FUTURE HOME OF PENN STATE HOCKEY Pegula Ice Arena, which broke ground in early February 2012, will feature two ice surfaces: a main rink, home to Penn State’s varsity hockey program, and a community rink. The main arena will feature 6,000 seats, including a 1,000-seat student section. The two-sheet facility will be home to the Nittany Lions beginning with the 2013-14 season and will feature a 5,000-square foot weight room, hydrotherapy training room, steam room, team lounge and locker room area. When visitors come to Hockey Valley, they will experience some of the best amenities college hockey has to offer. Pegula Ice Arena will feature an interactive history of Penn State Hockey, as well as concession stands, suites, loge boxes and club seats. In addition, the arena’s ability to house state-of-the-art media and broadcasting facilities will allow it to host National Hockey League and American Hockey League games, bringing hockey’s best to State College. The Centre County community will also be able to take advantage of the community rink, which will be open approximately 360 days per year for public use. The rink will seat 300 fans, feature eight locker rooms and host local youth hockey and skating programs. The facility was brought to fruition by an initial $88 million donation—the largest in University history—from Terry and Kim Pegula, who, through their gift, helped elevate Penn State’s club program to the NCAA Division I level. At the ceremonial groundbreaking on April 20, 2012, the Pegulas added $14 million to the project to lift the total donation to $102 million. Pegula Ice Arena will be located near the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road, across from the Bryce Jordan Center. It will be completed in time for the 2013-14 season, coinciding with the men’s team second year at the NCAA level and the first year of the Big Ten Hockey Conference.

Inaugural NCAA Season NCAA DIvision I Hockey Comes To Penn State On September 17, 2010, Penn State Hockey began a new era with the largest private gift in the University’s history - $88 million from Terry and Kim Pegula - to fund a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose arena and establish an NCAA Division I men’s hockey program. The Nittany Lions will play the 2012-13 season as an independent before joining the new Big Ten Hockey Conference in 2013-14.

Media Information MEDIA CREDENTIALS All requests for working press credentials for 2012-13 Penn State men’s hockey home games should be made at least one day prior to the game. PRESS FACILITIES The press area for game operations and writers will be located on the balcony section of the arena. Home and visiting radio broadcasters will be stationed at the top of Section C at center ice. Wireless internet is available within the arena. Writers will be able to file stories from the press area after games.

Please include your name, affiliation, cell phone and e-mail address on all requests. All credentials can be picked up at the will call area at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion main desk.

RADIO/TV Radio/TV wishing to broadcast or tape a game must contact Matt Caracappa. Radio broadcasts must be able to use wireless internet as phone and internet lines will not be available. The home and visiting radio broadcast areas are located at the top of Section C at center ice. TV cameras can set up at the top of the stairwell near Section D and around the glass of the rink.

INTERVIEW POLICIES All interviews with student-athletes and coaches must be arranged through the athletic communications office. Studentathletes should not be contacted directly and have been instructed not to grant requests unless facilitated through athletic communications. Student-athlete interviews will take place on Thursday either before or after practice. Interviews conducted before practice must be completed no later than 20 minutes prior to the start of practice. Interviews for student-athletes and coaches may also take place on different days and must be arranged through Matt Caracappa. Postgame press conferences will be held in the Greenberg Ice Pavilion auxiliary room on the main level of the arena. Head coach Guy Gadowsky and select student-athletes will be available after the 10-minute cool down period. Postgame interviews with the visiting team head coach and student-athletes should be arranged through the visiting team athletic communications contact.

PHOTOGRAPHERS Photographers wishing to shoot games at Greenberg Ice Pavilion must also request credentials. 2012-13 Preview

2012-13 Season • The Nittany Lions will compete as an independent in their first NCAA Division I season. • Penn State boasts five players — Max Gardiner (Minnesota), Taylor Holstrom (Mercyhurst), Nate Jensen (Mercyhurst), Bryce Johnson (St. Cloud State), Justin Kirchhevel (Alaska Anchorage) — who have NCAA Division I experience. • The roster breakdown includes six seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and 10 freshmen. The average height is just over 6-foot-0 and the average weight is 192. • Nine players played in the United States Hockey League in the season prior their arrivals at Penn State. The Nittany Lions represent 17 different states and Canadian provinces. • The Nittany Lions will play games against teams from all five NCAA Division I conferences — Atlantic Hockey, CCHA, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East, WCHA — and fellow independent Alabama Huntsville. • At least three teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA tournament appear on Penn State’s schedule. The Nittany Lions will host Air Force (Nov. 9-10) and will visit Michigan State (Jan. 25-26) and Frozen Four participant Union (Nov. 24-25). • Penn State will play at four neutral site venues, including two NHL arenas. The Nittany Lions will compete in the Pittsburgh College Hockey Invitational Dec. 28-29 at CONSOL Energy Center and will play Vermont at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 19.

