Interpretive displays, presentations and programs create opportunities for learning experiences. Group programs are offered for children, families, adults and seniors. All age groups and school levels are invited to participate. Community program topics include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

The Environmental Resilience Department’s primary purpose is education, with a focus on interpreting the natural, cultural and industrial heritage of our community. Through its programs and its use opportunities, the department exemplifies the concept of reconciliation between humanity and environment. The department provides universal access to all of its educational opportunities. Hours: Open to the public on Monday–Thursday, 8 am–4 pm, and open Fridays by appointment for programs, activities and events. Located at Rieth Interpretive Center in Millrace Park, 410 West Plymouth Avenue.

Outdoor Activities

Elkhart River Canoe and Fidler Pond Boat Rentals

Take a canoe trip on the Elkhart River or enjoy Fidler Pond with a canoe, kayak or pedal boat. Lifejackets are provided for ages 4 and up (not recommended for children ages 3 and under). An adult must accompany children under age 18. Season: April 15–October 15 Maximum capacity per canoe: two adults and two children, or three adults • Plan accordingly! Please take note of the water currents, obstructions and weather. • Glass containers are prohibited. • Please do not litter. Pack it in, pack it out!

Fidler Pond Boat Rentals

Visit the red barn at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, for your boat rentals. • One- or 2-hour boat rentals. • Rentals offered daily beginning at 8 am; all boat returns are 1 hour prior to dusk, so please plan accordingly.

Fidler Pond Boat Rental Fees

• Canoe, kayak and pedal boat rental fees are $10 (tax included) per hour per boat. • Fishing pole rental (for bank fishing) is $2 for 2 hours. • Lifejackets are mandatory while on Fidler Pond; if you bring your own canoe or kayak and need a lifejacket, rental is $2 for 2 hours.

Elkhart River Canoe Trip

• Shanklin Park on West Plymouth Avenue to Ox Bow

County Park. • Trip length is approximately 4 hours. • Canoe trip is offered daily: 10 am departure, 2 pm pickup. • Shuttle service is provided from Ox Bow Park back to

Shanklin Park. Parents/guardians must supply car/booster seats for children. • Visit the Goshen Park Office at least 96 hours in advance to make your Elkhart River canoeing reservations. Online reservations also are available.

Elkhart River Canoe Rental Fees

• Rental fee is $40 + tax per canoe.

Tyler S. Joldersma Skate Park

A skate park re-design is in the planning and permitting phases. The current skate park equipment will be removed during the redesign phase. Please check in for updates or to learn how you can get involved in the redesign process.

Mullet Park Disc Golf Course

Location: 505 South Indiana Avenue Cost: Free NO onsite parking. Please park at the north end of Shanklin Park. A big thank you to Kevin Hinkle and Stuart Meade for the nine-hole course’s vision, design and setup.

Sprocket Dog Park

Location: 109 South 9th Street Features: Large/small dog areas, doggie drinking fountain and fun play features; the park is conveniently located at the north end of the Ninth Street Trail. We thank the East Lincoln Crossroads Neighborhood Association for leading the effort to create Goshen’s new dog park.

Cross-Country Skiing and Snow Tube Rental

Winter Rentals are available to rent at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office, 524 East Jackson Street. Neither Abshire Cabin nor the tubing hill is staffed. The season begins in December and ends in late March when there is sufficient snow cover and while supplies last. Very limited supply of snow skis.

Goshen now has 21.3 miles of pedestrian/bike paths and trails? The Maple City Greenway consists of 17 a network of various bicycle and pedestrian trails throughout Goshen that link homes, parks, schools, the library and the downtown area. Thirteen of these trails are described below (also see maps at right).

•Abshire Park Trail, a crushed stone surface, 10 feet wide, connects Pumpkinvine Nature Trail along Rock Run Creek to Monroe Street. Distance: 1.5 miles •Central City Trail is a brick-edged sidewalk linking Goshen College, Goshen Public Library, Goshen High School, Elkhart County Courthouse and the downtown area. Distance: 2 miles •Fidler Pond Park Walking/Biking Track, a crushed-stone surface, 8 feet wide, is a walking and biking track that follows the perimeter of Fidler Pond. Distance: 1.5 miles •Kercher Trail is a concrete surface that is 10 feet wide that connects Kercher Sunrise Orchards to an industrial park and U.S. 33. Distance: 2.5 miles •Millrace Trail, a crushed-stone surface, 8 feet wide, follows the hydraulic canal and connects Shoup-Parsons Woods, Shanklin Park and the Elkhart County Courthouse. Distance: 1 mile •Northwest Bike Trail, a concrete surface, 10 feet wide, connects Bashor Road (C.R. 30) to Reliance Road (Old C.R. 17), continuing north to U.S. 33 and to Market Centre shopping area. Distance: 2.5 miles •Plymouth Avenue Trail connects Shanklin Park with Goshen Middle School over the Elkhart River and continues to Hay Park and Greene Road. Paved surface, 10 feet wide. Distance: 1.6 miles •Pringle Park Walking Track, a crushed-stone surface, 8 feet wide, is a walking track that follows the perimeter of Pringle Park. Distance: .5 mile •Pumpkinvine Nature Trail is a crushed-stone surface, 10 feet wide, that runs along Rock Run Creek and Abshire Park, continuing to C.R. 28, connecting to Middlebury and Shipshewana. Open Public Swim

