Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. “Basically, stay as close to God as fish are to water. Treat each person as you want to be treated and accept your crosses as challenges, and remain dedicated to your ideals.” -Father Bede Hines be seen taking the teams to practice at local high schools, perfecting their craft. When DeGol Field was constructed early in the decade, and plans to build an all-weather track surrounding the field were announced, it was agreed that the man who worked so tirelessly to build the track & field program at Saint Francis should be honored. On July 29, 2006, the Father Bede Hines Track was dedicated in a special ceremony, with Father Bede and a large gathering there to commemorate the occasion. Father Bede Hines’ name will continue to live on at Saint Francis University not just in the track that bears his name, nor simply in the annual cross country and track and field events hosted by the track & field and cross country teams. No, Father Bede’s memory will live on and thrive in the example he set not just to his Fransiscan brothers, but the entire University community. WordS For FAtHer bede
“being a runner and a cross country/track & field coach - when i think of Saint Francis university - i think of Father bede and how he epitomized Saint Francis university, it's mission and ideals.” - Debbie (White) Utesch, MBA Saint Francis ‘00 Head Women’s Cross Country Coach - Lehigh On December 1, 2010, Saint Francis University lost one of its greatest benefactors and friends. Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. passed away at Saint Francis Friary at the age of 92, and will always be remembered as one of Saint Francis’s most recognizable and loved individuals.
"don't say it; do it." one of my favorite quotes from my old coach/professor. - Greg Heroux '78 “rest in peace Fr. bede. my experiences of running track under his guidance for just one year are among my most vivid and treasured memories of my years at Saint Francis.” - Larry Woda '66
Father Bede first came to serve on the faculty at Saint Francis University in 1947 before stints at Saint Francis Seminary and Saint Thomas More High School. He returned to Loretto In 1955 and taught there until his retirement in 1982. Along the way, Father Bede touched the lives of countless students, faculty, and fellow clergymen with his humility, grace, and good humor.
“Heaven has a new track coach. i was fortunate to know Fr. bede as a member of the SFc track club in the early seventies. Although we were only a club team, he entered us in some very prestigious meets. one time we competed at the pitt relays. He entered me in the 35lb weight throw even though i had only thrown it a few times. i found myself competing against some of the best in the country but Fr. bede just said, "do your best." He was a true inspiration. - Joe Jacobi ‘74
Those that knew him best also know that Father Bede was a proponent of physical fitness throughout his entire life. Seeking to live his favorite motto of “Excelsior” (aim higher, or to strive for greater excellence), Father Bede was an avid runner, skier, cyclist, and swimmer. In 2000, Father Bede earned three gold medals in the masters swimming division at the Keystone Games at the age of 82; in 1977, he climbed Mount Whitney in California at the age of 79, the oldest person to achieve that feat. Despite being confined to a wheelchair late in life, Father Bede could still be seen lifting weights and exercising.
“i believe all of his track and cross country runners loved the man. there is no need to exaggerate any Fr. bede stories as they are all original legends. Who could ever forget having to run backwards, or being called upon to recite a poem while following him across campus?” - Bob Weet ‘66
One other group that has felt the indelible touch of Father Bede is the Saint Francis track & field and cross country program, teams that Father Bede coached for 34 years. For the entirety of his career, Father Bede’s teams never had a home track to call their own; he would

Gordon Thomson heAD CoACh | seConD seAson Gordon Thomson enters his 23rd year as a head coach in 2010-11, his second as the head coach of the Saint Francis Red Flash men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams. The veteran coach returns an experienced squad of athletes for the upcoming seasons; all told, Thomson loses just seven women from the 200910 squad (four of whom competed in both cross country and track & field) and three men (one of whom competed in both cross country and track & field). In 2009, the Red Flash women’s cross country team took fourth in the NEC Cross Country Championships, where a symbolic passing of the torch occurred when sophomore Sarah Grossi earned her first career All-NEC honor by finishing 10th. At the same time, decorated senior Anna Hoffman earned her fourth and final All-NEC honor, leaving Saint Francis as one of its finest cross country competitors.
