Paul Tobin heAD CoACh | FIRST SeASon Paul Tobin enters his first season at the helm of the Saint Francis University men's and women's tennis programs in 2010-11. Tobin comes to Saint Francis with over 25 years of tennis coaching experience, working in all areas of the industry. For the past five years, Tobin served as the head tennis professional at JDS Tennis Center in Macon, Ga. – one of the largest public facilities in the south – and as assistant coach for NCAA Division II Georgia College's highly ranked men’s and women’s teams. Tobin holds the highest levels of certification, receiving a P-1 rating from USPTA, Professional Rating from PTR and is one of only 75 USTA High Performance Coaches in the United States. Tobin has coached at some of the most renowned academies in the United States, including Bollettieri Tennis Academy, Evert Tennis Center and the Port Washington Tennis Academy. As an assistant coach at Georgia College, Tobin helped head coach Steve Barsby lead his squad to an 18-4 overall record with a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play for the first Peach Belt Conference (PBC) men's tennis championship in school history. In 2010, both Georgia College programs turned in strong seasons, with the men taking third in the PBC and going 16-7 overall and the women finishing with a 12-12 mark. Both programs qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Alma mater . . . . . . . .Maryland ’86 Record at SFu . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .0-0 career Record . . . . . . . . . . . .Same
Tobin has also enjoyed coaching assignments at Bollettieri Tennis Academy, Evert Tennis Center, Saddlebrook Tennis Academy and the Port Washington Tennis Academy. He also works with professional tennis player John Isner and University of Georgia head coach Manny Diaz as the Director of On-Court drilling for their summer Nike Tennis Camps. In addition to his accomplishments in coaching, Tobin is also the developer of SlingHopper Drill Bags – a worldwide tennis-teaching product endorsed by legendary coaches Nick Bollettieri and Brad Gilbert, who serve as the company's spokespersons. The product has become widely-used in the coaching community and can be found on the practice courts at all the major Grand Slam events. In 2008, Tobin sold his company to Gamma Sports which distributes the bags worldwide. As a player, Tobin spent time in the programs at both Quinnipiac University and the University of Maryland and also competed on the European Futures Tour. Season outlook The Saint Francis University men's tennis program is, without doubt, in the midst of one of the most complete overhauls in its history.
nathaniel Fleming (gas city, ind./missossonewa), matthew Jurjevich (london, ontario/niagara Academy of Tennis) and Steven Robinson (lancaster, Pa./ lancaster county Day) round out a trio of juniors return from last season's 6-9 team. Robinson carried four singles matches in 2009-10, including three in NEC play, and will move to the no. 4 spot this season. Fleming will see much action this spring heading the no. 5.
Under new head coach Paul Tobin who arrived in Loretto in October, the Red Flash were able to participate in only one event in the fall season. With just a few weeks of preparation, Tobin quickly guided the men to a win – a 5-2 victory over Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's. The women, while they fell short of a win, put forth a solid effort in the setback.
With five members, the sophomore class in Saint Francis' deepest. Last year's NEC Rookie of the Year elahn Pogue (St. catherines, ontario/West Park) headlines the group. Pogue turned in a team-high 10 wins in no. 1 singles play as a freshman including a perfect 7-0 mark versus Northeast Conference opponents. Pogue will maintain is his no. 1 slot in both singles and doubles.
It was a modest opening to what promises to be challenging season for the Flash. Tobin, the first fulltime tennis coach in school history, is anxious to oversee the maturation of his squads over the course of the spring campaign. “I feel confident that my players will rise to the occasion for this very tough spring lineup,” said Tobin. “We are covering over 23 venues in a matter of three months and this will help develop strong match play leading up to the Northeast Conference Tournament. I know we are going up against some pretty tough competition, my players will have to dig deep to find their game and pull off some wins”
Joseph bellissimo (monroeville, Pa./ gateway), Kirby mendes (unionville, ontario/niagara Academy of Tennis), Youlian natchev (Sofia, bulgaria/Rovel college) and Andres Rosa (carolina, Puerto Rico/colegio la Piedad) – who was a strong performer in doubles play last year with six NEC wins under his belt – all return with a season of collegiate experience under their belts. Rosa will see tough action this spring being challenged in the no. 2 position, while Mendez will get a chance to compete at no. 6 singles.
Stephen Kowalski (Toms River, n.J./Toms River east) will captain the men's squad in the spring of 2011. SFU's sole senior, was second on last year's team with seven wins in singles play including four triumphs against league competition, most of which came at the no. 3 spot. Kowalski will see action in the no. 4 position.
Due to the fact that the Saint Francis' coaching search extending throughout the fall recruiting cycle, both squads are short on newcomers. Tobin, however, is optimistic about the response he's received on the trail early this year. “I am extremely excited about the response we're getting on the recruiting trail,” said Tobin. “I look forward to welcoming several new members to the Saint Francis men's and women's tennis programs in the fall. “ In the meantime, the Red Flash will face a grueling spring schedule that begins with Navy on Jan. 22 and includes dates with George Mason, Bucknell, Colgate, James Madison, St. John's, Stony Brook, Villanova and Connecticut, which will prepare the young teams for the NEC Tournament in April.

The Stokes Club
Give a Gift, Build a Legacy... Alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and staff are among those who have generously supported the Saint Francis University Stokes Club. The Stokes club is an organization which provides assistance and support to student-athletes participating in our 21-sport Division I Athletics Program. Our student-athletes and coaches work hard to represent Saint Francis University, and you, in a positive manner year-round. With your recent contributions, Saint Francis Athletics has enjoyed improvements at DeGol Field, which also includes Fr. Bede Hines Track, and the Stokes Softball Field. Contributions have also helped to improved every day working conditions within the athletic department. We are extremely proud of our past athletic and academic accomplishments. However, with your help we can move forward and take our programs to even greater success in the classroom, in the community and in our competition. The future of Red Flash Athletics is very bright because you care about our student-athletes. ME MBERSH IP
