CAPELLA, SENTOSA
ON THE GOO by ahnanchana srichamara
For years, Michael Bierut led graduate graphic design students at the Yale School of Art in a workshop that he called “The 100 Day Project.” The premise for the class was simple: each student chose one action to repeat every day for 100 days. For example, one student made a poster in under a minute every day for 100 days; another danced in public every day and made a video; another student, Rachel Berger, picked a paint chip
WHAT WILL YOU DO? out of a bag and responded to it in writing for 100 days. In 2014, a group of students banded together and decided to share their projects on Instagram, tagging images with #The100DayProject. People of all ages joined in, and it was incredible! Those who participated were empowered by the accountability of doing the project alongside others in a very public way on Instagram. The project gives anyone (young & old, artist and non-artist) a framework and the permission to be creative. It challenges you to dig deep into your creative reserves, to rely on your readiness to work in order to achieve creative breakthrough. It can be an end to procrastination, and the development of resilience. It takes a lot of energy, and yet the rewards can resonate for a long time after the 100th Day is over. You do not need to have any prerequisite
creative or artistic skill to take part in the project. You can participate from anywhere in the world. Across the globe, the project caught attention of a young designer from New Zealand, Emma Rogan, after reading about Beirut’s class at Yale. Emma’s project focused on expressing the negative thoughts and countering them with positivity, and by using pencil she sketch them out to bring playfulness in her design. Word on her project was shared across New Zealand, and in no time the Kiwis were on board too. The 100 Days Project is a celebration of process that encourages everyone to participate in 100 days of making. The great surrender is the process; showing up day after day is the goal. For the 100-Day Project, it’s not about fetishizing finished products—it’s about the process.

POP!
to complete the 100 days in late August/ September WHY | Cause its fun! Lily does things in my place- sleep on lily pads, makes kueh her bed, sleep in a succulent leaf. I would love to do all that too! Its like she escapes in my place! And when this is completed I’d love to find a way to exhibit all 100 of them, and also get them printed for use as coasters! (of course im not gonna use the coasters with my original drawings haha) HOW TO DO ABOUT IT | hmmm no planning, just draw? It does require quite a bit of discipline to keep it going. And keep drawing!
WHAT | Mainly paper cutting for now but hopefully anything about paper in the future. WHEN | After one submission of Chengdu in June. WHY | Endin asked me to join and I wanted to see how long I can keep this going , as my enthusiasm usually lasts for quite short period. And yes I found the hashtag”100dayproject” cool and wanted to use it. HOW TO DO ABOUT IT | Just like drawing, but with a cutting knife instead of pen. It’s not too late for you to get on board. Pick up a project and post it on instagram and hashtag #googaspace. 100 days may be a tough number to keep up with, but we are patiently following your process! What’s the best design secret you’ve ever learned? Jaya Ibrahim said, “the tricks to the choice of fabric and colour are that if we only choose tone on tone colours, it will not be attractive for most people. So we introduce something that is wrong, because unless there is something wrong in the design, you will never understand the good of it or you don’t catch the right things if it’s not something that is a little bit wrong” What’s one question you like to be asked more often? Did you just lose weight? (Don’t we all want that question)
