n July 15, 2010, Jeff Thompson was introduced as the ninth head coach in Penn State women's gymnastics history. The two-time SEC Coach of the year, joins the Nittany Lion family after 11 successful years at Auburn University in Alabama. He is joined at Penn State by his wife Rachelle, who will serve as the associate head coach. In 11 years as the head of the Auburn University women's gymnastics program, Thompson was named the SEC Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional Head Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2008. Most recently, he became the first head coach at Auburn to be awarded the "Above and Beyond" award in 2009. Despite facing stiff competition in the SEC, Thompson's teams improved each year. The Tigers qualified for NCAA Regionals eight consecutive years and were the No. 2 seed twice the last three years. Women’s Gymnastics

As a coaching team at Auburn, the Thompsons produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnast of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. They coached nine NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and four NCAA Regional Event Champions. Their gymnasts also excelled in the classroom and in the community in their 11 years with the program. There were three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, three CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District members, 41 NACGC/W Academic All-Americans and 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections. Prior to arriving at Auburn, Thompson was the assistant coach at Louisiana State University from 1994-99 and was the Junior Olympic Program Director at the Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy in Fairfield, Ohio from 1993-94. Thompson also held assistant coaching positions at two Big Ten institutions, Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as serving as a graduate assistant coach at Kentucky. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from Kentucky in 1985. He went on to receive a Master of Science in Biomechanics in 1995. Jeff and Rachelle have two sons, Parker (15) and Griffin (13).

THOMPSON First Year at Penn State Auburn, 2004

achelle Thompson begins her first season as the associate head coach of the Penn State women's gymnastics program after 11 years at Auburn University in Alabama. Her husband, Jeff, serves as the head coach. Thompson joined the Auburn staff in 1999 as a choreographer and volunteer coach before being promoted to assistant coach in 2002 and associate head coach in 2006. Her responsibilities included, but were not limited to, handling coaching beam and floor, choreographing beam and floor routines, managing all meet contracts, scheduling community service projects, recruiting, handling travel arrangements and the budget. She was a two-time Auburn University Assistant Coach of the Year and was selected the 2008 NACGC/W Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year. As a coaching team at Auburn, the Thompsons produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnast of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. MONAHAN Third Year at Penn State Ohio State, 2006

ssistant coach Randy Monahan enters his third season with the Penn State women’s gymnastics program. With the Nittany Lions, Monahan aids in recruiting and training student-athletes along with various other aspects of the program. “We are very excited that we were able to keep Randy on our staff,” said head coach Jeff Thompson. “The returning girls really liked his personality and coaching style during his first two seasons at Penn State. We felt like he was a really good fit for us and that he could also be a bridge between the old coaching staff and the new. For us as new coaches, it’s been like having 14 freshmen. Randy has been able to help us understand the returners’ personalities, training habits and competitive trends making our transition a smooth one. As a competitor, Randy was one of the top male gymnasts in the United States and, as such, is able to demonstrate drills and skills like no other coach with which I have ever worked. He has also been an incredible recruiter for Penn State. All of the club coaches in the area know

him from when he was a competitor growing up in Pennsylvania and everyone likes him. He is going to be a great head coach one day; so, we are going to enjoy every minute while we have him here. Monahan was a member of the Ohio State men’s team from 2001 to 2005 and was a seven-time All-American with the Buckeyes, who captured Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2005. He was the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and also captured the Big Ten All-Around title in 2003 and 2004 and was a Nissen-Emery Finalist in 2005, finishing second in the all-around at the NCAA Championships that same year. Monahan comes to Penn State from the club coaching ranks, most recently with Artistic Sports Academy Plus out of Harrisburg, Pa. At Artistics Sports, Monahan assisted the head coach in instruction and analysis of youth athletes as well as various coaching and instructional responsibilities. He was also employed by EJM Food Corporation as a Quality Control Specialist. Prior to his time in the Harrisburg area, Monahan was a coach at Buckeye Gymnastics where he worked with a vide varieties of athletes from levels 4-10. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Ohio State men’s team where he assisted in instructional and managerial capacities as well as having training and competitive responsibilities. Monahan graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human ecology. He is married to volunteer assistant coach, Jillian Monahan.

While Penn State women’s gymnastics is a team, it’s also a family. It is a bond that is strengthened through blood, sweat and tears in the gym and laughter, helping hands and teamwork out of the gym. All of these components build trust, friendships and strong ties, which are necessary to take the team to the next level and have fun along the way. Whether it’s a high-ropes course, the traditional team run up Mt. Nittany or just hanging out at a football game with 110,000 of your closest friends, the Penn State women’s gymnastics team is a family in and out of the gym.

