastic nylon jersey to the surface of the closed-cell neoprene foam. By 2010, O’Neill was the best-selling wetsuit brand in the world, as well as one of the top sportswear brands. Currently living in Pleasure Point, O’Neill has made numerous contributions to the local community, particularly in the form of the beloved O’Neill Sea Odyssey program, which teaches children about the microbiology of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary and the realities of living and endangered oceans aboard the Team O’Neill catamaran.

> kitesurfing itesurfing has become increasingly popular in Santa Cruz County, particularly because of the local beaches and the fact that its predominate wind direction is northwest, or side-on and the local coast marine layer/fog creates a very predictable wind. The kitesurfing season in Santa Cruz can be year-round,
K
but the true windy season is from April through October, according to Santa Cruz Kite Surfing, a local company that offers beginner and intermediate lessons focused on water safety and kiting methods with expert instructors. Santa Cruz is home to Caution Kites, an international kitesurfing brand, which explains why you’ll find much of the
Santa Cruz kitesurfing community flying Caution kites. That said, in Santa Cruz, kitesurfing has always been more about the surf than the kites, so you’ll find an emphasis on wave-kiting, rather than freestyle or big-air. COURTESY OF SANTA CRUZ DERBY GIRLS
Derby Girls Warriors
he Santa Cruz Derby Girls can be summed up in one word: Fierce. What started as a grassroots organization formed by a small group of women has evolved into three solid teams of take-no-prisoners skaters—the Seabright Sirens, Harbor Hellcats, and Boardwalk Bombshells—a dedicated training staff, and a junior derby program, known as the Santa Cruz Derby Groms, which coaches 42 girls, ranging from 10-17. For the uninitiated, roller derby is a high-energy contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Both teams designate a scoring player or “jammer” who scores points by lapping members of the opposite team. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong. The teams have to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer—in a sense, playing offense and defense, simultaneously. And did we mention they’re speed skating around a track at the same time? Tough stuff. One of the most entertaining aspects of the sport, however, is the skaters’ incredibly clever nicknames. The Santa Cruz Derby Girls have combined both intimidation and humor with some of theirs—Snarls Darwin, Kosher Assault, Deviled Leggs, and Rotten Weiler are just a few of our favorites.
T
anta Cruz got a little taller this year, thanks to its newest residents: the Santa Cruz Warriors. The D-League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, the Santa Cruz Warriors are one force to be reckoned with. The team finished its inaugural season in town at the end of April with a record of 32-18, and 4-2 in the postseason to reach the championship. They set a few D-League records, too, including single-season marks for total rebounds, lowest opponent field-goal percentage and total defensive rebounds. If you’ve never been to a D-League game, don’t let the name fool you—these guys mean business. Often called up to the NBA, D-League players always bring their A-game to the court, and in Santa Cruz, that means games at Kaiser Permanente Arena in downtown are high-energy, loud and intense. Competition is top-notch, and the Santa Cruz Warriors have proven in their first season that they are up to the challenge. The best part about Santa Cruz Warriors games? They’re enjoyable for the whole family. Attendees can munch on local snacks from the concession stands, including cookies from Pacific Cookie Company and treats from Marini’s Candies, cheer their hearts out, and participate in fun (and hilarious) half-time games. The 2013-14 season kicks off in November. Go Warriors!

s you’re exploring Santa Cruz County and its surrounding areas, you may recognize some of the filming locations for Blockbuster hits, like Gerard Butler’s latest surf-drama, Chasing Mavericks. Shot in and around Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, the film tells the story of Jay Moriarity, a young surfer from Pleasure Point, and his mentor Frosty Hesson. If you find yourself in the Pleasure Point neighborhood, which is also widely recognized as one of the finest surfing spots on the West Coast, keep an eye out for locales featured in the film, including Pleasure Pizza, then watch area surfers conquer the waves. If you’re visiting the Harvey West area of Santa Cruz, you can stroll through eight miles of trails in Pogonip. There, you’ll find the clubhouse where the 1987 vampire flick, The Lost Boys, starring Kiefer Sutherland, was filmed. The amusement park scenes in that film were also shot at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. In addition to The Lost Boys, The Boardwalk was featured in the Dirty Harry sequel Sudden Impact, Harold and Maude and Dangerous Minds. Up at UC Santa Cruz, you may recognize some of the filming locations for the 1995 film Glory Daze, starring Ben Affleck and Alyssa Milano. The film tells the story of five friends who share a house while attending art school at UCSC, and was partially shot in Porter College.
Lights, Camera, Action If you’re in the mood for a movie, there are several options in town. For Hollywood blockbusters, head to Cinema 9 downtown, CineLux in Scotts Valley and Capitola, or Green Valley Cinema in Watsonville. Fans of indie flicks will appreciate the selection at the Del Mar, Nickelodeon and Aptos Twin. And, if you’re visiting in May, don’t miss the Santa Cruz Film Festival.

