The 2023 baseball season is Rob Cooper’s 10th as head coach of the Nittany Lion baseball program. Cooper was selected as the 14th head baseball coach in Penn State history on August 9, 2013. Not shy about stating his ultimate goal of returning Penn State to Omaha in June, the Lions have made significant strides under his leadership.

Under his tutelage, 12 players have been drafted and 13 total have signed with MLB teams in the last five seasons with a full draft. However, his strong belief in the first part of the term “student-athlete” is perhaps the top reason he has proven to be an excellent fit at Penn State. Even with state-of-the-art facilities, the chance to take on elite competition and a program history that includes five trips to the College World Series, Cooper cites the value of a Penn State degree as one of the top reasons to play baseball at Penn State.

In 2022, Cooper led the Nittany Lions to their first Big Ten Tournament appearance since 2012. Penn State finished the season with a 26-29 record, including an 11-13 mark in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions earned the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, picking up a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Iowa to open the tournament.

The Nittany Lions won Big Ten series against Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan State, sweeping the Spartans. Penn State also earned a win in each series against Rutgers, No. 23 Maryland, Northwestern and Ohio State.

In non-conference action, the Nittany Lions’ wins included an 8-4 win at West Virginia and a 19-6 win over Pitt in PNC Park, highlighted by a 14-run top of the ninth.

Penn State had two All-Big Ten selections, led by first team selection Matt Wood. The junior catcher won the Big Ten batting average title in the regular season (.395) and led the Nittany Lions in average (.379), hits (75), runs (55), homers (12), RBI (53), total bases (132), slugging percentage (.667), on-base percentage (.480) and walks (36). Wood’s incredible season included a 26-game hit streak and a 36-game reached-base streak. Wood was PSU’s first All-Big Ten first-team selection since Jordan Steranka in 2012) and Penn State’s 16th first team selection in program history and the third catcher to earn first team honors.

Wood finished the season ranking fourth at PSU in runs (55), sixth in total bases (132), tied seventh in walks (36), tied eighth in hits (75) and RBI (53) and ninth in homers (12) and slugging percentage (.667).

Wood was selected in the fourth round (132nd overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2022 MLB Draft. Wood is the highest-selected position player in program history. The previous highest was catcher Ben Heath (fifth round, 153rd overall) by the Houston Astros.

Josh Spiegel was named All-Big Ten second team, batting .300 with a team-best 17 doubles. He had 10 homers and 43 RBI to go with 34 runs. Anthony Steele was selected to the All-Big Ten freshman team.

In 24 Big Ten regular season games, Penn State collected 83 extra-base hits, including 43 doubles, 11 triples and 29 homers. Penn State set a program record with 19 triples in 2022, bettering the previous record of 18 in 1986, 2007 and 2010.

On the mound, the Nittany Lions’ pitching staff set a program record with 503 strikeouts. Penn State tallied 21 games with 10+ strikeouts and 16 games allowing three or less earned runs. Six pitchers recorded at least 40 strikeouts, led by Travis Luensmann (78), Jordan Morales (60), Tyler Shingledecker (60) and Jaden Henline (56). Shingledecker paced PSU with seven wins, while Morales led the staff with 26 appearances. In 49 of 55 games, Penn State’s starting pitcher was a Pennsylvania native.

In the classroom, Wood was a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.

The Nittany Lions finished the 2021 season with an 18-24 record, playing against exclusively Big Ten opponents. The wins included a 3-2 victory over No. 18 Michigan on March 26 and a series sweep over Michigan State in which Penn State out-scored the Spartans, 39-13. The Nittany Lions also won two

Spring 1994 & 1995: Cooper's first coaching job is as an assistant at the University of Miami, starting with the 1993 season. That Hurricanes team reached the NCAA Regionals before making back-to-back trips to the College World Series the next two seasons.

May 17, 1998: Following a regular-season Conference USA Championship in his first year on staff the previous season, Cooper helps guide Tulane to a Conference USA Tournament Championship and NCAA Regional berth.

May 28, 2006: Cooper’s Raiders defeat Butler in the Horizon League Championship game to earn a trip to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1994.

April 15, 2008: Cooper wins his 100th career game in a 5-1 victory over Xavier.

May 24, 2009: Wright State defeats UIC in the Horizon League Tournament Championship game 6-2 to punch an NCAA Regional ticket to Fort Worth, Texas.

May 25, 2010: Cooper is selected as the Horizon League Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders to their first regular-season championship since 1997.

March 26, 2011: Cooper records career win number 200 with an 8-2 victory over Youngstown State.

Spring 2011: The Raiders win their second-straight Horizon League regular-season title with a 16-7 record, claim the league tournament crown by winning three-straight games and advance to the NCAA Regionals in College Station, Texas.

August 9, 2013: Cooper accepts Penn State’s offer to become the 14th head coach in program history.

September 8, 2013: The 18U U.S. National Team, led by Cooper, wins the 2013 IBAF ‘AAA’/18U World Cup in Taichung, Taiwan with a 3-2 victory over Japan in the championship game.

October 29, 2013: Cooper is honored by USA Baseball as the Rod Dedeaux USA Baseball Coach of the Year.

November 21-29, 2015: Penn State tours Cuba and posts a 1-3 record against teams from Cuba’s top league, the National Series, becoming the first U.S. team to play multiple teams from the league and the first to earn a victory.

