The main arena seats 5,782 fans, including a 1,000-seat student section. The two-sheet facility is home to the Nittany Lions. The building hosts a 5,000-square foot weight room, hydrotherapy training room, steam room, team lounge and locker room area. When visitors come to Hockey Valley, they will experience some of the best amenities college hockey has to offer. Pegula Ice Arena has an interactive history of Penn State Hockey, as well as concession stands, suites, loge boxes and club seats. In addition, the arena’s ability to house state-of-the-art media and broadcasting facilities will allow it to host National Hockey League and American Hockey League games, bringing hockey’s best to Hockey Valley. The Centre County community will also be able to take advantage of the community rink, which will be open approximately 360 days per year for public use. The rink will seat 300 fans, feature eight locker rooms and host local youth hockey, university recreation and skating programs. The facility was brought to fruition by an initial $88 million donation—the largest in University history—from Terry and Kim Pegula, who, through their gift, helped Penn State realize its goal of Division I hockey. At the ceremonial groundbreaking on April 20, 2012, the Pegulas added $14 million to the project to lift the total donation to $102 million. Pegula Ice Arena is located on University Drive near Curtin Road across from the Bryce Jordan Center.

ASSISTANT COACH First Year MERCYHURST ‘09
INTERIM ASSISTANT COACH Second Year UTICA ‘12
New assistant coach Courtney Drennen begins her first year with the Nittany Lions in 2014-15. Drennen will be the primary goaltender instructor and assist in recruiting and game planning. During her two-year stint at Wesleyan University, Drennen helped steer the program from a 4-20-0 overall record in the year before she arrived in Middletown, Connecticut (2011-12) to a 8-116 mark in the 2013-14 season. The Cardinals allowed 89 goals in that 2011-12 season (3.71 goals against per game), but gave up just 53 goals under Drennen’s tutelage (2.12 allowed per game) in 2013-14. While at North Dakota (2009-12), Drennen was the goalie coach and video coordinator. In 2011-12, North Dakota finished with a 22-12-3 record and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. While at UND, Drennen began her Master’s degree in Public History. In 2010-11, Drennen was also the girls’ player development director for the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association. Drennen is a 2009 graduate of Mercyhurst University, a Penn State rival in College Hockey America, compiling a record of 26-42 between the pipes for the Lakers. After her time at Mercyhurst, she joined the North Dakota coaching staff for three seasons before arriving at Wesleyan University. As a Mercyhurst student-athlete, Drennen was part of some of the most successful teams in Laker history, including the 2008-09 squad that reached the Women’s Frozen Four title game. Drennen started 30 of the 37 games in which she played, compiling a .927 save percentage and a 1.42 GAA with eight shutouts. Mercyhurst went an impressive 112-24-12 during her four years in Erie.
Alex Dawes enters his second year at Penn State, his first as interim assistant coach. Last July, Dawes was brought on board to serve as Penn State’s director of operations. A 2012 graduate of Utica, he served as director of operations/student assistant coach of the Pioneer men’s team (2009-12). At Penn State, Dawes is now a member of the on-ice coaching staff with the team. He’ll continue to oversee the day-to-day operation of the program including game scheduling, away trip management, home game day coordination, video operator and editor. While at Utica, Dawes primarily oversaw the day-to-day operations of the men’s hockey team and helped develop video breakdowns. Additionally, Dawes assisted in Utica’s recruiting efforts and the team’s expenditures. During his time at UC, the Pioneers improved every season, going from a 8-14-4 record in 2009-10 to a 21-6-1 record in 2012-13 en route to the NCAA Division III Semifinals. Dawes also played a part in Utica College’s fundraising effort. Prior to Utica, Dawes spent his freshman year, 2008-09, at Vermont as a student video coordinator and director of hockey operations. That year, the Catamounts reached the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time since 1996 as he created all video breakdowns and was responsible for logistical and physical operations.
