Patrick Gallagher heAD CoACh | eIGhTh SeASon Entering his eighth season at the helm of the Saint Francis University swimming program, Patrick Gallagher has his squad in a completely new position: defending Northeast Conference Champions. After years of continual improvement at the conference championship meet, the 2009-10 Red Flash finally broke through, claiming the program's first NEC Championship. Now, Gallagher – who was named the league's Coach of the Year – turns his focus to maintaining a championship-caliber program. Already the program's winningest coach with 42 career victories, Gallagher welcomes back 12 All-NEC first team selections and nine program record holders as the Flash aim to follow up a season, which, quite literally, rewrote the record books. In the 2010 NEC Championship meet alone, 68 swims resulted in 47 all-time top 10 times, 20 medals, 18 school records and, ultimately, one conference title. The first event of the meet – the 200-yard freestyle relay – brought SFU it’s first gold medal since 2001. The Flash went on to collect a total of six gold medals, nine silver and five bronze. After inheriting a program that won only four meets over the previous two seasons, Gallagher coached his team to a sixth place finish in the then-13 team NEC and a school record-tying 10 dual meet victories just three seasons later in 2005-06. In 2006-07, his team posted a second consecutive 10-win season and climbed to a fourth-place finish among the field of 14 at the league championship meet. In 2008 the Flash earned a then-program-best second place finish at the NEC meet and followed it up with a third place performance in 2009. His teams have also performed at a high level in the classroom as evidenced by SFU’s citation as a College Swim Coaches’ Association of America Academic AllAmerican team. Gallagher arrived at Saint Francis during the summer of 2003 after serving as an assistant coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., for two seasons (20012003). Prior to his time at Cornell, Gallagher served as head girls’ swimming coach at Methacton High School in Norristown, Pa., during the 1999-2000 season. He also served as Assistant Aquatics Director at the Albany Country Club in Voorheesville, N.Y., from 1995-2001, and has worked as an instructor at swim camps at Cornell, the University of Nebraska, University of New Hampshire and the University of Vermont. A 1999 graduate of LaSalle University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, Gallagher taught at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, for a year following his tenure as head coach at Methacton. Gallagher is a member of the College Swim Coaches Association of America and the American Swim Coaches Association. He has also earned a master’s degree at Saint Francis. Pat and his wife, Megan, were married in 2008 and reside in Ebensburg. 12
Jeni Ritter ASSISTAnT CoACh | FIRST SeASon Jeni Ritter enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Saint Francis University Swimming program in 2010-11. Ritter joined the Red Flash family after spending the past two seasons in the same capacity at Florida International University. Ritter spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as an assistant swimming coach at FIU, where she coordinated recruiting and community outreach events in addition to a variety of administrative responsibilities for the Golden Panther program. In 2007, Ritter joined the men's swimming staff at Ohio State as a volunteer coach and was also involved with the program's swim camps and clinics. Before arriving in Columbus, she spent the 2006-07 season as an intern assistant coach at Division III King's College in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Ritter's first coaching assignment was as an assistant at Ashland (Ohio) High School, where she coached two swimmers to Division I state qualifying times during the 2004-05 campaign. She also coached two seasons (2005-06 & 2007-08) at Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio. As an undergraduate at Ashland (Ohio) University, Ritter was a five-time honorable mention All-America selection for the Eagles and served as the team's captain during the 2003-04 season. Graduating in 2005, she earned a Bachelor's in Recreation & Coaching with a minor in Sports Administration from the University. Ritter also holds a M.A. in Sports and Exercise Science from The Ohio State University and is currently working toward a Master of Science degree in Higher Education Administration from Florida International. A resident of nearby Ebensburg, Ritter enjoys reading, working out and watching sports in her spare time. 13