Head Coach Overall Record: 173-198-37 (12 seasons) First Season Colorado College ‘89

Guy Gadowsky, who has more than a decade of collegiate head coaching experience, was named head coach of the Penn State men’s hockey team on April 24, 2011. Gadowsky came to Happy Valley following a successful sevenyear stint as Princeton’s bench boss (2004-11). In his first five years as head coach, the Tigers improved their win total in each season. In 2008-09, Princeton captured a program-record 22 victories and earned its second straight NCAA tournament appearance. During the 2007-08 campaign, Gadowsky, who inherited a program that had a won a combined eight games in the two seasons prior to his arrival, guided Princeton to both the ECAC Hockey tournament and Ivy League crowns. The team earned its first NCAA tournament berth since 1998, and Gadowsky garnered ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year honors and was a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, presented to Division I hockey’s top coach. He was also named Inside College Hockey National Coach of the Year.

He followed that up with 15 wins the following season and 16 his last season. In addition, Alaska twice hosted the first round of the CCHA playoffs in a three-year span, a feat never accomplished prior to Gadowsky’s arrival. During his tenure with the Nanooks, his teams set school records for team grade-point average, wins and game attendance. During Penn State’s transition to the NCAA Division I level, Gadowsky spent the 2011-12 season as head coach of the University’s club team and led the squad to a 29-4-1 record. Before joining the collegiate ranks, Gadowsky spent three seasons (1996-99) as head coach and director of hockey operations for the Fresno Falcons of the West Coast Hockey League. He led the squad to the playoffs in each season and left the team as the winningest coach in franchise history. In his first season, Gadowsky posted a 38-win campaign as he garnered WCHL Coach of the Year accolades.

While at Princeton, Gadowsky had more than 20 players go on to sign professional contracts, with Kevin Westgarth playing with the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings in 2011-12. Gadowsky also coached two ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Players of the Year as Lee Jubinville (2008) and Zane Kalemba (2009) each won the award in their junior seasons. Prior to Princeton, Gadowsky spent five seasons as head coach of Alaska (1999-2004), where he inherited a team that had not won more than 14 games in the previous five seasons since joining the CCHA. After two rebuilding seasons, Gadowsky led the Nanooks, who were ranked 11th nationally at the end of the season, to their first 20-win campaign since they joined the CCHA. 12 2012-13 // PENN STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

• Guided Princeton to two of its three NCAA tournaments since the NCAA began sponsoring hockey in 1947-48

Away from the ice, Gadowsky also coached in the now-defunct Roller Hockey International, leading the Oklahoma Coyotes (1996) and San Jose Rhinos (1997-99). In 1997, he earned Coach of the Year recognition after the Rhinos captured the Western Conference title. The Edmonton, Alta., native played collegiately at Colorado College from 1985-89, serving as team captain as a senior. He earned the team’s Rodman Award, given for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship, and was a three-time WCHA All-Academic Team member. Upon graduation, Gadowsky embarked on a seven-year professional career that included stops with the ECHL’s Richmond Renegades, the IHL’s San Diego Gulls and the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs and Prince Edward Island Senators. Gadowsky saved his best season for last as he totaled 52 goals and 29 assists for the Fresno Falcons in 1995-96. He earned league MVP and first-team all-star recognition. In addition, Gadowsky spent a portion of the 1993-94 season competing with the Canadian National Team and also played professionally in Austria, The Netherlands and Sweden. Gadowsky and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Mac and Magnus, and a daughter, Mia.

