WELCOME Going strong for four years and growing steadily with each edition! This year brings one extra screening room and the addition of a festival pavilion, allowing us to present an even larger and more divers program while at the same time creating a superb festival atmosphere. For five days in a row, everything you require in order to immerse yourself completely in short films will be at your fingertips. Selecting the must-sees and most beautiful gems out of the huge amount of entries for our competitions was both a joy and a challenge. Fortunately, we had the help of an expanded selection committee, who ploughed through the 2.153 short films received this year. 120 of these will be screened in the European, Dutch and Student Competitions. We would especially like to mention the three world premieres, made possible through crowd funding. We are delighted to see the great affection for shorts of many, and the willingness to support filmmakers who have stories that need to be told.

INDUSTRY EVENTS There are several social events, professional activities, concerts and parties during the festival, which are great opportunities to meet up. Sometimes you’ll need to sign up in advance at the guest service. Detailed information, locations and times are available at the guest service.
CALENDAR Wed 14/3 – 10:00 – Festival Pavilion Lecture by Fons Merkies
Wed 14/3 – 20:30 – LUX 2 Friday will be filled with industry activities. If your stay will be limited to one day, this will probably be your best choice. Joining the common thread running through the festival, the focus will be on the interplay between music and film. In collaboration with Eye International, NBF (the Dutch Association of Film and TV professionals) and other partners we have put together a full day’s program, including panel discussions and lectures aimed both at filmmakers and musicians. Some of the activities are based on invites, others on subscription. An accreditation gives access to all industry events including the industry day. If you are interested in visiting our Industry Day, please contact our guest service.

LECTURES & PRESENTATIONS IMPACT OF MUSIC Wed 14/3 – 10:00 – Festival Pavilion
Lecture by Fons Merkies Fons Merkies will give a lecture about the impact of music on film. Music is a powerful stylistic device, but there’s a danger lurking in its power. It has the potential to completely dictate the mood and interpretation of the public. Merkies is one of the most productive and esteemed composers for Dutch film and television and has received a Golden Calf for his work on Boy Ecury (2003). He was first trained as an actor, but became a full-time composer after his score for All Stars (1997) was highly applauded.
NARRATIVE SOUND IN FILM Wed 14/3 – 20:30 – LUX 2
Lecture by Michel Schöpping Michel Schöpping will give a lecture on sound in film narrative. Schöpping is known as a gifted sound designer. He worked on the soundtrack for The Misfortunates (Felix van Groeningen, 2009) and also received wide acclaim 12 GOSHORT/2012
with his soundtrack for the film Altiplano (Peter Brosens & Jessica Hope Woodworth, 2009). He was responsible for numerous documentaries and audio productions for television. Besides this, Michel Schöpping teaches at the NFTA Dutch Film & Television Academy. Starting with the definition of film, he will continue to what this means for the dimension of sound. Rich narrative examples of sound in film will be analyzed and discussed.
FOLEY: A WHOLE WORLD OF SOUND Thu 15/3 – 20:00 – Festival Pavilion
Presentation by Mel Kutbay The unheard king of sound, Mel Kutbay, has created sounds for over a hundred films. He is a living legend, who has been working as a foley artist for over four decades. You will find his name on the credits list of films such as Das Boot (1981), In the Name of The Rose (1986) and The Never Ending Story III (1994). Mel Kutbay has resided in Munich since 1986, where he runs a famous recording
studio which has provided the sound effects for many Dutch films and television shows, from Verhoeven’s Spetters (1980) to recent films such as Dik Trom (Arne Toonen, 2010) and De Heineken Ontvoering (Maarten Treurniet, 2011). Mel Kutbay is still at the top of his profession, proving that foley is a talent that can never be fully replaced by digital sound libraries. Mel Kutbay will talk about his work and experiences through the years. His stories and anecdotes will be accompanied by film examples and audio tracks. If you are interested in foley, sound design or just curious what makes Mel Kutbay such a talented craftsman, then this event is something you don’t want to miss!
LECTURES & PRESENTATIONS WELL, YOU CAN TELL BY THE WAY I USE MY WALK THE AESTHETICS AND POLITICS OF THE MUSIC VIDEO Fri 16/3 – 14:00 – LUX 1
Beyond The Music Video Jaap Kooijman is an associate professor Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on the relation between art, pop culture, and politics. He is the author of Fabricating the Absolute Fake: America in Contemporary Pop Culture (2008).
One of the most iconic images in the history of the music film is the opening sequence of Saturday Night Fever, featuring John Travolta strutting down the sidewalk on the beat of the Bee Gee’s “Staying Alive”. With this image in mind, twelve music videos were selected which all share walking in public space as their visual leitmotiv. Spanning two decades (1991-2011), the selection highlights both the continuity and the changes in the music video genre. Once predominantly shown on broadcast (music) television, most music videos are now viewed online. As a genre, the music video is positioned in between commercial entertainment and art, both selling a pop star to a larger audience as well as expressing the artistic vision of its performer or director. Ranging from music videos that showcase pop stars such as Michael
Jackson and Bruce Springsteen to music videos by critically acclaimed directors such as Spike Jonze, Jonathan Glazer, and Michel Gondry, the selection addresses the distinctive roles of the performer and the director, thereby raising the question of authorship. Specific attention is paid to how the visual leitmotiv of walking functions differently in the selected music videos, including providing a contemplative sphere, emphasizing the song’s structure, and even representing an explicitly political act. By highlighting this particular visual leitmotiv, the larger questions of the character of the music video genre as both entertainment and art can be raised. Jaap Kooijman

