INDUSTRY DAY INDUSTRY DAY: LIFE IS SHORT. MAKE YOUR SHORT FILM COUNT!

POSSIBILITIES TO MAKE A SHORT FILM IN THE NETHERLANDS 10:30 – 11:30 / LUX 7 / Dutch spoken

BEST PRACTICES: TWO INTERNATIONAL CASE STUDIES 11:30 – 12:30 / LUX 7 / English spoken

What possible options are available for financing a short film in the Netherlands? We will present the survey we held among our Dutch entries for this year, in which we asked them how they funded their film and with what kind of budget they worked. We will talk about the results of this research and present the different options that are available. We will try to broaden the view. You don’t have to be dependent on traditional fundings; there are other options out there. We will talk with, among others, the Netherlands Film Fund, the Dutch Cultural Media Fund and producer Gijs Kerbosch from Dutch production company 100% Halal. This talk is moderated by Carolien Croon.

Two successful international short film projects will be presented as a case study. The directors will talk about how they made their film, touching upon all the different stages that include everything from funding to festival strategy. They will share tips and tricks on how to make your next project a successful one. Sahim Omar Kalifa will talk about his successful short film Baghdad Messi, which was shortlisted for the Oscars. Kalifa has won over 70 international awards for his short films. Gabriel Gauchet will talk about his short film The Mass of Men, a film that has won over 60 international awards at prestigious film festivals.

Friday 10/4, 10:00 – 17:30 You want your next short film to be selected for all the main European festivals.Where do you get the funding? How do you write a successful script? What options are available in Europe? How do you make your project attractive to an international market? What are programmers of the European film festivals looking for? These questions will be central to the fifth edition of the Go Short Industry Day, which is organised in collaboration with the NBF (Dutch Association of Film and television professionals), EYE International, Creative Europe Desk NL and the Netherlands Film Fund.

NEW ARRIVALS – GO SHORT CAMPUS Since the very first edition of the festival, the Go Short Campus has been a meeting point for filmmakers who are about to make the leap from the academy to the professional world. The New Arrivals - Go Short Campus brings emerging filmmakers and seasoned film professionals together and offers 20 young film professionals from all over Europe an unique and intensive program. The campus focuses on giving hands-on knowledge about everything that becomes important once you leave the academy. Matters that are hardly dealt with in school will now be foremost on your mind. How do I finance my (short) film? Where can I find an audience? How do I distribute my film? We offer master classes, lectures, workshops and panel discussions by the industry's top experts. For this year we will offer masterclasses by Yann Gonzalez (France) and Gunhild Enger (Norway), both of whom are filmmakers who made a name for themselves at a young age. 20

GOSHORT

Next to these masterclasses we offer workshops on a number of subjects, like: – Workshops on distribution: platforms and do-it-yourself – Workshop on the positioning and marketing of your film – Workshop on pitching your film idea to an audience or market – Panel talk with festival programmers – Round table sessions with producers The participants will receive assignments and challenges throughout the week, prompting them to mingle with other festival guests and expand their network. You might very well be part of their learning experience! When our 20 participants leave Nijmegen their portfolios will be filled with business plans, their address books with new contacts, and their suitcases with tools of the trade. The campus workshops are located in Vlaams Arsenaal, Arsenaalpoort 18.

CAMPUS PARTICIPANTS Tue 7/4 / 20:00 – 22:00 / closed setting Every student presents a film plan at the beginning of the campus and is then challenged to finance, promote, produce or distribute this film. As an introduction to the participants, we present their previous films at this session. All these films will also be available in our video library. “In my free time I like to watch a lot of films, at least three a week! I have never been to Go Short, but I expect to see surprising, beautiful and exciting new films. As a jury member I’ll focus on whether a film makes a good first impression; is it funny or thrilling?”

“I watch a lot more short films than feature films, for example on Youtube. I think there are going to be many good films at the festival and we will have lots of fun watching them. I will be paying most of my attention to the use of nice shots, but also to the content. Is there enough humor in it?”

“I live to tell stories, and preferably with film. Because with film you can introduce people to your fantasy, you can create a window to your world. And in that world, you are the boss! My focus as a jury member will be on the (powerful) way the story is being told.”

“I have never been to a film festival before and I expect to see films that won’t be available in normal cinemas. I also think we will have a great time! I think it’s very important in a film that everything is believable, including the acting.”

“When a film is too long, I can’t concentrate. So short films are perfect for me to watch! I think I see about four shorts every week. Being a jury member will be a great experience. A good film should have a nice build-up and music that fits the mood.”