hockey staff Keith Fisher Assistant Coach First Season St. Cloud State ‘00

Keith Fisher, who served on head coach Guy Gadowsky’s staff at Princeton for six seasons, joined Penn State as an assistant coach on May 4, 2011. During his time at Princeton, he helped guide the team to two NCAA tournament appearances (2008, 2009) and the 2009 ECAC Hockey championship. He also helped develop two Hobey Baker Award finalists, four All-Americans and four players who reached the NHL. Prior to his time at Princeton, Fisher spent five years with the USHL’s Omaha Lancers’ coaching staff, helping the team to the Clark Cup championship in 2001 and Anderson Cup regularseason championships in both 2002 and 2005. In Omaha, he served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor, in addition to other responsibilities of on-ice coaching, video breakdown and game analysis. Fisher coached and recruited NHL first-round draft picks Keith Ballard and Nick Petrecki, seven current NHL players, including Matt Carle and Paul Stastny, and USHL Goaltender of the Year and USA Hockey Junior Player of the Year Jeff Lerg. Fisher helped develop 54 NCAA Division I scholarship players and 12 NHL draft picks. In addition, Fisher served as associate coach for Team USHL at the USHL Prospects/All-Star game during his final season in Omaha. Prior to his arrival in Omaha, Fisher served two seasons with St. Cloud State as an undergraduate assistant.

A native of the Zim, Minn., Fisher has coached at Minnesota Hockey Camps for more than a decade. His coaching career began in the Minnesota public school system as a coach of both football and baseball at Cherry High School.

Matt Lindsay, who served on head coach Guy Gadowsky’s staff at Princeton for four seasons, was named an assistant coach on May 4, 2011. Prior to his time at Princeton (2007-11), Lindsay spent the 200607 season as an assistant coach at Robert Morris. With the Colonials, Lindsay served as the team’s video coordinator and helped with recruiting. He joined Robert Morris’ staff following one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Colorado College, where he handled video, pre-scouting and one-ice responsibilities. Before Colorado College, Lindsay served three seasons (2002-05) as an assistant coach at Hobart College and one season (200102) in the same capacity at Utica College. Lindsay, who graduated from Williams College in 2001, earned the William E. McCormick “Coaches” Award as a senior. The award is presented to a member of the hockey team who best exemplifies leadership, loyalty, a selfless devotion to the team, a youthful delight in the game of hockey and, above all, a strong commitment to community service.

Bill Downey, who served as the director of hockey operations at Harvard in 2010-11, joined Penn State in the same capacity on June 17, 2011. A former professional hockey player and coach, Downey joined the Harvard staff after two years as an assistant coach with Penn State’s club hockey team. With Penn State, Downey was active in recruiting and served as an assistant director of the Penn State Ice Hockey Camps. He also was part of the advisory board that helped with the preparation for Penn State’s launch of NCAA hockey. During the 2007-08 season, Downey was an assistant coach for the Reading Royals of the ECHL, assisting in running practice, video analysis, opponent scouting and player development. At the same time, he served as hockey director for Team Comcast and Flyers Skate Zone in Pennsauken, N.J., where he oversaw all hockey programs, clinics and camps and promoted the game in Philadelphia and southern New Jersey. Downey also served as an Atlantic scout for the USHL’s Chicago Steel in 2007 and, since 2007, has been involved in the USA Hockey Coaching Education Program. He has organized and instructed at clinics for individuals seeking USA Hockey coaching certification. As a player, Downey spent parts of four seasons playing for the Johnstown Chiefs, Wheeling Nailers and Reading Royals of the ECHL. He was invited to the 2004-05 Pittsburgh Penguins training camp and also attended the training camp of the Penguins’ AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. As a player at Penn State, Downey earned ACHA All-America status and helped the team win three straight national championships (2001-03). He was also a member of Team USA for the 2003 World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy. A 2004 graduate, Downey earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. Josh Hand was named the Penn State men’s hockey team’s volunteer assistant coach on July 17, 2012. Hand served in the same capacity for Penn State’s top club team in 2011-12 and, in 2010-11, he worked as the team’s assistant coach. Prior to joining the Penn State staff, Hand spent two seasons (2008-10) as assistant coach and hockey director for Texas A&M’s club hockey program. In 2009-10, Hand helped lead the Aggies to the school’s first-ever berth in the ACHA regional tournament. A 2008 graduate of Concordia, Hand played hockey and football and was a Dallas Stars rookie camp attendee.

