YOU CHANGE LIVES! Because of you, people are receiving the help they need! They are finding a job to support themselves, attaining credentials toward higher wages, and receiving help for themselves or family members with special needs. When you donate your clothing, household goods, time, or make a financial contribution to Goodwill Easterseals, you provide employment to an individual with a disability, give hope to a teen seeking that first job, and provide opportunity to a senior upgrading skills to return to the workforce. When you shop in our stores, you are helping very young children and their parents work together to make their school years (and all their years) a great success. All along the journey, you are providing learning, earning, and real help to people in need, with the confidence of knowing that 91 cents of every dollar is being spent directly on services. You are a ray of hope and a hand up to a better life for thousands of people living on the Gulf Coast who benefit from connecting with Goodwill Easterseals.

The Mobile County Recycling Center, is owned by the Mobile County Commission and operated by Goodwill Easterseals of the Gulf Coast. Through this partnership, over 2.75 million pounds of waste was processed in 2016, a 63% increase from 2015 total. An average of 375 cars a day passed through the facility, for an annual total of 121,152. In addition to recycling, Goodwill Easterseals partnered with local schools, to provide 1,300 hours of training opportunities for students with disabilities. As part of our mission to educate the community about the benefits of recycling, nearly 400 additional school children particpated in field trips where they received hands-on experience in the sorting process. Almost 300 volunteers have provided more than 3,500 hours of their time to the daily operations. Community Service Workers also provided nearly 2,800 hours of work at the Recycling Center.

A good job. An education. A hand to hold. A better life. Because of you. • Leonard, who never thought he would work again after being laid off at age 61, is now earning a paycheck. • Michelle now has a GED and a better job to support her children. • Crystal has left behind isolation and depression thanks to the friendships she has formed in her adult day program. • Carey persevered with her parent educator to get her son, Elijah, ready to shine in kindergarten. Their lives are better thanks to you - your gifts of goods, shopping, time, and money - in short, your generosity. Because you were there to help, your neighbors have hope and a future full of promise. For all you do, we thank you! Yours in service, Peter D’Olive, Board Chair

4 LILLIAN COCKRELL

When she experienced a devastating medical event that left her blind and unable to walk, Lillian’s former career as a social worker became unmanageable. “I became a recluse. I was afraid I might never leave my home again,” Lillian said. After several eye surgeries and a lot of recovery time, Lillian regained her sight and movement, but she had to start her career from scratch. Goodwill Easterseals welcomed her into the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), for people over age 55 wanting to get back into the workforce. At age 73, Lillian had to look deep inside herself to discover what she had to offer the world. “It was the structure of the program that made the difference for me,” she stated. “I received computer classes, software that helped me manage my fluctuating vision needs, and help narrowing my career options.” As a result of the training and encouragement, Lillian has started her own company, “Lily Rose Star and Friends Storytime”. Her stories have been picked up by a publishing company, and are expanding into audio books and animated series. Now at age 75, Lillian Cockrell is just getting started.

BARRETT EVANS

Julie Evans could not put her finger on what was wrong with her son, Barrett. He simply was not talking. That’s when the road to discovery began. “I tried several things,” Julie said. “We went to the pediatrician, did speech therapy, extra play dates—anything I could think of that might help.” Barrett struggled in a typical daycare setting. “They didn’t know how to handle behavior that was outside the norm—it was just too rigid for him, and he couldn’t communicate his needs,” she explained. Finally, a friend told Julie that her child was making great progress at Goodwill Easterseals. Julie decided to check it out. The difference was striking. “Within three weeks, Barrett went from nonverbal to holding conversations with us. We were amazed.” The smaller class size, more individual attention, better behavior management and the right therapy, changed everything. Julie said, “He has developed his own identity. An unexpected joy for me has been finding out what a sweet, thoughtful heart he has. He couldn’t show us that before. I feel like we are making up for lost time.”

YURE DIXON

The only thing stopping Yure Dixon from getting a job with benefits was not having a high school diploma. His wife, Donna, carried him on her insurance, but it was eating up half their income. He found a Goodwill Easterseals GED class right near his home in Grand Bay, so he signed up. “If it hadn’t been convenient to Grand Bay, if I’d had to pay for the classes, it might not have happened,” Yure admitted. He struggled with Reading and Math. “I had to learn Algebra from the beginning!” he said. With patience and encouragement from his instructor, Yure made progress. “I’m glad my teacher was there. She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.” Two years later, Yure passed the final test, gaining his high school equivalency. He went straight to the school system, and applied for a job at the same school where his wife worked. This time, he got the job AND the benefits. “Goodwill Easterseals played a major part in my whole family’s financial stability, ” Yure stated, “Having this GED opened doors that were closed to me. No one can take this education from me now. It’s mine.”
