Chris Cagle enters his seventh season with the Nittany Lions, his fourth full season as the Head Coach of the women’s tennis team. Cagle was announced Interim Head Coach for the women’s tennis team in December of 2013. In the spring 2017 season, Cagle led the team in backto-back Big Ten Conference wins over Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cagle led two players to receiving ITA National Rankings in singles. Katia Blik reached No. 81 in the country and Devan McCluskey reached No. 101. Blik also was a recipient of the Sportsmanship award from the Big Ten Conference, which recognizes players who excel both on and off the court. The team saw success not only on the court but in the classroom as well. The squad recieved a NCAA Public Recognition Award for earning Academic Progress Rate scores in the top 10 percent nationally. The spring 2016 season was highlighted with a stretch of four Big Ten Conference wins in five matches with wins over Wisconsin, Rutgers, Nebraska and Iowa. On April 14, 2016 Kim Surin was named Highmark StudentAthlete of the week for her performance the previous week at #1 singles and #1 doubles for Penn State. Katherine Whiteaway was awarded the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr., Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship which takes into account a player’s tennis accomplishments, scholastic achievement and extracurricular endeavors. Just as Arthur Ashe was a great player and humanitarian, this award (which dates to 1984) recognizes players who excelled on and off the court during their collegiate careers. Sportsmanship, leadership and character are also important criteria. The 2016 Women’s Tennis Program competed in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time in program history. Kim Surin wrapped up the season with Big Ten All-Conference honors for her outstanding play in the spring conference season.

In the 2015 spring season, Cagle led the team to finish 4th in the Big Ten Conference, which was a first for the women’s tennis program. The team fell in a closely contested match during the Big Ten Championship semi finals to the eventual champ of the conference, Michigan. Cagle coached the previously unranked team to result in PENN STATE’S ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS

Of the 21 Spring 2015 opponents lead under Cagle, 18 of which were ranked at some point during the spring season. Duo, Victoria Kisialeva and Dasha Sapogova, were ranked as high as No. 34 in the country in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Doubles rankings. Cagle’s first season as Head Coach of the women’s tennis program was no easy test as the team battled their way around injuries throughout the duration of the spring.Starting freshman at the top two spots in singles for the majority of the dual season, Cagle led Dasha Sapogova to All-Big Ten Second Team honors after winning 15 matches despite only competing in the spring. The 15 wins are the most by a freshman since Lauren Holzberg had 16 in 2006. Cagle coached the Nittany Lions to their first win over Nebraska in program history when the team rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to knock of the Huskers 4-3, with Sapogova taking the clinching match at No. 1 singles in three sets.The Nittany Lions got off to a quick start under the tutelage of Cagle winning their first three matches of the season over a two-day span. His first conference win came against Wisconsin at home when Katherine Whiteaway knocked off Sydney Rider in a grueling three-set match to break the tie and give the Nittany Lions a 4-3 victory.Cagle spent three years as the assistant coach to Jeff Zinn’s men’s team, who went 11-14 in his first year at Penn State and saw the duo of Jason Lee and Russell Bader selected to compete in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
HEAD COACH CHRIS CAGLE During his second season with the men’s team, the Nittany Lions finished 8-17. After Cagles third and final season with the mens team, the Nittany Lions held a program high ranking of No. 16 in the nation and finished at No.24. Cagle served one season as a volunteer assistant coach to Zinn at Wake Forest, where he played an active on-court role, helping the Demon Deacons reach the NCAA tournament. In 2011, Wake Forest posted a 14-12 record, notching their11th straight winning season. The Demon Deacons won 10 matches against nationally ranked opponents, including a 4-0 win over No. 30 Wisconsin to open the season and a 4-0 victory against No. 46 Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Before joining the Demon Deacons, Cagle established himself as one of the top junior tennis coaches, coaching players to 10 national junior titles. He has also coached players in all four Junior Grand Slams, and twice coached a player in the main draw of a Grand Slam. In addition, Cagle has coached and trained female players that have won NCAA Singles, Doubles and Team Championships including the MVP of a NCAA Championship team. Cagle, originally from Greensboro, N.C., played as a member of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program from 1989-1993. He was the first two-time captain in North Carolina-Wilmington men’s tennis program history. In 2009, he reached the No. 1 ranking in United States men’s 30s singles competition. Cagle became the chairman for Junior Competition for North Carolina Tennis, served on the Southern Tennis Junior Competition Board, and the Winston-Salem Tennis, Inc. Board. He was the tournament director for the 2010 Boys’ 12 and Under National Clay Court Clay Court Championships. In 2010, Cagle received the Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award from North Carolina Tennis for his contributions to junior tennis. From 2004-06, Cagle served on the Cystic Fibrosis Tennis Auction Ball Committee. In 2006, he took the Co-Chair position for the auction ball, which raised over $100,000 to fight Cystic Fibrosis that year. Cagle resides in State College with his wife, Maria, and their 15-year-old son, Drew.