Whether your summer fun includes water slides, diving boards, lap swims, open swims, swim lessons, pool parties or just sunbathing, Shanklin Pool is your summer hot spot! Our concession stand is open during public swim hours with a full menu. The pool is open daily May 28–July 31, as well as Saturdays and Sundays through August 28.

Monday–Friday: Daily hours: 12–4 pm Opening and closing dates are Twilight hours: 6–8 pm weather-dependent. Saturday–Sunday: 12–7 pm For open public swim, twilight admission and season pass fees please visit our web page, contact Shanklin Pool directly or contact our administrative office.

Group Rates

Half-price daily admission is offered to organizations or corporations with a Federal Tax ID Number that have 10 or more guests visiting the pool. Organizations must schedule group visits with the pool manager in advance; call 533-7616 or the Park Office at 534-2901. A Federal Tax ID Number must be presented prior to the visit in order to receive the group rate. Otherwise, the full admission price will be charged—no exceptions. At least one adult per 10 youths is required.

Pool Rental

Saturday and Sunday: 10 am–12 noon, or 7–9 pm; $225 + tax per two-hour time slot, for up to 30 guests.

Family Fun Days!

Each Wednesday, 6–8 pm. Pool games and fun activities. Families* are admitted for $6.

Fair Week

From July 22 to 30 when you visit Shanklin Pool you receive 1/2 off your pool admission. Season-pass holders also receive a free slushie!

Red Cross-Certified Beginner to Advanced Swim Lessons

Swim lessons are offered under the instruction of certified instructors and their assistants. Classes follow the American Red Cross standards, focusing on levels of water exploration, primary skills, stroke readiness and stroke development. Class space is limited, so please register early to ensure availability. Adult lessons and specific stroke training are available upon request; call 533-7616. Beginner lessons are for ages 5+ and are $55 per session.

Join Friends and Family at Shanklin Pool for Dive-In Movie Night!

When: Saturday, June 11 at 8 pm Fee: $3 per person Guests can float with the aid of water noodles (not provided), relax on the floatables (not provided) or lounge on the poolside chairs while they enjoy Space Jam, a popular, family-friendly movie. No need to register. Doors will open at 7:30 pm. Pool rules will apply to all patrons. Please note: The diving board and slide will be closed during and after the movie. NO OPEN SWIM DURING THE MOVIE. Pool capacity is limited to the first 200 guests. Dive-in movies are not available for rental or private events. The concession stand will be open during the movie.

Red Cross-Certified Parent and Child Swim Lessons

Our skilled instructors provide a fun learning environment for toddlers while they explore the pool. Swim diapers are required and may be purchased at the pool. During Class A, a parent will accompany the child in the water. During Class B, a parent will accompany 3-yearold children for the first few classes to assist in transition. Fee is $55 per session. College Student Thrifty Thursdays

You won’t need a loan for this! Enjoy some fun in the sun. Each Thursday, college students with a college photo ID will be admitted all day at the twilight rate of $2.

Grandparents’ Summer Sittin’ Tuesdays

Baby-sitting? Spend a day at the pool. Each Tuesday, grandparents receive free admission when accompanied by children 3 years and older. Regular fees apply for grandchildren.

Teen Scene Mondays

Mondays aren’t dreary when it’s summer! Each Monday, teens are admitted all day at the evening rate of $2. Bring your school ID and your friends—and celebrate summer Mondays.

Daddy’s Day Dip

Kids, on Sunday, June 19 bring your dad to Shanklin for his Father’s Day gift. Picnic in the park or “dine” at Shanklin’s concession stand. Fathers accompanied by children will be admitted free. Regular rates apply for children.

