Christmas Ale Your friends are good people. The best. When Christmas comes remember that. Beer says love. And a beer that you pick personally— let’s say a dark, wintry stout suited to luscious beef roasts and crème brulee—shows you care enough to be choosy, to find a beer worthy of your loved one. Make sure to take the time. Craft your relationships with care and remember that good people drink good beer. The best people drink craft beer made in small batches by craftsmen with geek-level interest in quality and selection of ingredients. Craft beer gets as dark and inky as a Squamish sky come the winter months. I recommend the Pothole Filler Stout, which is made by local pioneers at Squamish’s own Howe Sound Brewing. Blackstrap molasses, chocolate, and licorice notes fill this flip-top, potstopper—which is resealable, reusable, and a great gift for the friend who values green packaging. For the vegan on your list, try UK brewer Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout. The Stonecutter Scotch Ale, made by Renaissance of New Zealand tastes like eating caramels by the woodstove. Drink these beers in solid glasses with solid friends. Be merry.

DOWNTOWN SQUAMISH
When you’re sitting fireside with your most cherished during the holidays eating nuts and cheese and shortbread, slapping your knees while your cheeks redden, remember that smallscale can be big. Taking the time to choose only the finest is a principle that applies to giving, friendship, and beermaking. It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to come at a great expense. It just has to be good.

the Magic
OF TRADITIONS Whatever your traditions, and however they evolve, it`s the family time and childhood memories that are most precious. With the holidays approaching I’ve spent a lot of time preparing for the big shopping rush. I’ve thought a lot about traditions, and how differently people celebrate. Many Christmas traditions revolve around faith and food. Others are influenced by generosity and the changing times. I’m struck by how my own family traditions have evolved. As a young girl growing up in Squamish, traditions included those from the families of both my parents. I have fond memories of Christmas preparations; decorating the tree, setting up the nativity scene, baking shortbread, reading “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”, a pot of bubbling Tortiere filling on the stove for the pies my French Canadian mother would make. Christmas Eve was always the time for opening one gift, new PJ’s to wear that night. Some years my mom woke us, after returning from Midnight Mass, to enjoy a feast and open gifts as her family had done. Other years we waited until the next morning for Santa’s surprises. Regardless of when we opened the gifts, my dad would customarily pipe up, “Now, hold on, we don’t need to open everything at once. Why don’t we save some for the afternoon?”. He never, ever got his way. Since becoming a mother myself I have continued many of the traditions. After all, what would Christmas be without a batch of Grandma Towers’ scrumptious Sugar Cookies (or my father telling me, again, that his mother never iced them). I’ve also incorporated traditions from my husband’s family and those of close friends. But despite the many sweets of the season I have

made one change for the sake of healthier teeth; a switch from the advent calendars of my youth to one’s with a small toy each day. A few weeks ago my children asked when their Elf, Losée, (Elf on the Shelf) would be back. This is a recent tradition for my family. Last year the kids had so much fun catching this spy from Santa in compromising situations that it challenged my husband and I to come up with some pretty creative ideas. I was amazed to watch their imaginations at work and loved encouraging their capacity to believe. Someday I will no doubt repeat another family tradition - the nameless gift under the tree, presented to one child to open only to have it snatched back and given to their sibling. All because mom bought and wrapped it so long ago that she can’t remember who it’s for. Love you mom! So take the time to focus on what`s most important to you and make it magical for your children. Merry Christmas Everyone! 38090 Cleveland Ave 604 892 5567

8 WAYS
TO TRULY ENJOY
CHRISTMAS Toss up the Christmas lights and throw on some carols, but nothing says Christmas like the smell of a fresh cut evergreen… make it easy on yourself, grab a scented candle or a smelly Christmas soap and Voila!
1
If you see the perfect gift grab it now! Don’t put yourself in the position of scrambling the week before Christmas when all that’s left for your favourite uncle Charlie is a pink sparkly moustache comb.
19
DOWNTOWN SQUAMISH
5 6
Bring a camera for this one. You’re never
too old to sit on Santa’s lap. Have something to talk about for next Christmas.
2
Take in a Christmas show. Whether
Winter activities.
Snowshoe, skating, cross country skiing or going for a sleigh ride are all great ways to work up an appetite!
it’s your child’s Christmas performance extraordinaire, the Nutcracker or Between Shifts Theater performing A Christmas Carol, nothing will give you that warm and fuzzy feeling like a good holiday show!
3
If you’re still one of ‘those’ who still writes Christmas cards start now.
An essay is not required! One touching sentence will suffice. There’s no better time to reach out to your long lost cousin (you never know if they’re going to win the lottery someday, it’s better to be in their good books).
4
38104 Cleveland Ave 604 815 4483
No stress shopping.
It’s time to sit down with family and reminisce about the good old days. Grab a
glass (or more) of mulled wine and have a giggle about Christmas’ past.
The Heart of the Holidays
7
This brings us to FOOD! My Mother
always says “there’s no limit at Christmas”. It’s the only time I don’t get the evil eye when going up for thirds!
8
Make it easy on yourself. Start your
baking, start ticking things off your Christmas list; allow yourself the time to enjoy your friends and family. Snuggle by the fire place with some eggnog. And, don’t forget to laugh.