In addition to her experience at Wesleyan and North Dakota, Drennen has been an instructor for ProCrease Goaltending Institute since 2012 as well as the te USA Hockey National Festival Camps (2010-12). 2014-15 NITTANY LIONS
PENN STATE PREVIEW season three
The third year of Penn State women’s hockey at the varsity level looks to make 2014-15 the most successful campaign yet. With 16 letterwinners, nine of its top 10 scorers and 80 percent of its scoring returning from last season, this year’s Penn State squad is poised to take the next step. Add to the mix an experienced junior goaltender who led the team in wins along with eight talented freshmen and a transfer forward and the recipe is there for success. The Nittany Lions will especially call upon 2013-14 leading scorers Hannah Hoenshell (5 goals, 12 assists), Laura Bowman (10 goals, 6 assists), Shannon Yoxheimer (8 goals, 8 assists) and Amy Petersen (5 goals, 10 assists). Hoenshell led PSU with two game-winning goals last season, including the program’s first overtime goal against Colgate in January. Bowman was named to the 2013-14 All-CHA Rookie Team, while Yoxheimer earned the same honor in 2012-13 thanks to a 31-point season.
O CAPTAIN(S)! MY CAPTAIN(S)!
Without a senior on the squad, three juniors and a sophomore have been called upon to be the leaders on and off the ice.

Penn State has the luxury of possibly trotting out six returning members of its defense who have accounted for a combined 312 games played. Unlike the past two years where PSU’s defensive experience was trumped by its opponents’ offensive maturity, the Nittany Lions will flip the script in year three. Led by Pardoski and Wilkie, Jeanette Bateman (70 games) and Paige Jahnke (69 games) lend the Lions needed experience that two years of games provides. Sophomore Kelly Seward was a breakout star for Penn State in 2013-14 as her length and skill gave opposing offenses fits. She also rocketed in three goals from the point with a potent shot. Junior Stephanie Walkom (21 games) has proven effective the past two seasons by stepping up when her teammates have succumbed to injuries. Walkom was named PSU’s most improved player in 2012-13 by the coaching staff. Newcomers to the defensive regime are Shoreview, Minn. native Bella Sutton and Littleton, Colo. product Remi Martin. Depending on the opponent, the versatile Irene Kiroplis could feature on the blue line as well as on a forward line.
Yoxheimer, along with fellow junior Jordin Pardoski, will lead the Nittany Lions as captains. Pardoski, one of two current Nittany Lions to play in every varsity game, will lead from the blue line. Pardoski is Penn State’s all-time leader in goals (6), assists (12) and points (18) by a defenseman. Another Penn State blue liner, junior Sarah Wilkie, will be one of two alternate captains along with Bowman. Wilkie, one of the strongest leaders in the locker room, is a tough-nosed, bright defenseman who played just 19 games last year due to a seasonending injury in mid-January.
CALIFORNIAN SET TO SHINE IN NET ONCE AGAIN
Junior goaltender Celine Whitlinger is ready to be the No. 1 option this year after splitting time in net the past two seasons. The 5-8 Californian has led the Nittany Lions in save percentage (.923) and saves per game (37.44) during her two years in Hockey Valley. Last year, Whitlinger made 559 saves in nearly 900 minutes of action, earning a team-high three wins. Whitlinger won’t be alone this year as a talented rookie in Hannah Ehresmann will search for minutes in the crease. Ehresmann, who has been reunited with former Minnetonka High School teammates Bowman and Petersen, is a highly touted newcomer who will push Whitlinger during the year. Fellow newcomer Amber Greene also adds depth to the goaltending corps. 12 2014-15 // PENN STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY

PENN STATE PREVIEW DEEP OFFENSIVE LINES READY TO PRODUCE
Penn State’s most robust offense in its three-year history is ready to take the ice this October. Hoenshell, Bowman, Yoxheimer and Petersen alone accounted for 64 of the team’s 120 points last season, and the foursome will have some extra help this year. Minnesota freshmen forwards Caitlin Reilly and Christi Vetter add to Penn State’s firepower in 2014-15. Reilly, a left-winger, tallied 209 points in her four-year career at Benilde St. Margaret’s and last year scored 44 goals and 40 assists as a senior, which culminated in a state finals appearance. Vetter tallied 163 points in four years of hockey at Lakeview North, leading the squad to a pair of finals appearances in the state tournament. Vetter was a member of the USA Hockey U18 National Team in 2012 and was one of the final cuts for the 2013 World Championship team that earned silver in Finland. Another key addition to the offensive ranks is that of Hannah Bramm, a junior transfer from national powerhouse Minnesota Duluth. Bramm played in 63 games for the Bulldogs, compiling 13 points on four goals and nine assists.