Dance Programs

Dance attire varies by instructor and by the different forms of dance. At registration, please request a copy of the dance attire requirements for your class. Also please note dance attire: • Hair needs to be up and out of face. • Dancers may wear a leotard and tights with skirt/shorts or form fitting tshirt/tank top and shorts/leggings. • Creative Dance should have ballet slippers. • Ballet or jazz shoes are required for ballet/ jazz/lyrical. • Sneakers (not worn outside) are required for hip hop, and jazz shoes (or sneakers/barefoot) are prefered for pom Pre-registration is required at the Park Office. Instructors will assist in class placement; please contact the Park Office for details. Classes meet at our new studio located at 524 East Jackson Street. Since class size is limited and your child will be taking a place in class upon registration, refunds will not be issued after class capacity is met or registration closes, whichever occurs first.

Fall 2022

•Registration opens January 3. Registration deadline is August 28. •Session I classes begin the week of August 29. Classes meet for 14 weeks. Classes will not meet September 5, fall break and Thanksgiving break. •All classes have limited enrollment; please register early to ensure availability.

Winter 2023

•Registration begins November 1, 2022. Registration deadline is January 6, 2023. •This exciting session prepares dancers for the Spring Concert on stage in April. In addition to class instruction, dancers will learn choreography and be involved in costume fittings for the performance. This process requires commitment from dancers for a 14- to 16-week session. •A Spring Concert dance costume, chosen by instructors, must be purchased for this session, not to exceed $50. •Session II begins the week of January 9, 2023, and goes through April 24, 2023. Monday classes will not meet February 20 or April 3. Classes meet for 14 weeks. •All class sizes have limited enrollment, so please register early to ensure availability.

Creative Dance

Class will focus on creative dance movement, including learning to follow rhythm, mirroring technique and improvisation.

Ballet/Jazz/Lyrical

Dancers will get exposure and experience in three popular styles of dance. Each class, dancers will learn ballet and jazz terms, movement, style, and technique while being able to apply these learned styles to a lyrical dance performance.

Hip Hop

Dancers will spend the first half of class focused on pom style, motions, and technique and the second half will emphasize classic, freestyle hip hop. They will learn two short routines focused on each style.

Modern/Ballet for Children with Special Needs

This class will contain the same elements as Modern/Ballet. Students will learn the vocabulary of Modern and Ballet with sensitivity to dancers’ needs. Class will evolve according to the progression of the participants. Please speak with instructor regarding enrollment.

Soccer Camp

This motivating four-day camp focuses on teaching soccer fundamentals, purpose, body balance, safety, directional movements, heading, goalie positioning, ball handling and sportsmanship. Our experienced instructors keep the ball rolling with this engaging camp. Pre-register at the Park Office from now until June 7—or until the camp is full. Dates and times are subject to change dependent on instructor schedule.

The program begins with a two–day camp that will meet January 8 and 15, 2022. The camp is designed to introduce those new to the sport and to further participants’ understanding by instructing on a variety of basketball rules, while players also learn new skills. In addition, this allows coaches and staff to assess abilities to better create balanced teams.

Our program is designed to encourage athletic activity and a love of the great game of basketball. The program places an emphasis on effort, participation and skill development. Champion Force Cheerleading

Participants gain a sense of team spirit, improved selfesteem and readiness for high school cheer squad tryouts. In our program, we teach cheerleading and pompom techniques, jumps, stunts, cheers, chants, dance steps and voice projection. Coaches choreograph a competition routine, which all students learn and practice throughout the session in preparation for our Cheer Competition. Champion Force is a non-profit youth outreach program. Champion

I Try Sailing

This nautical program is a free introductory sailing clinic for youths ages 8–15. Come see what it takes to sail and discover a new interest! This is a great introduction to our Sailing Camp (below). I Try Sailing is being offered Wednesdays June 1 to August 3. The I Try Sailing clinics will meet at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, on Wednesday, from 10 am to noon. Students must be able to swim and if under 18 be accompanied by an adult. All equipment and materials are provided.

Sailing Camp

This camp is focused on introducing youths ages 8–15 to the sport of sailing. The camp teaches a new skill base consisting of nautical terminology, parts of a sailboat, knot tying and teamwork. Plus, there is water sailing time. This camp empowers boys and girls to do great things on their own. The camp will offer students meaningful opportunities for building self-confidence and self-discovery while cultivating an appreciation of our natural resources. It brings young people to the outdoors, connecting them with nature to measure wind speed and direction and to be aware of weather conditions. Camp meets at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East. Preregistration is required by camp start date. Cost of the camp is $110. All equipment and materials are provided. Ages 8–15: Monday to Friday, June 27–July 1 9 am–12 noon

Art Camp

This stimulating art study course is taught utilizing various art materials, as well as incorporating the study of nature. The class instructor will capture campers’ interest, guiding both their aspirations and inspirations! Class meets at the Park Office, 524 East Jackson Street.
