MINNESOTASOCCER LOTS A SHOTS On the strength of their 54 shots over the weekend, Minnesota has moved into the league lead for total shots. Minnesota has 160 on the season, just ahead of second place Michigan State with 158. AND HERE’S THE APPROACH Katie Bethke continued on her stellar season last weekend, adding three more points to her total. She now has 15 career goals, 13 assists, and 43 points, leaving her just outside the top-ten all-time in each category. Bethke is just one assist shy of 10th all-time, as well as three goals and three points away from 10th place on their respective lists.
CAREER YEAR Bethke collected her sixth goal of the season on 9/20 against Montana setting a new career high for the junior. The six goals better the five she knocked in her freshman year in 2007. Also on 9/20, Bethke fired off a career high nine shots in the match, bringing her total to 38 on the season, which is just two shy of her high of 40, also set in 2007.
HOT SHOTS Bethke and Tamara Strahota are each among the Big Ten leaders in shots. Laura Heyboer of Michigan State is the leader with 40, but not far behind is Bethke with 38. Strahota checks in at sixth with 26 on the season.
BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Cat Parkhill was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 7 following her two-shutout performance on 9/4 and 9/6. Parkhill stopped all four shots she saw, playing 200:00 minutes of scoreless soccer. It was the first Big Ten honor of Parkhill's career, and the first of the season for the Golden Gophers. THE REGION’S BEST The match-ups this week will pit some of the region’s top teams against each other. The sixth ranked Golden Gophers will first match up with the seventh ranked Hawkeyes on Thursday, before meeting the fifth ranked Illini on Sunday. QUALIFYIN’ MARKS Cat Parkhill has played all 830:00 minutes this season, which means her 0.65 goals against av-

erage now qualifies for the list of the best single season marks in program history. Currently the mark stands as second best in team history, behind the record 0.45 put up last season by Lindsey Dare. Behind Parkhill would be Molly Schneider’s 0.84 from 2005, and Lindsey Dare’s 0.93 from 2006.
ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER The Golden Gophers had maybe their best defensive performance of the season on 9/20 vs. Montana. After allowing just one shot in the first half, the Minnesota defense held Montana without a shot in the second. The one shot allowed is one of the best marks in team history, bettered only by the five times Minnesota has held their opponent to no shots.
TOUGH TO BEAT AT THE ROBBIE The Golden Gophers extended their unbeaten streak at the Robbie to 17 matches with their two wins over the weekend. The Golden Gophers are now 16-0-1 in their last 17 home matches. They last lost at the Robbie on 11/8/07, falling 3-4 on penalty kicks, after tying Illinois 2-2 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. IN THE TOURNAMENT Illinois was the only Big Ten Team to advance as far as Minnesota in last season’s NCAA tournament, reaching the Sweet Sixteen. This weekend they become Golden Gophers sixth opponent who was a tournament team in 2008. After five games this season against last year’s NCAA qualifiers, Minnesota is 2-2-1.
RANKED OPPONENTS The Golden Gophers have faced one ranked opponent this season, falling to then #16 Georgia on Aug. 28. The loss dropped their record to 2-12-0 against ranked teams under Mikki Denney Wright. Of teams currently ranked, three remain on Minnesota’s schedule in #15 Purdue, #19 Indiana, and #21 Ohio State. Illinois is currently receiving votes in the NSCAA Top-25 Poll.
PERFECT 10 Cat Parkhill’s 10 saves against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on 9/11 are a career high for the freshman keeper. After the match, the mark stood as the best in the Big Ten, but last weekend was bettered by Michele Dalton of Wisconsin with 12 on 9/20.