May 20, 2016: Cooper clinches his 350th career head coaching win when Penn State earns a 12-inning, walk-off win over Iowa in the season finale to clinch its first winning season since 2012.

series against Rutgers. Penn State scored 10 or more runs in six games, Penn State’s most against Big Ten opponents since 2008 (8) and the most in a season since 2016.

Penn State led the Big Ten in doubles (93) and doubles per game (2.21), ranking 10th in the country in doubles per game. The Nittany Lions sat third in the conference in batting average (.269). Penn State hit 34 home runs, its most since 2012, and had five players with four or more homers.

Sophomore Matt Wood collected Second Team All-Big Ten honors, batting .295 with four homers and 21 RBI. Senior Gavin Homer led the Nittany Lions with a .310 batting average, a .429 on-base percentage and tied with Johnny Piacentino for the team-lead in runs (30). Junior Justin Williams hit .302 and paced Penn State with 48 hits. Piacentino led the squad with eight homers and 32 RBI to go with a team-best .525 slugging percentage.

Senior Kyle Virbitsky paced the Penn State rotation with a 4.17 ERA, five wins, 77.2 innings pitched and 88 strikeouts. Virbitsky ranked seventh in the Big Ten in strikeouts and third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.40). His 88 strikeouts are tied for the 10th-most in a season at Penn State.

The Nittany Lions continued their success in the classroom with a program-record 19 players earning Academic All-Big Ten accolades.

Penn State had four players drafted from the 2021 squad. Larkin was selected in the ninth round (272nd overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Williams was a 17th round selection (508th overall) by the Houston Astros and Kyle Virbitsky followed, being selected 518th overall by the Oakland A's. Bailey Dees was drafted in the 18th round (543rd overall) by the New York Yankees. All three members of the starting rotation were drafted, making Penn State one of only four schools to accomplish that in 2021.

It marked the third time in program history that Penn State had four or more players selected in a single year and the second time that Penn State had three pitchers selected in a draft. The Nittany Lions have had eight pitchers drafted since 2016. The four selections were double of any other Pennsylvania school and three of the draftees are Pennsylvania natives.

Penn State was off to a 10-5 start in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season. Penn State was among the conference leaders offensively, ranking second in on-base percentage (.394), slugging (.422), triples (7), doubles (30), third in batting average (.289) and walks (77), and fourth in scoring (6.7 runs/game) and runs (100). On the mound, Penn State ranked sixth in the NCAA with a 1.01 WHIP and also eighth with a 2.16 team ERA. The Nittany Lions also ranked 15th with 6.33 hits allowed per nine innings and 18th with a 3.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The 2019 season concluded with Penn State’s draft class, headlined by Dante Biasi’s selection in the sixth round by the Kansas City Royals. Biasi became the highest-selected left-handed pitcher in Penn State history, the highest-selected Nittany Lion pitcher overall since 2008 and the highestselected Nittany Lion overall since 2010. Eric Mock was also drafted, becoming the fifth Penn State pitcher in four years to get drafted, while Ryan Sloniger became the 14th player to get drafted in Cooper’s head coaching career including his time at the helm of Wright State.

Biasi was the leader of Penn State's starting rotation in 2019, earning a place on the 2019 All-Big Ten Second Team. He posted a 2.55 earned run average with 102 strikeouts in 74.0 innings over 14 starts.

Behind Biasi, Penn State improved its win total by seven from the prior season, including a win over No. 21 Duke. The Nittany Lions also excelled in the classroom with 15 earning Academic All-Big Ten honors.

In 2018, Justin Hagenman joined Sal Biasi, Jim Haley and Jack Anderson as recent Nittany Lion draft selections, while fellow pitcher and Cooper's first Penn State recruit signee, Taylor Lehman, signed as a free agent with the Phillies. Before Anderson's selection in 2016, just one Penn State pitcher had been taken in the previous six years. A member of Cooper’s first full recruiting class, Sal Biasi led Penn State during the 2017 season, earning All-Big Ten second team honors following a career year with 88 strikeouts.

Penn State baseball’s trip to Cuba prior to the 2016 season is perhaps the best example of Cooper’s commitment to the first part of the “studentathlete” term. The Nittany Lions attended academic lectures and toured Havana, becoming the first NCAA Division I team to compete against a Cuban National Series team, the first U.S. team at any level to defeat a Cuban National Series team, the first U.S. baseball team to play in Cuba since restoration of diplomatic ties with Cuba, the second NCAA team to play in Cuba since restoration of diplomatic ties (Coastal Carolina men's basketball, August 2015) and the fifth NCAA Division I baseball team to compete in post-revolutionary Cuba.

The rare, once-in-a-lifetime experience helped bring a young Penn State team together, and the Lions went on to earn their first winning record (overall and in conference) since 2012. The starting lineup included at least three freshmen in all but six games and five to six freshmen in 19 games, and took on nine eventual NCAA tournament teams, including a three-game series at home against College World Series participant TCU. The Lions’ 28 wins were a 10-win improvement over the previous season, and its 12 Big Ten wins doubled the 2015 total. Haley and Anderson were the first drafted out of Penn State since 2012, and Anderson and senior outfielder Greg Guers became the program’s first All-Big Ten picks also since 2012. Pitcher Justin Hagenman became Penn State’s first Louisville Slugger Freshman All-

American since 1997.

The Lions started making gains during Cooper’s second season in Happy Valley in 2015. Penn State played 10 games against top-25 opponents and rallied from a 7-0 deficit against No. 21 Indiana for their first win over a ranked opponent in three seasons.

