Dear Goshen College community and friends,

As we look back on the 2023-2024 academic year, I am filled with gratitude and joy for the various ways our campus community continues to innovate, adapt and pursue excellence while remaining deeply rooted in our mission, vision and values.

Here are a few highlights I want to share with you from our 2023-2024 academic year on campus:

• On September 1, we hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the historic $21 million Westlawn Hall renovation project. This renovation will allow significant growth for the new Center for Nursing and Public Health in state-ofthe-art learning spaces, as well as provide enhanced dining services and indoor and outdoor gathering spaces that serve the entire campus.

• Professor Emeritus of History John D. Roth ’81 authored a new college history book, “A Mennonite College for Everyone(?): Goshen College and the Quest for Identity and Inclusion, 1960-2020.” It vividly describes the transformation of this faith-based, liberal arts college as it wrestled with questions of identity and inclusion in a context of rapid social and cultural change.

• In October, the U.S. Department of Education awarded us a highly competitive $3 million Title V Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) grant. This grant will propel the institution’s efforts to support student success and close the equity gap over the next five years.

• We announced the launching of a new academic initiative, an Honors Program, designed to provide a transformative educational experience for high-achieving students, including a dynamic community cohort and deep learning experiences, including various forms of research, specialty seminars, service and leadership opportunities and a capstone course. Dr. Rob Brenneman, professor of criminal justice and sociology, is leading the new program.

• Dr. John Mischler, associate professor of sustainability and environmental education, was honored with a Fulbright fellowship in order to foster his educational collaboration with universities in Indonesia, where he has been involved in farm-based research related to sustainability. A biogeochemist by training, Mischler’s research focuses primarily on examining phosphorus levels in ecosystems.

• During Homecoming Weekend 2023, five outstanding alumni were given alumni awards for their commitment to living out our mission and values: Daryl Abbott ’69, Goshen (Culture for Service Award); Pauline (Graybill) Kennel ’53, Goshen (Culture for Service Award); Jeremy Pope ’11, Nashville, Tennessee (Young Alumni Servant Leadership Award); Melissa (Lehman) Gillette ’05, Goshen (Maple Leaf Athletics: Dr. Ruth Gunden Champion of Character Award); and Geof Landis ’76, Goshen (Maple Leaf Athletics: Dr. Roman Gingerich Champion of Character Award).

On behalf of all of us at Goshen College, I thank each of you for your generous giving and vital contributions that helped make all of this possible. Through you, we continue to nurture life, leadership and service in this deeply rooted community “where everything connects.”

In joyful service,

Dr. Rebecca J. Stoltzfus ’83 President of Goshen College