INDUSTRY DAY SOUNDTRACK YOUR FILM Fri 16/3 – 10:00-12:30 – LUX 4
NBF Seminar Music and sound effects play an integral part in filmmaking, and can make or break your film. Music is seen as an essential component that adds expression to a film to a great extent. As a filmmaker you can choose to use existing music for your project, or have someone else compose a fitting score. But where do you find music that suits your film perfectly, and what are the costs? The seminar that is presented by the NBF in cooperation with Go Short focuses on how to find suitable music for your film. Professionals from the music and film industry will examine several inspiring examples. No matter how big or small the project may be, they know where to look, and what to expect. The speakers will include: Rogier van Twuijver (Epiqurus Agency) Twuijver has composed music for TVseries like CSI. Epiqurus is a globally operating DJ’s and producers agency, 14 GOSHORT/2012

MUSIC VIDEO – MEET THE FUTURE Fri 16/3 – 17:00 – Festival Pavilion The broadcasting days for music video have long gone. Yet the production quantity of music videos keeps growing. But what about the quality? Is music video still considered to be a playground for innovative filmmakers? We receive music video producers who have worked in the era of MTV, and the era of YouTube. Together they will discuss plans for the future, and will look for new channels and platforms.

MEESTERMAKERS Every year two renowned filmmakers meet in the Meestermakers program. At the previous editions of Go Short we brought together Paul Ruven & Danyael Sugawara, Gerrit van Dijk & Floris Kaayk, and John Appel & Karel Doing. They discuss their films, the way they approach a subject and their sources of inspiration during a public talk. During a masterclass they share their knowledge with other filmmakers. This year we welcome Ben van Lieshout (1951) and Bea de Visser (1957), two filmmakers who explore the boundaries between documentary and art.

GO SHORT STUDENT CAMPUS Our yearly campus is a meeting point for young filmmakers from all over Europe. Together with Breaking Ground, the European platform for student filmmakers, the festival hosts a six day program of workshops, masterclasses, filmmaking and fun. The campus will focus on the narrative strengths of sound in film. The lectures will be given by Michel SchÜpping, Fons Merkies and Mel Kutbay. Student directors, DOP’s and sound designers will work on a short film together, which will premiere at the festival.