Alma mater . . . .B.S.Florida ‘82; M.S. Florida ‘87
Thomson’s women’s track & field squads took fifth in both the NEC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field championships on the strength of perhaps the best thrower in the conference. Christin Bridge continued her ascension in not just the conference but the NCAA by winning three individual conference championships (Indoor & Outdoor Shot Put, Discus). Bridge competed at the 2010 NCAA Championships - First Round in Greensboro, N.C. and is expected to compete near the top of the NEC again in 201011. Grossi would put her mark on the track & field season as well, winning her first individual championship with a victory in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Championships. Thomson came to Loretto with extensive experience coaching on the national and international levels, after spending three seasons as an assistant coach with the Clemson University men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs. He had spent the previous seven years as head coach of the DePaul men’s and women’s programs, and 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago. “Gordon Thomson brings an outstanding background as a coach, teacher and leader in cross country and track & field,” Krimmel said. “Coach Thomson has made a positive impact on the students and universities he has served during his coaching career. Our student-athletes and staff are excited to welcome Gordon to the Saint Francis family, and look forward to his dynamic leadership as our coach.” While at Clemson, Thomson worked exclusively with the women’s distance program for his first two years. During his third season, he was in charge of coaching all phases of the Tiger cross country program for both the men and women. Thomson coached both of Clemson’s cross country teams to Top-10 finishes at NCAA Southeast Regionals in 2008, while both teams earned All-Academic honors. Thomson also recruited and coached Jenna Baker to All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-Region honors. She became the first Tiger runner to earn All-Region honors since 1998. Prior to becoming an assistant at Clemson, Thomson’s tenure at DePaul produced 18 student-athletes who won Conference USA Championships, and four student-athletes who earned NCAA All-America honors. In 2002, he coached Erin Moffett to the first-ever women’s cross country All-America honor at DePaul. She went on to earn AllRegion honors in 2001. Thomson also coached three-time All-American Carey Ryan in the men’s hammer throw. Ryan finished third at NCAA’s in the hammer throw. During 15 seasons as head coach at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson was in charge of both the men’s and women’s programs. He was a 10-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now the Horizon League) Coach-of-the-Year, while his men’s distance athletes earned nine All-America awards. He coached the school’s first female All-American in 1992 in the outdoor 10,000 meter run. 13
During his tenure at Loyola-Chicago, Thomson coached two members of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in Eddie Slowikowski and Jim Westphal. Slowikowski was a three-time NCAA All-American and broke the four-minute mark in the mile run. He was a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the 1500m. Westphal was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2006 after a highly decorated career under Thomson’s guidance. He earned four All-America honors and holds seven school records. Westphal went on to become a three-time member of the World Cross Country Championships team, and he was also a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier in 1996. Thomson coached Marc Burns, who was an All-American in 1989 and 1990 and holds school records in the 4x800m relay (indoor) and distance medley relay, 4x1500m relay, and 4x1600m relay (outdoor). Burns went on to coach the LoyolaChicago program and is now the head track & field and cross country coach at Bradley. Prior to his head coach experience, Thomson served a total of three years as an assistant coach with the Northwestern University and University of Florda women’s track and field programs. In one season at Northwestern, he coached sprints, hurdles and throwing events, as well as sprints and relays for the Wildcat football athletes. Several athletes scored at the Big Ten Championships. Before joining Northwestern, Thomson oversaw recruiting and coaching for all distance events in two years at Florida. He oversaw an NCAA-record performance in the 10,000m by Beth Farmer in 32 minutes, 49.1 seconds. Florida finished seventh at the 1981 AIAW Cross Country Championship. While coaching for the Gators, Thomson coached 1988 Olympian Shelly Steely, and present Villanova head coach Gina Proccacio. Thomson has significant experience coaching with USA Track & Field. He spent one week in late July of 2009 in Chula Vista, Calif., where he was the lead instructor for the Emerging Elites Coaching Summit, sponsored by USA Track & Field, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. In July of 2004, he was a USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Junior Championships, in Grosseto, Italy. In March 2006, he was the USA men’s assistant coach (distance events) at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Russia. From 1997-2005, Thomson served as USA Track and Field’s men’s Olympic Development Chairman for the 3,000m steeplechase. He was then promoted to Olympic Development Chairman for all distance events from 2005 until stepping down in 2009. Additionally, Thomson was appointed as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2007 Pan American Junior Championships, which were held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It was at those championships that Thomson displayed his coaching versatility. In overseeing the throwers, he coached four athletes to gold medal performances. Thomson also served as President of the United States Cross Country Coaches Assocation from 1998-2000. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Florida in 1982. He also obtained his master’s degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences from Florida in 1987. Thomson wrote his thesis on “Hurdling versus Stepping the Steeplechase Waterjump.” He resides in nearby Ebensburg.

