STUCK IN A STAGE

By: Shannan Lewis-Blair

“Why don’t you just grow up and act your age?” is a common rebuke used by people in response to perceived immature behavior by those they love. How many times have we found ourselves interacting with others, expecting a certain kind of conduct, only to be blindsided and disappointed by their seeming lack of sensitivity, pro-activity or ingenuity? Unfortunately, many of us find ourselves playing adult ‘games’ and engaging in precarious lifestyle choices that we should have outgrown in our early youth. The observation of such immature and inappropriate behavior (which often stems from insecurities or unwillingness to let go of old wounds), causes us to wonder if real growth will ever take place and ponder the consequences that could occur.

A friend made a statement that resonated with me, “God does not want just visiting hours with His children; He wants FULL CUSTODY!!!” The truth of the matter is, many Christians only visit, or call on God when there is trouble, hard times, barriers, or when they are seeking answers. Simply put, God is asking for full custody, not temporary visitation to fit our needs. To put custody in a carnal perspective; typically, children from broken families, foster homes, or divorce yearn for a relationship, love, comfort and affection from parents, not just an occasional timed scheduled event. This is the same guardianship God longs to have with His children. More often than not, the root cause for people shunning relationships with God is lack of desire, time, or the belief of solving one’s own problems. The misnomer that an occasional prayer and thanksgiving is all that is needed to have a relationship is far from the truth. These idiotic thoughts drive a wedge deeper between God and His children.

T

he true question is “Are you willing to relinquish your all to God” and not a parttime affiliation? Time and time again, people find themselves attempting to do things on their own, opposed to surrendering or allowing God the Father, just as a parent, to have full custody. Remember, God has an open schedule where we can call out to Him at any time. It is His desire for us to allow Him full custody; however, we must open the door to allow Him the opportunity. Once you hand over your life, God becomes the navigator, provided you give him total control. In this new state of living with Jesus Christ, will all troubles go away? No. Will things become easier? Sure. 8

www .G ospel Now. Net

Will some of your desires be granted? In God’s time they will. At the end of the day, you need to remember God’s Word that states He will not leave or for sake us, and by relinquishing yourselves to God, “He will show His ways, teach the right paths to travel, as well as Guide in His truth.” Psalm 25:4-5 NIV As simplistic as this devotion reads, so can your quest to a new life begin. It is your call. Do you want just visiting hours, or can you let go and allow God full custody of your life? You choose! Be encouraged.

LOVE & EXERCISE

WHAT DOES LOVE HAVE TO DO WITH EXERCISE?

I

f you love yourself and your mate, then exercise for love! Flowers, chocolate and dinner are great for romancing your mate. According to the American Council on Exercise, regular exercise can heat up the bedroom as well. The physical benefits of exercising together can literally transform the way you see yourself and your partner. Exercise can enhance self-image and confidence – You become more conscicious of your appearance and are less inhibited.

discover how to communicate with one another to stay motivated and follow through on your exercise routine. You learn how to successfully encourage each other to push through tough workouts.

Exercise improves mood and stress instantly – The body releases several hormones while exercising. Adrenaline is a hormone that is released which increases awareness. Endorphines are called a “feel good hormone” which can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. A vigorous workout can also increase testosterone levels in men and women. This hormone has a significant impact on men’s health and can increase sexual desire in men and women.

Exercise is a psychological and physical strengthening experience, but it can also strengthen your relationship. Choose exercises that you both can enjoy. Set goals together. Create a regular and consistent exercise plan that you can do together. Some suggestions are: brisk walking, jogging, hiking, lifting weights and stretching together. These are all great ways to strengthen the heart, lungs and muscles while releasing hormones that will enhance your selfimage, mood and sex drive. So, Love and Exercise! Enjoy a long and healthy life together!

Exercising together can enhance your sensuality and communication – Sensuality can be discovered through the power of mind-muscle connection. Mind-muscle connection is developed by performing strength building exercises and stretching. You also

A

woman’s health is critical to the growth and development of her family and community. She is not only the glue that holds her family together, but she is the incubator of future generations. Researchers find that the health of families and communities is tied to the health of women, ( i.e. the illness or death of a woman affects the health of her children, family and subsequently her community (GHC, 2010)). Women who are not healthy have increased incidences of chronic diseases and poorer birth outcomes.

