Our choices weave their future THE 2010 GOODWEAVE RUG SOURCEBOOK

It takes thousands of knots to make a beautiful rug. And another one to make sure a child didn’t weave it. Look for the human knot on the GoodWeave label, your best assurance that a rug is child-labor-free. TM

Photo credits in order of appearance: Kelly Kinnunen, NEED magazine; Carini Lang; Odegard, Inc.; and G. Coles Christensen. All rug photos courtesy of the companies whose designs are featured on pages 4 through 14.

Hundreds of thousands of children are illegally employed within the handmade rug industry. Your choices weave their future. In the pages that follow, you'll find an exceptionally broad range of industry-leading rug companies that share one thing: a commitment to GoodWeave (formerly known as RugMark). When you buy a GoodWeave certified rug, you know it is made on a loom that is independently monitored to ensure that only adult artisans crafted it—and every GoodWeave purchase helps get kids off looms and into schools. To find out more, visit GoodWeave.org.

A message from Betty Wasserman, interior designer and board member of GoodWeave USA, the nonprofit organization behind the GoodWeave certification: Even though many of us don't realize it, we as designers have a choice to make every time we recommend a rug to a client: will we fight child labor or will we perpetuate it? I've been a designer for nearly 15 years, and I'm still amazed at how easy, and yet so incredibly powerful, that choice is. Choosing a GoodWeave certified rug doesn't mean any extra work for me. I still have the full range of style, color, size and

price options I need to serve my clients. But that one simple choice has allowed GoodWeave to free thousands of children from the looms and provide them with the education they need to embark on a new life. Making that choice is an incredible feeling – and now you have the power to make it too. Together, we can wipe out child labor in the handmade rug industry once and for all.

The next time you need to source a rug, use this book as your gateway to the 70 companies that produce GoodWeave certified rugs. Visit GoodWeave.org to search a database of nearly 1,500 GoodWeave showrooms and retailers carrying their designs.

"Through sourcing GoodWeave rugs, interior designers have the opportunity to give children back their childhoods. We can make a difference while offering our clients a finely made carpet that is easier to sell because of the positive story behind it."

On the following pages, you’ll find sample designs of 30 featured North American rug companies producing GoodWeave certified rugs.