NARRATIVE IN SOUND FILM Michel Schöpping will give a lecture on the sound in film narrative. Starting from the definition of film, he will turn his attention to what this means for the dimension of sound. Rich narrative examples of sound in film will be analyzed and discussed.
MUSIC AND POWER Fons Merkies, a film composer himself, will give a lecture about the impact of music on film. The effect of music on the narrative and emotional aspects of film will be analyzed. Music is a powerful stylistic device, but there’s a danger lurking: it has the potential to completely dictate the mood and interpretation of the public.
MEL KUTBAY: CREATING A WHOLE WORLD OF SOUND The unheard king of sound, Mel Kutbay, has created sounds for over a hundred films. Through an interactive workshop he will train students in the basics of foley art. Foley is the reproduction of everyday sounds like footsteps, slamming doors, creaking chairs and the sounds of trousers swooshing against each other. Because these sounds contribute so much to the realism of a film, the best foley art is rarely noticed by the public.
Go Short and Breaking Ground feel there is a need to give talented, aspiring filmmakers a chance to learn more about their profession, while incorporating the influences of various cultures and broadening their vision of international cinema. Are you a European film student who would like to attend inspiring lectures, motivational workshops and create films together with other young filmmakers from all over Europe? Next year there will be a new chance to join the Go Short Student Campus. Go to Breaking Ground’s website and subscribe to Breaking Ground’s Buzzing News to be the first to receive next year’s call for entry.
The Go Short Student Campus is co-produced by Breaking Ground, the platform for European Student Films. Visit them at: www.breakingground.eu GOSHORT/2012 19
EXTRAPOOL At Extrapool, international artists are invited to create, analyze and present work that defies classification and crosses boundaries. Just pop your head around the corner and see the facade of Extrapool come to life. Inspired by the giant mural of entangled downspouts, Ton van Rijswijk created a moving projection. Ton, a freelance animator, likes to use video mapping to give his animated characters freedom to roam. .

NIGHT OF THE LIVING PROJECTORS Fri 16/3 – 21:00 – Extrapool – € 7
TINA TONAGEL
ASTRID FLORENTINUS
Tina loves to explore different ways to use projectors as kinetic machines. She turns overhead projectors into real-time motion projection machines. The mechanical play with light creates beautiful abstract images.
Astrid has the power to surprise you with her live animations. Tucked away in a secret spot, or out in the open, she projects her pictures, while incorporating the movements and the sounds of the people and performers around her.
NINA BOAS
KLASKE OENEMA
Sometimes a gigantic woman, sometimes a very small girl, Nina draws big houses and puts her audience in small boxes, where she serves them tea from very big cups. Through video projections, live drawings and theatrical expressions, she creates a world where common gender and class distinctions are not discussed, but played with, inviting you to forget, laugh and reflect.
While animating live with simple tools, Klaske tells homey, poetic tales. She sits at a table with an overhead projector, on which she places paper cuttings, one by one. She sings and speaks like someone telling a story, while peeling potatoes or doing other household work.
GO SHORT AROUND TOWN DON’T BE SURPRISED IF SHORT FILMS POP UP IN OTHER WAYS AND AT OTHER LOCATIONS, AND NOT ONLY SCREENING ROOMS! COSYMO’S SOLAR CINEMA Thu 15/3 – 19:00-22:00 – Koningsplein CosyMo has travelled around Europe with her solar powered outdoor cinema. She returns to Go Short to pick up a fresh batch of shorts for the coming season.

They provide a fresh outlook on the program and select the winner of the Grote Broer / Lindenberg Youth Award. The winning filmmaker receives a € 1.000 prize.
EUROPEAN COMPETITION Emerge yourself in the latest, brightest and shortest part of European film culture. Due to Europe’s many languages, cultures, and cinematic traditions coupled with its starkly differing landscapes, soundscapes, and cities, the variety in European short films is enormous. We have chosen to present you this program in all its diversity. Even though this program of eighty shorts cannot encompass the width of the current trends in filmmaking, we do intend to give you a taste of it in every screening. In contrast to the previous festival editions, we have chosen not to present the fiction, animation, documentary and art films in separate screening blocks. Throughout this program you might still recognize a distinctly European flavor – filmmakers who are not afraid to construct their own ways of storytelling, building a cinematic language without using any prefabricated materials, some working from solid foundations and some even willing to explore unstable terrain.
We would like to thank our selection committee for their efforts in selecting a strong program from the 2153 entries. Go Short’s directors Lisa ter Berg and Kirsten Ruber and head of the program department Wouter Jansen selected this year’s shorts together with Dirk van der Straaten (De Balie, Amsterdam), Astrid Bussink (documentary filmmaker), Egbert de Ruiter (Utrecht School of the Arts), Manon Bovenkerk (ZAAL5, Filmhuis Den Haag), Tanja Koning (Discovery Festival, Amsterdam), Rosan Boersma (Rosan Productions) and Floor Adams (animator & illustrator).

