Zinn First Season at Penn State 231-157 CAREER RECORD CINCINNATI, 1984

Jeff Zinn enters his first season at the helm of the Penn State men’s tennis program after spending the past 15 seasons with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Zinn’s career record speaks for itself, as he posted a superb 231-157 record while at Wake Forest, including a 78-62 record in the rugged Atlantic Coast Conference. Zinn has been credited with pushing the Wake Forest team from a perennial top-75 squad to a top-25 team. He also transformed the Demon Deacons into a top tier club in the ACC and NCAA. In just 15 years, Zinn led Wake Forest to 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including the current streak of 11 straight. Before his arrival in Winston-Salem, the Deacons never made the NCAA tournament. Under Zinn’s guidance, Wake Forest finished among the top four in the ACC seven times in his last 11 years there. The Deacons reached at least the semifinals of the ACC Championships for four straight years from 2007 to 2010, the longest such streak in the school’s rich tennis history. Last season, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record under Zinn’s watch, notching his 11th straight winning season. He led the Demon Deacons to 10 wins against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Jeff Zinn to the Penn State family as the head coach of our men’s tennis team,” said Director of Athletics Tim Curley. “He comes to Happy Valley from the tennis-rich tradition of the ACC and his success both within the conference and at the national level is evidence of his ability to energize a program. We believe that he will build upon the foundation we have and take us to the next level. His record speaks for itself.” Zinn has seen individuals blossom under his tutelage. In 2008, he led two players to the school’s first ever individual NCAA Championship as the duo claimed the NCAA’s Division I doubles title and became first team All-Americans. During Zinn’s 15 years at Wake, his players collected 23 AllACC honors. The school had only 12 all-conference players in the 42 years prior to his arrival. The 1984 Cincinnati graduate began his head coaching career as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Arkansas-Little Rock, where he was named the 1994 Sun Belt Coach of the Year and led Arkansas-Little Rock to the NCAA tournament in 1995 and 1996. He was also the 1992 Sun Belt Coach of the Year for his work with the Arkansas-Little Rock women’s team. He coached in Little Rock for six seasons, amassing a combined 133-88 record, including a 79-48 mark with the men. Zinn’s collegiate coaching career began at Northern Kentucky where he coached for one year (1990). In just one season, he led Northern Kentucky to a conference championship, earning conference Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his season at Northern Kentucky, he spent seven years as the Director of Tennis at the West Side Racquet Club in Cincinnati. An outstanding collegiate player himself, Zinn played number one singles and doubles at Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Serving as the Bearcat captain, he was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player as both a junior and senior. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in ‘84. Zinn then went on to earn his master’s degree in public administration from Arkansas-Little Rock in 1994 and worked as an adjunct professor in the sociology department. He is certified by both the USPTA and the USPTR.

Cagle

Chris Cagle enters his first season with the Nittany Lions as the assistant coach to Jeff Zinn. Cagle recently completed his second season as a volunteer assistant coach to Zinn at Wake Forest, where he played an active on-court role, helping the Demon Deacons reach the NCAA tournament. Last season, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record, notching his 11th straight winning season. The Demon Deacons won 10 matches against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Before joining the Demon Deacons, Cagle established himself as one of the top junior tennis coaches, coaching players to 10 national junior titles. He has also coached players in three of four Junior Grand Slams, and twice coached a player in the main draw of a Grand Slam. Cagle, originally from Greensboro, N.C., played as a member of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program from 1989-1993. He was the first two-time captain in North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program history. In 2009 reached the No. 1 ranking in United States men’s 30s singles competition. Cagle became the chairman for Junior Competition for North Carolina Tennis, serves on the Southern Tennis Junior Competition Board, and the Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. Board. He was the tournament director for the 2010 Boys’ 12 and Under National Clay Court Clay Court Championships. In 2010, Cagle received the Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award from North Carolina Tennis for his contributions to junior tennis.

Sandgren

Davey Sandgren will begin his first full season serving as a volunteer assistant for the Penn State men’s tennis team. Sandgren, a 2010 graduate of Tennessee, joins the Nittany Lions after an illustrious collegiate career. He posted a career singles record of 84-71, including an 18-8 performance in his senior season at Tennessee. The Volunteer standout climbed as high as No. 69 in the ITA singles rankings while with the Volunteers. The Gallatin, Tenn. native posted his most impressive numbers on the doubles court though. Sandgren went 118-54 in career doubles play, including a 42-9 senior season. Sandgren partnered with teammate, John Patrick-Smith, to reach the doubles national championships match during their junior season. During their senior campaign, the duo also rose to the No. 1 ITA rank. They claimed the 2009 SEC Coaches Indoor Championships and the Flight “A” bracket of the 2009 UVA Ranked Plus One Invitational tournament. Sandgren earned a number of honors during his playing career, including being named to the 2010 ITA All-America team and being named the 2010 ITA Ohio Valley Region Senior Player of the Year during his senior season. He teamed up with Patrick-Smith again to reach the finals in 2010 NCAA Tournament doubles competition. The Tennessean was also named to the All-SEC First Team in 2010 and earned second team honors in 2007. Sandgren also was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll all four years at Tennessee.