EUROPEAN COMPETITION Never before did we receive this many films. From 43 European countries and 1 independent territory we received more than 2900 submissions. Our selection commitee chose 60 films for the European competition that showcases what we consider to be the best short films made in the past year.

Most of these are by filmmakers who are new to the festival. There are certainly some diamonds in the rough here, as we are not necessarily looking for filmmakers who can merely show that they are good at getting their funds and a professional crew together. We are looking for films that simply needed to be made, and for filmmakers who won't let anything get in the way of making them. We love to lend our ear to the voices that stand out in the crowd.

We would like to thank our selection committee for their efforts in selecting a strong program. This year’s shorts were selected by Go Short’s director Kirsten Ruber, head of the program department Wouter Jansen, Floor Adams (independent animator), Manon Bovenkerk (visual artist), Erik van Drunen (animation and film consultant), Bart Jansen (Beeldbuis Festival), Marlijn Klerk (documentary professional), Hasse van Nunen (documentary producer, Een van de Jongens), Tanja Koning (Discovery Festival Amsterdam), Wiepko Oosterhuis (distributor special films Submarine, art film & science curator) and Viktor van der Valk (director).

Eighteen years ago Wim suffered a cerebral infarction. Since then he suffers from what is called ‘locked-in syndrome’, which means that he is not able to talk or move. For the last couple of years he has been living at home, taken care of by his wife. To allow their mother a weekend off, the three sons, Will, Edwin and Bram, take over care by themselves. For the first time the four men are totally reliant on each other for days.

One summer in 1960s Norway, a seven-year-old girl asks her hopelessly out-of-touch parents for a bicycle, but the unconventional ways of these modernist architects soon prove to be a source of quiet embarrassment and anxiety for the young girl.

When 7 year old Leo and his little sister Annetta wake up in the morning, their mom Emma is sleeping. Or dead? Alone they have breakfast, they mess about, they play. They wait, they try their life without mommy. Until Gabriele arrives, her boyfriend, until grandma arrives. Until with adults and words, ambiguity loosens up, and each one finds his way towards the night.

A newly separated couple fight about who should take care of their 10-year-old son. A man desperately hunts for someone to share his life with. A young woman fights for her mother’s attention. Six animals meet at the swimming pool. The horse, the pool’s manager, is a dedicated, conscientious friend of order. Over the years the premises have become her whole world. Two wolves come to the pool to bathe. Their relationship is hard to define, but one wolf constantly wields power over the other. Three mice also visit the pool, but they have a different agenda altogether.

Drive With Care investigates the life of a teacher at an elite boarding school in the US. Utilising dry-humoured post-documentation of staged activity, Takala examines the boundaries within this particular community. The film explores faculty members’ strategies for survival as they negotiate their own space within the institution, finding loopholes while being careful not to violate shared rules.

It’s like soot that rests on the walls of our head. We can’t see it. It belongs there already. After all the time that was left behind one question remained: “Why didn’t the trains stop there?”

Two cosmonauts, two friends, try to do their best in their everyday training life to make their common dream a reality. But this story is not only about the dream.

Mia and Tim have been together forever ... at least it feels like that. In search for what has gone lost over the years, they invent a game - one has to help the other fulfilling each one‘s dearest desires. No matter what it is.

The Motordrome Dream

Dinner For Few

A Girl’s Day

Director: Andrea Kåberg, Adam Kåberg, Catharina Kåberg documentary / Sweden / 2014 / 28’ / international premiere

Director: Nassos Vakalis animation / Greece / 2014 / 10’

Director: Ziegler Rosa Hannah documentary / Germany / 2014 / 15’

Dinner For Few is an allegorical depiction of our society. During dinner, “the system” feeds the select few who consume all the resources while the rest survive on scraps. Inevitably, when the supply is depleted, the struggle for what remains leads to catastrophic change. Sadly, the offspring of this profound transition turns out not to be a sign of hope, but the spitting image of the parents.

