Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. “Basically, stay as close to God as fish are to water. Treat each person as you want to be treated and accept your crosses as challenges, and remain dedicated to your ideals.” -Father Bede Hines be seen taking the teams to practice at local high schools, perfecting their craft. When DeGol Field was constructed early in the decade, and plans to build an all-weather track surrounding the field were announced, it was agreed that the man who worked so tirelessly to build the track & field program at Saint Francis should be honored. On July 29, 2006, the Father Bede Hines Track was dedicated in a special ceremony, with Father Bede and a large gathering there to commemorate the occasion. Father Bede Hines’ name will continue to live on at Saint Francis University not just in the track that bears his name, nor simply in the annual cross country and track and field events hosted by the track & field and cross country teams. No, Father Bede’s memory will live on and thrive in the example he set not just to his Fransiscan brothers, but the entire University community. WordS For Father Bede

“Being a runner and a cross country/track & field coach - when i think of Saint Francis university - i think of Father Bede and how he epitomized Saint Francis university, it's mission and ideals.” - Debbie (White) Utesch, MBA Saint Francis ‘00 Head Women’s Cross Country Coach - Lehigh On December 1, 2010, Saint Francis University lost one of its greatest benefactors and friends. Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. passed away at Saint Francis Friary at the age of 92, and will always be remembered as one of Saint Francis’s most recognizable and loved individuals.

"don't say it; do it." one of my favorite quotes from my old coach/professor. - Greg Heroux '78 “rest in peace Fr. Bede. My experiences of running track under his guidance for just one year are among my most vivid and treasured memories of my years at Saint Francis.” - Larry Woda '66

Father Bede first came to serve on the faculty at Saint Francis University in 1947 before stints at Saint Francis Seminary and Saint Thomas More High School. He returned to Loretto In 1955 and taught there until his retirement in 1982. Along the way, Father Bede touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and fellow clergymen with his humility, grace, and good humor.

“heaven has a new track coach. i was fortunate to know Fr. Bede as a member of the SFc track club in the early seventies. although we were only a club team, he entered us in some very prestigious meets. one time we competed at the pitt relays. he entered me in the 35lb weight throw even though i had only thrown it a few times. i found myself competing against some of the best in the country but Fr. Bede just said, "do your best." he was a true inspiration. - Joe Jacobi ‘74

Those that knew him best also know that Father Bede was a proponent of physical fitness throughout his entire life. Seeking to live his favorite motto of “Excelsior” (aim higher, or to strive for greater excellence), Father Bede was an avid runner, skier, cyclist, and swimmer. In 2000, Father Bede earned three gold medals in the masters swimming division at the Keystone Games at the age of 82; in 1977, he climbed Mount Whitney in California at the age of 79, the oldest person to achieve that feat. Despite being confined to a wheelchair late in life, Father Bede could still be seen lifting weights and exercising.

“i believe all of his track and cross country runners loved the man. there is no need to exaggerate any Fr. Bede stories as they are all original legends. Who could ever forget having to run backwards, or being called upon to recite a poem while following him across campus?” - Bob Weet ‘66

One other group that has felt the indelible touch of Father Bede is the Saint Francis track & field and cross country program, teams that Father Bede coached for 34 years. For the entirety of his career, Father Bede’s teams never had a home track to call their own; he would

Gordon Thomson heAD CoACh | seConD seAson Gordon Thomson enters his 23rd year as a head coach in 2010-11, his second as the head coach of the Saint Francis Red Flash men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. The veteran coach returns an experienced squad of athletes for the upcoming seasons; all told, Thomson loses just seven women from the 200910 squad (four of whom competed in both cross country and track & field) and three men (one of whom competed in both cross country and track & field). In 2009, the Red Flash women’s cross country team took fourth in the NEC Cross Country Championships, where a symbolic passing of the torch occurred when sophomore Sarah Grossi earned her first career All-NEC honor by finishing 10th. At the same time, decorated senior Anna Hoffman earned her fourth and final All-NEC honor, leaving Saint Francis as one of its finest cross country competitors.