Fter clAiming itS FirSt nortHeASt conFerence cHAmPionSHiP in 2009-10, and despite being a preseason favorite to repeat, the Saint Francis University swimming team faces a tough test to stay on top in 2010-11. After losing a talented senior class to graduation, eighth-year head coach Patrick gallagher will welcome an accomplished 11-women freshman class – which ranks among the largest in program history – to Loretto. With a stable of 10 returning veterans leading the way, many of which rank highly in school annals, the rebuilt Red Flash will once again need to prove themselves as a force in the region.
Freestyle Leading the way for the sprint freestyle corps will be sophomore Alicia Ford (whitney Point, n.y./whitney Point). This second-year swimmer was a key contributor on four conference championship relays and also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at the 2010 NEC championships. Classmate kim Davis (greensburg, Pa./greensburg-Salem) – who jumped into the eight-spot on the SFU all-time top-10 list with a 25.11 in the 50 free as a rookie – will also contribute in the short events. Several of the new faces in Red Flash swimming will be looking to make an impact in the sprint freestyle events. meghan cotungo (cape coral, Fla./ cape coral), Shelby murphy (calgary, Alberta/national Sport School) Vanessa costanza (Apollo, Pa./kiski Area) and gabrielle Pierre (Valencia, Pa./mars) will all compete in sprint freestyle. Gabrielle becomes the fourth member of her family to swim for the Red Flash, joining sisters Evann, Jaclynn and current sophomore Chloe. One of the strongest areas of talent and depth for the 2010-11 Red Flash will be the middle distance freestyle events. The unquestioned leader of the group, however, is senior tri-captain melissa Heintz (boyertown, Pa./oley Valley). Heintz, who established three individual
top-10 times at the NEC Championships in 2010, was also a part of three schoolrecord relay teams, two of which earned gold at NECs. Joining Heintz in the middle distance events will be newcomers Jennifer Demjanenko (new Albany, ohio/ gahanna-lincoln) and megan collins (monroeville, Pa./oakland catholic). Megan comes to Loretto from traditionrich Oakland Catholic, which captured two PIAA titles during her scholastic career. Rounding out the freestylers is the distance freestyle crew. Junior bethany lanzendoen (river edge, n.J./river Dell) and sophomore kathleen lyon (king george, Va./king george) will handle the bulk of the duties in distance events after helping the 800-yard freestyle relay team to a second-place finish at the 2010 NEC Championship with a school-record time of 7:48.51. Lyon will look for continued improvement this season after an outstanding rookie campaign, which saw her clinch the SFU records in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650yard freestyle events. Lanzendoen has notched five spots on the school's top-10 list in her career, including the number two spot in the 1,000-yard free. The pair scored in a combined five events in last season's league championship. 14
Freshmen elise löfgren (molnlycke, Sweden/Hulebacks), who earned 10th place in the 800-meter free at Swedish Nationals over the summer, will add instant depth to freestyle events.
backstroke In addition to seeing some reps in individual medley events, junior tri-captain Jessica Dunn (bistow, Va./Seton School) returns as the leader of Saint Francis' backstroke unit. Dunn earned a second place finish at last season's NEC meet in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:04.94 was also a program record. Senior kayla Hollstadt (minneapolis, minn./Southwest) and sophomore madison madore (State college, Pa./State college Area) will add depth in the backstroke. The Red Flash will add freshman katrina wilhite (Sparks, nevada/edward c. reed) – a state qualifier in the 100-yard backstroke – to the fold as well.
breaststroke Junior tri-captain chloe Pierre (Valencia, Pa./mars) is the sole returner for the Red Flash in the breaststroke events, but will be supported by a duo of talented newcomers. Pierre scored in the 100- and 200-yard events at the 2009-10 NEC Championship,
notching program top-10 and personalbest times in both. Löfgren and Murphy who will crossover from freestyle events will join her. Löfgren notched a 14th place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke at Swedish Nationals over the summer with a time of 2:42:61.
butterfly Senior Hanna yttring (gothenburg, Sweden/katrinelundsgymnasiet) enters her second season with the Red Flash having already rewritten much of the program's record book. Yttring holds three SFU records – including those in the 100- and 200-yard fly –and was a part of all four league-title-winning and school-record relay teams from 200910. Freshmen libby Francis (Dundee, Scotland/ grove Academy), kelly marcotte (whitney Point, n.y./whitney Point), Joy mullins
(waynesboro, Pa./mercersburg Academy) and freestyler Demjanenko will add championship-caliber depth in fly events. Francis reached the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter butterfly at the 2010 Scottish Age Group Nationals, while Marcotte is a former New York state qualifier and Mullins brings national meet experience at the YMCA level.
individual medley Another deep event for the Flash in 2010-11, the individual medley is led by defending conference champion in the 200-yard distance, Yttring. Her 2:05.48 stands as the school record in the event as well. Dunn holds the second fastest time in school history in the 400-yard event and Madore finished 10th at the 2010 championship meet. Any number of this year's newcomers can add depth to these events, but Löfgren and Francis can contribute immediately.

Schedule The Red Flash face a rigorous ten-event slate leading up to the three-day NEC Championship meet which gets underway on Feb. 17, 2011 in Boston. Saint Francis opens its 2010-11 season at Cleveland State on Oct. 15, then hosts Mount St. Mary's in the first of four home meets on Oct. 23; the Flash welcome Central Connecticut and Duquesne the following Saturday (Oct. 30). After competing in invitationals at Loyola and Rutgers, SFU will closeout the 2010 calendar year with a trip to Ohio State to take part in the AT&T Short Course National Championships on Dec. 2-4. The Flash resume their season on Jan. 15 when they visit Youngstown State, then travel to the Rutgers Invitational (Jan. 22-23) before returning to Loretto to host Siena (Jan. 29) and La Salle (Feb. 5) to close out the regular season.

The Stokes Club
Give a Gift, Build a Legacy... Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those who have generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club. The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round. With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improved every day working conditions within the athletic department. We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward and take our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athletics is very bright because you care about our student-athletes. ME MBERSH IP