An emotional and strongly subjective movie about the question of what “happiness” is. At 19, Yasmin is in search of her own happiness and trying to understand her life, as well as the difficult relationship with her mother, a former heroin addict. The film takes us into Yasmin’s everyday life, shows her clubbing the night away, and traces the steps of her effort to build a life for herself. . Production, Script: Rosa Hannah Ziegler / Photography: Matteo Cocco / Editing: Rosa Hannah Ziegler, Gerhard Ziegler / Music: Max Richter / Sound: Claas-Benjamin Berger

Dödsryttarens Dröm

Leif Lilja built his own motordrome and toured with it as motorcycle artist Berne Kenton in the 60s and early 70s. Back then a motorcycle show was a natural part of the markets right next to the fakir and the snake charmers. When he after a last season sold it, he almost immediately regretted it. Now, 40 years later, he finally got it back through a chance of luck and is determined to revive it! A distant provincial school is waiting for an official delegation from the Ministry. They’re about to bring a new school bell. This is not what the school needs though. Having shrunk throughout the years, it lacks two pupils to satisfy the governmental quota established for any school in the country to exist. The gift from the capital is a threat for the survival of the school.

Somewhere in the high mountains of Armenia, there lives a blind shepherd Khachik. In spite of all the adversities, he has set up a family and leads a quiet life, single-handedly herding his goats on the steep slopes. However, when it turns out that his only son is losing his sight too and has to move to Yerevan to attend a school for the blind, Khachik faces a dilemma.

In 2012, a peculiar beauty salon was opened in Szczecin. It is the only beauty parlour for women with cancer. It is run by two sisters, Joanna Wiszniewska and Jolanta Wiewióra, who know from their own experience how troublesome it may be for patients to visit to a hairdresser or a beautician. Their establishment is different. Clients have an opportunity to talk freely about their dreams and fears.

A man sentenced to death, an old lady, a hunter, a window cleaner, a captive cooker and an anorexic young girl. The stories of these people are told trought their relation to food. By sharing with them a moment from their meals, we can understand their relation to other people and their vision of the world. For many reasons, from their own decision or from which they suffer, they all eat alone.

The image pans slowly around a coastal moor, a neighborhood of silent villas and empty streets, a forest path in fading summer light. There are no witnesses to tell the stories of how it all ended. In this world, which at first seems only to reflect a recent emptying, black things move about, as if dying echoes of a cataclysm too terrifying to narrate.

Vincent and Diane, thirty-something Parisians, have decided to get married. Vincent brings her fiancée back to his home town but his family shows some hostility. A three-day-observation of a German military bootcamp.

In 2013, 11600 asylum seeks, most of them Syrians, arrived in Bulgaria, one of the poorest country of the European Union. My friends and family gave me funds so I brought them food and useful items during a trip to Sofia. This is how I briefly meet Berivan and her husband. We improvised this film in less than an hour.

Daphné ou la Belle Plante

As any pretty plant, Daphné buds, opens, fills with fragrance and loses leaves. But is never allowed pick. Combining animation and continuous shooting, Daphné or the Lovely Specimen is a documentary painting the portrait of an unchaste and sensitive woman who speaks to us first about her body then about her heart. The creature, struggling for existence in the natural world, journeys unceasingly to find its creator.

DUTCH COMPETITION This is where we harvest the short films grown on our own soil. We are glad to see that Dutch filmmakers are making headway internationally. The films that were part of this competition last year went on to gather lots of attention and praise at other international film festivals. We hope to contribute to this because we want this competition to be more than a profile of Dutch film making; we want it to be a springboard for filmmakers with a bold voice and a clear-cut identity.

There are some familiar faces here. Aaron Rookus, a previous winner of the Dutch award, presents his new film. Mees Peijnenburg won last year's Youth Award, and is represented by films in both the Dutch and the European competition. Amos Mulder and Job Joris & Marieke made it to the selection for a third time and Bram Schouw for a second time. Christian van Duuren is a newcomer here, although he is already a local household name because of his many distinctions at the 48 Hour Film Project in Nijmegen. Besides the VEVAM Go Short Award, all films in the Dutch competition are eligible for the Format Court Award. The Format Court Jury consists of Agathe Demanneville, Katia Bayer, Marie Bergeret, Adi Chesson, and ZoĂŠ Libault.

A family reaches boiling point during a pit stop on their way home from what might be their last holiday together. But the volatile cocktail of sweltering heat, restless hormones and suppressed frustration fails to explode, leading instead to reconciliation.

A cup falls and breaks into pieces. Every frame of this recorded movement is then translated into a ceramic layer. All the layers are then arranged vertically and glued together, forming a new object. As this new form emerges gravity starts to shift pulling the new object into destruction as well. This cycle repeats itself by translating destructive moments into higher dimensional forms.