alma Mater . . . .B.S.Florida ‘82; M.S. Florida ‘87

Thomson’s women’s track & field squads took fifth in both the NEC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field championships on the strength of perhaps the best thrower in the conference. Christin Bridge continued her ascension in not just the conference but the NCAA by winning three individual conference championships (Indoor & Outdoor Shot Put, Discus). Bridge competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships - First Round in Greensboro, N.C. and is expected to compete near the top of the NEC again in 201011. Grossi would put her mark on the track & field season as well, winning her first individual championship with a victory in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Championships. Thomson came to Loretto with extensive experience coaching on the national and international levels, after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with the Clemson University men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. He had spent the previous seven years as head coach of the DePaul men’s and women’s programs, and 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago. “Gordon Thomson brings an outstanding background as a coach, teacher and leader in cross country and track & field,” Krimmel said. “Coach Thomson has made a positive impact on the students and universities he has served during his coaching career. Our student-athletes and staff are excited to welcome Gordon to the Saint Francis family, and look forward to his dynamic leadership as our coach.” While at Clemson, Thomson worked exclusively with the women’s distance program for his first two years. During his third season, he was in charge of coaching all phases of the Tiger cross country program for both the men and women. Thomson coached both of Clemson’s cross country teams to Top-10 finishes at NCAA Southeast Regionals in 2008, while both teams earned All-Academic honors. Thomson also recruited and coached Jenna Baker to All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-Region honors. She became the first Tiger runner to earn All-Region honors since 1998. Prior to becoming an assistant at Clemson, Thomson’s tenure at DePaul produced 18 student-athletes who won Conference USA Championships, and four student-athletes who earned NCAA All-America honors. In 2002, he coached Erin Moffett to the first-ever women’s cross country All-America honor at DePaul. She went on to earn AllRegion honors in 2001. Thomson also coached three-time All-American Carey Ryan in the men’s hammer throw. Ryan finished third at NCAA’s in the hammer throw. During 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson was in charge of both the men’s and women’s programs. He was a 10-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League) Coach-of-the-Year, while his men’s distance athletes earned nine All-America awards. He coached the school’s first female All-American in 1992 in the outdoor 10,000 meter run. 13

During his tenure at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson coached two members of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in Eddie Slowikowski and Jim Westphal. Slowikowski was a three-time NCAA All-American and broke the four-minute mark in the mile run. He was a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the 1500m. Westphal was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2006 after a highly decorated career under Thomson’s guidance. He earned four All-America honors and holds seven school records. Westphal went on to become a three-time member of the World Cross Country Championships team, and he was also a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in 1996. Thomson coached Marc Burns, who was an All-American in 1989 and 1990 and holds school records in the 4x800m relay (indoor) and distance medley relay, 4x1500m relay, and 4x1600m relay (outdoor). Burns went on to coach the Loyola-Chicago program and is now the head track & field and cross country coach at Bradley. Prior to his head coach experience, Thomson served a total of three years as an assistant coach with the Northwestern University and University of Florda women’s track and field programs. In one season at Northwestern, he coached sprints, hurdles and throwing events, as well as sprints and relays for the Wildcat football athletes. Several athletes scored at the Big Ten Championships. Before joining Northwestern, Thomson oversaw recruiting and coaching for all distance events in two years at Florida. He oversaw an NCAA-record performance in the 10,000m by Beth Farmer in 32 minutes, 49.1 seconds. Florida finished seventh at the 1981 AIAW Cross Country Championship. While coaching for the Gators, Thomson coached 1988 Olympian Shelly Steely, and present Villanova head coach Gina Proccacio. Thomson has significant experience coaching with USA Track & Field. He spent one week in late July of 2009 in Chula Vista, Calif., where he was the lead instructor for the Emerging Elites Coaching Summit, sponsored by USA Track & Field, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. In July of 2004, he was a USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Junior Championships, in Grosseto, Italy. In March 2006, he was the USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Russia. From 1997-2005, Thomson served as USA Track and Field’s men’s Olympic Development Chairman for the 3,000m steeplechase. He was then promoted to Olympic Development Chairman for all distance events from 2005 until stepping down in 2009. Additionally, Thomson was appointed as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships, which were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was at those championships that Thomson displayed his coaching versatility. In overseeing the throwers, he coached four athletes to gold medal performances. Thomson also served as President of the United States Cross Country Coaches Assocation from 1998-2000. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Florida in 1982. He also obtained his master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences from Florida in 1987. Thomson wrote his thesis on “Hurdling versus Stepping the Steeplechase Waterjump.” He resides in nearby Ebensburg.