Shortly after Cooper accepted the PSU head coaching position in 2014, the California native traveled to Taichung, Taiwan to serve as the head coach of USA Baseball's 18U National Team at the IBAF U18 World Cup. Cooper steered Team USA to an 8-1 record in World Cup play, including seven consecutive victories to win the gold medal.

Not long after the triumph in Taiwan, Cooper received one of the highest honors bestowed in the profession, as he was announced as the Rod Dedeaux USA Baseball Coach of the Year. With the honor, Cooper became just the 16th individual in the award's history to receive the accolade, joining the likes of Scott Brosius, Davey Johnson and Tommy Lasorda.

Cooper was also a member of the coaching staff for the 2007 and 2009 USA College National teams. The 2007 team earned a silver medal at the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fourteen of the 20 players on the 2007 team reached the Major Leagues, including 2013 All-Star Pedro Alvarez. Fourteen of the 22 members of the 2009 team also reached the Major Leagues, including three-time All-Star Gerrit Cole.

Cooper brought an accomplished resume to Penn State that included three NCAA Tournament appearances as a head coach at Wright State and five more at various stops as an assistant coach, including two trips to the College World Series with Miami (Florida). Cooper was twice named the Horizon League Coach of the Year and guided Wright State to three league tournament championships and two regular-season championships.

Cooper methodically built Wright State into a perennial contender in the Horizon League with seven 30-win seasons, two Horizon League regularseason titles, three Horizon League Tournament crowns and six Horizon League Championship game appearances. In nine seasons starting in 2005, Cooper accumulated a 286-230 record, including a pair of wins over No. 1-ranked opponents Virginia (3/5/10) and Georgia (3/24/09). He was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011.

Cooper saw 47 players earn all-conference accolades and 18 garner allnewcomer honors. He also produced five Horizon League Players of the Year, one Pitcher of the Year, three Relief Pitchers of the Year and two Newcomers of the Year.

During a successful nine-year stint as the head coach at Wright State, seven of his players were drafted, including eventual Major Leaguer Joe Smith, and 12 more signed professional free agent contracts.

The 2011 season saw Cooper record his 200th coaching victory and earn the Horizon League Coach of the Year award for the second consecutive year. The Raiders won their second-straight Horizon League regular season title with a 16-7 record, claimed the league tournament crown by winning three-straight games and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in College Station, Texas. In 2010, the Raiders won the Horizon League regular-season title with a mark of 17-6, the first regular-season conference crown for the program since the 1997 squad won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference title. The 2009 Wright State Raiders compiled a 33-30 overall record and returned to the NCAA Tournament following a Horizon League tournament championship.

The 2006 edition of the Raiders set six school records and posted the most season wins in five years. Cooper's squad defeated nationally-ranked TCU on the road, topped national-powerhouse Notre Dame in South Bend and was on the brink of an upset against eventual National Champion Oregon State in the NCAA Corvallis Regional.

Before arriving at Wright State, Cooper served as the hitting coach, recruiting coordinator and bench coach at Oral Roberts University. A perennial power of the Mid-Continent Conference (now Summit League), ORU advanced to the finals of the NCAA Austin Regional in 2004, beating TCU twice before falling to Texas, 7-3 and 7-5. The Golden Eagles finished with an overall mark of 50-11 in 2004 and had five players selected in the Major League Baseball draft.

Cooper began his coaching career at national power Miami, spending two seasons (1994-95) as a student/graduate assistant on the Hurricanes' staff. While at Miami, Cooper helped the Hurricanes to College World Series berths in 1994 and 1995. Cooper spent the 1996 season as an assistant and team academic coordinator at Wake Forest, then moved on to Tulane for the next two seasons, serving as the Green Wave's hitting coach. In 1997, the Green Wave won the Conference USA regular-season crown, and in 1998, they advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Cooper left Tulane following the 1998 season and returned to Sacramento City College, where he starred in the early 1990's before lettering at Miami in 1993.

Along with his college coaching experience, Cooper also was an associate scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1990-92 and has been selected to four coaching stints with USA Baseball in 2000, 2007, 2009 and 2013.

Cooper earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Miami in 1994 and a master's in sports sciences/administration from Miami in 1996. He is married to his wife, Maureen, and has two sons, Jake and Tyson.

Assistant Coach

Penn State has Major League experience to work with its pitchers, as 2023 marks Josh Newman’s sixth season on the Nittany Lions coaching staff.

Newman spent five seasons in professional baseball before moving into coaching, and is now guiding the Nittany Lions to success on the mound and to the next level with seven pitchers joining MLB organizations in the last four seasons.

In 2022, the Nittany Lions made their first Big Ten Tournament appearances since 2012. Penn State concluded the season with a 26-29 record, including an 11-13 mark in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions earned the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and won its tournament opener, 5-2, over No. 3 seed Iowa.

During the regular season, Penn State won Big Ten series against Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan State, sweeping the Spartans. Penn State also earned a win in each series against Rutgers, No. 23 Maryland, Northwestern and Ohio State.

On the mound, Penn State set a program record with 503 strikeouts in 490 innings. The Nittany Lions recorded 21 games with 10+ strikeouts and 16 games allowing three or less earned runs. In 49 of 55 games, Penn State’s starting pitcher was a Pennsylvania native.

