MARK
PAVLIK
23rd year at Penn State Career Record: 543-173 ALMA MATER: PENN STATE, 1982
Having been involved in all aspects of the Penn State men's volleyball program as a player, assistant coach and head coach, 2008 AVCA National Coach of the Year Mark Pavlik now enters his 21st year at the helm of the Nittany Lion men's volleyball team in Happy Valley. Capturing the 2008 NCAA National Championship and helping to build the Nittany Lions into one of the premier men's volleyball powers in the nation, Pavlik has compiled a career record of 543-173, winning 77 percent of his matches. Within the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA), Pavlik's teams have been even more dominating, racking up 234 wins and only suffering 12 league losses in 22 years. A 1982 graduate of Penn State and the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2014 EIVA Coach of the Year, Pavlik has experienced Penn State from all perspectives. As a player, he was a setter under legendary coach Tom Tait. For five years prior to his promotion, Pavlik served as Coach Tom Peterson's top assistant. During that time, the Nittany Lions compiled a 111-39 record and made four NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by the 1994 national title. Pavlik's experience and expertise has not gone unnoticed or unrecognized by those in the volleyball community. "Mark has developed not only one of the best programs in the East, but one of the most outstanding programs in the nation," said USA Volleyball CEO and former longtime USA Men's Volleyball Head Coach Doug Beal. "His teams compete with class at the highest levels, yearin and year-out. Mark brings an unusual passion and thoughtfulness, along with a special rapport with his team every year. USA Volleyball is fortunate to have coaches like Mark coaching at the collegiate level, working with athletes and growing the sport." Drawing from his experiences, Pavlik has developed a unique coaching philosophy that stresses hard work in practice, a relaxed approach to competition, and a determination to develop the well-rounded person and student-athlete. "I feel that the coach's role is extremely critical in training and creating the environment in which the team can improve," Pavlik said. "I think I am more concerned about practices than I am about matches.
Pavlik has coached 25 different players to 47 All-America awards, including two AVCA National Players of the Year. ••• in the middle of this storm, and that is where the calm is supposed to be." Pavlik has guided some of the nation's greatest players during his tenure. In 1997, he coached Ivan Contreras to the AVCA Player of the Year honor and in 2008 Matt Anderson earned the same award, the only times an Eastern player has earned the prestigious honor. He has coached 21 different players (Ivan Contreras, Jason Kepner, Kevin Hourican, Ed Josefoski, Carlos Ortiz, José Quiñones, Zeljko Koljesar, Zach Slenker, Carlos Guerra, Ricky Mattei, Keith Kowal, Nate Meerstein, Matt Proper, Matt Anderson, Luke Murray, Max Holt, Max Lipsitz, Will Price, Dennis Del Valle, Joe Sunder and Edgardo Goas) to 41 All-America awards. At least three of his players have earned first team All-East/All-EIVA accolades each season.
As Pavlik explained, lending an ear goes a long way in coaching.
In the past 26 years, Pavlik has gained considerable experience coaching at the international, national, collegiate and high school levels. He was a member of the AVCA Board of Directors as well as chairman of the AVCA All-America committee. Pavlik was also named EIVA Coach of the Year from 1995-97 and served as the Head of Delegation for the defending Olympic Champion USA men's volleyball team at the America's Cup in Brazil in September, 2008.
"I think the best coaches are the most observant," Pavlik said. "They are good in convincing young people what it takes to succeed in life, not just on the court. "I do not think about coaching as being the boss. Rather, I am here to see how all the parts fit together. I am
During the summer of 1995, Pavlik was a member of the coaching staff of the World University Games team that competed in Japan and finished eighth out of 30 teams. Former Nittany Lion captains Ed Josefoski and Kevin Hourican were team members.
"I have the philosophy that the team is going to win or lose the match. I tend to be more demanding in practice where the work gets done. During the matches, I like to help the team use what they have been trained to use."