2010 Season Notes Musser, Personett Earn All-America Status Penn State women’s gymnasts senior Brandi Personett and freshman Sharaya Musser combined for seven NACGC.W All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Personett earned three All-America awards, while Musser accrued four. Personett earned First Team All-America status on beam, floor and in the all-around. She finished her career with five total All-America awards. Musser garnered First Team All-America status on vault and in the all-around, while earning Second Team All-America laurels on beam and floor.

Personett, Musser, Ettl Land on Podium at Regionals Senior Brandi Personett, freshman Sharaya Musser and sophomore Natalie Ettl all appeared on the awards podium at the NCAA Regional Championships held at Penn State April 10. Personett took top honors on vault with a 9.950 and in the all-around with a 39.550. She also finished second on floor with a 9.925. Musser took third on floor after scoring a 9.900 and placed second in the all-around with a score of 39.200. Ettl finished in the top three on bars for the tenth time this season with a 9.875, good enough for third place in the event.

Three Named All-Big Ten ree Nittany Lions earned All-Big Ten honors, announced conference oﬃcials at the 2010 Big Ten Chmapionships banquet on Friday, March 26 in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Brandi Personett and freshman Sharaya Musser were both selected to the All-Big Ten first team and sophomore Natalie Ettl garnered Second Team All-Big Ten accolades. Ettl was also Penn State’s honoree for the Sportsmanship Award. e awards mark the 42nd, 43rd and 44th total All-Big Ten honors for the Nittany Lions since joining the league for the 1992 season. is is the fourth career award for Personett, who became just the second Nittany Lion to be named to the first team all four years of her career. It is the first honor for both Musser and Ettl. Musser Voted Freshman of the Year Freshman phenom Sharaya Musser was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year at the 2010 Big Ten Championships on March 27. It was the third rookie honor since Penn State joined the league for the 1992 season. Musser finished third in the all-around with a 39.500. She also earned three second place finishes at the championships. Musser scored a 9.900 on bars, beam and floor to place second in each event. She also posted an eighth place finish on vault with a 9.800. Personett Named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year Senior Brandi Personett was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year for the second straight season. It was the sixth honor for a Nittany Lion gymnast since 1992. Personett won the Big Ten all-around title for the third time in her career with a 39.550 at the Big Ten Championships hosted by Ohio State on March 27. She also defended her floor title for the third straight season with a 9.950. Personett was PSU’s top finisher on vault scoring a 9.850 for third, she tied her season-high on the uneven bars for another third place finish with a 9.875 and took eighth on the beam with a 9.875. Ettl Wins Unevens Bars Title at Big Ten Championships Sophomore bars specialist Natalie Ettl won the uneven bars at the 2010 Big Ten Championships. She scored a 9.925 to take the title. It was her ninth top three finish on the event this season and her fifth win.

Musser Selected Freshman of the Week Freshman Sharaya Musser led the Lions with two individual event titles and a second place finish in the all-around vs. Nebraska. Musser earned top honors for the third time this season on vault with a 9.950 and her fifth title on bars scoring a 9.900. She also scored a personal-best 9.850 on floor to take third finishing in the top five for the first time in 2010. Musser scored a 38.950 in the all-around and also turned in a ninth place finish on beam with a 9.250.

Musser Sweeps Weekly Honors Freshman Sharaya Musser was named the Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Week on March 8. Musser was a catalyst in Penn State’s victory on March 7 against No. 12 Michigan, Maryland and Bridgeport. Competing in the all-around for just the third time in 2010, Musser scored a personal-best 39.600 to take the crown. She won her second vault title with a career-high 9.975 and her third on beam with a personal-best 9.925. Musser tied her season-high on bars with a 9.875 to take fourth and turned in a sixth place finish on floor with a 9.825. Musser received the Ann Carr award for her performance. Stine Steps Up on Bars Sophomore Alex Stine made her 2010 debut on March 7 against Maryland, Michigan and Bridgeport with a performance on the uneven bars. Less than a week later on March 12, Stine tied her personal-best on the event with a 9.825 in the quad meet at Utah.

Personett Earns Fifth GOW Award Senior Brandi Personett guided the Nittany Lions to a 195.950-194.925 win against WVU on Feb. 20. Personett scored a personal-best 39.700 in the all-around to take top honors and took home titles in three events. e Katy, Texas native won vault (9.950), beam (9.925) and floor (9.950). She also finished second on bars with a 9.875.

Musser Chosen Freshman of the Week Freshman Sharaya Musser earned the first weekly conference honor of her career on Feb. 15. At Pittsburgh, Musser took home her first individual event title after tying for first on beam with a 9.875. She also finished second on two events, including vault with a personal-best 9.925 and on the uneven bars scoring a 9.825.