Those three newcomers help bolster a veteran crew of juniors Jill Holdcroft (14 career goals), Emily Laurenzi (14 career points) and Kendra Rasmussen, who played defense for much of the last half of the 2013-14 campaign. Sarah Nielsen, a key center, and speedster Micayla Catanzariti, round out Penn State’s returning offensive weapons. Newcomer Aly Hardy also looks to help the Nittany Lion offense as a freshman.
DIFFICULT SCHEDULE AWAITS NITTANY LIONS
After playing a full-fledged Division I schedule in 2013-14 that featured four games against NCAA Women’s Frozen Four participant Mercyhurst and 17 contests against the top 15 in the PairWise rankings, PSU is set for another challenging slate this season. The toughest opponent of the year will come in game one (Oct. 3) as the NIttany Lions travel to perennial powerhouse and last year’s NCAA runner-up, Minnesota. The Golden Gophers had their quest for a fourth-straight title upended by Clarkson in the title game last year. The next day, Penn State will play St. Cloud State at UM’s Ridder Arena. Other key difficult non-conference matchups are against a pair of top ECAC Hockey squads in Quinnipiac (Oct. 11-12) and Princeton (Oct. 26-27) at Pegula Ice Arena. PSU’s other non-conference home series is against Ohio State (Jan. 3-4) as the Buckeyes visit Hockey Valley. Away non-conference series bring the Nittany Lions to Union (Oct. 17-18), Colgate (Nov. 7-8) and New Hampshire (Jan. 23-24). All three series are rematches from last year. In conference play, the much improved CHA will be more contested than ever now that the league has an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament awaiting the season’s conclusion. Mercyhurst won its 13th straight regular-season crown, but RIT won the tournament over the Lakers. Robert Morris was the first team left out of the NCAA Tournament a year ago after a programrecord 24 wins. RIT finished third last year and eliminated PSU in the first-round playoffs for the second straight year en route to its first CHA Tournament win. Syracuse finished fourth a year ago, but was second in 2012-13 and is poised for another solid year in chase of Mercyhurst. The Nittany Lions again play four games against Lindenwood, who have finished fifth the past two seasons in the CHA.

