PEGULA ICE ARENA

FUTURE HOME OF PENN STATE HOCKEY Pegula Ice Arena, which broke ground in early February 2012, will feature two ice surfaces: a main rink, home to Penn State’s varsity hockey programs, and a community rink. The main arena will feature 6,000 seats, including a 1,000-seat student section. The two-sheet facility will be home to the Nittany Lions beginning with the 2013-14 season and will feature a 5,000-square foot weight room, hydrotherapy training room, steam room, team lounge and locker room area. When visitors come to Hockey Valley, they will experience some of the best amenities college hockey has to offer. Pegula Ice Arena will feature an interactive history of Penn State Hockey, as well as concession stands, suites, loge boxes and club seats. In addition, the arena’s ability to house stateof-the-art media and broadcasting facilities will allow it to host National Hockey League and American Hockey League games, bringing hockey’s best to State College. The Centre County community will also be able to take advantage of the community rink, which will be open approximately 360 days per year for public use. The rink will seat 300 fans, feature eight locker rooms and host local youth hockey and skating programs. The facility was brought to fruition by an initial $88 million donation—the largest in University history—from Terry and Kim Pegula, who, through their gift, helped Penn State realize its goal of Division I hockey. At the ceremonial groundbreaking on April 20, 2012, the Pegulas added $14 million to the project to lift the total donation to $102 million. Pegula Ice Arena will be located near the corner of University Drive and Curtin Road, across from the Bryce Jordan Center. It will be completed in time for the 2013-14 season, coinciding with the men’s and women’s hockey teams’ second year at the varsity level. The men’s team will join the Big Ten for the 2013-14 season, while the women’s squad will begin its second year as a member of College Hockey America.

gram to its first state tournament berth in five years and a trip to the semifinals in his second season. In addition to coaching, Brandwene served as ACHA president from 1997-2004. Under his watch, the organization’s membership more than tripled to 278 teams. A women’s division was also formed in 2000 and a third men’s division was added in 1999. The longest-serving president in ACHA history, Brandwene was elected for an unprecedented three terms. Prior to that time, no president had served more than one term. He also served a twoyear stint on the American Hockey Coaches Association Board of Governors. Brandwene was elected to the ACHA Hall of Fame in 2009, the Penn State Hockey Hall of Fame in 1996 and the University of Delaware Hockey Hall of Fame in 2005. A standout defenseman for Penn State’s club hockey team, Brandwene was a member of the 1990 ACHA National Championship team. He earned both team and league MVP honors and garnered first-team All-Tournament recognition as a senior. Brandwene graduated as the program’s all-time leader in points among defensemen. Brandwene and his wife, Leona, also a Penn State graduate, have a daughter, Sophie.