YOUTH COMPETITION Our Go Short MovieZone Youth Jury is a group of five enthusiastic teens with a keen eye for film form a youthful counterpart to our international juries. They will pay close attention to ten shorts from the competition program and judge these by their own standards and expectations. Their jury tenure starts off with a crash course in judging and deliberating, and ends in the spotlight of the award show where they will present their award to the winner of their choice. The challenge will be to choose a winner from ten preselected films, which represent the wide variety of films screened at Go Short. They will watch EU1 Brothers & Sisters, which features films that show the imaginative point of view of children. Do our jury members recognize themselves in these short films? ReCuiem and Milky Brother are films about loss and grief. Me and My Moulton is an animation film that portrays children with odd parents. The beautiful Dutch documentary Nothing Left Unsaid is about three brothers that have to take care of their handicapped father in the way he used to take care of them. 62

Our Youth Jury will also view and judge NL2 Wish You Were Here. Mees Peijnenburg, who won the Youth Award during the previous edition of Go Short, is represented again with A Hole In My Heart. He has some tough competition from Blindly, which won an award at the Netherlands Film Festival, and from the Oscar nominated animation film A Single Life, the documentary If Mama Ain’t Happy, Nobody’s Happy, Meantime and All Those Sunflowers. This wide variety of films in both genre and country of origin will present a challenge to the jury’s assignment of coming to a joint decision. We look forward to hear how this young jury experiences and judges the shorts in this selection.

STUDENT COMPETITION From over hundreds and hundreds of entries, 20 student films have been selected for this competition. It’s not easy telling a story in an engaging manner, let alone being inventive, original and interesting while you’re doing it. Film by film, these young guns manage to do just that. There’s an impressive variety on display here. From thrilling shots going by at a murderous rate in Nocebo, to the determined rhythm of Washingtonia, which is in no hurry to tell its story straight up. Meanwhile Europe gets a thematic examination that touches 64

on forbidden love, revolution, family, duty, and just being who you are. The Offer shows us that duty to your family isn’t everything; then again My Dad teaches us that you live by what you’ve learned from your family. I Remember gives us a beautiful portrait of what it means to be young and to love, while All the Pain in the World and Among Us show us love that’s even hard to consider as such. As contradictions abound in this world, so they do in films. In making the small big and the big small, these filmmakers show that they have the

talent to weld these contradictions into personal stories that don’t just resonate on a personal level, but go much further than that. Curious? You should be!

After being a volunteer doctor at the frontline during the bloodiest days in revolutionary Kyiv, Tanya continues curing wounded people on Maidan. Meanwhile unannounced war with the Russian Federation breaks out on the eastern and southern Ukraine. She must go to the war zone again.

Through the usage of military drones we examine the state of mind of their operators and the binary possibility containing only victims and perpetrators. Based on salvaged footage from USAF assault on a Pre-Identified position and extracts from interviews with Israeli Air Force drone operators.

With the Joy and Merriness is a experimental documentary where we observe, through every day scenes, the degeneration of a society where the rise of technology leeds the population to the biggest dream of all men: immortality.

Washingtonia starts when the giraffes heart can no longer be heard. Washingtonia is an alternative name for Athens, a place where people, like animals, fall into summertime sadness because of the heat. Washingtonia is the only palm tree that its heart is not devoured by the red beetle. Because it’s heart is small and dry and no one likes small and dry hearts.

A Caça Revoluções

It all started with a picture taken in 1974 in Lisbon, just after the Portuguese Revolution. She, The Revolution Hunter, tries to enter in that picture as if she could enter into a time she didn’t belong and finally understand what it means to be part of a revolution or what it means to fight for a country. GUNHILD ENGER FILMMAKER IN FOCUS Life is short, and it seems that we are always rushing. But if you pause for a moment and look at what people around you are doing, you might just get the giggles. The silly things people do draw laughter mixed with vicarious shame. Gunhild Enger knows this better than anyone. The films of the Norwegian filmmaker are straightforward, honest and sincere, and that’s why they are comical and touching at the same time. Gunhild proved to be just as honest and open when we asked her some questions about her films. Your films are often comical, but it seems that the humor is coming from just looking at things everyday people are doing. That’s exactly what I am doing. It is also very important that I look at myself in this way. I do all these stupid things myself as well. I see myself reflected in all of my characters; I am not only the nice ones, but the stupid ones as well. In the case of Premature a lot of people think I am the son, but I am probably the mother as well. I definitely have a mother like 76

GOSHORT

this; I think everyone has this mother. Self-insight is a major ingredient in my way of working. It can be a bit painful to admit that you can be that stupid. So far I haven’t dealt as much with fantasies as I have dealt with the ugly truth. Is it because you’re dealing with ‘real life’ that your films often stay close to ‘real time’? There are a lot of films which are slow and with a lot of silence; it is genre in a way. There’s a lot to be said for silence. Often things are dealt with a bit too quickly. That’s when you lose the humor.