COLLEGE HOCKEY AMERICA HISTORY
Penn State—along with Lindenwood and RIT—ushered in a new era of collegiate women’s hockey when the three new teams compet- ed in College Hockey America (CHA) during the 2012-13 season. Now the league boasts six schools: charter member Mercyhurst College, Robert Morris University (joined 2005), Syracuse University (joined 2008), Lindenwood University, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Penn State University. The 2014-15 season represents the first year where the CHA Tournament winner will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. For the third straight season, each school will play the other five schools four times (two home, two away) for a total of 20 CHA matchups. The 2014 CHA tournament will run from Feb. 27-March 7 (see bracket lower right). The six-team tournament format matches the lowest four seeds in three-game series hosted by the No. 3 and 4 seeds. Those series winners move up to the semifinals hosted by the No. 1 seed, who also hosts the final. The CHA represents all three of Pennsylvania’s Division I teams (Mercyhurst, Robert Morris, Penn State), while stretching north to New York (RIT, Syracuse) and west to Missouri (Lindenwood). Mercyhurst has ruled the roost winning the regular-season CHA title in every campaign for 12 straight years. The only blips in its dominance have come in the past three seasonas Robert Morris and RIT captured tournament titles in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

PENN STATE UNIVERSITY A LAND GRANT INSTITUTION Penn State’s historic mission of teaching, research, and public service — launched under the most modest of circumstances more than 150 years ago — now reaches into virtually all parts of Pennsylvania. Consider, for example, that the University now has 24 campuses across the Commonwealth, putting a Penn State education within practical reach of nearly every Pennsylvanian. In fact, nearly 75 percent of Penn State’s undergraduates are Pennsylvania residents. Penn State is Pennsylvania’s largest nongovernmental employer and has employees and expenditures in every one of its 67 counties. The University generates a total economic impact across the Commonwealth that surpasses $8.5 billion annually. Part of that impact is derived from Penn State’s research program, which brings more than $500 million in federal funds to Pennsylvania each year, and an additional $100 million from private industry. Penn State’s outreach and online programs — ranging from 4H to Cooperative Extension, from summer camps to public broadcasting — provide educational and service programs to more than a million Pennsylvania households annually. The University’s presence throughout Pennsylvania today contrasts sharply with its humble beginnings. Chartered as a college of scientific agriculture, the institution was located in rural Centre County after James Irvin, a partner in the Centre Furnace iron works (remains of which can be seen today along East College Avenue), offered to donate 200 acres of farmland for a campus. Founding President Evan Pugh wanted the fledging institution to embody a new approach to higher education that blended classical studies with subjects that had practical value. He joined similar visionaries in other states in convincing Congress to pass

the Morrill Land-Grant Act in 1862. The act gave individual states tracts of federal land to sell; the proceeds supported colleges that agreed to include engineering, science and the liberal arts as well as agriculture in their course of studies. In 1863, the Pennsylvania legislature designated Penn State the Commonwealth’s sole land-grant institution. The lawmakers in effect bestowed on the privately incorporated college a public character. In return for state support, the institution assumed obligations of teaching, research and service that are normally associated with publicly owned land-grant universities in other states. By the 1890s Penn State was making its mark. It ranked among the nation’s 10 largest undergraduate engineering schools, a distinction it still holds. It established one of the nation’s first collegiate agricultural experiment stations, and Professor Whitman Jordan’s pioneering research on using fertilizers for soil enrichment had global impact on crop yields. Penn State in 1871 became one of the first land-grant schools in the Northeast to admit women, graduated its first international student in 1890, and its first African-American student in 1905. In the early 1900s, President Edwin E. Sparks supported a number of efforts to “carry the college to the people,” as he liked to say. Technical institutes were established in various locations statewide for engineering education, beginning with an evening school in Allentown in 1910. In 1912, Penn State helped create a system of county agents in agriculture and home economics. Today, the Penn State World Campus, with its “anywhere, anytime” learning through the Internet, builds on that outreach tradition. But undergraduate education remained foremost. Enrollment surpassed 5,000 students by 1936, including those attending several undergraduate centers that were created for students

who, in the depths of the Great Depression, could not afford to leave their hometowns to get a college education. The centers offered the first year of baccalaureate studies and were the predecessors of today’s statewide system of campuses. Thanks to this innovative approach to higher education, Penn State in the 1930s became Pennsylvania’s largest single source of baccalaureate degrees, a distinction it holds to this day. Following World War II, Penn State underwent unprecedented expansion, first to meet the needs of returning military veterans and later to accommodate the Baby Boom generation. Total enrollment at all Penn State campuses climbed to 40,000 by 1970. The University also emerged on the national scene as a research powerhouse in fields as diverse as dairy science, acoustics, psychology, and diesel engineering. The expansion of research went hand in hand with a steady increase in the number of graduate students. The University awarded its first graduate degree — a master’s degree in scientific agriculture — in 1862, and the Graduate School was established in 1922. But overall graduate enrollment remained modest until the 1950s, then swelled steadily. In the past ten years alone, Penn State had awarded more than 30,000 master’s, doctoral, and other advanced degrees. The University Park campus is Penn State’s administrative and research hub. In addition, there are 19 primarily undergraduate campuses; Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, including the College of Medicine; the Pennsylvania College of Technology; the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, Carlisle campus; the Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies; and the Penn State World Campus. To date, Penn State has awarded nearly 750,000 degrees, hallmarks of an educational experience second to none in quality. In addition, Penn State alumni — including 327,000 in Pennsylvania alone — have job- and social-networking opportunities that no other college or university in the Commonwealth can surpass.
