Former Nittany Lion standout Suzanne Isidor returns for her 10th season at the helm of the Penn State women’s lacrosse program. Isidor has compiled a 74-79 record in her nine seasons as the head coach of the Nittany Lions. e eighth coach in Penn State women’s lacrosse history, Isidor and the Nittany Lions etched their name in the record book on March 20, 2002 when they took the ﬁeld for a contest against Johns Hopkins, becoming the ﬁrst women’s lacrosse program in current Division I history to play 500 games.

PENN STATE 2009-2010 WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Prior to returning to Penn State in a coaching capacity, the former Suzanne Weinberg served as the head women’s lacrosse coach at Drew University for four seasons. She guided the Rangers to four-straight Middle Atlantic Conference titles and a Division III NCAA Tournament appearance in 2000. A two-time MAC Coach of the Year, Isidor compiled a 56-15 overall record and coached six AllAmerica selections while at Drew. She was also named the South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 1997. A four-time letterwinner for the Nittany Lions, Isidor helped Penn State advance to the NCAA Tournament three times, reaching the semiﬁnals in her senior campaign. A senior co-captain, she was a 1995 Regional All-American. After graduation, Isidor joined the Penn State coaching ranks as an assistant for one season. In addition to her Penn State coaching duties, Isidor coaches various lacrosse summer camps and is active in the lacrosse community. She has presided over several committees, including her current role as chair of the Tewaaraton Trophy committee. e native of Annapolis, Md., is married to Dan Isidor. Residing in State College, the couple has three sons, Jackson and twins Luke and Evan.

Tara Hohenshelt is entering her 11th season as a member of the Nittany Lion women’s lacrosse staff. After 10 years as an assistant coach, Hohenshelt will served as Director of Operations for the 2010 season. A 1997 graduate of Penn State, she was a defender for four years on the lacrosse team. e former Tara Rowlyk returned to Happy Valley in 1999 after serving a year as the lacrosse coach and athletic recruiter at Centenary College. Before her tenure there, she was an assistant coach at NCAA quarterfinalist Princeton University. Hohenshelt played for Penn State’s 1995 NCAA semifinal team and helped the Lions reach the quarterfinals in 1996 and 1997. She served as a tri-captain in her senior year. She was also the co-captain of the Philadelphia I team that won the 1997 USWLA national championship. As an undergraduate student-athlete, Hohenshelt represented the women’s lacrosse team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. She was cochair of its public relations committee and served as an executive board member. An outstanding student with a 3.41 GPA in secondary math education, Hohenshelt was a Dean’s List student for six semesters. She was twice named a Division I Academic All-American by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association and won Big Ten Conference academic honors as well. Hohenshelt was a three-sport letterwinner while at Ridley High School in Folsom, Pa. She is married to Penn State women’s volleyball assistant coach Dennis Hohenshelt. e couple resides in State College with their son Jacob Owen and are expecting a second child in March 2010.

Former Nittany Lion BJ Lucey is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach under Suzanne Isidor. Lucey earned Regional All-American honors in 2000 and 2001 as a midfielder while at Penn State. In 2002, she graduated with a degree in kinesiology. Lucey’s primary focus is coaching the Nittany Lion goalkeepers. A native of Springfield, Pa., Lucey left her home state after graduation to pursue her coaching interests, landing a job as a graduate assistant for field hockey and lacrosse at e College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. At TCNJ, she helped the Lions reach the Division III Women's Lacrosse National Championship game in 2004. Lucey also strengthened her resume by attaining a Master's of Education degree from e College of New Jersey. In 2004, Lucey returned to Pennsylvania, joining the women's lacrosse program at Temple University as an assistant coach. In 2005, she helped the Owls win the Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship.

