Finding a more complete set of on-campus golf facilities that surpasses what Penn State has to offer is pretty difficult. With two 18-hole courses and an array of sparkling new practice facilities, it is easy to see why Penn State golfers have the opportunity to develop their games. Penn State sits at the center of what may be the finest group of golf courses near any campus. The University’s Blue Course and White Course complex are tied for largest public golf facility in Pennsylvania. The University's Blue and White Courses, Toftrees Resort, Centre Hills Country Club, and Elks Country Club are conveniently situated within 10 minutes of campus. Coach St. Pierre relates, “These facilities help us maintain our edge with other top programs and gives us a chance to host major championships.” Penn State’s Blue and White courses have recently undergone renovation with the majority of the changes occurring on the Blue Course, which plays host to the tournaments and championships that are hosted by the Penn State golf programs. With the addition of new tee boxes, 600 yards were added to the Blue Course, bringing the total yardage to approximately 7150 yards. Additionally, the championship course just finished undergoing a major redesign to both the 7th & 8th holes. To stiffen the overall challenge, over 20 strategic bunkers were placed in the layout as well as three new water hazards. The Big Ten Conference is well known for the outstanding caliber of its university owned golf courses, and with these updates the Penn State courses will sit proudly among the top in that group. The Blue Course annually hosts Penn State’s Rutherford Invitational as well as the Nittany Lion Invitational on the women’s side. The Blue Course has hosted a number of junior tournaments, including the Pennsylvania High School Championship from 1982-2001, the PGA Junior Series as well as the FCWT, giving junior golfers an opportunity to see State College as well as the Nittany Lion Facilities.

The White Course provides a challenging alternative to the newer Blue Course. With holes dating back to 1922, the White Course will test even the most skilled player. The older course provides smaller crowned greens adding to the character and demanding a creative short game. The sculpted bunkering that was done in the 1920’s has been photographed and studied by some of today’s top architects. The Walker Clubhouse, which was recently renovated, offers a complete golf shop and a cafe that overlooks the course. The clubhouse also features a large seating area for tournament meetings and receptions. The practice areas used by the Nittany Lions are the newest parts of the course. The ample grass range located at the opposite end of the public range was expanded and made into a driving range that is only used by Penn State golfers, providing an area for the Lions to practice just about any shot in the bag. The area has three tiered blue grass practice areas, two ample fairway bunkers adjacent to the tees, as well as a rolling fairway for players to work on un-even lies. A small pitching green and bunker were also put into place with the undulated fairway. This undulating fairway brings a unique quality to Penn State’s practice opportunities. The other newest practice area for the Nittany Lions is a quiet one-acre short-game facility behind the 14th green. There are two large greens with several bunkers, level & un-level lies, up-hill & down-hill shots, and two different practice fairways of 50 and 100 yards. One green is used for non-impact shots like putting and chipping, and the second with the two connected fairways for pitching, bunker play, and all types of creative short game shots.

The renovations don’t stop at the short-game facility and the driving range. A team room for the Nittany Lion golfers is under construction as well. This facility includes a lockerroom for both the women’s and men’s teams, coaches offices, a player lounge area and teaching room complete with a VH1 system for video taping. The state-of-theart facility features heated stalls for hitting outdoors during inclement weather. During the winter months, the golf team takes up residence in spacious Holuba Hall. Within the 118,000-square-foot artificial turf practice area, players can work on the fine points of their entire game. With a ceiling height of 75 feet, they can use every club in the bag and observe their full flight with the use of low compression "Cayman" golf balls. These are the same golf balls that were used at the PGA's 2000 Teaching & Coaching Summit. The field is brand new field turf with imitation grass and subsurface. Adding to an array of practice putting greens and a driving range, Penn State recently completed five target greens on the range and a large short game practice area. The vast short game area includes bunkers and other features giving the players a chance to hone their chipping and bunkerplay skills.

Head Coach Denise St. Pierre

Denise

ST. PIERRE 17th Year Penn State, ‘83

2008 PALMER AWARD WINNER

Experience is the best teacher...

Denise St.Pierre is entering her 17th season as the Penn State head women’s golf coach. St. Pierre draws from her experience as a collegiate golfer as well as a PGA teaching professional to help her student-athletes reach their full potential. In addition to coaching the Nittany Lions, St. Pierre has also coached in international competitions throughout her coaching career.

In August of 2004, St. Pierre helped coach the U.S. team at the World University Games in Thailand where they won the gold medal. Penn State’s Katie Futcher captured the individual title in that event.

In June of 1999, St. Pierre was selected by the NGCA to coach the U.S. team at the U.S./Japan Collegiate Golf Championships in Chiba, Japan, where the Americans captured their fourth consecutive title.

In its February 2002 issue, Golf for Women magazine named St. Pierre to its “Top 50 Women PGA/LPGA Instructors” list.

