Jeff Tamboni will enter his second season as head coach of the Penn State men’s lacrosse team in 2012. The 2011 CAA Co-Coach of the Year, Tambroni led the Nittany Lions to a 7-7 record and their first-ever CAA tournament berth during his first year at the program’s helm. In 2011, eight Nittany Lions garnered All-CAA recognition and freshman goalkeeper Austin Kaut earned Rookie of the Year honors while being named a USILA Honorable Mention All-American. Prior to Penn State, Tambroni spent 10 seasons as head coach at Cornell (2001-10). He guided the Big Red to a 109-40 record and three NCAA Final Four appearances (2007, 2009-10), including the 2009 national championship game. Tambroni was named USILA Division I Coach of the Year following the 2009 season and was tabbed the 2007 and 2009 Field Turf/NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Tambroni was also the 2004 and 2009 Ithaca Journal Male Coach of the Year and a three-time National Coach of the Week. While at Cornell, Tambroni became the 10th-fastest coach to reach the 100-win mark when he accomplished the feat in his 134th career game in March 2010. During his tenure, his players earned 37 first-team All-Ivy honors, including five Ivy League awards, and three conference Rookie of the Year selections. In addition, 39 players garnered All-America recognition. Prior to serving as Cornell’s head coach, he spent four seasons as a Big Red assistant coach (1997-2000). Tambroni also served as assistant coach at Loyola College in 1997 and at his alma mater, Hobart College, for three seasons. With the Statesmen, he helped the program reach the 1994 NCAA Division III national championship game. A 1992 graduate, Tambroni earned his bachelor’s degree in American studies. He earned first-team All-America honors as a senior and was twice named a second-team All-American (199091). The MVP of the 1990 NCAA title game, Tambroni helped lead the team to back-to-back NCAA championships (1990-91) and left Hobart tied for seventh on the school’s all-time scoring list with 202 points.

Before embarking upon his collegiate coaching career, Tambroni coached the Heaton Mersey Lacrosse Club of the English Lacrosse Union for one year and served as a visiting coach for the Czech-American Lacrosse Foundation in Prague in the summer of 1996. Tambroni and his wife, Michelle, have three daughters, Carissa, Madison and Ella. Michelle played field hockey at Penn State from 1988-90 and earned All-America honors as a senior.

ASSISTANT COACHES A 2003 graduate of Springfield College, Toner worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater for two seasons (2004-05). As a player, he

A twotime captain, Toner garnered All-New England honors and was one of two intercollegiate men’s lacrosse players to garner National Strength and Conditioning Association All-America recognition In May 2005, Toner earned his master’s degree from Springfield in physical education with a concentration in athletic administration.

ASSISTANT COACH Peter Toner will enter his second season as an assistant coach with the Penn State men’s lacrosse team in 2012. During his first season, the Nittany Lions went 7-7 and made the CAA tournament for the first time. Prior to Penn State, Toner spent three seasons as associate head coach at Bryant (2008-10), where he served as the team’s defensive and recruiting coordinators. He helped guide the Bulldogs through their transition to Division I as the team went a combined 22-10 during its first two seasons at the nation’s top level. Before working at Bryant, Toner served as head coach of Wheaton College for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. During his first season, the Lyons enjoyed their best campaign in school history as they went 10-6 en route to a berth in the ECAC Division II championship game.

Chris Doctor will enter his second season as an assistant coach with the Penn State men’s lacrosse team in 2012. During his first season, the Nittany Lions went 7-7 and made the CAA tournament for the first time. Prior to Penn State, Doctor served as offensive coordinator at Lafayette for four seasons (2007-10). With the Leopards, Doctor assisted with planning daily practices and recruiting. He helped coach seven All-Patriot League players and a league Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year. At Lafayette, Doctor helped coach the nation’s leader in goals per game in 2009 and, in 2010, the team finished among the nation’s top ten in goals per game as Lafayette made the Patriot League tournament for the first time in program history. A four-year letter-winner at Rutgers (2004-07), Doctor earned the team’s Alfred Sasser Award as both a junior and senior for leading the team in assists. During his career, the Scarlet Knights recorded 29 victories in four seasons.

SHRIVER

Former Georgetown attackman David Shriver will enter his first season as volunteer assistant coach in 2012. With the Nittany Lions, Shriver will assist with the offense, working primarily with the extra-man unit and the development of the team’s offensive personnel. A four-year letter-winner for the Hoyas (2008-11), Shriver appeared in 28 career games and totaled eight points (7g, 1a). In high school, the Baltimore native helped lead the Boys’ Latin School to the 2006 MIAA “A” Conference title and a national championship with a perfect 21-0 record. He earned the program’s Gelston Cup, which was presented for unique contributions to the team. A three-sport athlete, Shriver also garnered the Kelly Award for Devotion to Boys’ Latin Athletics and the Team Spirit Award in basketball. Shriver also played one season at the Salisbury School, compiling 46 points (36g, 10a) in 2007.