Six pitchers recorded at least 40 strikeouts, led by Travis Luensmann (78), Jordan Morales (60), Tyler Shingledecker (60) and Jaden Henline (56). Shingledecker paced PSU with seven wins, while Morales led the staff with 26 appearances.

Luensmann finished the season with 78 strikeouts in 67.2 innings. In Big Ten games, Luensmann had a 3.25 ERA, sitting fifth in the conference. Against Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament, Luensmann struck out seven in 3.1 shutout innings of relief.

Henline struck out 56 batters in 59 innings. Against Michigan State (5/8), earned the win by throwing a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out six.

Shingledecker made 21 appearances, collecting a team-high seven wins, with a 3.10 ERA. He held opponents without an earned run in 12 of his 21 outings. The lefty recorded 60 strikeouts and only 18 walks.

Morales, after transferring from LaSalle, paced PSU with 26 appearances and tallied a 3-0 record with a 3.64 ERA. He collected 60 strikeouts and allowed only 12 walks. Did not give up an earned run in 15 of 26 appearances and one or less earned run in 22 appearances.

Graduate student Mason Mellott made 22 appearances. Mellott ended his Penn State career tied for third in program history with 15 saves and ranking second with 89 appearances.

Penn State starting pitchers allowed 2 or less runs in 16 outings. The Nittany Lions staff recorded two shutouts this season, including a 1-0 win over Rutgers on April 2 and an 11-0 victory over Purdue on April 10. Penn State collected 367 strikeouts in 2021.

Senior Kyle Virbitsky paced the Penn State rotation with a 4.17 ERA, five wins, 77.2 innings pitched and 88 strikeouts. Virbitsky ranked seventh in the Big Ten in strikeouts and third in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.40). His 88 strikeouts are tied for the 10th-most in a season at Penn State.

Senior Bailey Dees served as PSU’s Friday night starter and was responsible for four wins and 53 strikeouts in 66 innings. One of his top performances in the 2021 season came against Michigan, where he struck out seven and allowed just two runs over 6.2 innings to lead the blue and white to a 3-2 victory over the No. 18 Wolverines.

Fellow senior Conor Larkin earned three wins and 69 strikeouts in 63.2

When the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the 2020 season, Penn State ranked sixth in the NCAA with a 1.01 WHIP and also eighth with a 2.16 team ERA. The Nittany Lions also ranked 15th with 6.33 hits allowed per nine innings and 18th with a 3.63 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Additionally, Dees, Shingledecker and Mellott held Navy hitless for 10.1 innings for the first combined no-hitter and first extra-inning no-hitter in program history. The no-hitter was the 10th in Penn State history and first since 2012.

Penn State pitchers saw big improvement in 2019, smashing the program record for strikeouts with 491 and ranking ninth in the country and tops in the Big Ten with 10.1 strikeouts-per-nine innings.

Dante Biasi led Penn State’s starting rotation and was voted to the 2019 All-Big Ten Second Team by the conference's coaches before getting selected by the Kansas City Royals early in the sixth round to become the highest-selected left-handed pitcher in Penn State history.

Biasi posted a 2.55 earned run average with 102 strikeouts in 74.0 innings over 14 starts. Eric Mock was also drafted in 2019 following a career year under Newman’s tutelage, going to the Cleveland Indians in the 23rd round. At the conclusion of the regular season, Mock ranked seventh in the Big Ten with 10.45 strikeouts per nine innings and 10th with 7.46 hits allowed per nine innings.

Penn State also added to its pro ranks following Newman’s first season at Penn State in 2018, as Justin Hagenman was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Taylor Lehman signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Newman came to Penn State after a four-year stint at Marshall. Notable accomplishments included mentoring Chase Boster, the all-time winningest pitcher in Marshall history, and seeing three pitchers from his staff have their names called in the 2016 MLB Draft. In 2017, the pitching staff held opponents to three runs or less in 21 games, including a complete-game shutout at nationally-ranked Florida Atlantic.

D1Baseball.com named Newman as a "top, up-and-coming" Division I assistant coach in 2015, as one pitcher was named to the All-Conference USA team and three players signed professional contracts. His inaugural season with the Herd in 2014 resulted in the school's first Conference USA Pitcher of the Week Award since 2008 and one player earning Conference USA All-Freshman honors.

Newman is no stranger to the Big Ten after totaling seven years in the dugout at Ohio State, as he lettered for four years as a student-athlete (200104) and served as a volunteer assistant coach for three seasons (2011-13) following his professional playing career. Three pitchers were drafted during his tenure as John Kuchno was a 2012 18th-round selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in 2013, Brad Goldberg was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 10th round and Brett McKinney was taken in the 19th by the Pirates.

A native of Wheelersburg, Ohio and a 2004 Ohio State graduate with a Bachelors of Arts degree in history, Newman ranks third all-time at Ohio State in career wins (32), innings pitched (369.0) and strikeouts (291). He was a freshman All-American in 2001 a three-time All-Big Ten honoreeincluding a first-team selection in 2004 - and a three-time Academic AllBig Ten selection. In his career, Newman helped the Buckeyes to a 161-841 record, a Big Ten regular-season championship (2001) and two Big Ten Tournament championships (2002 and 2003). Ohio State went to three NCAA Regionals and hosted an NCAA Super Regional (2003) during his four years in Columbus.

Newman was drafted in the 19th round of the 2004 MLB Draft and signed a professional contract with the Colorado Rockies. He had previously been drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2003, but he elected to stay at Ohio State for his senior season.