The world is so absurd, but in many films it is made to be very logical. I am quite aware that life takes time, and it’s not very often that it is presented to you in a perfect dramatic curve. So what is your reaction when we say: “Life is Short”? It is interesting how the big questions of life are hidden in so many small details. What we are all about is sometimes very easy to see in the small arguments that we make. It doesn’t need to be a big thing, but it can say a lot about me. That’s something that short film does.

GUNHILD ENGER So is short film your weapon of choice? It’s not just the shorter format that leads you into the longer format. I intend to make a feature film, several hopefully, but I want to keep on making shorts. I often think of longer stories in terms of a number of short films patched together. I think it can be difficult to think of a long story that is good and important enough at the same time, so I think in episodes. Premature and Subtotal could very well have been episodes in a longer story. In Subtotal I had an idea that started in the parking lot of a shopping mall. I could have started another story there, and it would have been completely different. There could have been many different stories, all starting at the same point. It has been done before, but the point is that there are so many different stories that could happen in this space, it’s kind of endless. At Go Short we will be screening your films like episodes in a retrospective. Have you ever experienced this? I have never seen my films back to back and I hope it will be interesting. I can kind of see that my four latest films are really linked. You have to be an

exhibitionist to be a filmmaker. Obviously you’re willing to sacrifice a hell of a lot to get your view on society and life shown and viewed on the big screen. There’s an element of selfishness there, so let’s just be honest and assume that I’ll be proud of myself. You will also be here as a coach for the Student Campus. Would you advise them to be a bit selfish? The most important thing, and I know this is a huge cliché, is just do what you want to do. Earlier in my career I thought there was a right way to do things that I didn’t know about yet, but would get the hang of later on. Now I know that I never really knew how to make a film, which proved to be a big advantage. I didn’t go to a traditional film school that simply handed me this knowledge. I had to figure it out myself. I like to think that this is my advantage, although I can’t really say what it is that I do; I have my own logic, and so far this has been good enough. So don’t do what you think is the right way. You should do what is right for you.

Passion is a film about a middle-aged, married couple and their search for what used to be.

Premature tells the story of Norwegian Martin and his pregnant Spanish girlfriend, Lucia. We follow the pair during their first 15 minutes on Norwegian soil, observing Lucia’s first encounter with this new culture and her in-laws. The film depicts a car trip full of social tensions, expectations and misunderstandings.

Ing-Marie and Carl are very busy. She with training, he with gardening. They surround themselves with gadgets designed to make their lives simpler, but all they really do is cause more problems. It is summer, the sun is shining, the machines are running while she works out and he mows the lawn. But life isn’t necessarily any easier. A humorous reflection on a hot late summer’s day.

Director: Hu Wei fiction / France / 2013 / 16’

A young photographer and his assistant suggest to Tibetan nomads to take their picture. Against diverse and more or less exotic backgrounds, families appear to the photographer. Through these shots, the photographer will weave unique links with each of the various villagers.

Who has not - particularly as a child - dreamed now and then of playing God, of sitting for a while in the Great Director’s chair in the sky? The maker of this film plays with this desire using a role-reversal trick. Filmmaker John Smith constantly gives directions over images produced by a static camera: “Now I want the man on the left to cross the street,” etc,. giving the impression that the seemingly random London street scenes have been deliberately created.

The morning after the night before, a rapid spiral of disastrous telephone calls chart the certain ruin of young Phil’s day as he attempts to fib his way out of one scrape after another. It’s told entirely in animated captions.

GOSHORT

Three countries rubbing shoulders, perched between the Baltic Sea and Russia. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have in common that they left the Soviet Union at the same time and joined the European Union together. These three countries also have completely unique cultures, which we know so little about. There's so much to discover here! In Baltic Shorts we have put together some remarkably good fiction and animated films from the past few years.

"We are going to make a difference!" That's what the young people are saying, yet at the same time they still live with their parents. In Baltic Rebels the youthful spirit is not only part of the subject matter; it is also reflected in the smooth style of the new generation and in the humorous tone.