After concluding one of the most highly-decorated and distinguished careers in the history of NCAA women’s lacrosse, former Northwestern great Hannah Nielsen will look to continue that success when transitioning from the playing field to the sideline as a member of the Penn State coaching staff for the 2010 season. A star midfielder on the sport’s definitive powerhouse program, Nielsen played an integral role in Northwestern’s rise to prominence, helping it win four straight national championships during her time in Evanston. e Adelaide, Australia native ended her career as the Wildcats’ all-time leader in points (398) and assists (224) and ranked sixth in goals (174). A three-time IWLCA First Team All-American, she was honored with the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy and Lacrosse Honda Award in 2008 and 2009. She was also named IWLCA, American Lacrosse Conference, womenslax.com, and womenslacrosse.com Player of the Year after her junior and senior seasons. Nielsen holds several NCAA Division I records, including career assists, assists in a single game (10), season assists (83), and is the NCAA Championship career assist leader (35). Her 398 career points rank third all-time in NCAA Division I history. Consistent and durable, Nielsen registered at least one point in her last 67 games as a Wildcat and started all 88 games of her NU career, posting a remarkable 85-3 record. Nielsen was a three-year member (2002, 2004-05) of the South Australian U-17 state team, played on the U-19 2003 Australian National Team, and was a member of the South Australian U-21 state team in 2005. Highlighting her international lacrosse career, she scored a goal in a reserve role to help Australia defeat the United States, 14-7, in the gold medal match at the 2005 World Cup. In 2009, Nielsen played on the Australian National Team that advanced to World Cup gold medal match where it was edged by

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK Following a 2009 season in which it posted a winning record, placed second in the conference standings, and advanced to the ALC Championship title game, the Penn State women’s lacrosse team will take the field in 2010 seeking to build on that success and surpass those achievements. Towards that end, 10-year head coach Suzanne Isidor returns a squad comprised of 24 letterwinners, nine starters, and four All-ALC honorees that will be captained by a trio of respected seniors in eresa Bucci, Margo Josephs, and Marisa Lozano. Add to the core group of veterans a small but highly regarded and eminently talented recruiting class and the Penn State women’s lacrosse program is poised to take the next step. “I am excited about 2010 and the potential for this year’s team,” said Isidor. “We had one of our most successful falls in that we improved and achieved a lot of our goals. e team really grew and leaders emerged. From the freshman all the way up to the seniors, everyone showed improvement and the attitude, the work ethic, and the chemistry is some of the best we have had.” ATTACK Despite being dealt a significant blow in the fall when 2009 leading scorer Marisa Lozano was lost for the season with a knee injury, the Penn State attack should remain dangerous with senior Erica Mihm (25 goals, 11 assists), a Second Team AllALC selection a year ago, and junior Jen Steadman (14 goals, 10 assists) spearheading the unit. Senior Mary LeNoir, who sat out the 2009 season, also returns, bringing with her 32 games of starting experience and 33 career goals. Junior Mary Dean came on strong in the fall and will fig-

defense,” said Isidor. Anchoring the defense will be senior Margo Josephs and junior Ashley Boccio. Josephs missed the final four games of the 2009 season with a knee injury but still led the ALC in caused turnovers. Boccio had a breakout sophomore year for which she earned all-conference honors and some All-America recognition. e speedy Jackie Eastman, who successfully switched positions from the midfield in the offseason, has proven to be a tenacious defender and will team well with Josephs and Boccio. A former attacker, junior Katy Wick has used her hard working approach to make the quick adjustment to defensive end and will see action. Sophomores Ashley Ross and Brittaney Chamberlain and freshman Katie Guy, a member of the 2009 Canadian World Cup Team, will also compete for minutes.

ure prominently in the Nittany Lion offense. e attack was bolstered in the offseason with the addition of gifted newcomers Molly Fernandez and Hayley Sofarnos, who Isidor describes as “two of the most prepared for the college game as we have had coming in as freshmen.” Fernandez was a prolific scorer at the high school level while Sofarnos, a native Australian and the daughter of its legendary national team coach, boasts an impressive international playing resume. MIDFIELD “We have seven true midfielders on our roster, all of whom I expect to see playing time and make an impact this year,” said Isidor. An experienced and productive senior duo in eresa Bucci and Maria Valderas will headline the corps. Bucci is the team’s leading scoring midfielder with 59 career points while Valderas has started 51 consecutive games. Junior Laura Lesnick, who finished third on the team in goals last season with 22, and sophomore eresa Zichelli, a versatile player in the same mold as former Penn State great Jessi Lieb, will also provide significant contributions on both ends of the field. Maggie Dunbar, a junior, has made a smooth transition from defense to the midfield and will play a key role in the transition game. With a year of college lacrosse under their belts, sophomores Aly Adams and Elaine Welch could be ready to break into the line-up. DEFENSE “We will have a lot of competition for playing time on defense. We don’t have a lot of experience, but we do have a lot of depth and speed, which will allow us to play an exciting style of