Justin Rogers will enter his first season as the Penn State men’s hockey team’s athletic trainer in 2012-13. Rogers came to Penn State after spending the past two years as a graduate assistant football athletic trainer with the University of Nebraska. Prior to working with Nebraska, Rogers worked on the Chicago Bears athletic training staff during the 2009 season. A 2009 Michigan State graduate, he worked as an athletic training student for the men’s hockey team and also provided services to other sports programs at the school.

Strength & Conditioning Coach First Season New Brunswick ‘98 Strength & conditioning coach veteran Robert McLean was named Penn State Hockey’s head strength & conditioning coach on July 17, 2012. McLean, who came to Penn State with more than nine years of NHL experience, most recently served as the head strength & conditioning coach for the Colorado Avalanche for two seasons (2010-12). Prior to Colorado, McLean was the head strength & conditioning specialist for BRS Sports for two years and also worked as a strength & conditioning specialist with High Performance Specialists from 1999-2000.

In addition to his time with Detroit, Sheehan spent two stints as an equipment assistant with the Phoenix Coyotes (1998-2003, 2005-08) and also served in the same capacity with the Carolina Hurricanes during the 2003-04 campaign. In 2004-05, he worked as the head equipment manager for Sacred Heart’s men’s and women’s hockey teams. Sheehan and his wife, Kelli, reside in State College.

Longtime Penn State Athletics and University Development employee Joe Battista assumed a pivotal role with Penn State as the Associate Athletic Director for Ice Arena & Hockey Development in September 2010. Battista was instrumental in facilitating the largest gift in the University’s history, an $88 million donation for a multi-purpose ice facility and Division I men’s ice hockey team, which came through the generosity of Terry and Kim Pegula. A longtime head coach of Penn State’s men’s club hockey team and former Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club, Battista most recently served as the Director of Major Gifts for the Smeal College of Business, a position he accepted in March 2009.

From 1982-85, Battista was an Assistant to the Marketing Director for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and was also head coach of the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins at that time. In 1983, he was the co-founder of the Amateur Penguins Hockey organization, which to this day fields competitive teams in six age groups, and created the position of Director of Amateur Hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins, serving as its first Director. A USA Hockey Master Level Coach, he was a USA Hockey Player Development and Coaching Certification instructor for 20 years. In 2003, he coached Team USA at the World University Games in Tarvisio, Italy.

During his tenure, Battista was awarded the 2009 Ridge Riley Lions’ Pride Award in the Division of Development and Alumni Relations.

Battista has been inducted into numerous halls of fame for his athletic accomplishments and contributions to hockey, including the ACHA Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Penn Hills Sports Hall of Fame and the Penn State Ice Hockey Hall of Fame.

In his first development position, Battista served as the Executive Director of the Nittany Lion Club from 2006-09. While with the Nittany Lion Club, Battista helped grow the club to a thenrecord 23,000 members. Under his guidance, the annual giving to support the Intercollegiate Athletic Department also increased to record levels.

A Pittsburgh native, Battista is a 1983 graduate of the Smeal College of Business with a degree in marketing. He captained the hockey team while an undergraduate and was President of the Hockey Management Association.

Prior to his appointment with the Nittany Lion Club, Battista was the head coach of the Penn State club team for 19 years (19872006), bringing six ACHA national titles to Happy Valley. His teams played in 10 straight national championship games, and he graduated 97 percent of the participating student-athletes during that time.

Battista and his wife Heidi (Penn State BS Geology ‘81, EPC MS’83) live in State College with their three children, Brianna, Jonathon and Ryan.

Battista received ACHA Division I Coach of the Year honors in 1999-2000 and 2001-02, and won more than 500 games as a head coach. In 1991, Battista was a co-founder of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), which has since grown to a membership of close to 500 Universities and Colleges in five divisions. He is also a past president of the association. Battista also coached at Kent State University (1985-86) as a graduate assistant before moving to Culver (Ind.) Military Academy the following year (1986-87).

