DENNY Fifth Season at Penn State 24-67 2008 Palmer Award Winner North Texas, 2000

Head coach Dawna Denny is in her fifth season guiding the Penn State women’s tennis team. Denny is 24-67 in her tenure at Penn State and 89-143 in ten seasons as a head coach. Denny coached the Nittany Lions to exceptional play this past fall. She led Petra Januskova to a 13-2 singles record, including singles crowns at the Cissie Leary Invitational and Western Michigan Super Challenge, as well as a Big Ten Athlete of the Week accolade. Denny also led Januskova and Nina Sertic to a second-place doubles finish at the Cissie Leary Invitational. Last season, Denny led the Nittany Lions to a 7-16 record and coached Petra Januskova to the first team All-Big Ten team. Januskova became the first Nittany Lion to earn that honor since Maaria Husain in the 2004-05 season. Januskova started the 201011 season No. 81 in the Preseason ITA rankings, the first Penn State player to accomplish the feat since 1989. Denny led the Nittany Lions to an individual runner-up finish at the ITA Atlantic Regional (Petra Januskova), as well as the singles and doubles crowns at the WMU Super Challenge. In the 2009-10 season, Denny coached Petra Januskova to 2010 ITA Atlantic Region Rookie Player of the Year honors. In her first season at Penn State in 2007-08, the Nittany Lions compiled a record of 8-14, including three victories over ranked opponents. Prior to coming to Happy Valley, Denny was an assistant coach at Baylor University where in addition to Big 12 regularseason and tournament titles, she helped the Bears to a berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. The Bears, who peaked at No. 6 in the national rankings, finished the season 13th in the ITA poll. Denny coached two All-America singles players, including 4

Zuzana Zemenova, who was a semifinalist in the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. At Baylor, Denny was heavily involved in player development, recruiting, travel, scheduling, fundraising and budgeting. Prior to joining the staff at Baylor, Denny was the head coach of the women’s tennis program at her alma mater North Texas for six seasons, accumulating the second-most wins by any women’s tennis coach in North Texas history. The Mean Green posted the most wins in 17 years with 15 victories in the 2004 campaign. Denny also helped her alma mater reach the highest regional ranking (13th) in school history that same season. During her tenure with the Mean Green, Denny coached three players to Sun Belt Player of the Week honors and led North Texas to ITA AllAcademic Team awards in 2003 and 2004. In addition to coaching at Baylor and North Texas, Denny served on the Southwest Regional ITA committee (2002-06). She also organized a USTA community service clinic in 2006 and was the tournament director for the Texas Regional High School Tournament from 2001-06. Denny, who earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from North Texas in 2000, was a four-year letter winner for the Mean Green and served as team captain in 1998 and 1999. Denny was an all-conference performer in doubles in 1996 and was an active member of the North Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during her four years as a member of the women’s tennis squad. In her first two seasons at North Texas, Denny tallied a 12-15 record and then moved into the No. 1 singles spot for her junior and senior years. Throughout her collegiate tennis career, she was the Big West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named to the Raptor All-Eagle Academic Team. Denny earned North Texas’ Team Eagle award twice for best work ethic/team spirit.

FENWICK Second Season at Penn State

Fenwick is in his second season as an assistant coach. Fenwick came to Happy Valley after spending the 200910 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Baylor men’s tennis team. As a volunteer assistant coach, Fenwick helped the Baylor Bears to a No. 7 ranking in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll with a 24-7 record. The Bears also landed two singles players and three doubles teams in the national rankings. Additionally, Fenwick taught tennis classes for the health, human performance and recreation department at Baylor and served as an instructor at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

had a hand in producing a Mid-Con Men’s Newcomer of the Year, a Mid-Con Men’s Player of the Year and 10 men’s and women’s all-conference selections while in Macomb. The WIU men also claimed the 2006 Mid-Con Tournament title and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 2006. Fenwick graduated from Western Illinois University in 2006 with a degree in business management. He also earned his master’s degree from WIU in recreation, park and tourism administration in 2009. Fenwick played tennis at Quincy University in 2004-05 after spending time at Sauk Valley Community College (2002-03) and Illinois Valley Community College (2003-04). Fenwick’s brother, Chad, is the director of tennis/head men’s and women’s coach for Ashford University. Fenwick was a teaching tennis professional in his native Dixon, Ill. He has also worked summer tennis camps run by the Naval Academy and Pepperdine University.

Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Fenwick spent four years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Western Illinois. He helped guide the Leathernecks to the Summit League regular-season title in 2008, the program’s first regular-season conference title. Fenwick also

PLAYER PROFILES

RETURNING PLAYERS The Penn State women’s tennis team returns six players from its 2010-11 roster. Penn State is led by seniors Fernanda Perrotta and Kristen Roth. Perrotta’s strong work ethic led her to an outstanding 2011 season in which she tallied 10 doubles wins and was ranked as high as No. 68 in the ITA Poll with her partner Petra Januskova. According to Denny, it is the intangibles that make Roth the player that she is and is a great force in bringing the team together. Juniors Petra Januskova and Sarah Henderson look to jump into a leadership role as upperclassmen and improve upon successful sophomore campaigns. Januskova was named first-team All-Big Ten and ranked in the ITA poll for most of the year. She led the Nittany Lions with a 14-8 record, including five victories over ranked opponents. Denny describes Henderson as an excellent leader in the sense of her never wavering positivity, whether it’s in practice, competition or conditioning. Sophomores on the Nittany Lion roster include MarieFrederique Bedard and Carmen Sandor. Thanks to Bedard’s fighting attitude and eagerness to learn, she earned seven singles victories in her first season with Penn State, including two wins over Big Ten opponents. According to Denny, “the sky is the limit” for a player like Sandor. As a freshman, she tallied both a three and four match win streak during the season. Last season four of Penn State’s six returning players were named to the ITA All-Academic team. Additionally, this marks the third time in four years Penn State’s team as a whole has made the list. Individual winners must be varsity letter winners and maintain at least a 3.50 GPA. TALENTED NEWCOMERS Although Penn State features no freshmen on its roster, the Nittany Lions boast two transfer students. Senior Nina Sertic comes to Happy Valley from Kansas State University and sophomore Chelsea Utting previously played at Marquette University. As a junior at KSU, Sertic tallied a career-high 14 wins in singles play, including four wins in Big 12 action. She also notched a career-best 18 doubles victories playing primarily in the first doubles slot with four different partners during the 2010-11 season. This fall Sertic has shown greatness in the number one doubles spot, partnering with Januskova to amass a 7-3 record, including a victory over No. 48 Li Xi and Maria Fuccillo of Virginia. In her first collegiate season with Marquette, Utting totaled 6

a 35-14 combined singles and doubles record, including a seven match win streak from April 3-15. Utting brings a sense of resilence to the Nittany Lion roster and a can-do attitude that can’t be matched. BUILDING OFF OF THE FALL Several Nittany Lions made great strides during the 2011 Fall season, led by Januskova. Entering the season Januskova was ranked No. 108 in the preseason ITA poll and finished with two individual tournament crowns at the Cissie Leary Invitational and Western Michigan Super Challenge. This marked the second year in a row Januskova won the singles title at the WMU Super Challenge. Additionally, Januskova partnered with Nina Sertic to finish second in the doubles portion of the Cissie Leary Invitational. Januskova finished with a 13-2 singles record - her only two losses came against ranked opponents. Januskova was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 28. The rest of the Nittany Lions have all shown improvement in the fall with players like Bedard, Perrotta and Utting earning several strong victories. Penn State will try to use this positive start in the fall to start the regular season strong. COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE As a member of the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions will continually face some of the toughest competition in the nation. Six members of the Big Ten, including newcoming Nebraska, finished last season in the Top 75 of the ITA rankings. Nine of Penn State’s 22 opponents for the 2012 season finished the season in the ITA Top 75. RECRUITING Penn State continues its outlook on recruiting by finding athletes that are able to succeed on and off the court. “It is imperative that the coaching staff recruit players who have a strong desire to improve and develop their game to the next level,” said Denny. “We are looking for student-athletes who love the challenges of the game and who expect growth in their game. The Penn State family focuses on the complete student-athlete. Our strong academic traditions speak for themselves and we welcome those expectations of recruiting the student-athletes who will uphold our academic and athletic traditions on and off the court. I believe it is a privilege to wear blue and white.”

THE SARNI TENNIS CENTER Penn State opened the new Sarni Tennis Center in September of 1998 and held its first night match against Bloomsbug in April, 1999. The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that includes seven lighted courts, a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans, a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms and a racket stringing area. The Sarni Tennis Center received the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999.

facility. Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of the Sarnis is a Penn State graduate, although both have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State. In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.

WHAT DOES SARNI MEAN FOR PENN STATE TENNIS? It means night matches under the stadium lights. Penn State can now schedule evening matches, which are a crowd favorite. The stadium lighting is state of the art. It means tradition. Through a combination of display cases, banners, etc., the Sarni Center will proudly recognize the achievements of past players, NCAA qualifiers, All-Big Ten picks, Academic All-Americans and so on. It means great visibility on campus. Located in the central part of campus and adjacent to the Bigler Sports Fields, Sarni will be a highly visible facility for the entire Penn State community. This will encourage the Penn State faculty, staff and students as well as the centre County community to catch the tennis fever by watching practices and attending matches.
