On my 72nd birthday this year, I was surprised to see a social media post that made me feel incredible. The post said that I was an "icon." I was so flattered, and I really started to think about what an icon is. In my eyes, I don't consider myself an icon. True "icons" are the people behind the scenes, the ones you may never know exist. The icons in my life start with the amazing team at Showstopper's national headquarters who work so hard and care so much to make each show perfect. They are our truck drivers who drive all week through tough situations, driving day and night to bring stages and sparkles to dancers around the country. They are the crew at the shows who work 60-hour weekends celebrating talent and dance and giving it a space to shine. The icons are the dance teachers—without them there would be no Showstopper. They are inspiring young dancers and changing the world for the better every day. These people are the true icons who I love and respect—everyday role models, leaders, and doers who make all the magic happen. They're the people we should celebrate. They're the people who make life, and the dance world, one big party.

You know Showstopper has been dancing with you since 1978, but you might not know how all of the pink and glitter got here. As we celebrate Showstopper’s 45th anniversary of dance, competition, and talent, we have to look back on where it all began and the steps it took to continue to make dance something to celebrate. In 1967, at just 16 years old, our founder, Debbie Roberts, was in Battle Creek, Michigan working with Civic Recreation to create extra programs for underserved communities. She wanted to start a dance program—she ended up creating dance programs for seven elementary schools in her area. At the end of that first year, the kids in the programs wanted to do something big, so Debbie worked with W.K. Kellogg II (of Kellogg’s Foods) to create a prize pool for a talent competition. She also thrifted and painted a trophy for the first place award and gathered a panel of judges. This was Debbie’s first dance competition, but it was far from her last. In 1978, Showstopper would follow in the footsteps of that first Design: Holly Childs, Nikki Herr • Writing: Veronica Good
dance competition. After years of watching her son, Adam, play competitive sports and knowing the excitement that getting to show their skills brings children, Debbie wanted to give the dance world the same experience. That first year, Showstopper—named by Debbie’s then 8-year-old daughter Angel—held six competitions, with a Finals in New York City, funded by Debbie’s savings and driven by her determination. INTRODUCING: CREA8 Michael hopes that his current project, a hip hop focused dance convention called CREA8, will help shape the dance world. “I want to bridge the gap between social media and dance and show that we can all enjoy dancing together,” he explained. “I hope this event allows other dancers to be able to connect with industry professionals and empowers them to continue to follow their dreams and pursue their passions.” While CREA8 will have incredible teachers–including the Kinjaz, the Future Kingz, Meet the Rods, a few choreographers from the Chaos faculty, and Michael himself–helping dancers to develop their craft is not his only goal. “I want to show [dancers] the ropes and how they can start their own dance career,” he explained. "I want to bring all the social media [hip hop] dance leaders together for the very first time [and] give everyone the opportunity to grow and learn."

shared. "We go to cool places for the videos sometimes, and we get to go to different events and eat weird things and stuff. I think it's so cool doing it with my family!" FINDING A BALANCE Everleigh said that balancing being a kid, a dancer, and a social media influencer comes down to one simple thing: she loves it! “Sometimes it’s a lot of team hours for dance,” she explained, “but I think dance and YouTube are both so fun. I love it! I love when I get home from dance and my parents are filming something really fun and surprising me! So I love it all! I have a really fun life.” While she does help to come up with ideas for content, her family makes sure to protect her in the process. “I can’t be on social media unless my mom or grandma are sitting with me,” she revealed. “My mom has to give another parent permission for me to be in my friends TikToks.” HANDLING FAME Being a kid and a social media influencer can come with its challenges, but Everleigh takes it all in stride. With such a large following, though, she’s often recognized by other dancers. She loves connecting with her audience, but she does set boundaries to ensure it doesn’t become too much. “The only thing I don’t like is people asking me for photos when I’m trying to focus before going on stage at a dance competition,” she shared. While she doesn’t always say yes, she tries to as much as possible. She loves when little kids get excited and
ask for a photo and told us “[she] always know[s] that it makes their day and that kids get really happy.” From balancing school and dance to traveling and creating content with her family for social media, Everleigh has managed to maintain a positive attitude and inspire others to pursue their passions. With a bright future ahead of her, we can't wait to see what Everleigh will accomplish next. Keep an eye out for her new YouTube channel where she'll make videos with just her dad as well as a super exciting dance-related project coming in few months!

Lizzo is known for being multi-talented. One of her many skills is playing the flute! A classically trained flautist, Lizzo has been practicing hard since she was 12. (She shared with Vanity Fair that she wanted to “be the best…flute player ever.”) We know and love Lizzo, but the instrument behind the music is none other than Sasha Flute. An instrument with an Instagram account (@sashabefluting) and an amazing best friend, Sasha has performed alongside Lizzo on Ellen and even Live in Los Angeles. More recently, Sasha went with Lizzo to the Library of Congress when the superstar performed James Madison’s 200-year old crystal flute. She also makes a statement, rising up out of the stage during Lizzo’s Special Tour performances!