Made With
LOVE & BUTTER by Anna Davies
Butter + flour + sugar = done. Simple simple! In the spirit of Christmas, I thought orange zest was appropriate & lovely. Rubbing the zest into the sugar before it is creamed into the butter allows the zest to release its fragrance & flavor more than if you simply just mixed it into the batter at the end of the mixing process.
ORANGE ZEST SHORTBREAD Makes approximately 24 bars, depending on size. 1 1/2 cup (3 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pan 3 cups all-purpose flour 1-1 1/4 teaspoon coarse sea salt 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2-2 tablespoon orange zest 2/3 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips or chunks, melted over a double boiler (optional)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Place parchment paper in a 13 x 9 cake pan, or grease with butter. Sift together flour and salt in a small bowl. In a large bowl, with an electric mixer on medium, cream butter until fluffy, 3 to 5 minutes. Rub orange zest into sugar until fragrant. Add sugar, and continue to beat until very light in color and fluffy, scraping down sides of bowl as necessary, about 2 minutes more. Add flour mixture, and beat on low, scraping bowl if necessary, until flour is just incorporated and dough sticks together when squeezed. Pat dough into prepared pan. Use a paring knife to score dough into bars; prick all over in even intervals with a wooden skewer or fork. Bake until firm in the center and just starting to color, about 50 minutes. Transfer pan to a wire rack, and let cool completely. Melt chocolate in a stainless steel bowl over a small saucepan of boiling water. Drizzle melted chocolate over shortbread with a fork until desired design or amount is applied. Once cooled a bit, cut into bars.

Wiiihn-tehr. The word tastes dry. Sandy grit on my tongue, as I watch snowflakes fall for the first time in fifteen years of life. Winter; what an absurd concept, that the constant heat I’d once been swaddled in would slide away from me as loose silk on slim shoulders will. Though I am not a foreigner to an arid world, the word tastes dry. An unfortunate chant moves through this land that starts in snow and frozen strands of ribbon river twisting on the water’s dead, silent command. In one moment I realize that the California sun, the sun that permeates December chills and February fogs can not reach me here in the heart of Squamish. Even in the sun, it is cold. An unfortunate chant moves through this land that starts in snow and frozen strands of ribbon river twisting on the water’s dead, silent command. I pull at my arms like the sleeves of a too long sweater and wrap them around my body, but goose flesh is my new dogging companion. “Win-ter...Win-ter,” the ground slushes, as if solely to remind me that it is snow - not mud - I feel caking boots strange over my unwelcoming toes. “Winter,” ten toes hiss at me in their silent way, claustrophobic and angry at the suffocation they suffer in three inch thick socks. An unfortunate chant moves through this land that starts in snow and frozen strands of ribbon river twisting on the water’s dead, silent command.

SILENCE OF WINTER
by Karla Cruz
not so much winter as the come and go of rain and snow and cloud and grey grey grey wonderland existing in pockets of down filled coats gloves forgotten at home fingers finding warmth in others breath, a visible reminder of how good it is to breathe in the exhilaration of air damp asphalt under heavy boots a clear night stars moon the bright of snow reflection of streetlight inhale sanctity
The HAllelujahs by Jude Goodwin
Tonight I replaced the bulbs on an old porch string of lights, the deep colours lit up the garden again maybe the 60th time for me, and every year I cup my hands around each the red, the yellow, the green and the deep blue. Hello again I whisper. Will there come a time when I won’t want this? Will there come a time when I won’t put up the creche, or hang the snowflakes, when we won’t debate over who cooks the turkey and how much money to spend on each other, won’t stand in the freezing park waiting for the Christmas Train or race from one venue to another so as not to miss a single song or nativity, when we won’t unwrap the old carol books and lamely find their chords on the out of tune piano, won’t paint sparkle glue on the holiday cards and twist pipe cleaners into skiing snow men, when we won’t reunite with old old friends, watch black and white movies on the television and groan every time we hear Frosty thumpity thump thumping over the hills, when I won’t wake up and hear the hallelujahs, sometimes in the rain or the river winds, sometimes muffled by a blanket of new snow, the hallelujahs coming from the radio and the coffee pot and the icicles dripping outside our windows and the sun, the hallelujahs and the sun on Christmas morning.