Penn State’s athletic symbol, chosen by the student body in 1906, is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. H.D. “Joe” Mason, a member of the Class of 1907, conducted a one-man campaign to choose a school mascot after seeing the Princeton tiger on a trip with the Penn State baseball team to that New Jersey campus. A student publication sponsored the campaign to select a mascot and Penn State is believed to be the first college to adopt the lion as a mascot. Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany (or Nita-Nee) was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. A later namesake, daughter of chief O-Ko-Cho, who lived near the mouth of Penn’s Creek, fell in love with Malachi Boyer, a trader. The tearful maiden and her lost lover became legend and her name was given to the stately mountain.
LION SHRINE
Penn State’s Nittany Lion shrine was dedicated on Oct. 24, 1942, during Homecoming Weekend. Animal sculptor Heinz Warneke and stonecutter Joseph Garatti molded a 13-ton block of Indiana limestone into the most recognizable symbol of Penn State. The shrine was chosen from six models submitted by Warneke. The shrine is a gift of the Class of 1940 and rests in a natural setting of trees near Recreation Building. The site was chosen because of its accessibility, the surrounding trees and the fact that the sculpture would not be dwarfed by nearby buildings.
BLUE & WHITE
Penn State’s student-athletes are instantly identified by their blue and white uniforms — but those weren’t the original school colors. A three-member committee representing the sophomore, junior and senior classes was appointed in October of 1887 to develop color options from which the student body would select the school’s official colors. Dark pink and black was the unanimous choice of the student body after considering the color combinations presented by the committee. Soon many students and the baseball team were sporting pink and black striped blazers and caps. However, problems arose when the pink faded to white after several weeks of exposure to the sun. The students then opted for blue, rather than black, and white. The official announcement of the new choice was made on March 18, 1890.

PRESIDENT P
ERIC J. BARRON PENN STATE PRESIDENT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY ‘72 (B.S.) UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ‘76 (M.S.), ‘80 (Ph.D.)
Eric J. Barron, former dean at Penn State and former president of Florida State University, began his presidency at Penn State on May 12, 2014. Succeeding former President Rodney Erickson, who had served since 2011, Dr. Barron was named the 18th President of Penn State by the University’s Board of Trustees February 17, 2014. Dr. Barron returned to Penn State from the helm at Florida State, bringing with him nearly 35 years of leadership experience in academic administration, education, research, and public service, and a track record as a talented manager of fiscal policy within large and complex institutions. Dr. Barron led Florida State to two consecutive U.S. News and World Report rankings as the nation’s “most efficiently operated” institution of higher education. Dr. Barron served as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and founding director of the Earth System Science Center during his previous years at Penn State. Dr. Barron earned a bachelor of science degree in geology at Florida State in 1973 before moving on to the University of Miami, where he earned master’s and doctoral degrees in oceanography, in 1976 and 1980, respectively. Dr. Barron spent 20 years of his career at Penn State, serving as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences from 2002 to 2006, and as founding director of the Earth System Science Center, one of the first major initiatives focused on the total study of Earth as a system, from 1986 to 2002. He also had a simultaneous appointment as director of the Earth and Mineral Sciences Environment Institute from 1998 to 2002. In 1999, he was named Distinguished Professor of Geosciences at Penn State, and during his tenure as director, Industry Week magazine ranked him among “50 R&D Stars to Watch.” An accomplished scientist with a long background in atmospheric research, Dr. Barron served as director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) from 2008 to 2010 and as dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin from 2006 to 2008. Early in his career he was a postdoctoral research fellow and scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, a federal research center focusing on atmospheric and related science issues. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS AD
SANDY BARBOUR
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY ‘81 (B.A.) MASSACHUSETTS ‘83 (M.S.); NORTHWESTERN ‘91 (M.B.A.)
