The Newsletter Director Speaketh This Month: Podcasting By Todd Daniel, todddan@me.com As mentioned in the last newsletter, if you read Maclanta
each month you’ll be taken on an incredible journey that covers all aspects of computing. This month we’re going to cover PODCASTING, which will prepare you for my presentation on September 16. What Is Podcasting?
Think of them as Internet radio shows. There’s millions of them and most are free. They cover religion, politics, hobbies, and some of the most popular ones are just mindless chatter (says something about our society). By far the best way to get them is through iTunes. Do searches and you’ll find every topic imaginable. The idea is to download them on your iPod and listen to them on the bus to work, while at the gym, or maybe while doing yard work (or maybe when your spouse is talking to you). Podcasting is a new phenomenon that had its birth in the sci-fi world. Sci-fi enthusiasts used podcasting for audio books and talk shows. One of the great podcasting pioneers is a guy named Evo Terra. He responded to one of my emails once — I didn’t wash my keyboard for a week. How About Mac Podcasts?
There’s plenty of Mac-specific podcasts out there. By far my two favorites are MacCast and Macworld. I’ve tried about six other Mac shows but they usually degenerate into rambling chatter and suddenly I feel like I’m at my in-laws on Thanksgiving Day. MacCast features host Adam Christianson who does a fantastic job. He’s one of those people who can never be boring.
Even though Macworld has a larger staff and more resources, it is still number two in my book. Todd Daniel Christopher Breen is a great writer Newsletter Director and one of my heroes, but a tal- todddan@me.com ented author does not necessarily make a talented podcaster. In other words, he comes off as a little monotone and stiff on the air. But he is usually joined by other Macworld staff members and guests, which saves his show. Can I Create My Own Podcast?
Whatever you passion is, start a podcast and soon you’ll have a loyal following. I ran an environmental podcast in 2006. I was just starting to get fan mail when I had to give it up due to long hours at work. I’ve met some fascinating people at AMUG. We have a member who organizes ping-pong tournaments, another member that has a vintage bus memorabilia business, and another member who operates a rabbit farm. Now all three of these topics would make a great podcast! At the September AMUG I’ll show you how to create a podcast with just a microphone, laptop, and Apple’s Garageband. The last two versions of Garageband contain templates for producing a show, which really makes it easy. During the meeting you’ll learn about jingles, bed music, dubbing, and other fun stuff. I’ll also demo another program called Audio Hijack, which allows you to essentially capture any sound that comes out of your computer. To do phone interviews you can use a combination of Skype and Audio Hijack. Once you make a podcast you need to host it from somewhere. I use iWeb, but the most popular hosts are TypePad,
My two favorite Podcasts - MacCast and MacWorld. Each week I anxiously await for the new feeds to arrive in iTunes. Then I download them and it’s off to the gym!

Your AMUG Board in Action ...
A snapshot of the August Board meeting
Your AMUG board meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Mellow Mushroom on Peachtree and 26th streets, very close to Macquarium. Members-at-large are always welcomed and encouraged to come. Our meetings are casual and we always enjoy some great pizza as we manage and discuss club business. Right now most of our board members are holding two jobs and we could really use more help. If you wish to join us, and maybe consider taking on a position, please contact any AMUG board member. We’d love to have you on board! right: President Mike Henigan, Vice President Christina Wellman, and Secretary Wendell Dillon

Meeting Reports
General meetings, SIGs, and more... August General Meeting - Photoshop Elements We had a nice turnout of 30+ people at our August 19 meeting, which was led by our ever-talented Christina Wellman. But first Lawrence Sharp conducted a Q&A session. Afterwards, Christina took the stage and dazzled us with the power of Photoshop Elements 6.0. One of the main examples she used was for a pizza delivery brochure that she helped produce. She showed how you can manipulate photos to create professional-quality designs. Elements is not for the professional and does not support high-end features like Pantone colors or CMYK. But the software package is WONDERFUL for casual users who enjoy playing with images but don’t wish to climb the learning curve required by the full Photoshop. For the door prize, Christina provided rainchecks for CDs loaded with Photoshop Elements podcasts.
August Super Tuesday SIG Night The SIGs, which took place the following Tuesday (August 26), were well attended and a big hit. ◆ OS X SIG — A group of AMUGers filled a large table at the OS X SIG, led by Jay Caan. As always, Jay answered questions, amazed attendees with a few tricks, and spent time answering questions. At the end of class there was a great discussion on Doppler radar widgets. One attendee uses several widgets at different settings so that she can prepare her farm for bad weather. ◆ FileMaker Pro SIG — As the OS X SIG took place downstairs, in the theatre below there was a group of fanatical FileMaker Pro fans enjoying a great presentation given by Lee Hoong. First Lee led a Q&A session and addressed a question submitted by Todd Daniel. Todd had asked how to determine average vehicle mileage for an vehicle maintenance solution he is designing. Afterwards, the action began as Lee gave a talk on searching and filtering, using search operators, relationships/portals, and more. The group also learned how to save searches as a script, which is ideal if you have to use the same search regularly. As always, Lee amazed his students with a few clever tricks and shortcuts.
Next SIG Night: September 23
There was a nice turnout of enthusiastic AMUGers at the August 19 general meeting. Hey, that looks like the famous desktop publishing celebrity Robin Sherman in the middle.
SIG News
• Holiday Closings - There will be no SIGS in November and December due to proximity with the holidays. We will hit the ground running in January. • The FileMaker SIG will not meet in October because instructor Lee Hoong will be out of the country. Classes will resume in January. • The Switcher SIG is ready to meet pending sufficient interest. This SIG is designed for individuals who are new to the Mac world. If you are interested in signing up for this SIG contact Todd Daniel (todddan@me.com, 678-57-2052).
Wanted: New SIGs
We are always looking for new SIGs for Super Tuesday. If you are interested in forming a SIG, please contact any AMUG Board member. As the old saying goes “where two or more are willing to meet, there is a SIG.” As a SIG leader we encourage you to collect emails and send out reminders for your group. Any potential topic for a SIG will be considered by the AMUG Board. The following are examples of past SIGs. If you prefer, you can meet at a different location or even in a chatroom online. Digital Camera Page Layout Portable Computing Switchers Other possible SIGs: Movie Making, Audio, Computer Graphics, Business Users, Open Source, Web Development, iLife, Genealogy, Hardware Repair, and the list goes on!