The family unit is still very important in Baltic society. If all else falls apart, family ties grow even stronger. Baltic Family consists of a number of impressive and gripping films about the bonds between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters. Working, travelling and relaxing: these are everyday elements that are the same all over the world, but have a unique cadence wherever you go. Experience everyday life in Baltic Days!

When Miina is caught shoplifting, the female officer truly uses her chance to show off her contempt. Surprisingly, both women meet a few hours later in a situation where the previous rivals become partners in crime.

On a misty sea drifts a lonely boat. While unseen danger lurks in the fog, the boat’s motor is out of order and visiblity is as clear as the relationship between the two men sitting in the boat. Do they get out of the mist? Or is it already too late?

The film tells a story of miscommunication between mother and daughter, where fear to confront reality leads to tragic consequences.

GENERATION I FOCUS ON OURSELVES Is there anything we can say about our own generation, or are we more diverse, more individualistic and more elusive than ever? Give it a try. How do you describe your generation? How would you describe your own identity? It’s not that easy at all. We have present you a number of filmmakers to see what they find striking about our society. Nothing is as personal as identity, and this is reflected in the very different subjects of these films. Who’s looking at you makes you who you are. The enormous popularity of the selfie and reality shows makes it clear that we want to be seen. At the same time we try hard to distinguish ourselves from the masses. Independence and "doing your own thing" are highly appreciated values. How do you show your level of independence when you still depend on the approval of others for your happiness? These topics are explored in the films of Generation Selfie. 90

GOSHORT

In Generation Community we look at the desire to be part of a group and the rise of individualization. Could they be two sides of the same coin? If individualism increases even further, soon everyone will have a one-person subculture. Is this why we love to lose ourselves in festivals and other mass events? Nowadays we are always connected, and everyone is trying to relate to others. Has the time come for Generation Offline? Will more and more people choose to go off the grid? Are the character traits we’re born with and the way we’re raised enough to form our identity?

GENERATION I TALKS + PEEPBOX

GENERATION I HARD // HOOFD TALKS Generation I will make you put your mind to work, and that’s what they love at hard // hoofd. This online magazine for art and journalism will present three ‘offline’ columns to go with the screenings. The following writers will be at Go Short festival to present their columns: Derk Fangman – Generation Selfie As a little boy Derk Fangman (1986) was able to talk sooner than most of his peers. ‘Meeuwvogel’ was his favorite word, something he scored with multiple times. From that period on he decided to slow down a bit. He is currently researching history. As history takes very long, so does his study period. He writes short stories every now and then to kill some time.

Kasper van Royen – Generation Community Kasper van Royen (1983) studied Philosophy and is active as a freelance philosophy teacher. Besides his teaching job, he writes columns, short stories and poems. Recurring themes are the absurdity of daily life, his paternity and his social awkwardness. He is a regular columnist of the online magazine hard // hoofd and is working on his first novel. Rutger Lemm – Generation Offline After finishing secondary school Rutger Lemm (1985) started writing for several (online) magazines. Besides that he studied History and a bit of Philosophy in Amsterdam and Berlin. In the beginning of this year his first book was published, entitled ‘Een grootse mislukking’ (‘A grand failure’). In the meantime he used to be active as a stand-up comedian, but currently he is mostly working as a freelance journalist. One day he hopes to combine comedy and interviews like his hero Jon Stewart does, but then combined with a touch of Dutch absurdism.

PEEPBOX STORIES BY HARD//HOOFD On Friday and Saturday the two lovely ladies from Peepbox Stories are present at the festival site to interview you about your personal memories. Your personal memories will be viewable for other festival guests in a personal peep box that will walk around the festival area. As a festival guest you can take a peek into this box and see and hear what your fellow festival visitors have to say! Intimate, sneaky and innocent!

If Mama Ain’t Happy, Nobody’s Happy

Director: Michael Almereyda documentary / United States / 2013 / 15’

Director: Jona Honer documentary / The Netherlands / 2013 / 27’

Director: Mea de Jong documentary / The Netherlands / 2014 / 25’

In this short film directed by Michael Almereyda, Killip presents a group of mostly unpublished photographs from the 1980s, taken in and around the village of Skinningrove, in North Yorkshire, and recalls his relationships with the subjects. Almereyda, who has known Killip since 1991, interviewed the photographer for Aperture magazine in 2012 to discuss a retrospective of his career that had been organized in Essen, Germany.

Pieter, a 56-year-old writer, suffers from a personality change caused by the brain damage inflicted by a tumour. His wife Annette must learn to live with her new husband. Filmed before, during and after Pieter’s brain surgery I shows us how fragile our personality is and how closely it is connected with our physical brains.