History

Hockey In Happy Valley EARLY YEARS Although Penn State will begin its first NCAA Division I season in 2012-13, hockey played an important role in Happy Valley dating back to the late 1890s. From that time until the early 1900s, many of Penn State’s 300 students played pickup hockey games on flooded outdoor rinks. From 1906-09, students primarily from the Pittsburgh area organized a hockey team with the intent to seek official approval for an intercollegiate varsity team by the University’s Athletic Association, which oversaw all Penn State sports. On Christmas night in 1909, the first Penn State hockey team, led by captain Herb Baetz, played its first-ever intercollegiate game against Carnegie Tech at the Duquesne Gardens in Pittsburgh. Less than a week later, Penn State’s first team took to Duquesne Gardens once more, this time facing Pittsburgh and dropping a hard-fought match, 2-1. Following their second game, Baetz and the rest of the team hoped it proved to the University that hockey would be a viable sport at Penn State. On Jan. 21, however, the University officially rejected the bid. Penn State students would fight to make hockey a varsity sport for a better part of the next two decades. Unfortunately, it seemed like more often than not an attempt to find a suitable outdoor arena, including a location at Old Beaver Field in the early 1920s near where Osmond Laboratory is today, almost always led to the plan’s downfall. Nevertheless, in the winter of 1938, the path toward varsity hockey was resurrected as eight members of the Sigma Phi fraternity formed an independent hockey team. Ten days later, the squad suited up for its first intercollegiate game against Pittsburgh at the Duquesne Gardens, the location of Penn State’s first-ever game, losing 4-0. The team remained at the club level for another two seasons. Prior to the start of the 1938-39 campaign, Dr. Carl P. Schott, Dean of the School of Physical Education and Athletics, approved appropriations of $100 for the team. Dr. Arthur F. Davis, who also coached the first four seasons of varsity hockey at Penn State, was named the team’s head coach. In the beginning of the season, the team was forced to practice indoors at the Armory building or outside on the pond at Whipple Dam, and played three games. The 1939-40 campaign saw Penn State join the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate League with the University of Pennsylvania, Hershey Jr. Cubs, Lehigh and Lafayette, as the team made a strong push to gain varsity status. During that season, Rec Hall became the team’s indoor practice facility, where Coach Davis would put the team through stick handling and puck maneuvering drills on the hard court. The

team’s “home” rink was more than 100 miles away in Hershey. Although the team traveled to Hershey for home games, the only true home contest in Penn State’s early years came on January 27, 1940, when the team was finally able to play on flooded tennis courts. Three hundred bleachers were also put in for the event. The team played 11 games during the season and compiled a 3-8-0 record.

EARLY VARSITY ERA In March 1940, Penn State took its first official step toward varsity status when hockey and skiing were put before the students at the All-College Elections. Two months later, hockey was voted as an official varsity sport as the Athletic Association approved the measure by a 651-35 majority vote. In its inaugural year as a varsity team, Penn State played its first game on Dec. 6, 1940. On that day at the Shaffer Ice Palace in Johnstown, Pa., the Nittany Lions defeated Carnegie Tech, 3-1, with John Dufford scoring the first goal in Penn State varsity history. The Nittany Lions won their first four games that season en route to a 6-3-1

Hockey In Happy Valley record. Despite the success on the ice, the team rarely practiced outside, once again using the indoor confines of Rec Hall. After the first season, the University’s Athletic Advisory Board granted hockey full status with full financial support. Up until that time, the team was able to make its own schedule and handle its own finances. Coach Davis once again led Penn State to a winning record in 1941-42, guiding the Nittany Lions to a 5-3-0 mark, with only one loss coming to a collegiate team. Going without practice for weeks at a time, the team once again was forced away from campus for practice and games as unfavorable weather kept the team iceless. During the first two seasons, the Nittany Lions relied heavily on the scoring prowess of John Dufford and the goaltending abilities of Larry Lightbody. Dufford scored at least 28 goals during his only two varsity seasons with Penn State, while Lightbody was given the team’s Outstanding

Player Award in 1941 before being elected captain for the 1941-42 season. Although Penn State garnered much success during its first two seasons and varsity hockey seemed poised to stay at Happy Valley, the United States’ involvement in World War II, combined with the lack of availability of ice on campus, had a devastating effect on the viability of Penn State Hockey. Coach Davis was steadfast in keeping hockey at the varsity level, telling the University’s student newspaper, The Penn State Collegian, “Ice Hockey will be continued, whether other collegiate competition is scheduled or not. If no other teams will accept bids, hockey will continue even if we have to resort to intrasquad contests.” With many teams dropping the sport, Penn State only played four games during the 1942-43 season, including just two collegiate contests. Despite the shortcomings, Penn State still impressed with a 2-2-0 record, twice defeating Drexel Tech before dropping contests against the Baltimore All-Stars and Washington All-Stars. Both teams proved too much for the Nittany Lions, as they were primarily comprised of former collegiate and amateur stars.