Tiphone, Schmiphone, Hiphone Another iPhone 3G Review.... By Christina Wellman, christina@christinaworks.com Well, perhaps the iPhone story
has been done a few times already. I mentioned at our meeting that I got a new 3G phone, but I’m not sure if I spelled out all the details. Yes, I stood in line for 6 hours, but I entered the Perimeter Mall about 5 pm on Friday evening, and saw that the line wasn’t too long, but long enough that I had to take my housemate home and come back. When I got back about 6:30, the line had grown and continued to get longer after I got in it. This must be called experience... or an event. I’ve camped out for Pink Floyd tickets, but this was different. I saw babies, and families, and Moms and Dad’s taking turns taking babies to where ever babies go when they are tired of waiting in line. I met people with accents and languages from many places. All kinds of people. As we got closer to the middle of the line, people began to move the mall benches and chairs. Each person with a seat moved them closer as the line grew shorter, and then as the mall closed doors at 11:00 the security came and took the chairs away. It was funny, since all the seats in this part of the mall had migrated to the wall closest to the store. There were so many seats by this time that people stopped moving the seats closer to the store, and just moved and changed seats. My phone was activated inside the box, new SIM card and all. I didn’t get to see my phone until I synced with iTunes at home. So, am I glad I did it? Yes, the Nokia I had before was from 2002, came off of eBay. I had no contract with AT&T, but I have been using ATT service for about 8 years now, and this was an easy setup for me. I didn’t have to change my plan, I just added the Internet data plan. At this time, two updates for the phone software have
come down. I have more bars in my house than I did before. Some of the apps I downloaded have Christina Wellman been lost due to app store upgrade Vice President issues. I can just re-download christina@christinaworks.com them, but haven’t had time lately. This has to be done on my Mac, and synced over from there. Not how it should be, but somehow, if I try to upgrade my apps on the phone, it has trouble deleting the old versions, so the new ones can have a home there. I’m still a little sad about not having camcorder capabilities, but it’s okay, Most of the videos I have from past phones really aren’t very good quality anyway. And the battery still gets low in the early evening, but I have more choices about how to prevent that now, buy turning off services I am not using, like the push, Bluetooth, WIFI, etc. Yes, yes, yes ... I do love my new phone. I love being able to choose my activities in the morning as I ride on MARTA to work. Do I want to watch podcasts, listen to music and play games at the same time, or type a new email with the mail.app? I have an SOS flasher for emergencies, an app with customer services phone numbers for many hundreds of companies, book readers already loaded with books, and lots of games. Some games are two player games with two fingers on the glass in pong competition. It the iPhone right for you? That is for you to decide. I needed these services that I wasn’t able to get before, and only lately have all the companies been able to provide. Supporting our Apple is cool, but I would not have sacrificed anything I really needed for it, or messed up my plan. All I can say now is cheers. I hope you’re not tired of iPhone, because I’m definitely not.