Pavlik coached the U.S. National Team at the NORCECA competition in Edmonton, Alberta, in the fall of 1995. The USA took home the silver, losing to Cuba in the final. 22 years ago, Pavlik was a member of the U.S. staff at the World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y. Pavlik again joined the World University Games staff in the summer of 2001 when he served as the U.S. Head of Delegation for the Games, which were held in Beijing, China. Pavlik and the U.S. team brought home the gold, the first-ever gold medal won by the men's World University Games team, and the first men's gold medal at any level since the 1988 Olympic Games gold. Current Lion assistant coach Colin McMillan was a player on that WUG team. A native of Derry, Pa., Pavlik served as an assistant to Derry High School coach Rich Schall from 1985-88. 2008 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
IRVINE, Calif., May 3, 2008 - Behind a career night from senior setter Luke Murray, the top-ranked Penn State men’s volleyball team captured its second National Championship title in school history with a four-game win over No. 2 Pepperdine (27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-23). Junior outside hitter Matt Anderson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Championship and joined Murray, junior middle hitter Max Holt and sophomore middle hitter Max Lipsitz along with Pepperdine’s Paul Carroll, J.D. Schleppenbach and Jonathan Winder on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team. Anderson became Penn State’s second NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, joining Ramon Hernandez, who earned the honor in 1994. In the final match of his career, Murray was nothing short of outstanding. The 6-foot setter recorded his first collegiate triple-double with a season-high 63 assists, a career-high 12 digs and a career-high 11 blocks while leading the Nittany Lions to a team hitting percentage of .407. For the NCAA Championship, Murray directed the Nittany Lions to a combined .409 hitting percentage and for the season, Penn State shattered the previous team hitting percentage record of .384 set by the 1994 National Champions, attacking at a .399 clip for the 2008 campaign. Anderson led the Nittany Lions with 29 kills on .451 hitting against Pepperdine while Lipsitz set a career high with 17 kills on .500 hitting. Holt added in 12 kills on .417 hitting while junior opposite Ryan Sweitzer contributed 10 kills. The unsung hero of the match, freshman libero Dennis Del Valle recorded a match-high and career-high-tying 16 digs and for the NCAA Championship, Del Valle racked up 30 total digs. Penn State is the only school outside of California to have its men’s and women’s programs both capture a national championship. The Nittany Lion women’s squad won the title in 1999 and then outlasted Stanford in five games at Arco Arena in Sacramento on Dec. 15, 2007. The Nittany Lions join Stanford, Long Beach State, UCLA and USC as the only programs to accomplish the feat. PENN STATE VS. PEPPERDINE I MAY 3, 2008 I IRVINE CALIF. A VISIT TO THE WHITE HOUSE As another perk to winning their respective NCAA National Championships, the 2008 Penn State men’s volleyball team and the 2007 Penn State women’s volleyball team and were invited to the White House to meet with President George W. Bush on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. Both squads enjoyed a tour of the East Wing of the White House before individually meeting with the President. He chatted with each group, asking about the season and their championship, where the student-athletes were from and what they planned to do in the future. The team captains then presented the President with a gift - a jointly-signed Penn State No. 1 volleyball jersey and a red, white and blue volleyball - before taking a group photo. The teams were then escorted to the Blue Room of the White House before being formally announced to the South Lawn, where they descended the stairs to a reserved seating area. The captains of each of the 18 National Championship teams in attendance were then escorted to a stage in front of the group and the President joined them, speaking to the crowd and recognizing each team for their feats.

1994 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
FORT WAYNE, Ind. May 7, 2008 - Penn State men’s volleyball accomplished what many thought would be impossible in 1994 when it became the first team from anywhere other than California to win a national title. Teams from the Golden State had claimed the previous 24 NCAA titles. Not only was Penn State the only program in men’s volleyball from the East to win a national title, no women’s team east of the Mississippi River had ever won a national title. After qualifying for nine NCAA Tournaments since 1981, Penn State had proven themselves as the top team in the East but defeating a California team to win the title still seemed like a dream. The dream became a reality on April 3, 1994 when the Nittany Lions outlasted perennial powerhouse and 14-time NCAA champion UCLA 9-15, 15-13, 4-15, 15-12, 15-12 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. A record-setting crowd of 7,908 witnessed Penn State come back from an 11-4 deficit in the fourth game to outscore the Bruins 11-1 down the stretch to force a fifth game and seize the momentum. Penn State then jumped out to a 8-4 lead in the final frame, saw UCLA rally to tie at 12-12, but didn’t wilt, scoring the final three points. Senior co-captain Byron Schneider posted the match winning kill and the Lions had made history. Ramon Hernandez recorded one of the most clutch performances in NCAA Tournament history in the championship match by recording 38 kills, a .444 hitting percentage and 10 digs. Ed Josefoski and Schneider each chipped in 18 kills, while Josefoski posted a team-high 12 digs. Both were named to the All-Tournament team. Just a freshman, Ivan Contreras added seven blocks and 14 kills while Kevin Hourican