On May 31, 2011, Josh Brandwene was named the first head coach of the Penn State women’s ice hockey team. Brandwene, a Penn State alumnus, brings more than 20 years of coaching and administrative experience at the international, collegiate and prep school levels to Happy Valley. Brandwene’s previous coaching experience included a stint as the Team USA’s men’s ice hockey assistant coach at the 2003 World University Games. He also served as head boys’ coach at top New England prep program Northfield Mount Hermon School (Mass.) in 2004-07, and head girls’ coach at the Kingsford Oxford School (Conn.) in 2007-10. During his two-year tenure with the Kingsford Oxford girls’ team, Brandwene successfully rebuilt the program and led the New England Division II prep school team to a runner-up finish at the Canterbury Invitational Tournament and four victories over Division I prep programs. He was then asked to take over the boys’ program in the 2010-11 season prior to arriving at Penn State. Before Kingswood Oxford, Brandwene spent three years at Northfield Mount Hermon where led the program to the 2005 New England Prep School Hockey Conference-East Championship. Brandwene’s prep school coaching was preceded by a 10-year stint leading three different American College Hockey Association (ACHA) men’s programs, beginning with a two-year stint as head coach at West Virginia (1994-96). He led the program to its first bid to the national tournament and the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season championship in its first season in the league. Brandwene then left the Mountaineers to become the head coach and director of youth hockey programs at Delaware. During his seven-year stay (1996-2003), he led the team to three straight ECHA titles and seven consecutive national tournament appearances. In 2001, Delaware advanced to the national championship game and appeared in the THE BRANDWENE FILE semifinals two years later. Head coach Josh Brandwene introduced former Boston University standout Gina Kearns as assistant coach on June 21, 2011. “I am incredibly excited to have Gina in the Penn State hockey family. Gina’s experience as a player in the first four years of a brand new college program, her oustanding leadership ability and coaching experience make her a terrific member of the staff. She is a fantastic role model for the women in our program.” Prior to Penn State, Kearns spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Neumann University, where she helped lead the team to a 16-7-4 record in 2010-11. At Boston University, the Norwood, Pa., native was a member of the university’s first NCAA Division I team. She became the program’s all-time leading scorer as she notched 52 goals and 50 assists during her four-year career. Kearns was the first Terrier to tally more than 50 goals and 100 points and was the only three-year captain in school history. Kearns led Princeton Tiger Lilies to a bronze medal at 2005 USA Hockey U-19 Nationals. She played boys’ ice hockey at Interboro High School, where she was a senior captain, and totaled 121 points in 51 games, including 81 goals. Kearns and her fiancee, Bill McLaughlin, reside in State College.

Former Holy Cross starting goaltender and New England prep school coach Casey McCullion joined the Penn State coaching staff as an assistant coach on June 4, 2012. McCullion comes to Penn State with four years of coaching experience at the New England prep school level. From 2008-10, she worked alongside head coach Josh Brandwene at Kingswood Oxford (Conn.) as an assistant coach for goaltending. McCullion was then elevated to head coach for the 2010-11 season when Brandwene took over the boys’ program. Prior to working at Kingswood Oxford, she served as an assistant coach at Deerfield Academy (Mass.) in 2007-08. A highly successful goaltending coach, McCullion instructed three netminders who participated in USA Hockey Select Player Development Camps. While at Deerfield she worked closely with Shenae Lundberg, who captured the gold medal at the 2011 world championship with the U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team. McCullion has also worked as a coach for the Ed Snider Youth Foundation and served as a goaltending instructor at Wyvern Hockey Academy. A four-year letterwinner at Holy Cross, McCullion earned the Rev. Francis J. Hart Memorial Award for commitment, leadership and performance. The former goaltender and 2007 graduate was also tabbed an ECAC East All-Academic Team member from 2005-07.

PSU HOCKEY VETERAN STROEMEL JOINS STAFF Director of Hockey Operations Mo Stroemel has served multiple roles with Penn State’s hockey programs since 1994. During the inaugural varsity season, Stroemel will also oversee the video aspects of the program. Stroemel served as head coach of Penn State’s women’s club hockey team from 2007-11, leading the team to a fifth-place finish at the 2010 national tournament and an appearance in the 2011 Eastern Collegiate Women’s Hockey League Final Four. He also served as head coach of the 2011 U.S. University Women’s Select Team at the World University Games in Turkey. Prior to working with the Lady Icers, Stroemel spent three seasons as an assistant coach for Penn State’s Division I men’s program as the team advanced to the national championship game each season. From 1996-2004, Stroemel served as head coach of PSU’s ACHA Division II men’s team and guided the squad to the national tournament four times. During his tenure, he earned ACHA Division II Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors twice. Stroemel graduated from Penn State in 1980 in advertising and earned his master’s of fine arts degree in 2002 for theatre. An avid music buff and guitarist, he resides in State College with his wife, Joan, and children, Sarah and Tom.

PENN STATE HOCKEY STORY Leading up to the historic 2010 announcement of Penn State varsity hockey, PSU fielded a club program that participated in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) since 1996.

Sept. 17, 2010: Terry and Kim Pegula (pictured below) commit the largest private gift in University history of $88 million dollars for the formation of a varsity men’s hockey team and a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose ice arena. The gift paved the way for the creation of an NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey team to begin participation in 2012-13.