GOALKEEPERS e position of greatest strength, both in terms of depth and talent, for the Nittany Lions in 2010 may be at goalkeeper. “We have two of the most talented goalkeepers we have had in a long time,” said Isidor. “Both are tremendously athletic and hard workers. I think our defense is very comfortable with both.” Senior Stephanie Ellis established herself as a top-notch collegiate goalkeeper with a standout 2009 season. Starting all 17 games, she ranked second in the conference in goals against average en route to Second Team All-ALC honors. Sophomore Dana Cahill was promising in limited duty in her freshman campaign is constantly pushing to get on the ﬁeld.

AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE

e American Lacrosse Conference, in its ninth year of existence, is a lacrosse-only conference that consists of the University of Florida, John Hopkins University, Northwestern University, Penn State University, e Ohio State University, the University of South Carolina, and Vanderbilt University. In 2001 coaches from Davidson, John Hopkins, Northwestern, Ohio, Penn State, Ohio State and Vanderbilt met to form this conference as a means to provide more opportunities for the student-athletes at their respective institutions. In 2002, the American Lacrosse Conference sponsored its first season, with Vanderbilt winning the league title. In 2004 the ALC received an automatic qualifying berth to the NCAA Championship for the first time. Davidson withdrew from the conference in 2005. In June of 2006 Florida announced it would be elevating women’s lacrosse to a varsity sport for the 2010 season and in October of 2006, the Gators joined the ALC. In February of 2007, South Carolina also announced the addition of lacrosse to the varsity roster, and in March of 2007, the Gamecocks were admitted to the conference. In 2006 the conference approved a tournament format and 2007 marked the first ALC post-season tournament, with the winner earning the automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. However, in 2008 the conference tournament featured only five teams, and the automatic qualification was suspended. With Florida sponsoring a varsity team in 2010, the fourth year of the tournament, the NCAA bid has been restored and the ALC Championship winner will again earn the league’s automatic berth. e American Lacrosse Conference is synonymous with excellence, both on and off the field. e league has boasted the top conference RPI in five of the eight years of competition, a testament to the depth of the conference. Members of the ALC are consistently found in the national rankings; the conference typically boasts at least three schools in the top-20 polls. e national champion has been a member of the ALC in five of the conference’s eight years of existence; the league has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Championship in six of the eight years. In 2007, three members of the conference were designated as seeds. On an individual basis, student-athletes from the conference have been honored for outstanding performances on a regular basis. e Honda Award, recognizing the top player in the game, has been presented to a student-athlete from the conference in each of the last five seasons, including three times to Kristen Kjellman from Northwestern and twice to Hannah Nielsen, also from NU. e Tewaaraton Trophy, which honors the premier collegiate player, has been awarded to a student-athlete from the conference for four consecutive years, with Kjellman winning twice and Nielsen being honored during the last two seasons. In 2009, Northwestern’s Hilary Bowen was named the ESPN e Magazine Academic AllAmerican of the Year. Northwestern’s Kelly Amonte Hiller has earned National Coach of the Year honors in three of the last five seasons. International Impact

e conference has been part of signiﬁcant lacrosse events as both student-athletes and coaches have participated in both the World Cup and the Under-19 World Championships. Two members of the 2003 USA World Championship team went on to play lacrosse at conference institutions; four current student-athletes at conference schools won a world title in 2007 with the USA Under-19 team. In 2005, Hannah Nielsen won a gold medal with the Australian national team at the IFWLA World Cup; in 2009 Northwestern alumna Kristen Kjellman, Saran Albrecht, and Lindsay Munday with Ohio State grad Regina Oliver to win the FIL World Cup.

DIANE WHIPPLE MEMORIAL AWARD enn State remembers the late Diane Whipple, a two-time All-American and Penn State’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1990, whose life was tragically taken in a dog attack in San Francisco on January 26, 2001. “Diane’s tragic death left her many friends here and throughout the country in shock and grief,” said Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley. “She was a young person of unlimited possibility. During her career as a student-athlete, Diane excelled at the highest level.” Whipple was an integral member of the 1987 and 1989 National Championship teams. After her collegiate career was over, Whipple continued to impact the world of lacrosse by coaching. After serving as the head coach at UC San Diego, Whipple became the head coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. “Diane brought to those coaching responsibilities the same dedication and purpose that marked her play as an athlete,” stated Curley. “Our thoughts and prayers are forever with the members of the St. Mary’s team who have lost a mentor and friend. Those who knew Diane will forever treasure the memory. She was a marvelous athlete and, even more important, a teammate of uncommon grace and sensitivity.”

