LIVES WORTH LEADING速

This is the heart of our experience —to stretch the mind, deepen the faith and elevate the contribution that Gordon students and graduates make to the world around us. These elements illuminate how our individual stories relate to our collective mission—preparing men and women to provide faithful leadership and service for the common good. An investment in Gordon is a choice to lead a life of purpose, worthy of the call God has inspired in each of us.

1

Stretch the mind.

2 1 For 125 years Gordon College has been a place of gospelanchored intellectual and vocational exploration. Here, we courageously pursue hard questions and invite new ideas.

2 Whether you’re in class or venturing into the surrounding area, Gordon’s location offers a perfect vista to experience the beauty, history and rich learning environment of coastal New England.

At Gordon, faith and knowledge are complementary, not contradictory. 3

We stretch the mind through a challenging education that is both broad and deep, one that offers the freedom to ask and explore tough questions, while rooted in a committed Christian framework that informs all we do.

2 1 Our faculty take a hands-on approach to teaching. Dr. Dale Pleticha (physics) helps Ji In So ’17, physics major from China, measure the force of repulsion between two charged objects.

2 Talent and passion swirl together during internships. At Return Design, Sri Lankan native Sandev Handy ’17 designs branding for a global reconciliation nonprofit—a cause he’s passionate about.

4 3 Gordon’s classrooms extend beyond their physical walls. Music and music education majors, like Joel Estes ’16, draw inspiration from Creation as they compose overlooking Coy Pond.

4 Professors are eager to bring students into their scholastic endeavors. Dr. Jennifer Noseworthy (biology) and Margot Lee ’16 tackle integrated pest management research in our greenhouse.

1 1 Plant geneticist and professor of biology Dr. Ming Zheng researches new tools to accelerate crop improvement, with an eye toward fostering sustainable agricultural methods.

3 2 At Gordon’s Center for Balance, Mobility and Wellness, students like Grace Aghan ’17 work alongside kinesiology faculty to assist fitness members with their exercise programs.

3 Communication arts major Bersley Chery ’16 shoots scenes with award-winning filmmaker and assistant professor Scott Thurman in Gordon’s picturesque backyard.

4 Dr. Sharon Galgay Ketcham (theology and Christian ministries) invests in her students during class—and co-hosts a weekly Christian ministries lunch to further connect with them.

1

Deepen the faith.

2 1 The strength of a body of believers is rooted in individual relationships. For Sophie Nicles ’15 and Monica Wong ’15, that’s been built over many cups of tea in their Tavilla Hall apartment.

2 The A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel is the heart of spiritual life. Here, you’ll worship with the Chapel bands and be challenged by dynamic speakers—like Patriots Chaplain Jack Easterby.

Our commitment to faith provides a framework for the transformative pursuit of truth. We deepen the faith by integrating Christian beliefs and practice into all aspects of our educational experience, both on campus and globally. This is a vibrant community of believers, one where faith transforms us collectively and as individuals. 3

4 “People come to Gordon from all over the world,” says Chaplain Tom Haugen. “But they’re here because of a common love for Jesus and a common understanding that God’s Word is truth.”

AMNONI MYERS ’14 Majors: Social work and sociology Minor: Peace and conflict studies Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts Lives in: Washington, D.C. Spends her days: In the nation’s capital, being a voice for the voiceless and advocating for foster youth.

Lives of Service It’s not every day you get a call from the White House. But after Amnoni Myers’ success in an esteemed Capitol Hill internship—the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute’s (CCAI) Foster Youth Internship Program—the White House wanted her. And that’s not the first time Amnoni beat the odds; she’s one of fewer than 10 percent of foster youth who have earned a college degree. As she says, “You can’t let your past dictate your future.” Launching into her CCAI internship immediately after graduation, Amnoni worked with Senator Chuck Grassley (IA) to raise awareness of the challenges facing foster youth. Her story was shared on the U.S. Senate floor. Soon after, her White House internship culminated in an event for foster youth, and Amnoni was tapped to introduce First Lady Michelle Obama. “The support that I had at Gordon was integral,” Amnoni says. From day one, she poured in—becoming an Orientation leader, resident advisor, and local outreach leader. She completed a missions trip to Swaziland, an academic seminar in South Africa, and an off-campus study program in San Francisco. “Gordon was my building place,” she says. “I was able not only to grow in my faith, but I grew intellectually, socially and emotionally.” READ MORE: stories.gordon.edu/amnoni

Lives of Creativity Schuyler Anderson and his brother, Will, grew up skateboarding together. So when they decided to join forces in running the Salemtown Board Co. in Tennessee, it was a natural fit. Plus, says Schuyler, “I could not be using my degree more.” As art director and CFO, he is putting to work his business training and knack for design— and his desire to effect change. The brothers use their handcrafted skateboard business to connect with and provide jobs for young men in their underserved neighborhood—to empower them, Schuyler says, “to live into the potential they already possess.” Why? “Gordon teaches you to care,” he says. “We’re taught this idea of the triple bottom line: Business is about people, profit and the planet. It’s an idea that we’re called to more than just making money.” Salemtown Board Co.’s unique approach has caught national attention—having been featured on CBS and in People magazine. Most recently, the company has partnered with country music star Kip Moore to build a community skatepark nearby. “Gordon taught me not just business facts, but how to problem solve. I walked out of my degree and into a brand new business with the tools to figure it out.” READ MORE: stories.gordon.edu/schuyler