A film about a man who has lost his soul. Many aboriginal tribes have believed that if someone takes a photograph of them they lose their soul. Without a soul, the person was doomed and could no longer be reborn.
A man and a woman practise the great embrace. Ardently they try to simulate the vibrant style of a Hollywood musical. “The tempting, the deceiving, the fleeting and the oppression of happiness eerily transformed into a theatrical work which cleverly and skilfully applies the language of film and its technology. A wordless, forceful film with a carefully arranged soundtrack – a miniature work of art”.

In stark whiteness or emptiness, a woman’s voice tells the story. The absence of visual images is all the more pregnant for the fact that the story revolves around a major news event. Everyone knows these images, we are inundated with them every day – but in this case there is also something very personal about them.

Sitting in a tavern, after having lunch with an old friend, a man remembers small stories of a childhood spent in a popular neighbourhood of Lisbon. A boy and a girl riding a speedboat all alone. Two drunken women having a blast of a time in their convertible. Two cops practicing their shooting abilities, while they wait for their car to get washed. They all meet in a gas station. Innocence meets sex and power meets itself. The local band pays a tribute to the victims of stupidity. An ironic subliminal message about the authority of violence and the violence of the authority.
Theta Rhythm is a detailed re-creation of one day of the 8th session of the Central Committee of the Communist League of Serbia through the perspective of the filmmakers’ father Mirko Fajfric (played by the filmmaker). Historians agree that this session represents a symbolic turning point that led to the rise of nationalism and wars in former Yugoslavia. Meticulous reconstruction culminated when the filmmaker inserted himself in the archive footage of the political sessions.
Framing the Other is about tourism and its complex relationships with indigenous communities. It reveals the intriguing thoughts of a Mursi woman from Ethiopia and that of a Dutch tourist as they prepare themselves for meeting each other. This ultimately results in an awkward encounter that is both moving and disturbing. Claes is a pensioner, whose greatest wish is to finally make it to the nearby cinema. What if it rains? What if his sweater doesn’t match the shirt he is wearing? Probably better to stay in the safety of his own home and switch on the telly. In the total isolation of his solitary life, and out of an entirely unfounded fear of stepping outside his flat, Claes has turned his tidy home into a prison. A film that demonstrates what loneliness can do to a person.
Ballet shoes may be worn by delicate girls, but they’re crafted by burly men whose hands tell another story... We delve into the world of professional ballet dancing seen through the eyes of a shoemaker who desperately strives to make the shoe as comfortable as possible.

Three teenage girls are heading home in their Mini Cooper S. They discuss their boyfriends, their boyfriend’s mothers, their boyfriend’s mother’s cars, and Judaism. DUTCH COMPETITION The Dutch Competition is a platform where we present twenty of the best Dutch films from the last 18 months. We are happy to see the audience for Dutch shorts growing, and getting actively involved! Last year CineCrowd has asked our audience to participate in new productions. Three films that were pitched at last year’s festival, are now part of this year’s competition: This is not a Dream (Amos Mulder), Code One (Rolf van Eijk), and Wednesdays (Aaron Rookus). We are delighted to see the growing willingness in supporting filmmakers, and we are happy to provide a platform. The twenty films in competition show a diverse picture of what is being made. Some directors look at what’s happening in the world with a critical view, some create a completely new world of their own, and others look at moments which could easily go unnoticed. There are still many stories that just need to be told.