Widgets, Widgets, and More Widgets! These widget gems are courtesy of Lesa Snider King, Enjoy! TheDailyGrind
Are you a freelancer? Do you have to keep track of hours you spend on several different projects? Do you find yourself jotting the start and end times down on a sticky note (either digital or analog), Excel spreadsheet, etc.? Do you experience a panic attack when you can’t find said sticky note or forgot to put anything into the Excel spreadsheet?! If you answered yes to any of these questions, TheDailyGrind widget might be for you. TheDailyGrind (no spaces in the name) lets you create multiple timers which you can start and stop. Each one comes with a play button for activation and the familiar 0S X Action menu sprocket. Click the sprocket icon to produce a cute little menu drawer wherein you may assign a color code to your timer, reset it, delete it altogether, or copy your precious hours to the clipboard for pasting into the invoicing tool of your choice. I’m really hoping this will help me get better at tracking my hours because, well, I suck at it. I’ll keep you posted!

Now, for the first time, you too can reap the benefits of MacGyver’s vast scientific knowledge. Download the MacGyverisms widget and learn a new trick with every press of the forward arrow. So the next time you need to conjure up some tear gas on the fly, you’ll be prepared. (Just grab the nearest bamboo pipe, and mix some ash with alcohol, of course!) Though this widget can most certainly be classified as bloody useless, you never know when it might save your hide! I mean, who knew that you could use rosary beads to focus sunlight thus triggering a slingshot?!

The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition
“You can’t free a fish from water.” No, I suppose you can’t. “Never lie too soon after a promotion.” Excellent advice! “Wounds heal but debt is forever.” True indeed! These jewels of wisdom and more can be yours for only... (oh wait, it’s free) for FREE! That’s right, just pop over to Apple’s download page and snatch up this week’s featured widget, The Rules of Acquisition. Ring any bells? Ah yes, straight from the Grand Nagus himself (dang I miss D59), this widget displays a new rule each time you pop into Dashboard (or every time you click the Ferengi insignia, or press Command + R to refresh). Just think of the possibilities! You’ll never have to hunt around for an amusing (though wise!) quote to tack onto your email signatures ever again! TIP: To close any widget without opening the Dashboard control panel, simply hold down the Option key and mouse over the widget to produce a circled X in the top left corner (as shown below). Click it once to send the widget packin’. MacGyverisms

Radar in Motion is one of several widgets that alert you of severe weather.
Radar in Motion is a Dashboard widget that grabs radar images from The Weather Channel or NOAA and displays the animation. One can access the radar for a given zip code or get a regional map. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you’re using Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it. Google Library A great free feature right under me nose... By Todd Daniel, todddan@me.com For years I’ve kept a list of favorite books on my
website, and I was just about to update it when I stumbled across another Google jewel. It was in front of me all the time, but you actually have to dive down and come back up to reach it. From your iGoogle home page click on “More” and then “Books” and then “My Library.” Totally Amazing
What you’ll find in My Library is a first-class book organizer. If you love books like I do, then you’ll discover that this application is a great way to organize your collection. To build your connection you can either find books one-by-one with Google Search or you can import a batch at a time by entering ISBN numbers. And what I always like about Google apps is that you can EXPORT your collection as well. Get Your Books Organized
How to organize your books is up to you. The Help Section provides a few examples of how other people have organized their libraries. A typical use of the system would be to catalog all the books on your bookshelves. My system is a little different. I simply created a list of books that I’ve read and another list of books I intend to read. I’ve also used the label feature to give my books such tags as “inspiring” or “life changing.” Features Galore
In addition to the labels feature, you can also rate each book with stars, add a note, and even write a review. The notes stay with your personal page, but the reviews are sent to the main Google book database and listed. But don’t worry, in public viewers can only see the nickname you give yourself and not your real or full name. When setting up your My Library page you can add a profile and picture of yourself. Once your collection is set up you can share your library by either sending out a link or getting others to subscribe via RSS feed. As an RSS subscriber, your Aunt Fufu will be alerted each time you add a new title to your collection. If you’re bored, you can go looking into other people’s collections and if you find someone with similar reading tastes you can click on the “Add To My Favorites” button.
will all then be compressed to a little chip and implanted in our brains. Okay, not there yet, but this is part of a grand Google effort to catalog millions of books. Most of the books provide a few page samples, but some are completely available online — for free!
A Few Improvements Needed
One nice thing you can do is flip between cover view and list view. But that’s about it. I’m surprised that there is no way to sort your collection. It would also be nice to provide folders where you could organize your books by general topic or some other way. Fortunately, My Library is still in beta so I’m sure they’ll be rolling out new enhancements in the near future. As a final note, I know that a lot of AMUGers use Delicious Library 2, which is an amazing program that allows you to scan your books and then the program goes out and finds a thumbnail image and information. If you want to save the $40 you can essentially do the same thing with Google’s My Library. However, keep in mind that Delicious Library allows you to catalog more than just books, like DVDs and computer games.
The Big Picture
My Library is just one feature in a much grander scheme to digitally catalog all the knowledge of humankind. This

Right now, all sales are done at cost and they’re quite affordable. You can order what you want, when you want right, on the Web. Check out the online store at: http://www.cafepress.com/amug This is a great way to publicize our club, PLUS when you wear an AMUG shirt to a meeting you receive an extra door prize ticket.