From 2004-06, Cagle served on the Cystic Fibrosis Tennis Auction Ball Committee. In 2006, he took the Co-Chair position for the auction ball, which raised over $200,000 to fight Cystic Fibrosis that year.

Earned a key doubles victory on Mar. 7 over Purdue’s Eric Ramos and Paul Foley (9-7)...Picked up an 8-4 victory over Middle Tennessee State’s Matthew Langley and Alex McCann on March 20 at the Blue-Gray Classic...Teamed up with Ryan Gormley on April 9 to defeat Michigan’s Chris Madden and Chris Cha (8-4)...Earned a second consecutive win with Gormley two days later, downing Michigan State’s Clark Richardson and Dennis Bogatov (8-3). 2008-09 Season (Clemson): Went 5-4 overall in singles action during his freshman year at Clemson...All five of his wins came in the fall...Posted a 2-3 overall doubles record.

Hanzlik was ranked in the top eight junior players in his native Czech Republic. Hanzlik participated in the junior qualifying draws of the French Open and U.S. Open and entered the main draw of the prestigious Orange Bowl Junior Championship. During the 2010-11 season, senior Eddie Bourchier eclipsed a major milestone in the Penn State recordbooks. The Australian native teamed with upstart-freshman, Russell Bader, to earn his 78th career doubles victory, tying assistant coach Brendan Lynch. The pair defeated Bloomsburg’s Rikcy Dove and Mark Schroeder, 8-3. Bourchier and Bader finally blew past No. 10 Illinois’ Johnny Hamui and Alden, 8-4, Mar. 25, 2011 into first place all-time. Bourcier finished the season with a 23-12 doubles record on the season and 83 career doubles victories.

Penn State opened the season at No. 69. After an opening weekend sweep of St. Bonaventure and Lehigh, the Nittany Lions dropped to No. 71 in the ITA Top-75. Following a victory over No. 64 Cornell and a double-header sweep of Buffalo (5-2) and Bucknell (6-1), Penn State moved back into the top-75 at No. 72. Finally, after participating in the Blue-Gray Tournament and taking on No. 3 Ohio State, the Nittany Lions appeared in the ranking for their final time, cracking in at No. 70.

Penn State headed to Montgomery, Ala. to compete in the annual Blue-Gray Tournament from Feb. 25-Feb. 27. The Nittany Lion dropped their opening match to No. 26 Notre Dame (4-0). The team could not overcome No. 32 Alabama on day two of the competition, falling ,4-1. Finally, the Nittany Lions dropped their final match of the season against No. 36 Boise State, 4-1. Penn State did crack to the Top-75 again after taking on impressive competition.

Hot Start The Nittany Lions began the 2010-2011 campaign with a burst. An opening day double-header sweep against St. Bonaventure (6-1) and Lehigh (6-1) got Penn State’s season rolling in the right direction. A 5-2 victory over No. 64 Cornell to open Feb. prushed the Lions to 4-2 and beack into the rankings at No. 72.

Rough Road in the Big Ten Penn State struggled during Big Ten play in 2011. The Nittany Lions came within one point of defeating power-house conference foes on serveral occassions. After 10 matches, the team headed into the Big Ten Tournament with an 0-10 record in conference. Penn State dropped their opening round match against No. 71 Wisconsin, 4-1.

SARNI TENNIS CENTER The Penn State tennis facilities are first-rate. In addition to the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center which houses four Decoturf courts, a state-of-the-art outdoor facility opened in September of 1998. The second-to-none facility was named the USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999, just one year after its opening.

The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that features seven lighted Plexi-cushion courts including a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans; a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms; and a racket stringing area. Plans are underway to purchase a major scoreboard to enhance the facility. The addition of this wonderful factility now means that Penn State can enter bids to host major collegiates championships. State-of-the-art stadium lighting also allows for the Nittany Lions to schedule evening matches, host large tournaments and build a sense of excitement about Penn State tennis going into the future. Vincent and Sandra Sarni got the ball rolling for the facility with their gift of $675,000. Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer of PPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of the Sarni is a Penn State graduate, although they have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had

children attend Penn State. In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.