Sandy Barbour began her leadership of the Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics program on August 18, 2014. President Eric J. Barron named Barbour the Nittany Lions’ ninth Director of Athletics on July 26, 2014 after serving 10 years as Director of Athletics at the University of California. Barbour brings to Penn State more than 30 years of varied experiences as a collegiate administrator and coach, with a demonstrated record of championships, academic success, innovation, facility modernization and revenue growth. Barbour directs Penn State’s 31-sport, broad-based program that supports approximately 850 student-athletes and an Intercollegiate Athletics staff of more than 300.
Serving as the Director of Athletics at Cal since 2004, Barbour guided the Golden Bears through one of the most successful periods in school history. Under her direction, the athletic department became one of the consistently elite programs in the country. Barbour’s 10-year term as AD was the longest tenure for the department since men’s and women’s athletics merged into a single entity in 1992. During her tenure overseeing Cal’s 30-sport program, the Golden Bears won 20 team national championships, 97 individual national titles, finished in the top 10 in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings six times, including a program-best third in 2011, and reached record levels in ticket sales, sponsorships and fundraising. Cal student-athletes continued their high academic achievement in 2013-14, with numerous programs earning public recognition from the NCAA on the Academic Progress Rate and Graduation Success Rate metrics with 100 percent scores. New coach Sonny Dykes led a resurgence in the football program’s academic achievement with a 969 APR score, 18 points higher than the Division I football average, and a record-setting program GPA. Under Barbour’s leadership, the average grade-point average for Cal’s 30 teams was nearly 3.0 and the women’s golf team achieved the highest team GPA in Cal’s recorded history when it posted a 3.54 GPA during the fall 2013 semester. More than 175 student-athletes annually earned academic all-conference notice, and 17 teams received national recognition for their NCAA Academic Progress Rates over the last five years. Prior to moving to Berkeley, Barbour was the deputy director of athletics at Notre Dame, serving as the university’s senior athletic administrator from July 2002 to September 2004. She previously held an associate athletic director position there starting in 2000. Barbour’s career in intercollegiate athletic
administration spans more than 30 years, beginning as a field hockey assistant coach and lacrosse administrative assistant at the University of Massachusetts in 1981. She has since served as assistant athletic director at Northwestern and in 1991 was recruited to Tulane as an associate athletic director. In 1996, Barbour was appointed Tulane’s director of athletics at age 36, and during her three years overseeing the program, Green Wave teams won 12 conference championships. In her first year in the position, the school captured four conference titles, a feat never before accomplished in Tulane history. She also hired Tommy Bowden as head football coach during her first year. Bowden proceeded in 1997 to post the Green Wave’s first winning season (7-4) in 16 years, and then directed the school to a 12-0 record, a Conference USA championship and a No. 7 national ranking the following season as the 1998 Liberty Bowl champions. Born Dec. 2, 1959, in Annapolis, Md., Barbour grew up in a military family. Her father was a career aviator in the U.S. Navy, and her family lived in various U.S. locations as well as in Western Europe during her childhood. Barbour graduated cum laude in 1981 with a B.S. degree in physical education from Wake Forest, where she was a four-year letterwinner and served as captain of the field hockey team. She also played two varsity seasons of women’s basketball. Barbour earned advanced degrees at both Massachusetts (an M.S. in sports management in 1983) and Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management (an M.B.A. in 1991). Between master’s programs, Barbour served as assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Northwestern from 1982-84. She also held the position of director of recruiting services during that period, before being promoted to assistant athletic director for intercollegiate programs in 1984, a position she held until 1989. 63 2014-15 // WELCOME TO HOCKEY VALLEY