St. Pierre has served as President of the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). While president, she led the membership in volunteer work in New Orleans in relief of Hurricane Katrina. At the annual NGCA convention that had to be moved from New Orleans to Tahoe, Nevada, St. Pierre introduced an idea to the membership that called for as many golf programs as possible around the country to conduct fundraisers to raise money for the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. Through the efforts of the Nittany Lion women’s golf team as well as those by more than 30 other women’s golf programs around the country, the NGCA raised $60,000 to build a home for a displaced family in New Orleans. The efforts of the NGCA culminated last June when St. Pierre and several of her colleagues traveled to New Orleans and volunteered to help finish building the house that they sponsored through the Habitat for Humanity.

Prior to the start of last year, St. Pierre served as the assistant coach of the United States women’s golf team at the World University Games held in Torino, Italy for the second time after also serving as the coach in 2004. She led the team to a gold medal for the second straight time as well.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., St. Pierre chose Penn State for its academic and athletic reputation. As a Nittany Lion herself, St. Pierre’s team won several team titles as well as qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

After her graduation in 1983, St. Pierre completed an apprenticeship with the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) at the Innisbrook Resort in Tarpon Springs, Fla. In 1985, she returned to the University as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams under Mary Kennedy-Zierke. She earned 1991 Mid-Atlantic/East Region Coach-of-the-Year honors. 6

PENN STATE 2009-2010 WOMEN’S GOLF

From 2000-2004, St. Pierre served as secretary for the National Golf Coaches Association, prior to becoming the president of the NGCA following her time as secretary. St. Pierre has been a guest lecturer for the PGA teaching and coaching summit as well as the National Golf Foundation.

A Class A member of the PGA, the Nittany Lion coach has taught in New York and Florida and is currently the director of instruction at the Penn State golf courses. During the winter, St. Pierre teaches a golf conditioning class for the local community, as well as instructing health and human development classes at Penn State. She also serves as the director for the Penn State summer golf schools, and co-directs five junior camps. In addition to all that, St. Pierre is the author of Golf Fundamentals, an instructional book for recreational players.

St. Pierre offers more than just experience to her athletes; she brings with her knowledge of the sport and familiarity with the University. She had a very successful career at Penn State and looks forward to more growth and success for the Nittany Lion women. St. Pierre wants to provide life guidance as well as athletic guidance.

“It is about them being balanced and how we can encompass academics and personal growth in order for our players to reach their potential,” St. Pierre says. Players face challenges both on and off the course that affect how they play their game. As a coach, she believes she must be aware of those factors in order to help the player cope on the course.

“You have to know first what you want,” she adds. “I believe every player has more potential than they realize. It is my job to help draw that potential out of them.”

St. Pierre wants her players to graduate from the program not only better golfers but also better people.

Head Coach Denise St. Pierre “In order to uphold the Penn State tradition of academic and athletic excellence,” says St. Pierre, “we provide each player with a safe environment to play the game at the highest level while balancing her time in the classroom.”

Every coach has a different strategy on how to run a team. Denise St. Pierre’s is not just centered around golf but around education and dreams.

“I try to be supportive of student-athletes in both their athletic and academic endeavors while here at Penn State,” says the 1991 Mid-Atlantic/East Region Coach-of-the-Year.

She understands that golf is not her student-athletes’ entire life. Each student-athlete is also at Penn State to receive an education and a life experience.

“My main job as a coach is to discuss what our [team’s] dreams and aspirations are while we’re here...my goals are to help them reach theirs...I am a vehicle to allow my players to get where they want to go.”

She wants her players to improve themselves in all aspects of life- as a competitor, an athlete and a person- during their time at Penn State.

This Class A teaching professional hopes that her players can develop “using my background as a player...I can display the right attitude and the right actions that I want them to follow.”

St. Pierre prepares her players for tournaments, both mentally and physically. The most important thing for her is to have as much information about a tournament, including climate, environment, grass, layout of the golf course and the competition.

Physically, she has her players practice the things that are most likely to occur at those sites.

“The more you know about the situation, the better you can prepare yourself both mentally and physically. The fewer the surprises, the more confident we can be,” says the Nittany Lion head coach.