Nine lives through the eyes of a cat. A large gray cat sits perkily in front of the hospital. An old woman comes up to him and strokes him. A tall man calls out for him. A little girl lures him with a treat. The cat is present every day, quietly looking around, winking. Since he first came, it’s hard to imagine the hospital without him. He is subject of conversation, makes people smile and offers consolation. ‘He’s a bit of a mascot for me’ says one woman as she lights her cigarette, ‘If he is there, I’m fine’.

What would happen if the future lands on our doorstep today? Let’s take mankind, add perhaps 100 years and then let them show up on our doorstep today. Sheeped Away tells the tale of a farmer who just wants to be with his beloved sheep. When a giant UFO enters his life to claim his sheep, what will he do to keep them safe from harm? And can he do this without waking his monstrous wife?
Large groups of tape rolls go through a long process of development and degeneration. Resulting in unpredictable shapes and movements that somehow feel familiar.
A documentary disguised as a music video. The film explores the increasing unease that many feel with modern society. We show this feeling through the eyes of ‘giant’ Carel Struycken, who has sharp observations on the way we live our lives and how we perceive one another. GOSHORT/2012 73

DANIEL MULLOY
“This is what drove me to become a filmmaker – wanting to get into the minds of the people that I was drawing when I was a kid, wanting to tell their stories.” GOSHORT/2012 75
IN FOCUS: DANIEL MULLOY In his still budding career, British filmmaker Daniel Mulloy has received over seventy nominations and many awards for his short films, including a BAFTA. He is now working on his first feature film, A Cold Day. At Go Short we present his short films alongside films by makers akin or inspirational to Mulloy. We had a short talk with Mulloy about these other and his own short films, and about what life is like for a succesful director on the festival circuit.
“
Film festivals have been a big part of my life in a way. Winning awards has helped me finance the subsequent films I made, so each film, to some degree, owes its life to a festival where the previous film won an award. And festivals are a place for me and other filmmakers to meet and discuss our films amongst one another. A place where you can learn a lot about other people’s films and, actually, about your own film as well. Because my films are quite open, there is always a lot of discussion with festival audiences. I like films when I feel that the filmmakers have been dealing with things they would feel uncomfortable having a conversation about. When you say something that means a great deal to you, you’re putting yourself on the line by discussing it. When you think, “Should I even be talking about this? Will this make me look like an assehole?”. This is the grey area that I like, where you’re not sure what is right or wrong, and you leave those judgments down to the audiences, if they choose to
76 GOSHORT/2012
make them. It’s important for me not to judge the characters in the film, but to feel compassion for all of them and not create goodies and baddies. I try to understand the reason behind why people are behaving in a certain manner, even when it seems disturbing. As a kid I loved drawing people. I would always be drawing. But still pictures didn’t give me enough of a capacity to create narratives of the people’s lives I wanted to become involved with. Now I create portraits through film, by looking at people in difficult situations and how they respond to each other. What drives people, their psychologies, their motivations, and what upsets them, I find all those sort of things really interesting. This is what drove me to become a filmmaker – wanting to get into the minds of the people that I was drawing when I was a kid, wanting to tell their stories. A key thing that I am looking for in the work I do is authenticity, the feeling that what is projected in cinemas is very immediate and real. When I am making a film, I often feel that as a director, I shouldn’t really be there, because much of what great actors do is so personal and intimate that it feels like watching is intruding. When I have that uncomfortable feeling, then I know that the material is really working.

Director: John Smith fiction / United Kingdom / 1986 / 35mm / 4’
A young woman witnesses a crime, its perpetrator follows her home.
“This four minute film explores our response to stereotypes – aural, visual and ideological. Smith signals these stereotypes to the viewer through a chiefly associational system, which deftly manipulates the path of our expectations. The structure is stunningly simple and deceptively subtle. We are taken on a journey from one concrete stereotype to its diametric opposite, as images transform and juxtapose to, ultimately, invert our interpretation of what we see and hear.” Gary Davis.