Despite her short tenure thus far at Saint Francis, Burns’s athletes have been perhaps the top performers the Red Flash have put out in the field over the last several seasons. Under Burns, Christin Bridge has won five individual Northeast Conference championships, including two straight outdoor Shot Put and Discus titles; she is the only Red Flash woman since 1999 to win consecutive championships in two separate events. Burns coached shot putter Lisa Morse to a first-place finish at the 2008 Indoor Championship and Kayla Herron to a win in the weight throw at the same event. More recently, she guided Karl DeWayngaert to victory in the weight throw, helping the men’s team win the 2009 Northeast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship. In two years, Burns has led field athletes to 47 top-ten finishes at the NEC Championships.

Cross Country season Wrap-up The Saint Francis women’s cross country team had something of a passing of the torch in 2009, as four-time All-NEC honoree Anna Hoffman raced in her final NEC cross country championship; meanwhile, sophomore Sarah grossi passed Hoffman late in the race to earn her first All-NEC honor.
“Our women had a positive, strong approach to the race, and ran very hard and very well,” said Thomson. “They all showed what they were made of.”
With that shift, it became clear that the 2010 season would be a transition year for the Red Flash women; with an abundance of youth and a strong junior class, Saint Francis Red Flash head coach Gordon Thomson saw his team grow right before his eyes. Grossi continued to shine for the Red Flash, while key veterans like senior dani Williams and junior katie cianci made marked improvements over the course of the season.
Still, though, a group of runners stepped to the forefront for Thomson. Grossi finished just shy of earning her second consecutive All-NEC honor, and a trio comprised of two freshmen and one sophomore finished in a strong pack immediately after.
However, adversity struck at quite possibly the most inopportune time for the Red Flash; just two days before the 2010 NEC Cross Country championships, both Cianci and sophomore Jennifer Haffner both consistently in the top-five for the Flash in 2010 - fell ill. Haffner was completely unable to compete in the championship race, while Cianci was greatly limited by the illness.
CiAnCi
Feleisha Wright took 26th in her first ever NEC championship meet, sophomore rebecca Webster ran what Thomson called, “her best race of the season,” to take 28th overall, and freshman gloria roberts built off her victory in the Collegiate Women’s division at the Father Bede Hines Invitational several weeks previous with a 29th place finish at the NEC championships. “This was a breakout race for them,” said Thomson. “Our freshmen really came through for us.”
GRossi
Though the Red Flash finished sixth overall at the NEC championship, there is reason to believe the team is headed for even better things as a result of their strong body of work in 2010. As stated, freshmen Wright and Roberts showed that they were ready to immediately contribute to the campaign, with Roberts in particular showing some spark; she paced the Collegiate Women’s field at the 2010 Father Bede Hines Invitational. Meanwhile, Wright showed promise when she paced the Red Flash at the Spiked Shoe Invitational early in the season. 19
Meanwhile, an impressive crop of veterans will return for the Flash. While graduating senior Dani Williams will be missed dearly (“She’s very poised and she sees the big picture,” said Thomson. “Those are the hallmarks of a good leader”), the Flash will see the ascendancy of seven women to senior status in 2011, including the likes of Grossi, Cianci, Sarah Frydrych, and Hannah reist. Outside of the senior class, Thomson has a pair of upcoming juniors that may be set to break out in 2011. Jennifer Haffner will look to bounce back from missing the 2010 NEC championships, and her early accomplishments in track & field (scoring in the 800m at both the Indoor and Outdoor championships) indicate that she has the ability to raise her competition level in difficult situations. Meanwhile, as previously stated, Rebecca Webster posted the best performance of her young career at the 2010 championships, and will look to grow further in her training for 2011.
