Preparing People for Success in a Tech-Powered World

Vision Our vision is that every person has the opportunity to learn, work, and thrive in all aspects of life.

Mission To achieve our vision, we are committed to dismantling racism and advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion so we can help people reach their fullest potential through education, job placement, and career pathway services. We do our work with great gratitude for the community donations, purchases, and partnerships that make our mission possible.

NOW, MORE THAN EVER … We need to rebuild our community. We need to help people rebuild their lives. The coronavirus pandemic has created new depths of suffering and tragedy for the most vulnerable people in our community. Seniors. Youth. Families in Poverty. People with Disabilities. People Experiencing Homelessness. Military Veterans. And, across all segments of our population, people who are Black, Indigenous, or other People of Color. For these folks and so many more, the path forward is employment. A job. A career. A step toward a better life for themselves and their families.

Yet, most jobs require technology skills that many people do not have. The coronavirus pandemic showed us all how critical technology is to our daily lives—for communicating with friends and family, for accessing goods and services, and for finding and maintaining work. The lack of access to technology and technology skills is widening the gap between poverty and prosperity and this gap will continue to grow for our most vulnerable citizens.

Power Up Goodwill According to the Washington Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board, At Goodwill, we are committed to closing this gap by creating opportunities for the most vulnerable members of society—through developing a robust set of technologybased skills training, education, job placement, and career services. To do this, we are launching the Power Up Goodwill Centennial Campaign to raise $5 million for technology skills training programs that will continuously align with the ever-evolving presence of technology in the workplace. Now and in the future, Power Up Goodwill will equip people with the skills they need to learn and work in an increasingly technologybased world. This can’t happen a moment too soon.

“An increasing number of jobs now call for a higher level of skills and education, and workers must maintain pace with these changes or risk being left behind. New jobs are being created each day, and the skills required within existing occupations are increasingly fluid as technology changes. Training needs to bolster workers against the tide of technological innovation in the workplace, providing them with in-demand skills for quality jobs that provide family wages, personal fulfillment, and opportunities for advancement.”

Indeed, in Washington, nearly half of all occupations could be automated by adapting to technology in the very near future. This is particularly worrisome for people in lower-skilled, lower-paying jobs, which are at the greatest risk of automation.

The People We Serve

25%

Approximately 1.8 million Washington residents (25%), including 500,000 Live in households children, live 200% below poverty in households that are 200% below the federal poverty line. This number is expected to grow as the cost of living rises throughout our region. Moreover, the experience of poverty is not equally shared: in Washington, 47% of Blacks, 50% of Indigenous People, and 53% of Latinos live in near poverty, poverty or deep poverty as opposed to 24% of whites.

50% of all jobs in Washington pay less than $20/hour

Meanwhile, 50% of all jobs in Washington pay less than $20 per hour.

Technology training is critical to helping people learn to work with technology, instead of being displaced by it.

In just the next few years, 70% of projected job openings in Washington will require post-secondary education. Yet today, nearly three-quarters of a million adult Washington citizens under age 45 lack education beyond high school.

70%

of jobs will require post-secondary education

And, it’s not just about gaining job-specific skills. There’s growing demand for advanced cognitive and emotional skills across all industries. Lifelong learning and competencybased certifications are needed to help people apply themselves to a variety of jobs and careers throughout their lifetime.

The People We Serve Mario Anzaldo, Electronics Technician & Supervisor, U.S. Army

ion is that erson has portunity to work, and n all aspects life.

Facing medical retirement after seven years in the U.S. Army, Mario Anzaldo began pursuing training and educational opportunities to prepare him for civilian life. He completed multiple degrees and earned a certified electronics technician designation. Knowing he also needed to improve his computer skills, Mario contacted Goodwill’s Veteran Services program and enrolled in the Digital Skills course. With ongoing support of the Goodwill team, Mario earned his Microsoft 365 Fundamentals certification and is on course to complete certification for Microsoft Dynamics and Azure. Said Mario, “In today’s world it is imperative to have the digital skills to be successful. And it will only continue to be more so.”

Jaci Sweet, Healthcare Professional Jaci loved her job in the home health field, but when a major staff reduction left her out of work she recognized she needed technical knowledge to advance in her field. As Jaci said, “I didn’t have the computer skills to work behind a desk and do the managerial side of the job.”

PARTNERSHIP When you give to Goodwill, you are part of a collective effort with one purpose: to help people transform their lives for the better. We believe in the strength of our community partnerships – employers, other nonprofits, social services agencies, and our generous donors. We work hand-in-hand to share expertise and resources that, together, provide the all-inclusive support crucial to every person’s long-term success in life.

To learn what she needed to become a qualified candidate, Jaci enrolled in Goodwill’s Microsoft Computer & Office Skills Training Program. She gained vital knowledge and secured an advanced position in her field, which gave her the financial stability she was seeking for herself and her two children. “Goodwill wants to train you for a career path – not just a job,” Jaci said.

My Story. My Hope.

Calvin Crawford, Goodwill Digital Skills Training Instructor After holding down multiple jobs and spending too much time away from home, I knew I needed to set a positive example for my children so I made the decision to find more stable employment. With the help of the Department of Social and Health Services, I joined the WorkFirst program where I was introduced to the team at Goodwill. I enrolled in the Computer & Office Skills Training Course and seven years later I am still part of Goodwill, but now as the Digital Skills Training Instructor. During my personal journey, I have not had a feeling of I can’t, I have only felt that I can. My experience has built my confidence and given me the courage to try new things. My family and my future are more secure thanks to what I have learned over the years. As an instructor, I know how important it is for people to have digital literacy. Having access to technology and digital skills training are essential to success. Technology has always been the future and I believe that it will continue to grow and shape our lives. My work at Goodwill makes me feel a part of something that is helping change the community. With your support, we can continue to make an impact for years to come. I hope you will consider making a gift to the Goodwill Power Up Centennial Campaign. Together we can help people transform their lives.