DOELL

5th Year Penn State, ‘00

LPGA CLASS A MEMBER

Former Nittany Lion in 5th year as coach... Sara Doell, a Penn State alum and former standout golfer on the Nittany Lion women’s golf team, enters her fifth season as an assistant women’s golf coach. She returned to her alma mater after more than four years as an assistant golf professional at a country club in North Carolina. Possessing significant college and professional experience, Doell assists in the duties of recruiting, camps, instruction, and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the women’s golf program. In 2006, Doell was instrumental in helping to raise funds for Project Team Build, a major initiative by the National Golf Coaches’ Association to sponsor the building of a house through Habitat for Humanity in the New Orleans area. The initiative, which was spearheaded by head coach Denise St. Pierre, was a complete success as Doell played a huge role in coordinating the effort along with St. Pierre. In addition to her work on Project Team Build, Doell also has a role in coordinating the community service projects that the women’s golf team takes part in throughout the year. Doell graduated from Penn State University in 2000 with a degree in Media Studies, focusing on the portrayals of women in sports media. On scholarship from 1996-2000, Doell left a lasting impression on the Nittany Lion golf program. Not only does Doell currently hold the Penn State record for the lowest 54 hole score (215) she was team captain for the Lions from 1999-2000. That same year Doell won the Women’s Golf Academic and Athletic Achievement award, the Mary Kennedy-Zierke award and the Penn State Spiritus Lionus Academic Leadership Award. The Kennedy-Zierke award is given annually to the student-athlete who provides outstanding leadership and dedication as a varsity golfer. In 1998, she was the New York State Amateur Champion. Doell also became the Women’s Rochester District Amateur Champion in both 1997 and 2000. During college, Doell volunteered as an LPGA Crayola Junior Golf Clinic instructor. She also volunteered as an instructor for the Webster Golf Camp in Webster, N.Y., for PGA Class A member and instructor, Debby Murphy. After graduation, Doell served as the Volunteer Assistant Women’s Golf Coach at Penn State for the fall semester in 2000. From 2001-2005, Doell was the Assistant Golf Professional at the Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is a Class A Member of the LPGA.

PENN STATE 2009-2010 WOMEN’S GOLF

Season Outlook The Penn State women’s golf team will head into the 2009-10 season with a young roster full of talent and potential. Six seasoned veterans will be joined by four skilled new faces to lead the Nittany Lion squad into action in the upcoming campaign. The top six golfers from last year’s squad all return. By the end of the year, juniors Brianna Malcolmson, Giulia Carando and Victoria Arena and seniors Lindsay Cullen and Katherine Murphy had all shown the ability to top the Penn State leaderboard. Junior Gia Fanelli also returns for her third season of play with Penn State. Malcolmson was Penn State’s top finisher in seven of Penn State’s 11 tournaments last year, including two runner-up finishes (Bucknell Invitational and First Market Bank Intercollegiate). She ended the campaign with a team-best 77.8 season average, including a season low round of 68 in the Canes and Cardinal Classic.

I expect the leadership to come from some of our returning players who have been in the starting line-up for the last couple years. Nittany Lions in the Pros Katie Futcher in the LPGA...

Futcher competed in her first career major when she played in the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open, shooting a finalround 79 to tie for 58th overall with a 73-76-76-79-304 at Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

Katie Futcher's golf career did not end when she graduated from in 2003. The former Nittany Lion turned professional in 2004 and continues to make a name for herself in the LPGA.

During her rookie year in the LPGA, Katie had some impressive performances. In March 2006, she tied for seventh place in the MasterCard Classic with a three-round score of 211 and a low round of 6 in the final round. She was also the first round leader of the Wendy’s Championships for Children after she shot 66.

With records at Penn State including All-Time Best Averages (74.03) and honors such as NCAA All-American and NCAA Academic All-American, it is not a surprise that Katie has come so far since graduation. A two time NCAA All-American with the Nittany Lions, Futcher was also a twotime All-Big Ten selection and a three-time NCAA Academic All-America selection. She was also a member of the United State team at the World University Games held in Thailand, where she was coached by Penn State coach Denise St. Pierre. When Futcher began her professional career, she was a member of the Futures Golf Tour , a professional golf tour to promote a successful transition from amateur golf to the LPGA.

After tying for fourth place at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, Futcher earned exempt status for the 2006 season. Since joining the tour, Katie has played in nearly 80 events. With all the success that Katie Futcher has had this early in her professional career, it is inevitable that she will continue to improve her game in the future.

The State College Area

L

ocated among mountains and valleys in the exact geographic center of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Centre County thrives on its ability to blend education with industry, technology, historic shopping districts and farming communities.

The heart of the Centre Region is State College, a community featuring the best that life has to offer, in education, commerce, culture and recreation.

This mixture of the cosmopolitan and pastoral works so well that to many the Centre Region is known as “Happy Valley." The region is frequently ranked near the top of the charts by Money magazine’s “Best Places To Live" and Rand McNally’s “Retirement Places Rated Guide." In the late 1980’s, Psychology Today called State College the least stressful place in the United States.

Centre County is home to The Pennsylvania State University, one of the finest teaching and research institutions in the land. Penn State’s impact is great, from the touring Broadway shows that visit campus to two recent additions: the Penn State Research Park and the 15,261-seat Bryce Jordan Center.

The ebb-and-flow of students and activity in State College creates a vital downtown that always is bustling, but this is especially so during home football weekends in the fall and the nationally-acclaimed Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts every July. Escape isn’t far away. Less than 20 minutes from campus are quiet towns and villages with charms of their very own, as well as mountains, lakes and roaring streams and brooks.