Track & Field season outlook Head coach Gordon Thomson enters his second season with the Red Flash and his twenty-third season as a head coach for track and field, and has been around the block long enough to know that the 2010-11 edition of his squad has the potential to be drastically different than last year’s team, which closed the season ranking fifth in the Northeast Conference in both the outdoor and indoor seasons. “We’re going to be radically different this year,” said Thomson. “We’ve brought in 11 newcomers, and they should all be benefits to the team. Especially the sprints corps; they should be the prime beneficiaries. It’s new look.” DisTAnCe Despite the loss of Anna Hoffman, a seven-time Northeast Conference individual champion in the distance events, Thomson will look to a talented crop of upperclassmen to shoulder the load. Senior Sarah grossi was the 3000m Steeplechase champion at the 2010 NEC Outdoor championships, and was also a scorer for the Flash at the 2009-10 Indoor Championships. In addition, junior katie cianci had a breakout performance in the 2010 cross country season, and according to Thomson is ready to make a leap on the track. “Katie has shown newfound strength
KenDRiCK
and endurance this past cross country season,” said Thomson. Two other scorers from last year’s squad will also return for 2010-11; sophomore Jennifer Haffner scored in both the Indoor and Outdoor 800m at the NEC Championship meets, and senior danielle Williams also scored in the Indoor 800m. The distance newcomers also add credentials to the roster. gloria roberts was a Pennsylvania state runner-up in the 800m and 1600m and “adds automatic scoring capability,” according to Thomson. Classmate Feleisha Wright didn’t have the benefit of running with a high school track team, but was youth runner-up in the 300m in the USATF Youth National championship as part of her club team. sPRinTs The sprints will take on a new look in 2010-11, with a number of new faces set to joing the existing team. However, a number of veterans will continue to produce for Thomson. Leading the pack is junior christy Staily, who finished fifth in conference in the 400m Hurdles at the 2010 NEC Outdoor championships. “Christy has been ‘Miss Steady’ for us, both indoor and outdoor,” said Thomson. “She’s always dependable for a relay leg or stepping up in an individual event.” Thomson also mentions dynamic sophomore Alexis Hurd, “a team person as far as relay legs and versatility.” Hurd was a scorer in the short sprints for the Red Flash in 2009-10, putting up points in the Indoor 200m and the Outdoor 100m; she was also part of the 4x100m team at the 2010 NEC Outdoor Championships, combining with Staily, Sydney king, and Julie morey for a fifth place finish. Youth, though, should serve the Red Flash well in 2010-11. “Newcomers will hopefully change the dynamics of our sprint squad,” said Thomson. mariame conde comes in as a Pennsylvania state champion in the 300m Hurdles. nicole leach joins her fellow freshmen as Pennsylvania All-State athlete in the 400m. tynelle taylor-chase was a finalist in the 400m Hurdles at the Ontario Federation 20
of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship meet. The athlete to highlight is keishana larose, a transfer from Lincoln (Pa.) that will work in the short sprints.
hAFFneR
FielD The star of the field is christin bridge, who enters her senior season coming off a spectacular 2009-2010 season. A twotime NCAA qualifier, Bridge has five Northeast Conference individual championships to her credit and won the Olympic Development East Division of the Shot Put at the 2010 Penn Relays. “She made a solid jump from her sophomore to junior year,” said Thomson, “and I think she’s capable of making another jump into her senior year. She’s a competitor; competition brings out the best in her.” Junior kathryne kendrick also made contributions to last season, scoring at the 2010 NEC Outdoor championships in the Discus with a PR. In the jumps, sophomores Fallon Heddings and Alexis Hurd made an impact in 2009-10 and are expected to do so this year.
Athlete Profiles ReD FlAsh FACT The Red Flash women’s track & field team has excelled in the field since 1999, winning at least one field event in the NEC Indoor championships in 10 of the past 11 years and at least one at the NEC Outdoor championships in 11 of the last 12 years.

The northeast Conference
W
hen the Northeast Conference (NEC) was first established as the ECAC-Metro Conference back in 1981, the league’s founders had one goal in mind: to create a competitive NCAA Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. A single-sport entity at its inception, the NEC has grown far beyond expectations over the past three decades, having transformed itself into a burgeoning 12-member, 23-sport conference. To mark the NEC’s 30th Anniversary season in 2010-11, the Conference will proudly celebrate its heritage as its builds toward a promising future. The NEC and its member institutions are committed to providing opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom. Likewise, the Conference continually strives to be an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The remarkable success story of the conference began to unfold in 1985, when the league began sponsoring additional sports. Three years later, a change of name was in order and the Northeast Conference as we know it today was born. With membership and sport sponsorship continuing to grow over the next 25 years, the NEC now enjoys qualification or play-in access to 14 different NCAA Championships (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball). Though the NEC has featured various incarnations since its inception, charter members Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Robert Morris, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner remain part of the current 12-school alignment. They are joined by Monmouth (admitted in 1985), Mount St. Mary’s (1989), Central Connecticut State (1997), Quinnipiac (1998) and Sacred Heart (1999). NEC expansion continues with the addition of Bryant University in 2012 as the league’s 12th member, which will give the league a six-state geographic footprint with access to such major media markets as New York City, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Providence. NEC member institutions now compete in 23 championship sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. 31

The sToKes Club
Give a Gift, Build a Legacy... Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those who have generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club. The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round. With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improved every day working conditions within the athletic department. We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward and take our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athletics is very bright because you care about our student-athletes. ME MBERSH IP