• In Florida, women are two times more likely to die from coronary heart disease and suicide, and to be uninsured as compared to women of other states? • In Florida, African-American women are three times more likely to die from diabetes and be

14

www .G ospel Now. Net

obese than their White counterparts? • If a woman is not healthy before she gets pregnant, the likelihood of her having a premature baby increases? Prematurity is the leading cause of infant deaths and African-American babies are two times more likely to die than White babies. So, what can we do as a community to increase the survival rates of our beloved mothers, wives, sisters and daughters and improve birth outcomes? Encourage every woman to: take folic acid, increase her exercise levels, eat healthy foods, and get her annual check-up. A woman’s health is a matter of life and death. The Orange County Healthy Start Coalition is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal child health through community partnerships. To learn more about women’s health, join us on February 25-26, 2011 at the Spirit of Deborah Women’s Leadership Conference or call 407-741-5243 for more information.

BEATING THE COLD & FLU SEASON BY CORLIS RENEE JOHNSON,PHARMACIST, FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER

If you have passed a pharmacy or drug store recently, I’m sure you have seen posters and signs urging you to “Get your flu shot here!” Well, no thanks. It’s ridiculous. Nature provides us with everything we need to fight the flu, and I’d rather get a “shot” of vitamin D or an herbal extract any day than bother with a useless flu shot. There are several supplements beneficial to supporting a healthy immune system as well as addressing cold and flu symptoms. However, today I would like to provide an overview of powerful herbs and nutrients to keep you healthy all winter long, as in addition to preventing colds and flues. And if you do become sick, these supplements will relieve symptoms so you will feel better – fast.

What the immune system does and how to support it

T

he immune system acts like an army or police force to protect us from the viruses, bacteria, fungi, microbes, toxins and parasites that can invade our body. Major components of the immune system include the thymus gland, spleen, lymph system, bone marrow, white blood cells, antibodies, and hormones. This is a complicated system, but what you need to remember is that your immune system is like a muscle. Every time it is exercised against a cold or flu virus, it gets stronger and better able to handle the next bacteria or virus it encounters. For everyday use during cold and flu season, I recommend powerful botanicals such as elderberry, black currant, olive leaf extract along with a combination blend of bayberry, cayenne, chamomile, Chinese licorice root, echinacea, fennel seed, ginger root, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, parsley, red clover, reishi mushroom, cardamom fruit, and shitake mushroom for prevention and defense. I like to recommend multi-vitamins containing zinc, selenium, along with a good probiotic. The common cold is very common – some estimates put the number at about 1 billion people who suffer from colds each year. And every year, up to 1 in 5 people get the seasonal flu. Natural ingredients are extremely effective against colds, upper respiratory infections, coughs, and 16

www .G ospel Now. Net

even gastrointestinal complaints; and can make a huge difference in how quickly you recover, or even whether you get sick at all. And while a cold itself might not be dangerous, it can lead to something much worse and potentially life threatening: bacterial infections like pneumonia and bronchitis.

Thymus Gland and the Immune System

Most of us probably don’t think about the thymus gland or spleen at all; but maybe we should. Since the early 1960s, research shows that the thymus has a central role in the immune system. You can give the thymus gland the boost it needs with a combination formula of beta-carotene, cabbage, horseradish, parsley, red clover, rose hips, and wheat grass. It can provide a highly effective nutritious formula to support the immune system.

Stay well this season with Natural, Safe and Effective Ingredients!

Coming into cold and flu season, it’s important to remember the natural ingredients that can help you and your family to stay healthy or recover quickly this cold and flu season--without the side effects associated with conventional over-the-counter drugs. BLACK “FASHION” HISTORY

lack History Month is a time to reflect on the influential African-Americans, that have paved the way; but I feel the need to pay tribute to a few of the African-American pioneers in fashion design. These fashion designers paved the way for other designers of color. Because of the doors that they have opened, black women and men have made a name in fashion. Whether it is modeling, styling, designing, or photography, the following historical figures opened the door to the fashion world for Black America.