The Wheelersburg High School graduate spent three seasons in the minors before making his Major League debut against Philadelphia on Sept. 12, 2007, and making the Colorado Rockies World Series roster that season. He jumped between Triple-A Colorado Springs and the Rockies in 2008 before being claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals in July. Newman pitched in 14 games over his two seasons between Colorado and Kansas City, making his last appearance in September 2008.

He and his wife Sarah have three children, daughter, Ayda, and sons, Kash and Miler.

Sean Moore is in his fifth season on the Penn State baseball staff and second as an assistant coach.  His responsibilities include heavy involvement with the hitters and recruiting and oversight of the infielders.

In 2022, the Nittany Lions earned their first Big Ten Tournament appearance since 2012. The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 26-29 record, including an 11-13 mark in the Big Ten. Penn State earned the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, picking up a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Iowa to open the tournament.

The Nittany Lions won Big Ten series against Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan State, sweeping the Spartans. Penn State also earned a win in each series against Rutgers, No. 23 Maryland, Northwestern and Ohio State. In non-conference action, the Nittany Lions’ wins included a 14-3 victory over NEC Champion LIU, an 8-4 win at West Virginia and a 19-6 win over Pitt in PNC Park, highlighted by a 14-run top of the ninth.

Penn State had two All-Big Ten selections, led by first team selection Matt Wood. The junior catcher won the Big Ten batting average title in the regular season (.395) and led the Nittany Lions in average (.379), hits (75), runs (55), homers (12), RBI (53), total bases (132), slugging percentage (.667), on-base percentage (.480) and walks (36). Wood was selected in the fourth round (132nd overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2022 MLB Draft. Wood is the highest-selected position player in program history. The previous highest was catcher Ben Heath (fifth round, 153rd overall) by the Houston Astros.

Josh Spiegel was named All-Big Ten second team, batting .300 with a team-best 17 doubles. He had 10 homers and 43 RBI to go with 34 runs. Spiegel tied for the eighth-most doubles in a season at PSU, matching Chris Wright (2001). Anthony Steele was selected to the All-Big Ten freshman team.

In 24 Big Ten regular season games, Penn State collected 83 extrabase hits, including 43 doubles, 11 triples and 29 homers. Penn State set a program record with 19 triples in 2022. Tayven Kelley and Johnny Piacentino each had four triples, good to tie for eighth-most in a season at PSU.

Jay Harry batted .333 with 71 hits, including 10 doubles and five homers, 40 runs and 26 RBI. Billy Gerlott tallied 12 doubles, two triples and six homers to go with 33 RBI.

The Nittany Lions ended the 2021 season with an 18-24 record, playing against exclusively Big Ten opponents. The victories included a 3-2 win over No. 18 Michigan on March 26 and a series sweep over Michigan State in which Penn State outscored the Spartans, 39-13. Penn State scored 10 or more runs in six games.

Penn State led the Big Ten in doubles (93) and doubles per game (2.21), ranking 10th in the country in doubles per game. The Nittany Lions sat third in the conference in batting average (.269).

Moore joined the Nittany Lions ahead of the 2019 season in a newlycreated operations/player development position, where he oversaw the implementation of multiple analytical and video technology systems, worked with the coaching staff to further develop practice plans and ingame coaching strategies and handled team logistics.

Prior to joining Penn State, Moore served two years as the volunteer assistant coach at Iowa as the teams' hitting coach.

Moore's collegiate playing career consisted of three stops. He played two seasons at DMACC. He spent the 2013 season at Wichita State before transferring and wrapping up his career as a Hawkeye in 2015.

Junior Justin Williams hit .302 and paced Penn State with 48 hits. Piacentino led the squad with eight homers and 32 RBI.

In his first season with the Nittany Lions in 2019, Burke worked with Ryan Sloniger, who became the seventh catcher drafted in Penn State history.

Burke has a Big Ten connection as he played at Iowa for two years before completing his career at Missouri Southern State University. He was also a volunteer assistant at Division I schools prior to arriving at Penn State with stops at Bowling Green (2016-17) and West Virginia (2017-18).

A catcher during his playing days, Burke continued his career after college at the professional level. He played one season with the Roswell Invaders of the Pecos League (Independent Professional Baseball) in New Mexico in 2013, before spending parts of 2014 with the Cologne Cardinals in Germany as a player and coach.

Burke began his collegiate playing career at the University of Iowa from 2008-10, where he was named a Freshman All-Big Ten selection as a catcher in 2009. He finished his collegiate career at Missouri Southern State University. In three seasons at Missouri Southern, Burke was named an AllMIAA selection twice and is ranked No. 10 in school history for career batting average and No. 12 in career fielding percentage. In 2013, he helped Missouri Southern win its first conference title in 21 years.

JAKE STONE

FOURTH YEAR IOWA, 2019

Dir. of Operations/Player Development

Jake Stone was named Penn State baseball's Director of Operations and Player Development in the summer of 2019 and enters his fourth season on the Nittany Lion staff in 2023.

Stone brings professional and Big Ten experience to the position, working for the Baltimore Orioles organization this summer and previously serving as the head student manager at Iowa. In his roles, Stone demonstrated advanced knowledge of the cutting-edge player development technology that has proliferated through baseball and efficiently implemented the new systems to improve player practice plans.

