Jeff Thompson is entering his second year as the head coach of Penn State women’s gymnastics after being named the ninth head coach in program history on July 15, 2010. The two-time SEC Coach of the Year, joined the Nittany Lion family in 2010 after 11 successful years at Auburn University in Alabama. He is joined at Penn State by his wife Rachelle, who serves as the associate head coach. Despite facing stiff competition in the SEC, Thompson’s 4

teams improved each year. The Tigers qualified for NCAA Regionals eight consecutive years. In 2010, Thompson coached Auburn to upset victories against then No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Kentucky. In addition, the Tigers defeated then No. 8 and five-time defending National Champion Georgia for the first time in program history. As a coaching team at Auburn, the Thompsons produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnast of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. They coached nine NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and four NCAA Regional Event Champions. Their gymnasts also excelled in the classroom and in the community in their 11 years with the program. There were three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, three CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District members, 41 NACGC/W Academic All-Americans and 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections. Prior to arriving at Auburn, Thompson was the assistant coach at Louisiana State University from 1994-99 and was the Junior Olympic Program Director at the Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy in Fairfield, Ohio from 1993-94. Thompson also held assistant coaching positions at two Big Ten institutions, Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as serving as a graduate assistant coach at Kentucky. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from Kentucky in 1985. He went on to receive a Master of Science in Biomechanics in 1995. Jeff and Rachelle have two sons, Parker (16) and Griffin (14).

THOMPSON Second Year at Penn State LSU • 2004

Rachelle Thompson begins her second season as the associate head coach of the Penn State women’s gymnastics program. Prior to Penn State, Thompson spent 11 years at Auburn University in Alabama. Her husband, Jeff, serves as the head coach. During her first season as the associate head coach at Penn State, Thompson helped coach the Nittany Lions to a second place finish in the 2011 Big Ten Championship with two Nittany Lions capturing individual event titles. Penn State also earned a berth in the NCAA Regional Championships as the No. 2 seed. Sharaya Musser advanced to the NCAA National Championships representing the Nittany Lions. Thompson joined the Auburn staff in 1999 as a choreographer and volunteer coach before being promoted to assistant coach in 2002 and associate head coach in 2006. Her responsibilities included, but were not limited to, coaching beam and floor, choreographing beam and floor routines, managing all meet contracts, scheduling community service projects, recruiting, as well as handling travel arrangements and the budget. She was a two-time

Auburn University Assistant Coach of the Year and was selected the 2008 NACGC/W Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year. As a coaching team at Auburn, the Thompsons produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnasts of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. They coached nine NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and four NCAA Regional Event Champions. Their gymnasts also excelled in the classroom and in the community. They had three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, three CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District members, 41 NACGC/W Academic All-Americans and 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections. She was a finalist for the American Award honoring the Top Five Senior Gymnasts, as well as a finalist for the HondaBroderick Cup. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science and Education from Auburn. Rachelle and Jeff have two sons, Parker (16) and Griffin (14).

MONAHAN Fourth Year at Penn State Ohio State • 2006

Assistant coach Randy Monahan enters his fourth season with the Penn State women’s gymnastics program. With the Nittany Lions, Monahan aids in recruiting and training student-athletes along with various other aspects of the program. “Randy is one of the finest assistant coaches in NCAA Gymnastics,” said head coach Jeff Thompson. “His competitive experience combined with his technical knowledge enables him to put his coaching into terms that every one of our gymnasts can understand and use. He not only can tell them ‘why’ it will work, he can tell them how it will ‘feel’ to do it that way. His years of experience as a competitor have also helped him develop our strength and conditioning program. We use nothing but our own body weight to develop the strength, flexibility and endurance that we require in a way that makes sense to everyone on the team. He is also a great recruiter and has been instrumental in helping us land several top gymnasts over the past two seasons.” Monahan was a member of the Ohio State men’s team from 2001 to 2005 and was a seven-time All-American with the Buckeyes, who captured Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2005. He was the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and also captured the Big Ten All-Around title in 2003 and 2004 and was a Nissen-Emery Finalist in 2005, finishing second in the all-around at the NCAA Championships that same year. Monahan comes to Penn State from the club coaching ranks, most recently with Artistic Sports Academy Plus out of Harrisburg, Pa. At Artistics Sports, Monahan assisted the head coach in instruction and analysis of youth athletes as well as various coaching and instructional responsibilities. He was also employed by EJM Food Corporation as a Quality Control Specialist. Prior to his time in the Harrisburg area, Monahan was a coach at Buckeye Gymnastics where he worked with a wide variety of athletes from levels 4-10. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Ohio State men’s team where he assisted in instructional and managerial capacities as well as having training and competitive responsibilities. Monahan graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human ecology. Monahan is married to volunteer assistant coach Jillian Monahan. They reside in State College.