Assistant Coaching staff Tamara burns AssisTAnT CoACh | ThiRD seAson Throws coach Tamara Burns is currently in her third season with the Red Flash, arriving in Loretto upon completing a stellar four-year career at Virginia Tech. Despite her short tenure thus far at Saint Francis, Burns’s athletes have been perhaps the top performers the Red Flash have put out in the field over the last several seasons. Under burns, Christin Bridge has won five individual Northeast Conference championships, including two straight outdoor Shot Put and Discus titles; she is the only Red Flash woman since 1999 to win consecutive championships in two separate events. Burns coached shot putter Lisa Morse to a first-place finish at the 2008 Indoor Championship and Kayla Herron to a win in the weight throw at the same event. More recently, she guided Karl DeWayngaert to victory in the weight throw, helping the men’s team win the 2009 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship. In two years, Burns has led field athletes to 47 top-ten finishes at the NEC Championships.

While competing for the Hokies, Burns earned both All-American and All-Atlantic Coast Conference Honors for her performances in the weight and hammer throws in 2005 and 2006. In 2006, she claimed the weight throw title at the ACC Indoor Championships and went on to win the hammer throw at the 2007 ACC Outdoor championships. Burns’ performances helped the Hokies to capture the 2007 Indoor and Outdoor ACC Championships.

Rondell Ruff AssisTAnT CoACh | seConD seAson Ruff is set to enter his second season as an assistant coach with the Red Flash cross country and track & field teams, bringing passion and leadership to the Red Flash squad. Ruff’s diverse array of knowledge has allowed him to work equally well with athletes competing in distance, long sprints, and jumps. Under Ruff, Chris Behre added two more NEC championships to the mantle, taking home wins in the 1500m and the Mile. Sarah Grossi reached a pair of firsts in her career, getting named to the All-NEC cross country team in the fall and winning her first NEC championship in the 3000m Steeplechase in the spring. Also of note was freshman Alexis Hurd, who took sixth in the indoor 200m and came in eighth in the outdoor 100m at the NEC Championships. Ruff is a 2006 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Language, Science & Arts. Ruff was also a decorated member of the Wolverine track and field team, capturing both First-Team All-Big Ten honors and All-American honors. Jorden Davis AssisTAnT CoACh | seConD seAson Davis enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Red Flash after completing a stellar four-year career as a sprinter on the track & field team. His time as a Red Flash student-athlete gives him a unique perspective and will allow him a special ability to relate to his student athletes. Davis worked primarily with the Red Flash sprinters, trying to develop the young corps into a challenger in the talented Northeast Conference. Under Davis in 2010, Will Velez rebounded from a serious knee injury in 2009 to post the third-fastest 100m time in Saint Francis history, qualifying for the IC4A championships with a 10.84 that ranked sixth at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Track & Field championship. Also, Alexis Hurd scored in the indoor 200m and 400m at the 2009-10 NEC Indoor championships, as well as the outdoor 100m at the 2010 NEC Outdoor championships, and Christy Staily took fifth in the 400m Hurdles at the 2010 NEC Outdoor championships. Davis was an outstanding competitor while a member of the track and field team, setting seven team records in his time as a student athlete. Davis holds records in three indoor events (200m, 300m and 400m) and ranks second in Saint Francis history in the outdoor 200m and 400m. Davis was also a member of the school-record breaking indoor 4x400m relay team. Cross Country season Wrap-up The 2010 Saint Francis men’s cross country team entered the season with a considerable amount of attention, as the veteran-laden squad was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason and received a pair of first-place votes in the process. Facing a challenging prechampionship schedule that included trips to Chicago and Delaware, the Red Flash men hoped to live up to the hype. The result was a second place finish at the 2010 NEC Championship, where the Flash finished behind just the host institution Central Connecticut State Blue Devils. While disappointed that his team was not able to bring home the gold, Saint Francis head coach Gordon Thomson said his team’s performance was still commendable, recording their highest placing since the 2005 season. “"They should be proud of themselves," said Thomson. "They ran to win a team championship. As a whole, this is a big step forward for the University. It shows our team is heading in the right direction." Making his final appearance in a Northeast Conference championship was senior tim Wertner, who earned his third consecutive All-NEC honor by taking seventh overall at the meet. Directly behind Wertner was chris Mills, who finished one spot out of All-NEC consideration in 2009 but jumped out to eighth overall in 2010. Mills, a three-time Northeast Conference champion in the distance events in Outdoor Track & Field, finally broke through in