Ravaged by the war, Coach Davis and Penn State prepared for the 1943-44 season with only three members from the previous year’s squad after losing most of its members to military and civilian enrollment. Although the team only played two games against Cornell

and Army, in addition to a pair of practice sessions against the Hershey Jr. Cubs and Army Air Corps, plans once again were put into place for a new rink near Beaver Field. The plan never came to fruition. With the effects of the war being felt throughout the University, the Athletic Association announced that it would suspend six sports as a war-time economy measure. Along with hockey, cross country, swimming, gymnastics, tennis and golf all were dropped for the remainder of the war. In the winter of 1946, following two seasons of dormancy, hockey made its return for one final season. James O’Hora, a new addition to the football coaching staff, was selected to lead Penn State for the 1946-47 season. The Nittany Lions were scheduled to play seven games, but four contests were cancelled due to warm weather. In its three contests against Colgate, Army and Georgetown, Penn State was defeated in each game. Following the season, the Athletic Association dropped hockey once more, citing limited facilities.

CLUB YEARS It took almost 30 years for hockey to make its return to Penn State. Following a petition that included more than 3,000 signatures from the local community, Penn State hockey returned at the club level for the 1971-72 season. Through the course of the next 40 years, Penn State built arguably the most successful club program in the nation. Larry Hendry served as the team’s first coach and, during the early 1970s, teams were comprised of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty members before more stringent eligibility rules were put into place.

Hockey in Happy Valley During their return to campus, Penn State called three different arenas home. From 1971-78, the team played at the original Ice Pavilion, which opened in 1955, and was located near the current location of the Lasch Football Building. Following two and a half seasons (1978-81) travelling to Mechanicsburg and playing on an outdoor rink, the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, which will serve as the home of Penn State’s NCAA team in 2012-13, opened in January 1981. The Icers compiled a staggering 956-29552 record during its 40 years as a club program. In total, Penn State captured seven American Collegiate Hockey Association national championships (1984, 1990, 1998, 2000-03) and appeared in the national championship game a remarkable 10 straight seasons. The Icers suffered only two losing seasons in 40 years, with both campaigns coming within their first three seasons. Perhaps the most influential person during that era was Associate Athletic Director Joe Battista, who served as head coach for 19 years (1987-2006) and recorded a 512-120-27 mark. His teams captured six national titles and played in 10 straight title games, and he graduated 97 percent of the participating student-athletes during that time. Battista was also an instrumental figure in facilitating the largest gift in University history, an $88 million donation from Terry and Kim Pegula in September 2010, which established an NCAA Division I men’s hockey program. Penn State university President Rodney A. Erickson Rodney A. Erickson assumed responsibilities as the 17th President of The Pennsylvania State University on Nov. 9, 2011. Previously, Erickson served as Penn State’s executive vice president and provost since July 1, 1999. As executive vice president, Erickson served as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence and was centrally involved in most aspects of University operations. As provost, he was chief academic officer of the University, responsible for administration of the University’s resident instruction, research and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. Erickson is deeply committed to Penn State and to fulfilling the University’s mission of excellence in education, groundbreaking research, creative activity and service to those in Pennsylvania, the nation and the world. Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of academia, business, and government to advance education and create new knowledge to benefit the community at large. He is a highly respected academic leader, and he has chaired numerous task forces and special committees, including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, which is the academic arm of the Big Ten universities. Erickson is a former Fulbright Research Scholar in the United Kingdom and a Simon Senior Fellow at the University of Manchester. His research has focused on the spatial dimensions of urban and regional economies, international trade, and economic development policies.

Erickson formerly chaired the meetings of the Academic Leadership Council, which provides advice and counsel to the president on academic matters. He also chaired the Facilities Resources Committee, and was a member of the President’s Council, as well as an ex-officio member of the University Faculty Senate and Senate Council. He has been the leader of many University task forces in recent years, including the Task Force on Tuition, the University Cost Savings Task Force, the University Strategic Planning Council, and the Academic Program and Administrative Services Review Core Council, which was the group charged with identifying millions of dollars in permanent cost savings and nontuition revenue sources for the University for the coming years. President Erickson was named an Honorary Alumnus by the Penn State Alumni Association in 2010 for his contributions to improving the academic stature of the University and enhancing the success of students.