“If you want to make a film about independent women, shouldn’t you make a film about our family?” And so mother and daughter embark on a journey together to make a portrait about the four generations who all managed without a man. A mysterious family tradition slowly emerges. One the mother is proud of, but the daughter has her doubts.

YANN GONZALEZ RETROSPECTIVE Obsessions; every filmmaker needs them. It is the driving force of creativity, a force greater than yourself. Yann Gonzalez is happy to be a slave to his obsessions. He is a fan of sleazy pulp movies and great music and is a self-proclaimed sex maniac. You can see, hear and feel this in all his films. So we asked him, isn’t life too short for all the things you love to do?

I have such an appetite for everything, for films, for books, for music. So yeah, I think life is too short to embrace everything. I want to make as many films as possible and I think my life is too short for all the films I want to make. Especially because I am kind of lazy, I like to take my time. I wish I could live for 200 years, but I guess I just have to speed up. So could you say there’s a distinguishable Gonzalez style of films? I am trying to do something different every time. The screenplay I am writing now is for a horror film set in the 70’s gay porn industry. It’s about

98

GOSHORT

a female producer who’s crazy and alcoholic and in love with her editor. All her actors are being murdered by a serial killer. It’s the first time I am working on a horror film, and it’s important for me to be faithful to the genre. I really want it to be scary, and this is the main challenge; for it to be scary and emotional at the same time. Making a feature film is a long process and sometimes you lose energy when writing the screenplay and getting the funds. That’s why I am going to make another short film after I finish my screenplay. I really need to shoot something before the end of the year!

SHORT FILM SPECIALS You seem to be very close to actors and other people you collaborate with.

From that first film to your last, kissing seems to be an obsession to you.

I feel quite fragile on the set. When I am working I am always full of doubt about everything, so it is very important to have some people there that I know. It’s like building a family. We understand each other, we don’t have to talk for two hours before shooting a sequence. Especially with Kate Moran, it’s like telepathy – she really understands what I am looking for and she does it perfectly. Although I have worked with her a lot, I keep fantasizing about her in different characters, different moods, different outfits. But she’s not like a doll, she’s a muse.

Kissing is a way to get to know somebody. Sometimes you know more about someone when you kiss him then when you talk to him, because there’s truth in a kiss. It can be a violent kiss, it can be an awkward kiss, it can be a funny kiss. It tells a lot about my characters. I try to shoot as many kisses as I can, and I want every kiss to be different. I think it’s very cinematic to shoot a kiss; it’s beautiful. I want my kisses to be powerful and meaningful. To me it’s like talking, I don’t have to think about different kinds of kisses; it’s natural.

So what’s your current obsession? Now I am really obsessed with Grand Guignol. It’s an old theater from Paris in the 20s with stage plays full of special effects. It is very grotesque and very funny at the same time. I would really like to make a short film about one of these stage plays. Yann Gonzalez will be present at Go Short as a special guest and will coach the participants of the New Arrivals Go Short Campus with Gunhild Enger.

FILM CONCERT

FRI 10 – 22:30 – LUX 5

The combination of live music and short film visuals has become a recurring part of the Go Short program. This year Frank Boeijen (Grimm Limbo) & Peter Johan Nÿland (Distel/ Hadewych), two successful music producers from Nijmegen and guitarist Rense Slings (Automatic Sam) play a live score for a selection of short films. The vibe of the short films is dreamy and imaginative and fits well with the style of the musicians. Both the producers draw their inspiration from 80’s electronic pioneers and new wave music; they also have a predilection for gloomy atmospheres. Their respective output is very different from one another however. While Grimm Limbo heads for the electro dance floor, Hadewych goes for an industrial ambient vibe. Add some guitar to the mix and this can only result in a very dynamic musical dialogue when these three musicians are confronted with our short films.

It's all about the cats From viral hits to works of art, these are some of the finest feline films. We bring you this special in co-operation with the Walker Art Center Minneapolis and Vienna Independent Shorts, organizer of the Cat Video Festival Vienna. What do art and cats have in common? Henri, le chat noir, has answered this question already: “A cat is a work of art on its own.” Not only cat lovers are inspired by our fluffy friends, filmmakers like David OReilly and musicians like Björk are stimulated as well. We are going to present a selection of short films and music videos with cats in the leading parts. The second part of the program deals with one of the most popular pop culture phenomena: cat videos (they are everywhere!). No other kind of home video gets posted as often on Facebook and YouTube as cute kittens doing funny things. And we all know, they deserve nothing less than a leading part because no human can ever break the iron will of

a cat. They defy gravity, ignore the rules of decent behavior and make the world their own and special playground.