For the Orioles, Stone served as a minor league video and data assistant. He created and maintained opposing team scouting reports to assist the coaching staff of their short-season A affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds. Stone also operated the BATS! and Trackman systems and assisted with operating the Edgertronic and Rapsodo systems, cutting film for video analysis and creating player profiles utilizing Trackman data.

Stone led a team of 14 fellow students as an undergraduate at Iowa, assisting with day-to-day operations such as practice setup, scouting, travel and camps. He worked with now-Penn State assistant coach Sean Moore during the 2017 and 2018 seasons when Moore was serving as the Hawkeyes' volunteer assistant coach. During those two seasons Iowa, tallied a pair of 30-win seasons, won the 2017 Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, and represented the United States at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan, winning a silver medal. Moore joined Penn State in the summer of 2018 as the Director of Operations and Player Development and moved into an assistant coaching role in July.

In the summer of 2018, Stone served as a collegiate area scout in the Northwoods League for Prep Baseball Report and operated the Trackman system for the single-A Cedar Rapids Kernels, a Minnesota Twins affiliate.

Stone graduated from the University of Iowa in May 2018 with a degree in sport and recreation management.

JARED JARVI

SECOND YEAR NORTHERN MICHIGAN Performance Enhancement

Jared Jarvi is in his second season as the Performance Enhancement coach for the Penn State baseball program. He is responsible for the design and implementation of training.

Prior to joining the Penn State staff, Jarvi served as an Olympic Strength & Conditioning Fellow (2020) at the University of Michigan where he assisted in the development of all athletes within Michigan Olympic Sports, including Baseball. Prior to working at Michigan, he served as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Northern Michigan University (2017).

Jarvi graduated from Northern Michigan University with a major in Sport & Exercise Science. He also earned his master’s degree from the University of Michigan in Movement Science.

The Chassell, Michigan native resides in State College with his wife, Emily.

Hall is in her second season as the athletic trainer for the Penn State baseball program.

Hall earned her bachelor of science degree from Michigan State, graduating in 2018. She graduated from North Carolina with her master's degree in 2020.

1952

The Performance: The Lions posted a 17-6 record en route to their first College World Series appearance in school history.

The Story: Anchored by freshman Keith Vesling (7-3, 2.40 ERA, 82.1 IP), Penn State’s three-man rotation dominated opposing hitters. Bill Everson and Jack Krumrine each posted 5-1 marks to round out a rotation that combined for all 17 of the Lions’ wins.

The Result: After a fine season and back-to-back wins in the District II Regionals, the Nittany Lions bowed out of their first CWS appearance. They fell to eventual champion, Holy Cross, and took home a tie for third.

1956

The Performance: The “Technology Bandwagon” made its way through Happy Valley as coach Joe Bedenk invested in an early model of today’s pitching machine. The machine, an awkward and inefficient contraption, was able to hurl one ball every eight seconds.

The Story: After having his spring batting practices delayed weeks at a time due to weather conditions, Bedenk was finally able to take his men indoors to get their swings. In addition to buying his batters over two weeks of extra batting practice, the machine also kept his pitchers’ arms fresh as they threw batting practice in previous years.

The Result: It didn’t take long to see a return on the technological investment. The 1957 squad made a run to the College World Series Final.

1957

The Performance: After reeling off a school-record 21 consecutive wins to start the year, the 1957 Nittany Lions became arguably the best team in school history and in doing so, became the benchmark for success in Happy Valley. Finishing with a 22-2 record and a school-best second-place finish in the College World Series.

The Story: Legendary hurler Ed Drapcho (12-0, 1.52 ERA; single-season school record wins) and two-sport star Cal Emery (10-1, captain of basketball team) posted all 22 of the Lions’ wins. The tandem also tallied an astounding 15 complete games and gave up a combined 29 earned runs.

Drapcho became the school’s first-ever first-team All-American and Emery, despite the Penn State loss to California in the CWS Final, became the only NCAA Tournament MVP in school history.

The Result: After a 17-0 regular season and four consecutive postseason victories, the squad ran into a juggernaut in the University of California. Penn State fell in both the second round and final to take runner-up honors while making its mark in the record books.

1959

The Performance: Reminiscent to the 1952 season in which Penn State made its first College World Series, the 1959 squad posted an identical 17-6 record while making the school’s third CWS appearance.

The Story: As per the theme of the 1950s, dominant pitching led the Lions into the postseason. The staff as a whole posted a skimpy 2.66 ERA for a Nittany Lion squad that outscored its opponents by a 172-89 margin.

The Result: Penn State defeated Connecticut, 5-3, in the first round before falling into the losers’ bracket after an 8-6 loss to eventual College World Series champion Oklahoma State. The persistent Lions fought back through the losers’ bracket by shutting out Clemson 7-0, only to fall to the same Oklahoma State squad, 4-3, when the Cowboys rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. It marked the third time in the decade in which Penn State lost to the eventual College World Series Champion. The Nittany Lions finished fourth.

1963

The Performance: In Chuck Medlar’s first season at the Penn State coaching helm, his Lions posted a 14-6 record in making their first and last College World Series appearance of the decade.

The Story: In addition to posting a 10-2 mark (10 wins, tied for third on school’s single-season wins list) and a miniscule 1.94 ERA, Bob Fenton also tallied no-hit games in wins over Cornell (17-0) and Rider (3-0, District II Regionals). He became just the third of eight Nittany Lions to toss no-hitters and the first to accomplish the feat twice.