Daniel Mulloy about OM - John Smith This film did something to me that I really enjoyed. It is a joke, with a serious edge, which makes you reflect on your own preconceptions. It plays on the judgments you make, based on very little information. The video made me make massive decisions about the people I was watching, based on little visual clues. I found this really interesting and I think somehow, in some of my shorts I like to play with the audience’s expectations. This is interesting to do cinematically, because it can make people reexamine their own ideas and themselves. 78 GOSHORT/2012

Daniel Mulloy about Before Dawn – Bálint Kenyeres I thought it was a masterpiece, a very cinematic film. Even though it’s epic in scale, you get the sense that it is both universal and a very specific story of one man. You feel like you witnessed these twelve minutes in real time. It’s incredibly extreme and very serene at the same time, a mix of something that’s quite radical and quite understated. Extreme things in the mundane is maybe something that I relate to through my own films.
Daniel Mulloy about Undressing my Mother – Ken Wardrop I went to visit Ken and his producer Andrew Freedman in Ireland, and they took me to a cinema where Ken’s film was shown ahead of a feature film. I felt there was a real sort of honesty and vulnerability that he managed to get. There was something really beautiful in the intimacy and the honesty with which Ken’s mother spoke about her late husband. How that whole dynamic worked on screen was really interesting, it really touched me. GOSHORT/2012 79

POLISH SHORTS
Every year we put the focus on a new generation of filmmakers in one of the ´ European countries. This year we asked Zofia Scisłowska (Krakow Film Foundation) to put together two programs that highlight the new wave of Polish film culture. With great pleasure we present this program, composed of the most frequently screened and awarded films of the POLISH SHORTS Project. The selected documentaries, fiction and animated films demonstrate the quality of the Polish short cinema and show the features that make our films recognizable abroad. In the last years Polish short films have seen their visibility increased in the selections of the most important film festivals in Europe and worldwide. The six short films presented in the competition program of Go Short give us another reason to feel proud of Polish cinema. Poland has enjoyed a strong tradition in short filmmaking, which flourished at the turn of the fifties and sixties. Nowadays short films are mainly produced at long established film schools in Łodz´ and Katowice, but also at institutions established more recently such as the Wajda School. Another prolific producer is Munk Studio, set up to focus exclusively on producing directorial debuts, arthouse documentaries, fiction and animated films. Every film demonstrates the same high standards and storytelling qualities. I wish all of you an inspiring screening that I hope will encourage you to keep an eye out for Polish short films in the future. ´ Zofia Scisłowska POLISH SHORTS Coordinator 80 GOSHORT/2012
The Krakow Film Foundation was set up in 2003 to insure the stable development of the Krakow Film Festival. In 2007 it expanded through the creation of a film promotion agency, which runs three main programs: POLISH DOCS, POLISH SHORTS and POLISH ANIMATIONS. Making more than 350 festival screenings annually, the agency spreads the word about Polish short cinema, and helps filmmakers and producers make their first appearances at international festivals.

Living on welfare payments too small to survive on, in a tiny apartment with no hot water or gas, a single mother has no choice but to give her newborn to an orphanage. Six Weeks is an intimate and powerful short that documents a mother’s painful goodbye as her baby, along with so many other babies, awaits its future in a Polish orphanage.

Mariusz is fifteen years old and lives with his parents, brother and sister in Ruda Pabianicka. He attends junior high school, plays football, quarrels with his brother, practices boxing, wins medals and he weighs nearly fourty kilograms. This is the film about where the bounds are, whether they exist and what how much do they weight.
The protagonist of the film is a middle-aged man who, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, in almost total solitude, takes care of his ailing mother. Closed in the circle of simple, everyday activities, cut off from his family and life he led so far, he fills slowly the reality of the old woman whom he loves endlessly. What hurts him most is passivity of his relatives, the fact that their memory of the elderly, ailing woman is limited to objects and holiday postcards. .. Arcade Fire, Michael Jackson, Ben L’Oncle Soul and The Buzzcocks all have their turn on the big screen this year. Go Short looks beyond short film and pays special attention to music. Two great art forms that complement each other so well. It is easily taken for granted, but often music greatly colors your experience of a film. Go Short makes room for music shorts, music videos, and musicals. Even musicals can be more versatile than you might expect, including such subjects as being an illegal immigrant in France and being gay in Norway.
Besides the film programs, we offer lectures, concerts and parties filled with music. There will be panels and expert meetings for both film and music industry, including master classes by composer Michel Schöpping, sound designer Fons Merkies and foley artist Mel Kutbay. Pop professor Jaap Kooijman has put together a program of classic music videos, starting of with the Bee Gees’ Staying Alive, he will explore the sidewalk of music video history. At various film concerts and parties, music and video will pair off for your amusement.