Building A Team... While Penn State women’s gymnastics is a team, it’s also a family. It is a bond that is strengthened through blood, sweat and tears in the gym and laughter, helping hands and teamwork out of the gym. All of these components build trust, friendships and strong ties, which are necessary to take the team to the next level and have fun along the way. Whether it’s the traditional team run up Mt. 2011 Season Notes Ettl Defends Big Ten Uneven Bars Title Junior bars specialist Natalie Ettl defended her 2010 uneven bars title at the 2011 Big Ten Championship. She scored a 9.925 to take the title. It was her eighth top five finish of the season. Penn State Reaches Coveted 197 For the first time since 2001, the Nittany Lions scored a 197-plus. In a tri-meet with Maryland and N.C. State, the Nittany Lions took first place with a 197.075. The squad put up season-high numbers on vault, beam and floor. Musser Picks Up GOW Honors For the third week in a row, sophomore Sharaya Musser was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week. She guided Penn State to a season-best 197.075 to take first place in the home finale on March 4. Musser secured all four individual event titles on her way to a career-high 39.725 to earn the all-around crown.

Junior Daryl Konsevick was named the Ann Carr award winner on March 4, 2011 for her performance in the tri-meet with Maryland & N.C. State. Musser Named Honda Award Finalist Penn State women’s gymnastics sophomore Sharaya Musser was named one of four finalists for the 2010-11 Honda Sports Award to determine the top woman collegiate athlete in gymnastics. Michigan’s Kylee Botterman, Alabama’s Kayla Hoffman and UCLA’s Brittani McCullough were the other three nominees. Musser, Stine, Merriam Reach Podium at Regionals Three Nittany Lions earned spots on the podium at NCAA Regionals. Sophomore Sharaya Musser finished third in the all-around, fifth on beam and second on vault. She was part of a six-way tie for third on bars with teammates Madison Merriam and Alex Stine. Penn State Takes Third At Regionals, Musser Advances to Nationals The Nittany Lions finished third at the NCAA Regional held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on April 2 with a score of 195.850, .075 behind second place Illinois. Despite not advancing as a team, sophomore Sharaya Musser finished third in the all-around to earn a trip to Nationals. Penn State Earns No. 2 Seed to NCAA Regional Championships Penn State was selected as one of six teams to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships on April 2 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It was Penn State’s 37th appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships. The Nittany Lions joined No. 2 Alabama, No. 14 Illinois, No. 22 Auburn, No. 25 Central Michigan and Kentucky at the meet. Three Named All-Big Ten Three Nittany Lions earned All-Big Ten honors, conference officials announced at the 2011 Big Ten Championship banquet on Friday, March 19 in Minneapolis, Minn. Junior Natalie Ettl and sophomore Sharaya Musser were both selected to the All-Big Ten first team and sophomore Madison Merriam garnered Second Team accolades. Ettl was also Penn State’s honoree for the Sportsmanship Award. The awards mark the 45th, 46th and 47th total All-Big Ten honors for the Nittany Lions since joining the league for the 1992 season. These are the second conference honors for Musser and Ettl and the first for Merriam. Musser Takes All-Around, Vault Crowns at Big Tens Sophomore Sharaya Musser kept the Big Ten all-around title in Nittany Lion hands winning the title with a 39.475 at the Big Ten Championship on March 19 hosted by Minnesota. Musser was also crowned co-champion on vault after scoring a 9.900 on the event to tie with Amber See of Illinois.

