adaptive reuse of the bazaar mosque learning center for oriental dance

student project for revitalisation of built heritage, 9th semester, 2012 location: The Bazaar Mosque, Prilep, Macedonia collaboration with: Bojana Koroshevska and Anastasija Nikolovska

The content of the project is a program that aims to create social interactions and attract more people. As the nature of the program focuses on revitalizing the Bazaar mosque, the old-new facility depicts itself as a recognizable structure, and with its form, materialization and details tends to become the new focus and benchmark architecture in the bazaar. This then will rejuvenate the object and give back its historical role as a hub of activity and social life in the environment, with a touch of modern purpose. The approach of proposing a new volume is unobtrusive in its material representation, with repetition/extension of some of the existing volumes of the mosque. Thus, the aim of the new facility is to regain the monumentality of the site by imitating the volume of the mosque and the use of bold materialization, which is not found in the closer environment.

The design of the landscape around the mosque forms a new social setting in the bazaar, a small square with three so-called scenes in the open with imprinted steps to learn some of the world famous dances. In order to draw the movement towards the entrance, this square continues with a ramp. The ground floor of the building is first accessed by the entrance lobby, where a small wardrobe and restrooms are situated in both the left and right wings. Then, the main stage is approached through glass doors set in the arcs of the mosque, with the auditorium set to the arcs and the scene set to mihrab of the mosque in the bottom.

7

With the stairs placed centrally above the entrance one arrives at the upper level where the following units are situated: shop and info desk of oriental dances and culture, coffee bar and a hall for dance practice and two changing rooms with sanitary and depot for costumes. Stairs, used for communicating between the hall and dressing rooms on the upper level and the stage on the lower level, crawl snugly against the back wall of the mosque. The structural system of the additions consists of lightweight prefabricated panels placed between a structure of a steel skeleton.

transforming an abandoned production facility into a new cultural facility - new cultural district

master thesis researching new programmatic and shaping models/typologies of public buildings, 2014 location: abandoned production site Kuprom, Skopje, Macedonia mentor: PhD Mihajlo Zinoski

When superposing historical layers and spatial overlapping of their elements, different relations and interactions are obtained. The purpose of this procedure is the process of re-qualification of the found production facility to be achieved through the attempt of preserving the language of the recognized architecture. Recalling upon Peter Eisenman's planning tactics, overlapping of shifting grids, the printout of the buildings that are not saved, is in one way applied to the new structure. The result is a new so-called "artificial archeology" of the new structure, which in itself carries the imprint of the previous context.

11

In the retained building of the production hall and the structure clinging next to it, a cultural and educational center is inserted, following the principle of "production" of culture and art in the new structure and "presentation" in the existing structure of the hall. The existing production hall incorporates: an auditorium (in the form of a small universal hall with additional rooms), exhibition space, depot, space for video projections, administration and accommodation for visiting artists. In the volume of the new structure one can find: multiple zones for workshops, painting and sculpture studio, choral singing and small stage for dance and acting, and on

the second floor a library, a mediatheque, a reading room and areas for individual and group research and debate. The structures appearing on the perimeter of the north-east and north-west side of the site, represent the economic stimulus for the cultural district and accommodate a creative market, shops for music, books and artistic materials, a publishing house and individual artistic study. In the remaining freestanding building, the ground floor is partly free and there is an open bar and a storage room for the restaurant which is located on the upper level.

12

The structural system and materialization are determined universally for all new structures, as two dependent aspects that should be derived from each other. The structural system comprises of load-bearing walls and slabs, assembly of precast reinforced concrete wall panels and slabs, similar to the system "Karposh", but yet in a modernized and modified form.

new multipurpose hall

Second prize for the design entry for construction of a new multipurpose hall in Skopje, 2013 location: Skopje, Macedonia authors: Iva Pavlovikj Latas, Margarita Popovska, Milka Cherepnalkovska, Bojana Koroshevska, Andrea Jamakoska, Martina Petkovska and Gorjan Venov

15

By abstracting/subtracting the volume of the old multipurpose hall from the given boundaries of the building location, the new model of the building is defined as a public space and a space that remembers and celebrates a past time, still focusing on the future and meeting the needs of the city. This inner plaza presents the womb of the new facility, the main venue for communication within the building and a focal point of gathering and attracting visitors and passersby in the goal of keeping the building active throughout the day. The accessing and communicating diagram to every single use of the new hybrid concept of the building is simply solved by assigning the ramp as a main pedestrian street throughout the void of the absent volume of the old hall. The emphasized public use as a main feature on the one hand and the context within which the comprehensive program should appear on the other hand, imposes the need of a new solution that comprises of a public space, accented, undoubtedly read out, and continuously flowing throughout the ground floor. Thus this location becomes undoubtedly an urban attraction.