Erickson holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was awarded a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington in 1973. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty at Penn State in 1977. He was promoted to professor in both geography and business administration in 1984. He was named dean of the Graduate School in July 1995 and, in March 1997, he assumed the additional responsibilities of vice president for research. Among his other administrative assignments at Penn State, Erickson served as head of the Department of Geography in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and as director of the Center for Regional Business Analysis and associate director of the Division of Research in the Smeal College of Business.

Penn State University Acting Athletic Director Dr. DAve Joyner David M. Joyner was named Penn State’s acting Director of Athletics on Nov. 16, 2011. A two-sport All-American and Academic All-American at Penn State, Joyner is a physician and health care and business consultant who provides a strong background in department budget, facilities, fundraising and personnel management. “Dave Joyner has served the board with integrity, and he is internationally known for his work with the U.S. Olympic Committee. I am confident that he will bring that same integrity to his new role,” said Penn State President Rodney Erickson at the time of Joyner’s appointment. Founder, Chairman and CEO of Joyner Sports Medicine Institute (JSI) from 199298, he developed and managed 19 physical therapy centers and 350 employees in eight states to deliver state-of-the-art training and rehabilitation services honed by U.S. Olympic and Elite Medical Team experience and leadership. Closely involved with numerous campus initiatives, Joyner has served as a member of Penn State Libraries Development Advisory Board, co-chairman of the Paterno Libraries Endowment, chairman of the external advisory board for the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and the Schreyer Honors College. In 2003, as chairman of the Penn State Athletic Campaign Committee, he led a five-year effort to raise $130 million for the athletic department, far surpassing the campaign’s $100 million goal. During the

same period, as a member of the Executive Committee of the University’s Leadership Gifts Committee, he helped achieve the University’s goal to raise $745 million. He also has been a member of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Capital Campaign Committee. A member of the Penn State Board of Trustees from 2000 until the date of his appointment with Intercollegiate Athletics, Joyner was honored in 1992 as a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State. He is currently a member of the board of directors of The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Joyner’s work with the U.S. Olympic Committee includes service as head physician to the United States’ teams at the 1992 Olympic Winter Games, the 1991 World University Games and the 1989 United States Olympic Festival. He is a past chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Society. Joyner served as the chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Committee and the vice-chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Anti-Doping Committee. He currently is a member of the medical commission of the Pan American Sports Organization. Joyner served on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and has served as Chairman of USA Football’s Football and Wellness Committee and has been an emeritus member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Joyner was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1971 and is one of a select group of individuals who have been inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame, which honors “those with the highest standards in college academics, athletics and in life beyond athletics.” Joyner also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship as a Penn State student-athlete and was selected for the prestigious NCAA Silver Anniversary Award in 1997. Joyner was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1993. He earned his bachelor’s degree in science in 1972 and his M.D. from Penn State’s College of Medicine in 1976. Following residencies in general and orthopedic surgery at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and a stint in the World Football League, Joyner began a medical career with a sports medicine emphasis. Joyner’s sons, Andy and Matt, also played football at Penn State and are graduates of the University.

Penn State Athletics A Program Second to None The 2011-12 academic year marked Penn State’s 19th complete year in the Big Ten Conference. In that time, the Nittany Lions have established themselves as annual contenders in 24 Big Ten Championship sports, winning 71 titles. Penn State completed the school’s integration into the Big Ten in 1993 by joining the chase for its first-ever conference football crown and the accompanying Rose Bowl bid. The integration of the football program concluded a process that began in June 1990, with Penn State’s initial acceptance as the 11th member of the Big Ten Conference. In just its second year of Big Ten competition, Penn State won its first Big Ten and Rose Bowl championships, becoming the first conference football squad to finish with a perfect record since Ohio State in 1968 and the first ever to compile a 12-0 mark. Penn State made its Big Ten debut in 18 sports during the 199192 athletic season. The Penn State men’s and women’s basketball teams and the wrestling squad first competed in the conference in 1992-93. Boasting one of the largest intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation, Penn State fields teams in 16 men’s and 15 women’s sports. All 31 programs are funded at 100 percent scholarship levels. The breadth of the University’s athletic offerings has been matched by a generous harvest of national, regional and conference titles.