Konsevick Earns Ann Carr Award Junior Daryl Konsevick was integral to Penn State’s tri-meet victory of March 4. The Rutherford, N.J. native posted a career-best 9.900 on beam to claim second place on the event. She also competed on floor where she finished eighth with a 9.825. Musser Garners GOW Laurels Sophomore Sharaya Musser picked up her third conference gymnast of the week award on Feb. 28. Musser, the Ann Carr Award winner in the Feb. 26 meet against Ohio State, won the all-around with a 39.325. She also picked up individual event titles on vault, bars and beam. Penn State Breaks Into Top 10 For the first time since 2006 during the regular season, the Nittany Lions broke into the top 10 in the GymInfo National Rankings. PSU jumped eight spots from No. 18 after posting a 196.600 at Maryland on Feb. 18. Ranked No. 10 overall, PSU was also ranked in the top 25 on three events, including the uneven bars (No. 7), beam (No. 8) and vault (No. 20). Musser Named GOW Sophomore Sharaya Musser was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the week for the second time in 2011 on Feb. 21. Musser led the Nittany Lions to a season-high 196.600 at Maryland on Feb. 18. Musser claimed the allaround title at Maryland, tying her season high with a 39.575. She also earned titles on floor, scoring a career-high 9.950, and on beam with a 9.925. She tied for third on vault (9.875) and placed fifth on bars with a 9.825. Three Nittany Lions Lead in AA In a stellar team performance at UNC on Feb. 11, the Nittany Lions claimed the top three spots in the all-around. Sophomore Sharaya Musser posted a 39.575, just .025 short of her personal best, for the crown. Teammates Madison Merriam and Whitney Bencsko took second and third, respectively. Musser Tabbed Big Ten GOW Sophomore Sharaya Musser earned Co-Big Ten Gymnast of the Week laurels on Jan. 24. She turned in two first place performances en route to the all-around title against New Hampshire. Musser scored a season-high 39.400 in the all-around for first place, as well as a 9.925 on vault and 9.875 on beam to aid in PSU’s home opening win. We were rewarded for our hard work on vault and floor with our highest scores on those two events. Those are the two events we felt we needed the most improvement and are happy we were able to do that in competition. Although we put ourselves under pressure falling on our first two balance beam routines, the girls showed tremendous character by finishing that event off strong leading into unbelievable floor performances. It seemed like the people that were here were really involved in the meet. The Nittany Lions closed out the meet on beam where five Lions placed in the top six. Hover took sixth with a 9.700, while Bencsko and Bogar each scored a 9.725 for fourth. Konsevick took second place with a 9.775 and Musser earned her third individual event title of the evening with a 9.875.

2011 Meet Summaries at Maryland with Rutgers and William & Mary • February 18 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 18th-ranked Penn State women’s gymnastics team scored a season-high 196.600 to take first place in the quad meet at Maryland. Maryland finished second with a 195.300, Rutgers took third with a 192.975 and William & Mary finished fourth with a 186.975. As a team, Penn State scored a 48.925 on vault, a 49.375 on bars, a 49.200 on beam and a 49.100 on floor. 2011 Meet Summaries at Ohio State • February 26 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 10 Penn State women’s gymnastics team posted a 196.325 to earn the win against No. 17 Ohio State Saturday. The Buckeyes scored a 195.900. “It was one of the most exciting gymnastics meets that I’ve been part of in a long time,” said head coach Jeff Thompson. “It came down to the final performer on both sides and it’s not coincidental that our word for the day was `fight.’ We had talked in the locker room about women with breast cancer fighting with their lives, with some winning the fight and some losing, as well as what it’s like to be the family of those individuals. The last five girls on floor all really grabbed hold of the rope and each fought until the very end to get us the win.” Penn State sophomore Sharaya Musser won the all-around with a combined score of 39.550. Ohio State’s Melanie Shaffer was second with a 39.350. Benscko finished with a 39.325, while Merriam posted a 38.500. Musser also earned the Ann Carr Award as the meet’s Most Inspirational Gymnast. The Nittany Lions really hit their stride on the uneven bars, which has been the strongest scoring event for Penn State most of the season. The top five scorers on the uneven bars were all Nittany Lions, including a 9.925 for Musser, which tied her career high and marks her high for the season. Three other Nittany Lions posted above a 9.800 in the event including 9.850 from junior Whitney Bencsko, a 9.850 from junior Alex Stine, which ties her career high, and a 9.800 from junior Natalie Ettl. Michigan took the conference crown for the fifth straight season with a 196.600. Illinois finished third with a 196.075, Minnesota placed fourth with a 195.325, Ohio State claimed fifth with a 194.900, Iowa took sixth with a 194.850 and Michigan State scored a 194.425 for seventh. The Nittany Lions were .075 behind second place finisher Illinois. Alabama won the meet with a 197.275, Illinois was second with a 195.925, Auburn took fourth with a 195.600, Kentucky placed fifth with a 195.175 and Central Michigan scored a 195.075 for sixth. NCAA Championships • April 15 CLEVELAND, Ohio - Penn State sophomore women’s gymnast Sharaya Musser finished 12th in the all-around in the first session of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship Friday afternoon in Cleveland. She scored a 38.600. Musser, who was rotating with UCLA, opened the meet with a bye before moving to floor, recording a 9.700. On vault in the third rotation, she posted a 9.850 to tie for 15th. After another bye, Musser headed to the uneven bars where she scored a 9.750. Musser closed out the meet on beam earning a 9.300. Musser advanced to the Championship competition as one of 12 Regional Championship all-arounders not on a qualifying team. Ann Carr Award

ANN CARR AWARD Ann Carr was a member of the Penn State women’s gymnastics team from 1977-80. Carr was a two-time National Champion in the all-around (‘77 & ‘78) and won titles on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise in 1978. She is Penn State’s only four-time All-American, which she earned on the uneven bars. Carr was also a three-time All-American in the all-around, as well as on vault, beam and floor exercise. The Ann Carr Award is given to the gymnast who provides the most inspirational performance at each home meet. Below are the four honorees from 2010.