The Mystery Spot f you’ve driven anywhere in Santa Cruz or its surrounding areas, you’ve undoubtedly seen cars sporting The Mystery Spot’s infamous bright yellow bumper sticker. But what exactly is this “Mystery Spot”? Discovered in 1939 by a group of surveyors and opened to the public in 1940, The Mystery Spot is a gravitational anomaly located in the redwood forest, just outside of Santa

Cruz. In essence, it is a circular area around 150 feet, or 46 meters, in diameter, which causes visitors to question what they think they know about gravity, perspective and height. Many theories exist—including a few that involve a spacecraft or carbon dioxide—but whatever is happening at this quirky tourist attraction, you can bet on scratching your head at least once or twice. The tour itself
takes about 45 minutes and is enjoyable for the whole family. Also check out the 30-minute hiking trail, which winds through a eucalyptus grove and under enormous redwoods. Note: The Mystery Spot frequently sells out its tours, so purchasing advance tickets online is recommended. 465 MYSTERY SPOT ROAD, SANTA CRUZ, 831-423-8897, MYSTERYSPOT.COM
UC Santa Cruz COURTESY OF ROARING CAMP RAILROADS
UCSC, or the “City on a Hill”—also the name of its student newspaper—was founded in 1965, and is recognized for being a modern research university with a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. With a total undergraduate student population of 15,945 and a graduate student population of 1,509, UCSC students make up a big chunk of the local population. For fun facts on the university, we looked to the school’s infamous mascot: the banana slug.
Five UCSC alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes.
Humans first arrived on what is now the campus 12,000-16,000 years ago.
Roaring Camp n honor of its 50th anniverary, Roaring Camp Railroads is hosting numerous family-fun events—including historic reenactments, music festivals, themed rides and more—all yearround, for visitors to enjoy. Run by mother-daughter team, cofounder Georgiana Clark and CEO Melani Clark, Roaring Camp Railroads has been offering scenic steam train rides and giving visitors a taste of local history with its recreated 1880s mill town for decades. Two separate lines, both offering views of stunning California terrain, including rare, old-growth redwood forests, depart daily from Roaring Camp Railroads, and take passengers from the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, or to the summit of Bear Mountain. In honor of Roaring Camp’s birthday celebration, this summer, families

are invited to attend Roaring Camp’s free heritiage events, during which visitors can see an old-fashioned printing press in action, witness a blacksmith demonstration, learn about candle making, hear a presentation by an expert steam engineer, pan for gold, hear live music, take old-time photos, and even meet a few costumed characters. Also take note of the Independence Day Family Celebration (July 4), the Moonlight Train Dinner Party (July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 14, Oct. 19), and the kid-favorite Day Out With Thomas (July 26-28, Aug. 2-4), during which families can take a ride aboard Thomas the Tank Engine and enjoy themed entertainment. Keep up with all of the fun things going on at Roaring Camp Railroads by visiting its website. All aboard! 5401 GRAHAM HILL ROAD, FELTON, 831-335-4484, ROARINGCAMP.COM
Grateful Dead fans can now visit Dead Central, a large archive of Grateful Dead memorabilia, in the University Library.
In 2000, UCSC researchers were the first to assemble the DNA sequence of the human genome and make it publicly available.
For years, UCSC was known as “Uncle Charlie’s Summer Camp”: a school where professors didn’t give grades, cars weren’t allowed on campus, and left-leaning students would forage for mushrooms, kiss banana slugs and dance beneath the full moon.