Personett is Perfect...Again Senior Brandi Personett scored the second 10.0 of the season and her career on vault in the Feb. 13 meet at Pittsburgh. She also took individual event titles on beam with a 9.875 and floor with a 9.900. Personett finished tied for second on bars with freshman Sharaya Musser with a 9.825. She also tied her career-high in the all-around with a 39.600 to take top honors. Personett was selected the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the fourth time this season and the 13th time in her career for her performance. Personett is Perfect Senior Brandi Personett, who anchored the Penn State vault lineup in the Jan. 23 quad meet, scored a perfect 10.0 to take the title. It was the first 10.0 on vault since Katie Rowland’s 10.0 in 2003. She helped the Nittany Lions tie the program’s record score on vault of 49.500. She received the Ann Carr award for most inspirational performance at the meet. Konsevick Makes Her Mark Sophomore Daryl Konsevick competed on beam and floor in the seasonopening meet at Michigan State. Konsevick, competing on beam for the first time in her PSU career, finished third with a score of 9.675. She went on to score a career-high 9.875 on floor.

Smith Makes a Comeback After missing the last few weeks of 2009 with an injury, senior Rosie Smith competed in two events to open her senior season on Jan. 9. Smith scored a 9.650 on vault and a 9.100 on the uneven bars at the Michigan State Quad meet. Personett Named Big Ten GOW Senior Brandi Personett was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after her performance in the Michigan State Quad meet. It was the 10th weekly honor of her career. Personett won the all-around title (39.225), as well as individual event titles on vault (9.900), beam (9.850) and floor (9.900).

at Denver • January 16 DENVER, Colo. - The Penn State women's gymnastics team earned a second place finish at Denver's Winterfest Classic. The Nittany Lions recorded a score 194.150. Denver took first at the meet with a score 194.650 and Air Force took third with a score of 185.850. Senior Brandi Personett won the all-around title in a quad meet at Michigan State to open the 2010 season.

MSU led the way with a team score of 193.925, Penn State finished second at 193.900, West Virginia took third with a score of 191.225 and Western Michigan posted a 189.525. As a team, the Nittany Lions recorded a 48.900 on vault, a 48.550 on the uneven bars, a 47.950 on beam and a 48.500 on floor. Michigan State scored 48.875 on vault, 47.950 on bars, 47.950 on beam and a 49.050 on floor to win the meet. Senior Brandi Personett opened her final season claiming the allaround title with a 39.225. Sophomore Whitney Bencsko finished seventh in the all-around with a score of 37.675. Penn State opened the meet on bars. Senior Alexandra Brockway and sophomore Natalie Ettl tied for second in the event to lead the Lions. NCAA Regional Championship • April 4 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's gymnastics team fell shy of advancing to the NCAA National Championships as the Nittany Lions finished third with a score of 196.050. No. 2 Oklahoma finished first with a 197.250 and No. 11 LSU took second with a 196.400 to both earn a berth in the NCAA National Championships. New Hampshire placed fourth in the competition with a 194.800, Ohio State scored a 193.875 for fifth and Maryland took sixth with a 193.750. Senior Brandi Personett and freshman Sharaya Musser finished first and second, respectively, in the all-around. The pair advances to the NCAA Championships as individual competitors. Personett scored a 39.550 and Musser earned a 39.200. As a team, Penn State scored a 49.050 on vault, a 49.000 on the uneven bars, a 48.775 on beam and a 49.225 on floor. The Nittany Lions opened the meet on vault where Personett tied for first with LSU's Susan Jackson with a 9.950. Junior Danielle Hover was Penn State's next top performer and she took seventh with a career-high tying 9.850. Rohrbaugh led off the rotation for PSU scoring a 9.675, while freshman Madison Merriam followed scoring a 9.750. Senior Rosie Smith scored a 9.675 and Musser added a score of 9.825 to Penn State's total. Maryland's Allison Krikorian and Oklahoma's Natasha Kelley tied for third with a 9.900 to round out the top finishers on the event.