Sophomore Madison Merriam earned the Ann Carr award on Jan. 22 after winning two individual event titles in a dual meat with UNH.

Junior Whitney Bencsko competed in the all-around for the first time in 2011 on Feb. 6 to garner the Ann Carr award.

Sophomore Sharaya Musser was the Ann Carr award winner on Feb. 26 after she won three individual event titles and the all-around.

Historic Rec Hall

The Nittany Lion gymnastics squad will host four home meets during the 2012 season. Rec Hall (pictured above) is the home of Nittany Lion gymnastics competition and has served as the home of the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics Championships and Regional and NCAA Championship competition. The Penn State gymnastics facilities fall into two categories: rich in tradition with an extensive gymnastics history, or modern, state of the art and brand new. Recreation Building, as it is officially named, has the tradition. Since 1943, the gymnasium has hosted championship and international gymnastic meets. It has been the site of four Olympic Trials, 15 international meets, and six national collegiate gymnastics championships. In 1984, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2008 and 2010, Rec Hall was the site of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Northeast Regional Meets. A gymnastics-friendly arena, Rec Hall was also the site for the 2000 and 2007 Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships. Rec Hall was built in 1929 and remodeled in 1965. The seating increased rom 5,000 to 7,200, but recent changes have resulted in a current capacity of 5,812.

While Rec Hall hosts Penn State’s competitive meets, the women’s gymnastics team practices in the White Building. The White Building is located in the middle of campus and was the site of the Nittany Lions’ first competitions. The White Building facility was renovated once again prior to the 2001 season. The 13,400 square feet of renovated space cost nearly $2 million to complete. The additions to the facility included loose foam and resi-pits. The extra space allows extra room for three sets of equipment, making this one of the finest collegiate facilities in the nation. The Nittany Lions also utilize the intercollegiate weight room in Rec Hall. The facility is used by intercollegiate athletes only and is specially designed to fit the needs of an intercollegiate varsity squad.

Considered a preferred site for championship events in gymnastics, Rec Hall has scoreboards on the East and West ends designed for gymnastics scoring. Olympians Cathy Rigby from the United States and Ludmilla Tourischeva from the Soviet Union have competed in Rec Hall. The top crowd ever in Rec Hall - 8,700 - was on hand when the Nittany Lions hosted No. 1 Utah on March 11, 1981. When Penn State met Cal State - Fullerton on Feb. 2, 1980, the attendance was 8,532. Gymnastics Facilities

The Penn State women’s gymnastics team trains in the White Building, centrally located on the Penn State campus. The squad’s training base is situated just one block from the dormitory that houses many of Penn State’s gymnasts. The White Building has been home to the Nittany Lion gymnastics team since 1976. Extensively renovated during the summer and fall of 2000 at a cost of nearly two million dollars, the gym’s design and its amenities make it one of the finest gymnastics facilities in the country. The state-of-the-art facility features 13,400 square feet of training space which is nearly twice the size of most collegiate facilities. The team has the benefit of working on new AAI equipment and landing mats at a multitude of training stations. There are two 40 square foot floor exercise systems, each with a Resi pit adjacent for tumbling, and a 68-foot tumbling strip where gymnasts can choose between a Resi pit or a deep foam pit landing. Three vaulting stations are available, maximizing the gymnasts’ ability to train using safe and effective progressions. Solid foam landing pits are available for every event. Complete with new heating and air conditioning systems, upgraded lighting and a unique architectural design, the gym is not only functional but beautiful, as well. Motorized blinds have been installed to filter out sunlight from the 32 spacious windows which adorn the gym.

Academic Success Penn State is not only among the top teams in the nation athletically, but also academically. The Nittany Lions consistently produce one of the highest team grade point averages in the country while also racking up several of the highest individual grade point averages. In 2009 Penn State finished 35th in the nation with a team GPA of 3.28 and four Nittany Lion studentathletes were named Scholar Athletes by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). To be recognized as a Scholar Athlete, students must have a 3.50 grade point average or higher.

The women’s gymnastics program at Penn State prides itself on excellence, both in the gym and in the classroom. One of the primary academic resources for gymnasts is the Morgan Academic Center. Located in MBNA Building in the middle of campus, the center provides a full range of services for intercollegiate athletes, including academic advising, career counseling, sports psychology, and sports research. The purpose of the center is to help the student-athlete make normal progress toward graduation while managing the demands associated with attending a major NCAA Division I institution. Specific objectives include helping student-athletes develop individualized academic plans, providing the means by which student-athletes can assume full responsibility for their education, and assisting freshman student-athletes in making a successful transition to college life. That philosophy is evident in the Big Ten Academic All-Conference team. The Nittany Lions, in their 19 years in the Big Ten, have placed 130 student-athletes on the Academic All-Conference team.