16

On the account of the liberation of the ground floor as free space, the volume of the multipurpose hall is situated on the upper level, forming a new typology of urban colonnade, followed by three squares. Thereby the division of the spatial capacity in two parts (multipurpose hall and the additional contents) is visible, and they are being continuously connected through the access ramp/street that runs throughout the inner plaza of the object. The structural duality is also preserved. In the segment of the additional uses a skeleton structural systems comprising of reinforced concrete columns

17

and beams is implemented in a simple manner, while the part of the hall comprises of load-bearing walls. Finally, the first contact with the new building is established through its facade manifestation. The offered solution defines a double facade treatment, where the primary is comprised of glazed areas where it is necessary or full facade and a secondary facade of aluminum perforated membrane, a concept of theater curtain, contributing to the sustainability and energy efficiency of the building, but also shaping the character and metaphorical manifestation of the primary purpose of the building.

hotel and a public o p e n s p a c e d o l n i s a r a j

student project for architectural design studio, 7th semester, 2011 location: summer stage Dolni Saraj, Ohrid, Macedonia collaboration with: Bojana Koroshevska

"The Old Town" of Ohrid, with its particular topographic configuration and landscape, is extensively rich in monumental buildings from different parts of its history. The commitment to change it or upgrade it is a great responsibility. The historical locality of Dolni Saraj, situated on one of the most beautiful terraces above the Lake Ohrid, just above the church of St. Sophia, calls for monumentality, abstraction of the idea, simple geometry and materials that emphasize the abovementioned aspects. The complete disposition of the program is represented by the two longitudinal parts placed alongside the eastern and the western edge of the terrace. In these parts the main users units are organized: the accommodation capacities and other contents for the guests in the eastern, and the services and administrative units in the western part. The two parts are connected with a transept at the southern side, where the restaurant is located. Below the level of the ground floor there is a spa center, in the form dictated by a so-called artificial archeology.

19

20

Such a disposition of the volumes shapes an inner courtyard - plaza, leading from the entrance on the north side to the auditorium and balcony on the southern. This square represents an urban public space, and as it serves as a communication spot in the hotel, it is a stimulus of the social life in the city of Ohrid.

new faculty buildings at the university c a m p u s

design entry for construction of new faculties of Computer Science and Engineering and Physical Education, Sport and Health, 2014 location: University Campus, Skopje, Macedonia authors: Iva Pavlovikj Latas, Margarita Popovska, Martina Petkovska, Toshe Andonov and Gorjan Venov

The university campus of St. Cyril and Methodius is one of the most significant point of reference in the city. Defined as the center of education and progress, with its unique configuration and architecture, it creates a whole new system of social living dedicated to education and innovation.

Starting from the ground level, the main recognizable feature is defined as "the internal street", which creates the public nature of the building and allows an uninterrupted communication through it. Different uses in the building are situated tangentially around this component.

The first contact with the building is established through its facade manifestation, of course. All three segments flow into one another vertically and the insertion of the concrete facade segments and ribs is in direct interaction with the formal configuration of the other buildings at the university campus.

The new Faculty of Computer Sciences and Engineering is defined to be the flagship of this idea. Occupying the most out of its building area as a result of the dense disposition of the program segments, the building is defined as a system of public and semi-public spaces intended primarily for its users.

The vertical arrangement of the program provides circular configuration around the galleries of the internal street. The main program segments are defined as: educational center, research center and computer center, are accessible and used as separate units, but also joint sections that flow through the suggested volume.

The facade articulation and morphological configuration of the building is in a direct communication with the Faculty of physical education, sport and health. Due to their urban design that forms a special micro-site, the two buildings interact and create a space that is undisturbed by the differences in their appearance.

25

26

The formal manner of the new building for the Faculty of Physical Education, Sport and Health epitomizes the use of spaces dedicated to physical movement and sports. The main communication in the building is a system of ramps with a dual function - distribution of users and a jogging path. Thus, this system of ramps becomes the main "sports internal street" in the building. This street is connected with the micro-site, allowing continuous physical activity in and out of it. The emphasis is placed on the proposed solution of the segment of the sports hall, the holder of the whole program.

27

With its disposition in the the basement level, and the dual approach (from underground and ground level), maximum use of the program unit is ensured and the continuous distribution of the rest of the program is enabled. The first contact with the building is established through its facade manifestation. The dominant approach is the use of the dark fiberglass facade finish which in places is interrupted by the use of glazed surfaces. In the dominant shell of fiberglass finish, the occurrence of big openings that oversees "behind" the shell is striking.

the water and the architectonic space: recreational spa

student project for architectural design studio, 8th semester, 2012 location: the village of Janche, Mavrovo, Macedonia

29

30

The outgoing parameter in the genesis of the spatial disposition of the different volumes of the recreational spa originates from the spatial organization of the houses and barns in the village, usually with a square floor plan and intuitively arranged regarding the topographic configuration. Consequently the spa center intends to generate a center of events by itself, partially detached from the village.

31

The different program units are grouped by similarity (spa services, physiotherapy, accommodation and gastronomic center) in different volumes, with previously adopted dimensions. The final architecture of the complex is unobtrusive and in a way nuanced with the untouched nature of the micro location, and it seems as it was grown there.
