louis kahn focused on geometry and the allocation of spaces in order to provide a better spatial quality within the building. the house is very clearly divided into two cubes, the private cube and the public cube. when entering from the main entrance, the individual is immediately greeted by a main hallway that determines if he or she enters the private or public area of the dwelling. arranging the served and service spaces so that an enhanced sense of privacy is achieved, louis kahn used the concept of a house within a house. The rotation of the private cube allowed the bedroom to be facing the east, exposing it to the morning sun. the use of recessed windows allow the building to have openings for light and ventilation while maintaing its geometrical integrity. double height spaces and an entrance at the corner allowed one to fully appreciate the geometry of the house. The lower segment of the building is built with a stone foundation which stabilises it on the slope it is situated on. 8

L71 HOUSE OFFICE AT. plans
the l71 house manipulates an originally singular mass to respond to the climatic imperatives. the house splits into several masses to allow for ventilation and light to penetrate the building, making it more sustainable in the tropical climate of bangkok. elongations at certain portions of the building also provide shelter and privacy for the user. the length of the building faces the north, allowing most of the rooms to be well lit throughout the day. there is a clear division between the served and service spaces, ensuring that the served spaces remain private when there are guests over. the house is also sheltered by a double roof, allowing wind to pass through and cool down the building.

MICROCAPSULE
anthropometry and dexterity in modules and dimensions
understanding anthropometric and architectural dimensions. the project aims to develop and demonstrate skills in microspatial and formal composition.

THE PROJECTION BOX A SOLITARY THEATRE client persona a recluse, an introvert who savours solitude. the client takes delight in watching movies and television shows on a big screen. at the same time, he wants to be able to work in a more open environment and enjoy the views that the seaside can provide. the client also wants to be able to walk an adequate amount in his home as this allows him to be more creative at his job, a photographer.

the corridor, the main leg and the stairway. the main construction material of the building would be timber due to its low thermal mass. Locating the house at changi coastal end would expose it to long periods of sunlight. the low thermal mass of wood would help keep the house cool and habitable. the planes of the building are also angled 10 degrees for various reasons. the walls of the main leg are angled to accomodate the visual cone of the user while the roof is angled for stormwater runoff as well as create an aperture for natural lighting and ventilation via stack effect.

ON THE OTHER HAND, THE FULL LENGTH WINDOW ON THE SECOND LEVEL PROVIDES A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE SEA. THE BALCONY AND SEATING GALLERY LOCATED ABOVE THE STAIRWAY ALSO PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR THE CLIENT TO ENJOY THE VIEW A SEASIDE PROVIDES. THE ANGLED WALLS OF THE MAIN LEG ALLOW THE CLIENT TO PROJECT A SCREEN EITHER FROM THE WORKING SPACE OR THE LIVING SPACE. THE CLIENT CAN USE THIS PROJECTION FOR RENDERING OR EDITING PHOTOS OR FOR RECREATIONAL PURPOSES SUCH AS WATCHING A MOVIE.

THE TRIANGULATED CONFIGURATION OF THE LEGS ALLOWS THE CLIENT SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF WALKING SPACE. THE CIRCULATION ROUTE MAKES USE OF BOTH THE INTERIOR AND THE ROOF OF EACH LEG. ANOTHER FEATURE CATERED TOWARDS THE CLIENT WOULD BE THE 20CM X 20CM WINDOWS IN THE LIVING SPACE ALLOWS THE USER TO LOOK OUTDOORS WITH PRIVACY. IT CLOSES HIM OFF TO THE PUBLIC WITHOUT TOTALLY ENCLOSING HIM IN VISUALLY.
the projection box emphasises on the anthropometry of sight and the visual angles the human body is capable of. by placing keyboard and the screen in the same visual cone, this refrains the user from constantly switching between the two positions, reducing the stress on the neck, attaining a more ergonomic position.

THE ARCHITECT’S APPRENTICE understanding scale and orchestrating spatial experience
exploring and analysing the precendents of architectural language. this project encourages the use of thresholds, dimensions and light to satisfy the social and cultural dimensions of architecture.

YUJ
A YOGA STUDIO WITH CONTINUITY client persona an extroverted client who wants to be able to enjoy the openness of the outdoors while being in the comfort of her home. the client is a young yoga instructor who does not like to feel enclosed by a full concrete wall and requests for a more open concept throughout the building. the client also has an affinity for zen as it complements and enhances the yoga experience for her and her clients. other minute requests include having a private reading space as well as being able to watch the television while being in the bath.

the word “yoga” is derived from a sankrit word “yuj”, meaning “to unite”.
1
transposing this unity into architecture, the house contains elements which intends to unite the interior and exterior of the dwelling, creating a sense of openness and vastness. the honesty of the spaces is consistent throughout the building. the only wall on the second floor is in between the bedroom and the washroom. glass sliding doors on both levels facing the courtyard also gives the user an elongated view of the courtyard and the water feature.

the water element represents the flow and calmness in yoga. the elevated platform in the courtyard acts as a yoga mat for the owner and her clients. with the garden on the left and the courtyard on the right, the bridge creates a long pathway for the user to dwell in and appreciate nature.
the roof is design to respond appropriately to the tropical and site context. the tiled roof respects and conserve the tradition and culture of the shophouse typology. the pitched roof continues the rhythm of the row of shophouses as well. the staggering of the roof allows for natural lighting and ventilation to permeate the building.
continuity on different scales yuj aims to express the unity between the interior and the exterior on two scales ; between the building and the site as well as the indoor and outdoor areas within the dwelling itself. the side elevation of the building displays a staggered series of planes and columns. different from the usual singular wall, the staggered planes opens up the building while maintaining a degree of privacy. this concept is adopted by the vertical louvers on the perimeter of the dwelling as well. the vertical louvers are backed by a glass curtain wall to keep out the unwanted elements such as wind and litter. the garden beside the courtyard also helps to blur the definition between the domestic and public spaces.
23
design development expressing and attaining unity in architectural language the initial stages of the design involved more curved structures to mimic the continuity in yoga. however, the curvature of the roof and walls led to overcomplication of the entire dwelling and it was felt that a more simple elegant solution would be better at personifying the theme of zen. what stayed constant throughout the designs were the use of columns as screens between the inner and outer regions of the building. there was also a consistent layering of planes to aid in the conceptualisation of continuity. as the design developed, the later drafts became simpler and more sensitive to the site as well as the concept of the project. the spatial organisation of the interior was also refined and improved to allow a better living experience within the dwelling.