K

nown to some as the “no nonsense” judge, and to others as the “judges judge,” 9th Circuit Court Chief Judge Belvin Perry, Jr. has broadened his shoulders by standing on the shoulders of giants; extending his impactful reach beyond the bench, to juveniles and judiciary committees. Judge Belvin Perry steps outside of his courtroom and joins Gospel Now in his conference room, where he takes us on a historical journey, revealing the inspirations and foundations that preclude his prominent influence and preeminent posture in the Central Florida community. You have a reputation as a judge who is fair and thorough, and that you expect attorneys who come in to your courtroom to be completely prepared. To what or to whom would you attribute this particular posture? I would attribute that to a couple of things: One, my upbringing with my parents. From an early age with my parents I was always taught about being prepared and being on time and doing your best. That was reinforced at a very early age by the church I attended, Shiloh Baptist Church. I had the pleasure of having some Sunday School Teachers. One was Deacon Parks. I will never forget him doing what you would call a summary of the Sunday School lesson, and standing at assembly; at 8 and 9 years old, summarizing the lesson, standing in front of everyone. Pappy Kennedy was one of my Sunday School Teachers, Paul Perkins, Willie Bruton. So, I got that early on. In terms of running a courtroom and utilizing that, the first judge I practiced before was Emerson Thompson. He was always prepared, always on time, always expected the lawyers before him to be prepared. I’m a product of my home and environment. So, what’s the consequence when the lawyers are not prepared? 24

www .G ospel Now. Net

Well, they know what the consequences are. No one wants to appear with their clients and show that they are unprepared. It has its own consequences without you saying anything to them, because it becomes quite evident to their clients when they are not prepared; by the judges demeanor, and the questions that the judge asks. Your notoriety and global acclaim has kind of skyrocketed, most recently since the high-profile case that you are working on. What kind of processes do you go through to prepare for such a case? I do what I’ve been doing for the last 31 years of my legal career. I haven’t changed anything. You read the motions, you read the law. So, I haven’t done anything different than what I’ve done my entire career. Will you give us some advice for aspiring lawyers and judges…what they need to focus on, where their attention should be? For the young people, I will always tell them preparation, preparation. I was in Jones High School’s band. “Chief” Wilson was the band director. He would always tell us, “Perfect practice makes perfect performance.” It’s all in the preparation. I learned years ago as a young prosecutor, for every hour that I

was in court, I used to spend between 2 ½ to 3 hours in preparation for that one hour. If you do the preparation, then you are prepared. You have to look at all of the contingencies. You can’t just look at your case. When I was a prosecutor, I would put my case together, and then I would tear my case apart. I would say, “What would I do if I was defending the person?” What defenses and things I would raise, what objections I would raise. Then that way, you were well prepared for anything that came your way. The key is preparation, knowing the law and just being prepared for all contingencies. When you were selected amongst your peers to become the Chief Judge, was that surprising to you? No. What surprised me was that some of them thought enough to say that I should run. At the time, I had only been on the bench for 7 ½ years. I didn’t think my whiskers were long enough to do it. Matter of fact, I was trying to encourage someone else to run, and some of them suggested me. I know that you’ve attended a historically black college, Tuskegee. Tuskegee and Texas Southern. I went to Tuskegee for undergraduate and graduate school. I went to Texas Southern University, the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas for law school. In lieu of Black History Month, what would you say to the community in regards to our support or our responsibility as it relates to HBCU’s, and our acknowledgement or celebration of Black History Month? If people look back from where we are now, you can go back and trace the foundations to historically black universities. Let’s face reality. When we as a race could go no place else, it was those institutions that gave us the foundation, that gave us the education. They may not have been as well-equipped, or as plush as other universities, but they gave you an education. They gave you something to put between your two ears that you could use. And they did it with students from various backgrounds, various academic levels; didn’t necessarily close the door. I remember when I first went to Tuskegee. Everybody had to go through testing. I was wondering why folks were going through testing. Everybody was not equipped the same way. What happened was that there were some students who had to take some remedial classes, whether it was Math or English, to make up for the deficiencies that they may have had. When they got to the core courses, they were able to function. What those schools did was make sure you had a solid foundation to build your house on.