led the team with 11 blocks. Setter Carlos Ortiz recorded 87 assists, seven kills and 10 digs. The NCAA title capped off a 25-3 season that also saw the Lions take the EIVA crown. Penn State recorded victories over some of the top programs that season, defeating Stanford twice, Ball State, Brigham Young and Ohio State three times. The Lions had four players finish the season with over 300 kills, led by Hernandez with 440. Hernandez, Contreras, Josefoski and Ortiz were named All-Americans. PENN STATE VS. PE N N S TATE M E N’ S VO L LEY B ALL This publication about the 2017 Penn State Men’s Volleyball team has been prepared to aid members of the media covering the Nittany Lions this season. Additional information is available by contacting Jeff Smith at (814) 865-3613 or by email at jzs23@psu.edu A photo roster is available on page 5 of this publication. Credentials Members of the media should contact the Penn State Athletic Communications Office to request season or individual game credentials for Nittany Lion volleyball home matches. The press row at Rec Hall is located on the upper track level of the building on the south side. Individual game requests should be made no later than noon the day prior to the game and should be directed to Jeff Smith, Assistant Athletic Communications Director, at (814) 865-3613 or jzs23@psu.edu. Credentials will be available for pick-up at the Rec Hall Will Call window the evening of the contest. Members of the media are allowed to park in the Nittany Parking Deck adjacent to the Nittany Lion Inn. Interview Policies Please direct all requests for interviews with coaches or players to Jeff Smith. Members of the Penn State coaching staff are usually available during weekday mornings and afternoon practices and are available after matches. Members of the volleyball team will be available for interviews before and after scheduled practices, but will not be available for interviews on the day of a game, home or away, until the post-match press conference. After home matches, head coach Mark Pavlik and requested players will be available for interviews in Rec Hall, room 142. Contact Jeff Smith for individual post-match interviews and away match requests. Players will return telephone calls; home and cell phone numbers will not be released. For opposing players and coaches, please contact Jeff Smith who will alert the visiting SID, if available, or set up interviews if possible. Penn State adheres to the NCAA photography policies. Photographers are permitted on the volleyball court but must remain in the designated area. Photographers are also allowed in the stands as long as fan viewing is not obstructed, and anywhere along the upper track level of Rec Hall.
E-Mail and Web Updates While game notes and updated stats will be distributed to local media via email and the web on a regular basis, members of the media may request that they be added to the Penn State Athletic Communications Office’s men’s volleyball e-mail group. Subscribers will receive game notes, game stories and other information via e-mail. To subscribe, send a request to jzs23@psu.edu. Please identify yourself and organization in your request as this service is only available to members of the media. Telephones and Wireless Internet There will be at least one phone provided on press row for media to make calling card or collect phone calls. Free unrestricted wireless is also available anywhere in the Rec Hall arena. Please alert Jeff Smith if additional arrangements need to be made. Daily Media Services For the most up-to-date Nittany Lion volleyball news and statistics, visit the official website of the Penn State Athletic Department at www.GoPSUsports. com. Game notes and updated statistics for the upcoming match will be posted no later than the day before the contest. Gameday Media Services The Penn State Athletic Communications staff will provide pre-match notes, scorecards, rosters, updated statistics and results for each team in the Rec Hall Media Room (Room 301, adjacent to press row off of the track) prior to each match. Box scores and any postmatch notes will be distributed approximately 10 minutes after the conclusion of the match at the post-match press conference. An Associated Press-style game story will also be produced by the Penn State Athletic Communications Office. Members of the media may request these stories be sent to their organization via fax or e-mail by contacting a member of the Penn State Athletic Communications Staff. Penn State Athletic Communications Office The Penn State Athletic Communications Office is located in 101 of the Bryce Jordan Center. The entrance is located off University Drive using the Orange Lot West parking lot.
Bleachers North
Official’s Stand
Bleachers
* There are no Photo Zones on the South side of the court (benches/scorer’s table).
West
* Four Photo Zone seats are on the North bleachers. Seats are reserved for credentialed photographers on a first-come, first-served basis. You must be seated on the bleacher seat - or directly in front of the bleacher with your back touching. If sitting on the floor, your feet must be tucked underneath you and all bags/equipment must be kept out of play at all times. This is a playable area.
* Protocol may change slightly for NCAA Championship matches.
* You may shoot from the mid-level or track as long as you do not block the view of spectators.
Visiting Team Bench
East
Bleachers
* Two Photo Zones are on the East and West sides of the gym. During all regular-season games, photographers have the entire side of the opposite court where Penn State is playing. PSU cheerleaders are required to cheer behind the PSU team and they will switch sides when the team does. Actual Photo Zones are not marked on the floor but photographers are asked to remain behind the white line marked on the floor about 10 feet from the endline. Please keep this area clear of bags/equipment as it is a playable area. Servers have the entire baseline for use.