WeRTneR

cross country and will be one of Thomson’s top harriers in 2011. New to the party for the Flash were a pair of sophomores; Shaun Foley and Sean kirby were the third and fourth AllNEC runners for the Flash in 2010, giving Saint Francis its most All-NEC selections since their 2005 conference championships. Foley made what was described as a “quantum leap” by Thomson, and Kirby’s success comes on the heels of a surprise secondplace finish in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Track & Field championships. While the Red Flash took second at the meet, they still managed to bring home some additional hardware from New Britain. Freshman chris Fischer, a twotime NEC Rookie of the Week over the course of the season, finished 16th overall and earned NEC Freshman of the Year as the top first-year finisher at the meet. Beyond just the 2010 NEC championships, the season saw the Red Flash earn numerous accolades as both a team and as individuals. After competing at the nationally renowned Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational (hosted by Loyola-Chicago, where Thomson spent the first 15 years of his head coaching career), the Flash cracked the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings at #15. Saint Francis defeated several teams that week that were included in the USTFCCCA’s Midwest Regional rankings. Two weeks later, the Flash jumped up to #13 in the region on the heels of a strong performance at the Delaware Blue & Gold Meet; Saint Francis came in second to just the hosting Delaware Blue Hens, who ranked 11th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Finally, after their second place performance at the NEC Championships, the Flash ended up #11th in the region. From an individual standpoint, Saint Francis featured the most accolades for 19

any team in the Northeast Conference. The Red Flash combined for five NEC Athlete or Rookie of the Week awards, something that no other school could match. All told, the Flash earned three Rookie awards, two for Chris Fischer and one for Jake portock, and Athlete of the Week awards for both Chris Mills and Tim Wertner. With 2010 in K. Gibson the rearview mirror, Thomson and the Red Flash will now set their sights on the 2010-11 track & field season, but not without keeping their sights on the 2011 cross country season. Featuring seniors like Mills, kyle gibson, adam Mengel, and Zach Burns, the Red Flash hope that the veterans of the squad will combine with the improved youth to bring the Red and White back to the top of the podium in the Northeast Conference.