The Result: Medlar debuted in fine fashion, leading his squad to the College World Series after a three-year absence. The Lions, after finishing the regular season 11-4, won three of their five postseason matchups to close the season with a 14-6 record and a fifth-place CWS finish.

1973

The Performance: Penn State, again led by a dominant pitching staff, posted a 19-7 record and made the last of its five College World Series appearances.

The Story: Mitch Lukevics, a freshman, turned in one of the most dominating pitching performances in school history to lead a rock-solid Nittany Lion squad. Lukevics, from nearby Bellefonte, posted a 7-2 record with a 1.23 ERA in the first of his three seasons at Penn State. To go along with his impressive stats, he finished the season with 86 strikeouts in just 65.2 innings of work, a ratio of 11.7 K per nine innings (seventh in the nation).

The Result: Despite going 0-2 in the College World Series, the Lions finished the postseason with a 3-2 mark and an overall record of 19-7.

1976

The Performance: The Lions posted an 18-8 record on their way to the school’s last NCAA Tournament appearance until 2000.

The Story: The most notable of the squad’s 18 wins came on April 19 in a 9-3 handling of George Washington. The win marked the team’s eighth of the season and 1,000th in school history.

The Result: After posting an 18-6 regular season record, the Lions dropped their first two postseason games and bowed out of the Regionals. Greg Vogel was rewarded for an outstanding season by nabbing first team AllAmerica status. He became just the third of four Nittany Lions to receive the honor. Vogel was rewarded again after the season by becoming the first Penn Stater to be selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

1978

The Performance: David Simononis turned in arguably the best offensive season in Penn State history.

The Storyline: Simononis hit a school-record 17 home runs, all with significant meaning. Penn State went 11-2 in games when Simononis homered and just 6-4-2 when he didn’t.

Simononis also tallied the best single-season slugging percentage (total bases/at-bats) in school history with a 1.100 mark, hit .478 (also best) and recorded a 13-game hit streak.

The Result: Simononis not only led the Lions to a solid 17-6-2 record, but he also propelled himself into the Penn State record books with his dominant offensive performance.

1990

The Performance: O.J McDuffie, PSU Football and NFL standout, played his first and last season for the Nittany Lion baseball squad.

The Storyline: McDuffie stole 20 bases (t-3rd, single-season school history) on 21 attempts (96 percent clip), hit .336 and had a .969 fielding percentage.

The Result: As a reward for his stellar football play, McDuffie was taken in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins (1993).

1996

The Performance: With a 19-8 Big Ten season (32-24-1 overall), the Nittany Lions won the school’s only Big Ten Championship.

The Story: Baby-faced sophomore Nate Bump led a list of 10 All-Big Ten honorees, including first-teamers Bump and Carl Albrecht. Bump was also named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and Pitcher of the Week three times. The sophomore posted an 8-5 mark, including three shutouts and seven complete games, to go along with his 3.60 ERA and 93 strikeouts.

The Result: The result was a Big Ten Championship and a Big Ten Coach of the Year honor for sixth-year head coach Joe Hindelang.

1996

2000

The Performance: After a 24-year NCAA absence, the 2000 Lions posted a 45-19 record and advanced to the postseason for the first time since 1976.

The Storyline: Led by the banner year of first-team All-American Michael Campo, Penn State tallied a 41-16 regular season record. Campo established single-season school records in at-bats (261), hits (111), doubles (24) and runs (83) on his way to Big Ten Player of the Year and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.

In postseason action, freshman Kevin Damiano stepped into the limelight. In the Upper Montclair Regional, Damiano’s nine innings with just six hits allowed against North Carolina earned Penn State the Regional Title and himself the Most Outstanding Player Award. The Lions cruised through the regional with a 4-1 record, including two victories over the Tar Heels.

The Result: Despite dropping back-to-back games to Texas in Super Regional action, the 2000 Lions finished a school-record 45 wins. The program also saw five players - Shawn Fagan, Matt Harter, Eric Spadt, Chris Netwall and Scott Russo - drafted by Major League clubs.

2007

The Performance: Penn State set a school record for most Big Ten wins and tied its second-best finish in the Big Ten. Numerous individuals also broke school records.

The Storyline: After starting out the season 2-12 against one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Nittany Lions finished the year with a 29-14 record to finish 31-26, just the fifth time with at least 30 wins in school history. Penn State also tied for second in the Big Ten behind a 20-10 conference record. That mark is tied with the 2000 team for the second-best Big Ten finish in school history while surpassing the 19 Big Ten games won by the 1996 squad for the most in school history. The team also won three Big Ten Tournament games (tied for most in school history) while its five Big Ten series wins were tied for the second most.

Individually, Drew O’Neil set the school record for most saves in a season with 11 (since broken in 2016). Matt Ogrodnik broke his own record by appearing in 29 games while Scott Gaffney’s 17 sacrifices were a record as well. In addition, Cory Wine broke his own mark for putouts with 521.

The Result: Despite its hot streak at the end of the year that featured wins in five of its last six Big Ten series and three straight in the conference tournament, Penn State fell just short of an NCAA Tournament berth. However, the Nittany Lions ended their first season at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park with some records, many memories and with upward momentum for the program.