PLAYER PROFILES ASSISTANT COACH MIKE FENWICK Michael

Mike Fenwick is in his eighth season as an assistant coach. Fenwick came to Happy Valley after spending the 2009-10 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Baylor men’s tennis team. In the Spring 2014 season, Fenwick assisted in leading the team to an overall #47 rank in the country. Fenwick also assisted in leading the women’s team to be ranked 4th in the big ten regular season, which was a first for the Penn State women’s tennis program. Throughout four seasons Fenwick has helped coach Penn State to some of their best seasons in program history. During the 20122013 season, Fenwick helped lead the Nittany Lions to their best season since 2000-2001 when they made the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions totaled a 14-8 record including victories over 10 teams in the Final ITA Team Poll. Fenwick was also named the ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013 during his third year with the program.
Bears to a No. 7 ranking in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll with a 24-7 record. The Bears also landed two singles players and three doubles teams in the national rankings. Additionally, Fenwick taught tennis classes for the health, human performance and recreation department at Baylor and served as an instructor at the Waco Regional Tennis Center. Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Fenwick spent four years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Western Illinois. He helped guide the Leathernecks to the Summit League regular-season title in 2008, the program’s first regular-season conference title. Fenwick also had a hand in producing a MidCon Men’s Newcomer of the Year, a Mid-Con Men’s Player of the Year and 10 men’s and women’s all-conference selections while in Macomb. The WIU men also claimed the 2006 Mid-Con Tournament title and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 2006. Fenwick graduated from Western Illinois University in 2006 with a degree in business management. He also earned his master’s degree from WIU in recreation, park and tourism administration in 2009. Fenwick now lives in State College with his wife Sei Hee Hwang.
The Nittany Lions started the season with 10 straight victories and had two players win postseason conference awards. Petra Januskova received her third straight All-Big Ten First Team Award and Jacqueline Zuhse was a Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Fenwick played a pivotal role in coaching Januskova and Chelsea Utting into one of the top pairs in the nation. The duo knocked off five nationally ranked pairs en route to the NCAA Doubles Tournament and became only the third Nittany Lions pair in program history make the tournament. During the fall, Fenwick coached Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting to one of the most successful fall seasons in team history, seeing them compete in two invite-only tournaments. Utting led the way in the win over Indiana, which helped to reach a program high rank of No. 30. Januskova and Utting competed in the ITA/ Riviera All-American Championships and Januskova competed in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships featuring the top 32 players in the country. Januskova also took home the Singles Championship at the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament. Fenwick helped coach the Nittany Lions to a twelve-win season in 2011-12 where they knocked off four ranked opponents finishing the season ranked No. 51 in the nation. It was the first time the Nittany Lions found their way into the rankings since 2008. As a volunteer assistant coach, Fenwick helped the Baylor 6