Sigur Ros - Why Music Matters
Scenes from the Suburbs
Director: Olivier Treiner fiction / France / 2010 / HD / 13’
Director: Felix Massie animation / United Kingdom / 2010 / HD / 2’ / Dutch premiere

When Sigur Ros set out to make their second album they wanted to record it on top of the northernmost mountain in Iceland.
A group of suburban youths back then, in the summer, so long ago. They couldn’t leave town because outside the country was at war. The teenagers wander aimlessly about town. Winter is a long way off. And love, longing and friendship still mean – everything.
L’Accordeur

A spectacular and very real concert, powerful music for an audience composed primarily of the deaf and hard of hearing. Unrestrained and exultant dancing on the dance floor and on stage. Their movements speak the language of shared pleasure in the wild bass rhythms both under the stroboscopic lights and backstage.
“Hatred” is a loud metal band from Stirling with an average age of 10. The film follows their shambolic preparations for a big gig.
A story about a young man’s quest for love and acceptance, all in a lively musical film about being yourself and loving whoever you want. This is a film about forbidden and boundless love and the risk of losing everything when your choice is head on with the morally accepted.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL From the creators of the Boy Meets Girl Stories – a hugely popular collection of shorts – comes the sequel: Life is Beautiful. Taking the witty one-liner Adagia of Erasmus as their starting point, directors and writers Mark de Cloe and Jeroen Berkvens, spin short stories that reflect timeless truths and everyday wisdom. His wisdom-filled one-liners inspired them to make a series of alternating perceptive, poetic and fanciful short films. Combining a documentary-style approach with fictional elements, a series of 30 short stories celebrate the beauty of life’s everyday moments. This Submarine production will be screened continuously at Bibliotheek De Marienburg, Nijmegen’s central library, located next to LUX. Mark de Cloe and Jeroen Berkvens will visit the library on Thursday for an interview about their films.

48 HOUR FILM PROJECT After the success of the 48 Hour Music Video Project Nijmegen, new teams will now face the challenge of making a short film in only a 48 hour time period during the weekend before the festival. Make a film from scratch in just 48 hours! That is the challenge thousands of filmmakers participating in the 48 Hour Film Project have already accepted. In a hectic and sleepless weekend, the teams will write, script, shoot, edit, score and render a film. On Friday night, each team is given a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to be included in their film. The completed film must be delivered at the finish line on Sunday. Only a few days later, all completed films will be shown on the silver screen. No pressure – just a world premiere at Go Short in a venue chock full of friends, professionals, critics and visitors. A jury will decide the winner of the 48 Hour Award, who will then compete in the international final.
Through this worldwide competition, the 48 Hour Film Project encourages everyone to get out there and make films. The extreme time limit places a restriction on the filmmakers, but it is also liberating by putting the emphasis on actions rather than words. Two previous editions and a special music video edition have proven that there are many talented filmmakers just waiting to take up the challenge. The previous competitions sparked many new friendships and professional projects, and we’re thrilled to see what the results of this year will be. 48 HOUR 1: SAT 17 - 17:00 - LUX 4 / SUN 18 - 12:30 - LUX 1 48 HOUR 2: SAT 17 - 17:00 - LUX 5 / SUN 18 - 14:45 - LUX 1 48 HOUR AWARDS AFTERPARTY: SUN 18 - 17:00 - FESTIVAL PAVILION