2010 Meet Summaries Sophomore Natalie Ettl was PSUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top performer on bars. She scored a 9.875 for third place. Stine scored a 9.800 to set the tone on bars for the Nittany Lions with senior Alexandra Brockway following with a 9.750. Personett turned in a 9.800 on the event and Musser scored a 9.775. LSU's Jackson took home top honors on bars with a 9.950 and Oklahoma's Hollie Vise placed second with a 9.900. Personett was the top Nittany Lion performer on beam with a 9.875, good enough for fifth place. Rohrbaugh was PSU's first competitor on beam and scored a 9.700. Hover turned in a 9.775 performance and Musser scored a 9.700 in the middle of the rotation. Southard was Penn State's fifth competitor on beam and she scored a 9.725. Oklahoma took the top three spots on beam. Vise won the event with a 9.950, while Kristin Smith and Megan Ferguson tied for second with a 9.925. Penn State closed out the NCAA Regional Championships on floor. Personett finished second with a 9.925 and Musser scored a seasonhigh tying 9.900 for third. Oklahoma's Jackie Flanery won the event with a 9.950. Smith started the Lions off on floor with a 9.750 before Rohrbaugh turned in a routine scoring a 9.725. Southard tied her season high with a 9.800 and Merriam posted a 9.850 halfway through the rotation. NCAA Championships â&#x20AC;˘ April 22 GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Penn State women's gymnasts senior Brandi Personett and freshman Sharaya Musser combined for seven NACGC/W All-America honors at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, April 22. Personett earned three All-America honors, while Musser accrued four. Personett earned First Team All-America status on beam, floor and in the all-around. She has now accumulated five All-America honors, as she was a 2008 All-American on beam and a 2009 All-American on floor. Musser garnered First Team All-America status on vault and in the all-around, while earning Second Team All-America laurels on beam and floor. PSU now has 85 total individual All-Americans. Competing with Utah, Musser opened the first session of the NCAA Championships on floor where she scored a 9.875. In rotation two, Musser earned a vault score of 9.900. After a bye in the third rotation, Musser moved on to bars scoring a 9.825. Musser closed out the first session on beam with a 9.850. Personett rotated with host Florida in the second session. Following a bye to open the meet, Personett scored a 9.825 before turning in a 9.875 on beam. She and the Gators had a bye in rotation four before moving to floor. Personett posted a 9.900 on floor and scored a 9.875 on vault to close out the session.

Senior Brandi Personett earned three All-American honors at the 2010 NCAA Championship, earning First Team NACGC/W All-America honors on beam, floor and in the all-around. She finished her career with five All-America honors.

The women's gymnastics championships consist of 12 teams and 12 all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and individual event specialists. The top two teams and the top two all-arounders from each of the six regionals received automatic berths to the national championships. The top four individuals (plus ties) on each event, including the all-around from each session, qualify to compete in the Individual Event Finals on Saturday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at Florida's Stephen C. O'Connell Center.

AIAW - Karen Schuckman becomes Penn State’s first national championship participant and wins the all-around as a freshman.

1975

AIAW - The Penn State team makes its first national championship appearance and finishes in fifth place. Schuckman wins floor exercise and finishes in a tie for the vaulting title.

1976

AIAW - Fifth place.

1977

AIAW - The team climbs to third place led by the brilliant performance of Ann Carr who wins the all- around.

1978

AIAW - Penn State wins its first national championship in gymnastics and in any women’s sport with a 147.70 score, 0.15 ahead of Cal State-Fullerton. Ann Carr sweeps the all-around for the second consecutive year and wins individual titles on bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

1979

AIAW - The Lady Lions host the national championship and finish second to Cal State-Fullerton by 0.10. Marcy Levine wins an event title in floor exercise as a freshman.

1980

AIAW - Penn State captures its second national championship with a score of 145.50, just 0.35 ahead of runner-up Utah. The Lions take the team title without an individual national champion.

1981

AIAW - Third place. Heidi Anderson wins the floor exercise.

Ann Carr Award

Ann Carr was a member of the Penn State women’s gymnastics team from 1977-80. Carr was a two-time National Champion in the all-around (‘77 & ‘78) and won titles on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise in 1978. She is Penn State’s only four-time All-American on one event, which she earned on the uneven bars. Carr was also a three-time All-American in the all-around, as well as on vault, beam and floor exercise. The Ann Carr Award is given to the gymnast who provides the most inspirational performance at each home meet. Below are the five honorees from 2010.

Five members of the Penn State gymnastics team were awarded the Ann Carr award during the 2010 season. Senior Brandi Personett (top left) earned the award at the home-opener on Jan. 23 after scoring the first 10.0 on vault since 2003. Freshman Sharaya Musser (center) earned the honor twice in 2010 on Jan. 30 and March 7, while sophomore Whitney Benckso (top right) received the award on Feb. 20. Seniors Rosie Smith (bottom left) and Casey Rohrbaugh (bottom right) were honored on Feb. 6 and March 20, respectively. 46