Mills

Track & Field season outlook Saint Francis men’s track & field coach Gordon Thomson enters the 201011 track and field seasons with the hope that an experienced crop of upperclassmen can mentor his talented newcomers and help the Red Flash return to the top of the Northeast Conference. “We brought in five men this season that can help us right away in the distance and sprints events,” said Thomson. “In addition [head football coach] Chris Villarrial is very pro-track and field. We hope to partner with him to bring in well-rounded athletes that wish to compete in both football and track & field.” DisTAnCe The most experienced third of the roster is the distance corps, which returns its entire squad from the 2009-10 season. A group heavy with upperclassmen, Thomson will turn to a pair of multiple-time Northeast Conference champions as his distance horses for the season. Graduate student chris Behre and junior chris Mills have a combined nine NEC individual titles between the two of them, and will be challengers for more in both middle- and longdistance events, respectively. “Behre’s maturity FARMeR level is very high; he got his bachelor’s degree in just three years and will have his master’s degree by season’s end,” said Thomson. “With his maturity and experience, we’re looking for him to step up and perform well, all the way to the IC4A’s and NCAA First Round.” Thomson said that Mills is a true “track racer,” with an innate ability to set his pace and maintain rhythm over a flat surface that makes him difficult to beat in long races. “Mills did a marvelous job improving in cross country this past season, getting used to uphills, downhills, turns, and other things that break rhythm,” said Thomson.

“That will only help his track career. He loves a flat, even surface and really thrives on it.” According to Thomson, other returning runners to watch include Sean kirby, who as a freshman in 2009-10 took second in the NEC in the 3000m Steeplechase; tim Wertner, a senior who is a multiple-time All-NEC performer in cross country and whom Thomson feels is an athlete “most capable of translating that to track success;” Shaun Foley, whom Thomson said “made a quantum leap” in cross country competition in 2010; kyle gibson, who scored at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Championships in the 1500m and “has range from the Mile on up,” according to Thomson; and Brent digiorgio, who scored at the 2009-10 NEC Indoor Championships in the unseeded heat of the 3000m. Two freshman expected to make an immediate impact are chris Fischer and nick gibson (brother of Kyle). Fischer earned NEC Rookie of the Year status in the 2010 cross country season, and Nick Gibson expects to step right in as one of the Red Flash’s dangerous middistance runners. sPRinTs The sprint squad will be dominated in 2010-11 by youth, as no senior competitors remain after the graduation of converted jumper Will Velez in 2010. Thomson will rely heavily on junior everette Farmer and sophomore issa connell to improve this season to give the Red Flash a boost in the sprints. 20

“Those two men have been our bread and butter on the short sprints and relays,” said Thomson. “They’ve come into this season with a great sense of work ethic that is going to pay off.” Connell is a naturally-gifter tall sprinter that holds the sixth-best performance in school history in the 100m with an 11.00 in 2010, as well as the sixth-best perbooKhAMeR formance in school history in the 60m with a 7.07. Farmer was beset by injuries late in the 2010 outdoor season, but remained a key member of the short sprint relays. In terms of freshman, Thomson hopes that four newcomers will be able to step up and become productive quickly. In particular, daniel drozdowsky scored at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet in the 400m, and cedric Forbes qualified for the New York state championship meet in the hurdles as a student at Corning H.S. Thomson also indicated that Matt giza and logan Zimmerman would be in the mix in the sprints. FielD The returning crop in the field will be very thin for the Red Flash, with just local product terry Bookhamer as a returning scorer. Bookhamer scored in the Weight Throw at the 2009-10 NEC Indoor Championships and just missed out on scoring in the Hammer Throw at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Championships. “Terry has been training well in the offseason, and we expect him to improve in the coming seasons,” said Thomson. Thomson also hopes that several members of the Saint Francis football team will be able to step in and provide depth in the throws.

The northeast Conference

W

hen the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To mark the NEC’s 30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the Conference will proudly celebrate its heritage as its builds toward a promising future. The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball). Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. 31

A.J. Suravicz (above) is one of only six All-Americans in Saint Francis athletics history; coincidentally, three of those six men (Suravicz, Ryan Sheehan, and Brian Sell) competed on the track & field team. However, Sell was an All-American in cross country, not track & field. 400 Meters

The stokes Club

Give a Gift, Build a Legacy... Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those who have generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club. The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round. With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improved every day working conditions within the athletic department. We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward and take our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athletics is very bright because you care about our student-athletes. ME MBERSH IP