2011

The Performance: The 2011 season was highlighted by record-setting performances, impressive non-conference victories and a berth in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Storyline: Coming off a season in which they won just three road games, the Lions won 16 road contests. Penn State’s 13-win jump from last year was also the highest by any team in the nation. Sean Deegan was one of only two players in the conference to earn unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honors. He led the league with a .622 slugging percentage, which was 25 points higher than the next closest competitor.

The Result: Seeded sixth after wrapping up the year with a 12-12 record in Big Ten action, Penn State faced a difficult road in the postseason and eventually bowed out following setbacks to Purdue and Minnesota in the conference tournament. Despite the exit, the Lions proved they could play with anyone in the conference, emphasized by their seven victories against fellow postseason contenders.

INDIVIDUAL GAME RECORDS

2012

The Performance: The Nittany Lions returned to the Big Ten Tournament, finishing third in the conference with a record of 15-9. It was Penn State’s highest finish in the Big Ten since also finishing third in 2008.

The Storyline: Penn State overcame a 3-14 start to the season, by finishing 26-13 to end the year 29-27. The Nittany Lions also went 18-4 at home and only dropped one series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Right-hander Steven Hill threw the first Penn State no-hitter since 1995. The junior needed only 105 pitches to complete the no-hitter at Iowa and only allowed a walk and a hit batter to reach. Hill reached the 100 innings mark for the second-straight season and finished with a 5-4 record and 3.38 ERA.

Three Nittany Lions earned All-Big Ten Honors. Jordan Steranka earned the nod at first base on the first team after hitting for a .363 average with 20 doubles, 11 homers, and 40 RBI. Steranka batted over .300 for the third time in his four seasons at Penn State. Left-hander Joe Kurrasch earned second team honors as a starting pitcher after going 4-2 and finishing with an outstanding 2.05 ERA. Sean Deegan smacked a Big Ten-leading 12 homers and was named third-team All-Big Ten.

The Result: The third-seeded Nittany Lions had a disappointing end to the season, falling to Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and then to Nebraska in the elimination game.

2016

The Performance: The Nittany Lions traveled to Cuba over Thanksgiving Break prior to the 2016 season for a historic trip that included educational experiences and four games against Cuba's premier National Series teams. During the regular season, Penn State earned its first winning record since 2012.

The Storyline: Penn State saw more action than usual in the fall as it prepared for its week-long trip to Cuba. Penn State became the first NCAA Division I team to compete against a Cuban National Series team, the first U.S. baseball team to play in Cuba since restoration of diplomatic ties with Cuba, the second NCAA team to play in Cuba since restoration of diplomatic ties (Coastal Carolina men's basketball, August 2015), the fifth NCAA Division I baseball team to compete in post-revolutionary Cuba and the first United States team to play multiple Cuban National Series teams. The first two games in Havana's Latin American Stadium were broadcast live throughout the nation. In the third game at Mayabeque, Nick Riotto drove in three runs with a triple and Christian Helsel homered to lead Penn State to a 9-3 victory. It was the first victory for a United States team at any level over a Cuban National Series team.

The 2016 season started with ups and downs on the road, but the Nittany Lions found their stride once they returned home, tallying a Medlar Field at Lubrano Park record 10-game winning streak after falling in the season opener. Greg Guers and Jack Anderson became the first Lions to earn All-Big Ten honors since 2012, and Anderson was also named to the ABCA All-Region Mideast team. Anderson set a single-season saves record with 13.

The Result: Penn State used a walk-off win in the 12th inning of the season finale to secure a 28-27 record overall and a 12-12 Big Ten record, which was good for a tie for a three-way tie for seventh in the conference. However, it was not enough to earn a bid to the Big Ten Tournament, as the Lions lost both tiebreakers for the eight-team tourney.

2020

The Storyline: Penn State opened it season by going 10-4 to open the 2020 season. During the 2020 season, the NCAA cancelled all remaining sporting contests due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Penn State and Miami (Ohio) was the final NCAA Division I baseball game to be completed during the 2020 season.

2021

The Storyline: Penn State and the Big Ten Conference played a Big Ten-only schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Penn State and the conference played a 42-game schedule.

2022

The Performance: Penn State returned to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2012, finishing with an 11-13 conference mark.

The Storyline: Penn State won Big Ten series against Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan State, sweeping the Spartans. Penn State earned a win in each series against Rutgers, No. 23 Maryland, Northwestern and Ohio State.

Penn State's non-conference wins included an 8-4 victory at West Virginia and a 19-6 win over Pitt in PNC Park, highlighted by a 14-run top of the ninth. Catcher Matt Wood earned first-team All-Big Ten after winning the Big Ten batting average title in the regular season (.395). Wood led the Nittany Lions in average (.379), hits (75), runs (55), homers (12), RBI (53), total bases (132), slugging percentage (.667), on-base percentage (.480) and walks (36). Wood's incredible campaign included a 26-game hit streak and a 36game reached-base streak. Wood was selected in the fourth round (132nd overall) in the MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers to become the highestselected position player in program history. Josh Spiegel was named All-Big Ten second team, batting .300 with a team-best 17 doubles to go with 10 hiomers and 43 RBI.

Penn State set a program record with 19 triples. On the mound, the Nittany Lions’ pitching staff set a program record with 503 strikeouts. Penn State tallied 21 games with 10+ strikeouts and 16 games allowing three or less earned runs.

The Result: The Nittany Lions earned the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and picked up a 5-2 win over No. 3 Iowa. PSU rallied back to tie the game in the ninth against Rutgers, but fell 5-4 in 10 innings, before falling against Iowa.