To keep the spirit of Diane Whipple alive, the Penn State women’s lacrosse program has created an award in Diane’s name. The Diane Whipple Award is presented annually to the Penn State women’s lacrosse player “who displays a competitive passion for the game, and whose work ethic demonstrates the desire and determination to achieve success.” The award winner for the 2009 season was Megan McGuire. Prized for her passing ability and vision, Megan was a mainstay on the Penn State attack as a senior. A leader both on and off the field, she inspired her teammates with her tremendous work ethic and passion. Megan, both as a player and as a person, exhibited the attributes and personified the spirit for which the Diane Whipple Award stands.

MORGAN CENTER PROGRAMS AND FUNCTIONS ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Student-athletes are assigned an individual team counselor who provides advice on academics, academic planning, and career choices, as well as keeping them informed about NCAA, Big Ten and Penn State academic policies.

PENN STATE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FIRSTYEAR ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Study enhancement sessions and two first-year seminar courses are required for all new incoming student-athletes. Upperclass student-athletes can participate in the Study Hall Program and utilize the most up to date computer lab technology available in one of four study spaces on campus. TUTORING PROGRAM

The Morgan Academic Support Center offers free tutoring assistance to all student-athletes. Additionally, group tutoring sessions are regularly offered.

SUE PATERNO MENTORING PROGRAM

The MASCSA Sue Paterno Mentoring Program is designed to help student-athletes on their road to success by assisting in the development of transferable study and time management skills.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE

This Program offers a variety of services to aid student-athletes in identifying their skills and interests and in making decisions regarding their choice of major. Additionally, resumé and cover letter writing, career planning, and gaining professional employment are topics covered in the Jaffe Senior Seminar: Life After Sport.

MORGAN CENTER MISSION Central to the mission of Intercollegiate Athletics is the opportunity for student-athletes to experience a wellrounded educational program at The Pennsylvania State University. The mission of the Morgan Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes is to provide appropriate academic support services and University Faculty Senate, NCAA, and Big Ten Conference academic eligibility information to all student-athletes. These services and information should assist student-athletes in achieving their academic goals while participating in a demanding NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic program. These services also should ensure progress toward graduation through timely completion of degree requirements for baccalaureate and graduate programs.

SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY A sport psychologist provides counseling and support to student-athletes in the areas of mental preparation strategies for training and competition, motivation and meaningful goal setting, visualization and performance planning, concentration and mental focusing, coping skill strategies for dealing with adversity, and, in general, issues pertaining to self-esteem development and student-athlete welfare.

ATHLETIC HONOR SOCIETY

The Athletic Honor Society, Spiritus Leonius (Spirit of the Lion), recognizes student-athletes for outstanding performance in athletics, academics, leadership, and community service.

SAAB

The Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) consists of one voting member and one or more alternates from each of Penn State’s 29 varsity athletic teams. SAAB meets monthly to discuss any new developments within the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and the University that affect all student-athletes at Penn State.

NAGLE CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM 1998 NCAA PROGRAM OF EXCELLENCE The Nagle CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success)/Life Skills Program has been a model program and a consulting resource for the NCAA since its inception in 1989. The Life Skills Program was developed to better prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the athletic arena.

SPEAKERS BUREAU

The Speaker’s Bureau Program provides Penn State student-athletes with the opportunity to develop and utilize public presentation skills while giving back to the community.

PENN PAL PROGRAM

The “Penn” Pal Program enables student-athletes to correspond, on a monthly basis, with fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students in local school districts.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

The Institute provides opportunities for student-athletes to assess their leadership styles and experiences, to develop and enhance their leadership skills, and to determine what public service leadership means to them.

SHADOW PROGRAM

The goal of the program is to give elementary and middle school students the opportunity to tour campus, visit college classes, and interact with student-athletes on a one-to-one basis.

THON

Dance Marathon, often referred to as THON, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the nation, raising more than $59 million for the Four Diamonds Fund and children’s cancer research since its inception in 1973.