GO AHEAD Meet the Dutch filmmakers of tomorrow.

Go Ahead features the works of Dutch film students in the first, second and third year of Dutch academies and film schools. We’ve scouted films at Dutch film schools and selected the best six films. Many short films are produced here as assignments and then soon forgotten, as new projects take up the students’ time and screening opportunities are scarce. It would be a shame for some of these films if they never go beyond the classroom beamer, since they have a lot of international potential. Go Short offers 112 GOSHORT

these students the opportunity to screen their films at an international festival. This is an opportunity that they usually don’t get until they have made their graduation film. The creative process of the students will be discussed in short interviews after the films are screened; these will also offer an interesting peek into what goes on behind closed doors of Dutch academies.

Six films offer a first glimpse of tomorrow’s talented filmmakers. The films are by students at the School of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), the Netherlands Film Academy (NFA) and the School of Fine Art and Design St. Joost. Different genres like documentary, art and fiction are all represented. Though their talents may take different forms, they have all been selected because of a distinct approach or well developed style. All we can say to them is to go full steam ahead!

SUPPORTING FILM: VOOR FILM When our festival ends, our mission doesn’t stop! We really want short film to be seen on the big screen more often. That’s why we started a project a few years back to bring back the tradition of the supporting film, a short film screened before a feature. The supporting films we select are screened year round in 14 Dutch cinemas and last year reached an audience of over 150,000 visitors. Because of the success we decided to take it to the next level and ask a producer to make a film specifically for the project. Douwe Dijkstra, who received a special mention for Démontable last year, produced Supporting Film. We loved working with him, and asked him how he loves to work.

Supporting Film / Voor Film Douwe Dijkstra / documentary / the Netherlands / 6' 120 GOSHORT

SHORT FILM SPECIALS

Interview with filmmaker Douwe Dijkstra I'm a bit of everything. An animator, a filmmaker, a bricoleur. I always use a combination of filmed images and computer post processing. I use the computer mainly for collaging. I cut things out and put them back together in a different manner, using a lot of green screens in the process. I'm not someone who works with a big set and a large number of actors, nor someone who just shoots it and bags it. When I film something I intend to do something different with the parts. In the film industry it is common to work in a very methodical manner: think of a story, script it, make a storyboard for every shot. This is for a practical reason: filmmaking is usually teamwork so a clear plan is necessary. But another reason is that there is a lot of money involved, so funders want to know what you're going to do on a shot to shot basis. I prefer to work independently and in a more exploratory way. If you want to work independently, you just have to do everything yourself, in your own environment, with your own resources. I don't need a big studio and an expensive camera. Other filmmakers will start with

a brilliant idea and then work on it until there's nothing left. I prefer to act immediately when I have a bad idea, and then mess around until it results in something that works or fascinates me. That's just what I did with Démontable. I locked myself in my studio for two months with a small green screen and film equipment. In there I worked with the things that were on my mind at the time. Especially prevalent were the images of war; something which contrasts so sharply with your daily life yet is ever present in the news, in movies and on television. Démontable was initially created as a museum installation, where visitors could stand between the screens and helicopters and bullets would fly around you. When I adapted it to a short film it gained a much wider audience through its successful film festival run. Because the film was well received, you stand out and new assignments follow. I accept some assignments to be able to invest in making independent films. That’s how I increase my possibilities to do projects from which I draw fun and inspiration.

Go Short invited several filmmakers to submit a plan for a supporting film, and my pitch was chosen. My idea was to ask people with very different backgrounds and opinions about the ways in which they experience films. I used the resulting audio and then worked on accompanying images. This approach allowed me to work in a very inquisitive manner. The framework is clear, but the outcome of the interviews is always a surprise. I went to visit film buffs from 6 to 60 years of age, including religious people who don’t want to watch films, and a blind woman who only listens to films. This produced such a wealth of material that the biggest challenge was to reduce the hours of interviews into a film of six minutes. There were still a lot of great quotes left I just didn’t want to shelve, so I have also created a longer version which will premiere at Go Short. The long version of Supporting Film is part of NL1: Out of the Ordinary and the short version of the opening Program. The short version is also screened in 14 Dutch cinemas during the month of April.