SEASON PREVIEW RETURNING PLAYERS The Penn State women’s tennis team returns six players from its 2016-17 roster. This group of returning players is looking to improve upon previous seasons. Top returners include Bennett Dunn, Shannon Hanley and Samantha Smith who respectivley tallied seven, nine and ten match victories last spring. With five new additions to the roster, returners will use this team experience to their advantage in the Spring season.
SPRING PREVIEW The Penn State women’s tennis team is preparing for the spring season after coming off of a competitive fall season. “The fall tournaments and our off-season training will lead into the spring dual match season, which will be a competitive season with many opportunities,” said head coach Chris Cagle. “I am excited to see just what this team can do in the 2018 spring season.” “This year’s team is mix of experience and youth,” said Cagle. “We have four seniors, two sophomores and five freshman so that mix means we have the experience of the returners that have seen the battles and the energy of the freshmen that want to do great things in college tennis.” That energy from the freshman was put on display in the fall with the doubles duo of Hanna Wikberg and Frederikke Svarre capturing five wins. Gabby O’Gorman had four singles wins in the fall. The experience from the returners was also shown throughout the fall season. Sophomore Shannon Hanley recorded four singles wins. Shannon Hanley and Senior Bennett Dunn had four wins as a doubles duo. The team will look to start strong in the spring using a four match home stand early in the season to its advantage. NEW ADDITIONS Penn State has five new additions to the 2017-18 roster. The freshman include Ines Milosevic, Frederikke Svarre, Olivia Rohrbacher, Hanna Wikberg and Gabby O’Gorman. Ines Milosevic hails from Burlington, Ontario and consistently ranked in the top 10 of Canadian Juniors for singles and doubles. Frederikke Svarre is from Copenhagen Denmark. Svarre was the 2014 and 2015 Danish Junior Champion. Olivia Rohrbacher, from Sandusky, Ohio, was ranked as high as No. 20 in her recruiting class and had a 146-5 record in high school. Hanna Wikberg hails from Stockholm, Sweden and was ranked as one of the top junior players in Sweden. Gabby O’Gorman is from Gunnedah, N.S. Wales, Australia was a three-time New South Wales Pizzey Cup National Champion, as well as captain in 2016.
COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE Looking ahead the Nittany Lions have 11 Big Ten matches and ten non-conference matches. “The Big Ten as a whole is a much improved conference over the past few years,” said head coach Chris Cagle. “Last year you had the NCAA individual singles and doubles winners from the Big Ten. I think the most improved part of the conference is the next tier of teams that are closing the gap.” With strong conference and non conference play the spring season looks to be a challenging schedule. “We know we have a young, talented team and we know we must improve each day to reach the goals we discussed as a team going into the year,” said Cagle. The team will travel to the United States Naval Academy in Anapolis, Md. for their first road matchup of the season on Janurary 14. GoPSUsports.com • PENN STATE 2017-18

2017 FALL: Appeared in three tournaments, seeing six singles matches and five doubles matches. Posted a winning doubles record, going 3-2 overall. Picked up doubles wins with two different partners including Hanna Wikberg and Gabby O’Gorman. Had two singles wins.
2016-17 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Hanley recorded 36 singles matches and 26 doubles matches throughout the season. Had four Big Ten singles wins against Wisconsin, Nebraska, Maryland and Purdue. Had three Big Ten doubles wins against Minnesota, Iowa and Purdue.
2016-17 SPRING SEASON- FRESHMAN: Competed in 33 singles matches and 26 doubles matches on the season. Had six Big Ten singles wins against Rutgers, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Purdue and Indiana. Had six Big Ten doubles wins against Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue and Indiana.
2016 FALL: Made 15 singles and seven doubles appearances. Picked up doubles wins with partner Samantha Smith agaisnt Drexel University and College of William and Mary. Recorded a singles win agianst #8 Montana Moore of #1 Tyler JC 6-2, 6-3. Defeated Christina Makarova of #10 Duke University 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.
2016 FALL: Made 7 doubles appearances and competed in 14 singles matches. Advanced to the Cissie Leary Invitational and defeated Natalia Perry of College of William and Mary 6-1, 6-2. Defeated Rebecca Smaller of #10 Duke University 6-4, 7-5 at the Kitty Harrison Invitational. Possessed a six singles match winning streak from September 30 till October 15.
JUNIOR CAREER: Ranks No. 56 nationally and holds a No. 3 rank in the state of Maryland. Shannon also holds achievements in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Region with a rank of No. 2 in girls 18 singles, two National Open doubles titles, singles and doubles champion of Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) her freshman, junior, and senior years, and was a team member of Washington Posts First team All-Met Spring, 2015. Hanley was undefeated in all four years of her high school play in singles action. She was a member of the National Honors Society, a Student Ambassador member, and a member of her Student Government at her high school.

JUNIOR CAREER: O’Gorman holds achievements as the winner of the Monte Carlo Junior Open in 2014 and runner up at Australian Grass Court Championships at Mildura. O’Gorman was a three-time New South Wales Pizzey Cup National Champion and was a captain in 2016. Additionally, she was a three-time Australian Merit Team member.

JUNIOR CAREER: Ranked as one of the top players in Sweden consistently as a junior player, Wikberg holds achievements as semifinalist in the SALK Open Tournament, Sweden’s biggest tournament, in singles and doubles in 2014, she was a semifinalist in Swedish Nationals in singles and runner-up in doubles.