June 7, 2012: Penn State announces its firstever schedule with 33 games on the slate. Also announced is a new format for the CHA Tournament where all six teams will compete for the conference title.

Sept. 6, 2011: Nearly a year after the announcement of varsity women’s ice hockey being added at Penn State, the Nittany Lions find conference allegiance with College Hockey America (CHA). It is announced Penn State will compete in its inaugural season in 2012-13. Sept. 20, 2010: Longtime Penn State intercollegiate athletics employee Joe Battista assumes position as associate athletic director of ice arena and hockey development. Feb. 15, 2011: Paul and Nancy Silvis of State College, Pa. pledge $1 million to the Pegula Ice Arena project. The main lobby of the new facility will be named after the Silvises. The couple will also co-chair the Penn State Ice Campaign Committee, which will help raise an additional funds for scholarship and program endowments. May 31, 2011: Josh Brandwene is named the first head coach of the Penn State women’s varsity ice hockey team. A coach with over 20 years of coaching experience, Brandwene returns to his alma mater (1990) after stints at Delaware, Northfield Mount Hermon School (Mass.) and Kingswood Oxford School (Conn.).

COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA

Penn State—along with Lindenwood and RIT—usher in a new era of collegiate women’s hockey when the three new teams compete in College Hockey America (CHA) this season. Now the league boasts six schools: charter member Mercyhurst College, Robert Morris University (joined 2005), Syracuse University (joined 2008), Lindenwood University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Penn State University. For the 2012-13 season, each school will play the other five schools four times (two home, two away) for a total of 20 CHA match-ups. The 2013 CHA tournament will run from March 1-9 (see bracket lower right). The six-team tournament format allows the CHA stability for the long haul and for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. On the current track, the CHA champion would be eligible for the automatic bid during for the 2014-15 season. The CHA represents all three of Pennsylvania’s Division I teams (Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Penn State), while stretching north to New York (RIT, Syracuse) and west to Missouri (Lindenwood). Mercyhurst has ruled the roost winning the regular-season CHA title in every campaign for 10 straight years. That dominance continued until the 2012 CHA Tournament when Robert Morris upset the Lakers, 3-2.

DR. RODNEY ERICKSON PENN STATE PRESIDENT MINNESOTA ‘68 (B.A.) ‘70 (M.A.) WASHINGTON ‘73 (Ph.D.)

Rodney A. Erickson assumed responsibilities as President of The Pennsylvania State University on November 9, 2011. Previously, Erickson served as Penn State’s executive vice president and provost since July 1, 1999. As executive vice president, Erickson served as the chief executive officer in the president’s absence, and was centrally involved in most operations of the University. As provost, he was chief academic officer of the University, responsible for administration of the University’s resident instruction, research and continuing education, and for the general welfare of the faculty and students. Erickson holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Minnesota, and earned a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Washington in 1973. He began his academic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the faculty at Penn State in 1977. He was promoted to professor in both geography and business administration in 1984. He was named dean of the Graduate School in July 1995, and in March 1997 he assumed the additional responsibilities of vice president for research.

Among his other administrative assignments at Penn State, Erickson served as head of the Department of Geography in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, and as director of the Center for Regional Business Analysis and associate director of the Division of Research in the Smeal College of Business. Erickson also served as chair of the Academic Leadership Council, which provides advice and counsel to the president on academic matters. He also was part of the Facilities Resources Committee, and a member of President’s Council, as well as an ex-officio member of the University Faculty Senate and Senate Council. He has been the leader of many task forces in recent years, including the Task Force on Tuition, the University Cost Savings Task Force, and the University Strategic Planning Council. Erickson also oversaw the Academic Program and Administrative Services Review Core Council, which is the group charged with identifying $10 million in permanent cost savings and nontuition revenue sources for the University for the coming fiscal year.

He currently is a member of the medical commission of the Pan American Sports Organization.