Academic Success enn State is not only among the top teams in the nation athletically, but also academically. The Nittany Lions consistently produce one of the highest team grade point averages in the country while also racking up several of the highest individual grade point averages. Penn State finished 35th in the nation in 2009 with a team GPA of 3.28. In 2010, five Nittany Lion student-athletes were named Scholar Athletes by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). Academic Counselor

he women’s gymnastics program at Penn State prides itself on excellence, both in the gym and in the classroom. One of the primary academic resources for gymnasts is the Morgan Academic Center. Located in MBNA Building in the middle of campus, the center provides a full range of services for intercollegiate athletes, including academic advising, career counseling, sports psychology, and sports research. The purpose of the center is to help the student-athlete make normal progress toward graduation while managing the demands associated with attending a major NCAA Division I institution. Specific objectives include helping student-athletes develop individualized academic plans, providing the means by which student-athletes can assume full responsibility for their education, and assisting freshman studentathletes in making a successful transition to college life. That philosophy is evident in the Big Ten Academic All-Conference team. The Nittany Lions, in their 18 years in the Big Ten, have placed 125 student-athletes on the Academic All-Conference team.

The Morgan Academic Center is housed in the newly-built MBNA Building located centrally on the University Park campus.

Gymnastics Facilities

he Penn State women’s gymnastics team trains in the White Building, centrally located on the Penn State campus. The squad’s training base is situated just one block from the dormitory that houses many of Penn State’s gymnasts.

The White Building has been home to the Nittany Lion gymnastics team since 1976. Extensively renovated during the summer and fall of 2000 at a cost of nearly two million dollars, the gym’s design and its amenities make it one of the finest gymnastics facilities in the country. The state-of-the-art facility features 13,400 square feet of training space which is nearly twice the size of most collegiate facilities. The team has the benefit of working on new AAI equipment and landing mats at a multitude of training stations. There are two 40 square foot floor exercise systems, each with a Resi pit adjacent for tumbling, and a 68-foot tumbling strip where gymnasts can choose between a Resi pit or a deep foam pit landing. Three vaulting stations are available, maximizing the gymnasts’ ability to train using safe and effective progressions. Solid foam landing pits are available for every event. Complete with new heating and air conditioning systems, upgraded lighting and a unique architectural design, the gym is not only functional but beautiful, as well. Motorized blinds have been installed to filter out sunlight from the 32 spacious windows which adorn the gym. In addition to the gym space, one of the exciting enhancements to the White Building gymnastics area is the addition of a team lounge that features all the latest amenities. This lounge area is available for study, relaxation or to review video footage. Leather couches and chairs, a fireplace and a big screen television give the lounge area a "living room feel." In addition the locker room is furnished with wood lockers and a private shower area. All this makes the Penn State gymnastics home in the White Building one of the most state-of-the-art training facilities in the nation. 60

Historic Rec Hall

The Nittany Lion gymnastics squad will host four home meets during the 2011 season. Rec Hall (pictured above) is the home of Nittany Lion gymnastics competition and has served as the home of the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics Championships and Regional and NCAA Championship competition.

he Penn State gymnastics facilities fall into two categories: rich in tradition with an extensive gymnastics history, or modern, state of the art and brand new. Recreation Building, as it is officially named, has the tradition. Since 1943, the gymnasium has hosted championship and international gymnastic meets. It has been the site of four Olympic Trials, 15 international meets, and six national collegiate gymnastics championships. In 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010, Rec Hall was the site of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional meets. A gymnastics-friendly arena, Rec Hall was also the site for the 2000 and 2007 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships. Rec Hall was built in 1929 and remodeled in 1965. The seating increased from 5,000 to 7,200, but recent changes have resulted in a current capacity of 6,846. Considered a preferred site for championship events in gymnastics, Rec Hall has scoreboards on the East and West ends designed for gymnastics scoring.

Olympians Cathy Rigby from the United States and Ludmilla Tourischeva from the Soviet Union have competed in Rec Hall. The top crowd ever in Rec Hall — 8,700 — was on hand when the Nittany Lions hosted No. 1 Utah on March 11, 1981. When Penn State met Cal State-Fullerton on Feb. 2, 1980, the attendance was 8,532. While Rec Hall hosts Penn State’s competitive meets, the women’s gymnastics team practices in White Building. The White Building is located in the middle of campus and was the site of the Nittany Lions’ first competitions. The White Building facility was renovated once again prior to the 2001 season. The 13,400 square feet of renovated space cost nearly $2 million to complete. The additions to the facility include loose foam and resipits. The extra space allows extra room for three sets of equipment, making this one of the finest collegiate facilities in the nation. The Nittany Lions also utilize the intercollegiate weight room in Rec Hall. The facility is used by intercollegiate athletes only and is specially designed to fit the needs of an intercollegiate varsity squad.