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK Following a five-win improvement in 2011, preseason No. 17 Penn State men’s lacrosse looks to build off a 7-7 campaign that saw the program reach the Colonial Athletic Association semifinal round for the first time. Despite suffering a heartbreaking loss in the league playoffs, the Nittany Lions are poised to make even greater strides in head coach Jeff Tambroni’s second season. “I think in the first year there’s an excitement of new beginnings, but there are the challenges of relationship building, teaching a new system and, for the guys, understanding and learning a new system,” said Tambroni. “In the second year, you’re going back into routine. We know each other a lot better in terms of expectations and personalities. I think we’re going to be a much better prepared team earlier in the season.” The 2012 Nittany Lions will feature a veteran group, including eight starters from last year’s squad, which will look to qualify for its third NCAA tournament appearance in program history. Among the returnees include six players who received end-of-year conference laurels, including two-time All-CAA First Team honoree Matthew Mackrides (Newtown Square). Mackrides, along with fellow seniors Ryan Link (Englewood, Colo.) and Ryan McGarvey (Lower Gwynedd), will serve as captains for the 2012 season. Mackrides is the first two-time captain since a trio of Nittany Lions held the role during the 1996-97 seasons. “I think each of our captains provide something different but together they provide great camaraderie and chemistry at the top,” said Tambroni, who was named 2011 CAA Co-Coach of the Year. “We’ve also established a leadership cabinet that’s compiled of seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. They’re excited to set a standard that’s potentially never been done before at Penn State.” Penn State will open the season against sixth-ranked North Carolina in Kennesaw, Ga., Feb. 11.

With all three starters – senior Jack Forster (Jenkintown), Mackrides and sophomore Shane Sturgis (Downingtown) – returning from a season ago, the attack unit boasts a great deal of experience for the Nittany Lions. Sturgis, who was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team, led the team with 34 points (18g, 16a), while Mackrides ranked second (30) and Forster was tied for third (15).

“I think from top to bottom, we have what we believe will be a formidable attack unit,” Tambroni added. “I’m hoping the productivity of that group will propel our offense into a whole different category and take some pressure off our defense.”

Forster will enter his fifth season with the Nittany Lions after losing both the 2008 and 2010 seasons due to injuries. He bounced back in 2011 with 14 goals and one assist and will be looked for greater leadership in his final season. “As you look at Jack Forster coming back from a knee injury, he was a little limited last year,” said Tambroni. “He’s an extremely respected leader of our team and has shown great persistence staying another year to compete and play.” In addition, sophomores Gavin Ahern (Rockville Centre, N.Y./) and Steve Aitken (Wayne) and freshmen Pat Manley (Arnold, Md.) and Bryan Gerrato (Rockville

MIDFIELD After utilizing a young group of midfielders a season ago, the Nittany Lions will enter the 2012 season with a core of veterans who will propel a much-improved midfield unit. With a mix of key returners and a fresh group of newcomers, the coaching staff expects higher production from the unit this season. “We have a lot of returners who played considerable minutes and a group of players who played several minutes together so we’re hoping the chemistry and productivity will increase,” said Tambroni. “We have a lot of players to choose from and it’s a matter of finding two units that can give us a one-two punch that is needed in the offensive end.” Leading the way for Penn State on the offensive side will be junior Nick Dolik

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), who tallied 13 points (11g, 2a) a year ago en route to All-CAA Second Team recognition. Classmates Drew Roper (Columbus, Ohio) and Kyle VanThof (Penfield, N.Y.), both of whom played significant minutes during the 2011 season, will also add leadership to the unit. In addition, sophomore Tom LaCrosse (Canandaigua, N.Y.) will be relied upon to provide strong play and leadership as a two-way midfielder. “Our two-way midfield play will be an important facet to our offense and defense this year,” Tambroni stated. “Tom plays with such tenacity and will be an important leader for that unit.” The Nittany Lions will also use a combination of freshmen and attackmen to fill in the gaps, including newcomers Kyle Baier (Auburn, N.Y.), Riley Lasda (Ithaca, N.Y.), Erik Myers (Del Mar, Calif.) and Kyle Zittel (Eden, N.Y.), who have quickly acclimated to learning the team’s system and will battle for time on the first two midfield units. DEFENSE

After losing several key contributors from a season ago, Penn State will look to a largely inexperienced group on defense. “We lost quite a bit of veteran personnel and we have our hands full in creating some chemistry and a lineup that understands the defense,” Tambroni said. “As we move into the spring, a lot of different people played a lot of minutes in practice and competitive scrimmages. McGarvey will anchor the group at the long-stick position and, along with sophomores Kessler Brown (Springfield, Va.), Ryan Mullen (Hatboro) and Ryne Sternberg (Toronto, Ont.) and freshmen JP Burnside (Garden City, N.Y.) and Jack Donnelly (Toronto, Ont.), will form an athletic, intelligent and disciplined group.

The Morton, Pa., native also led the NCAA in save percentage (.635) and saves per game (13.64) and ranked 10th in goalsagainst average (7.90). “I’m not sure we could have asked any more of a freshman in terms of leadership, ability, save percentage and the role he played within the clear,” said Tambroni. “We hope he’ll continue to grow and become more of a leader on defense, helping all our newcomers to grow under his guidance. We’re very optimistic that he’ll grow as a leader and player, and provide the same amount of impact he had last year.”

One of the strengths of the defense will be the Nittany Lions’ short-stick unit, which will feature Link, junior transfer Travis Crane (Parkville, Md.) and freshmen Michael Richards (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Taylor Stothoff (Sparks, Md.).

“Our staff attempted to prepare this year’s schedule because we believe in our team and we believe in the preparation it will provide,” said Tambroni. “When you play against a team that is traditionally in the top 10, you can set a barometer about the standard that needs to be set. It will make them battle-tested and, as long as you can weather the storm, provide great confidence.”