Some people came there, and their foundation was not ready for college. Rather than try to construct a house on sand, they made you have the proper foundation, and that’s why I like historically black universities. That’s why I think we should not forget them. They were there when no one else wanted us. I don’t think we should ever forget that, and I think now you can see that. Go to the Florida Classic. You have 65 to 70 thousand people in the stadium, but you have another 30 or 40 [thousand] that just come, and never go to the game. It’s those relationships that bond people, and make community. So, I think we owe a lot. They gave us a good education, and for those who needed a little help, they helped us. They took that diamond in the rough; they polished it, they honed it, and they made it beautiful. A lot of institutions just didn’t do it. If you were not polished, you didn’t get there. Anybody can take somebody with all of the skills, completely polished, and take them through; but it’s that unpolished diamond that has all of the potential, but just needs a little polishing. That’s what historically black universities did. Isaac Newton is often quoted as saying “If I’ve seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” If you were to take that same quote and declare that you’ve seen further by standing on the shoulders of giants, who would those giants be? First of all, my dad and mom. They made it quite plain to me, and all of my siblings that “you were going to be somebody, and you were going to do something.” Even as a child when you tried not to do that, you got knocked back in line. Mine starts at home. When I look out through the community, I look at examples of Paul Perkins, Charles Hawkins, Pappy Kennedy, T. C. Collier, my first pastor who baptized me when I was a child; Reverend J. W. Toomer at Shiloh. Those were all people, locally, that had an effect [on me]. One of the things that made it easy for me with my judicial career, and as a lawyer, was not only people like Paul Perkins, but Emerson Thompson. I learned a great deal when I was a young prosecutor, in his courtroom. He made sure you did it the right way. He didn’t cut me any slack. He expected perfection out of everyone, and he demanded it. A lot of people tend to forget that he was the first County Court Judge of our hue, and Circuit Court Judge of our hue. Paul C. Perkins, Sr. with the City of Orlando [he was appointed by Mayor Bob Carr as the City Prosecutor in 1965 (the first African American in the state of Florida to hold such a position)]. You’ve got to have trailblazers. Emerson became Chief Judge. When you look at our Circuit, we have 65 judges. Back during that time when I became Chief, I think we may have had www .G ospel Now. Net

25

40. When you look at the numbers, out of our 65 now, we have 5 African American Judges. Back then, we had 3; Reggie Whitehead, Theotis Bronson, and myself. He was able to become Chief Judge, and he did an excellent job, so it made it a lot easier for me to be able to do it. Just the community in general, I will never forget a teacher I had in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade; Ms. Deloris Williams. She was married, and is still married to Nate Williams (Nathaniel Williams), a basketball coach at Jones High School. She was an excellent teacher. She followed our whole class. She moved from 3rd grade, to 4th grade, to 5th grade. She knew how to motivate you, but most importantly of all, discipline. She expected you to behave, and if you didn’t; back during those times, teachers would paddle you. I had my share of paddling. She was an excellent teacher, she worked you hard, and she demanded the best out of everyone. Mildred Brewer, even though she never taught me, was an elementary school teacher at Jones. Ms. Brewer, was the type of person that believed in good manners and believed in good grooming. Even though I wasn’t in her class, she would always compliment you, and encourage students to even dress right, talk right, sit up right, act right. Those were the types of people that we had. The major difference as opposed to where we were then and where we are now [is], people cared about people. They lived in the same community that you lived in. They went to the same churches that you went to. They cared about everyone, and they would correct you, whether you were in school, on your way to school, [or] on the playground. If you were doing something you were not supposed to be doing, they would stop and correct you. Now if you do that; you do it at your own peril, and that’s sad. My life, I have to give total credit to my parents, to my church family when I was growing up, and to people who took an interest in me, and who always wanted you to be your best. I am a product of my community. Chief Judge Belvin Perry, Jr. has been instrumental in establishing the Ninth Judicial Circuit’s Sanctioned to Read program, citing a “direct correlation between juvenile crime and academic success.” Sanctioned to Read is an individualized, highly motivational, diagnostic and prescriptive reading program. He has served as a Florida circuit court judge since 1989, and is currently a member of The Florida Bar, the Texas Bar Association, the Orange County Bar Association, and the chairman of the Florida Innocence Commission, which examines the causes of wrongful conviction in Florida. 26

The Gift Without Repentance

T

he anticipated fulfillment of any dream is both energizing and exhilarating; that is, if all of the pieces of the puzzle are in place. When the operative dynamics that lead you from “hope to happen” are synergistically functioning in a collaborative progression of events, bells chime and whistles blow; but when there is not enough fuel in the vehicle to move the vision, the frustration of failure stealthily postures itself to disappoint and ultimately discourage. Orlando-based grant writer, Irma Michelle Jackson-Stewart, CEO and Owner of IM Credit Solution & Grant Writer Consultant (IMCS), is armed and dangerous with the power of knowing how to navigate the waters of bureaucracy to make missions possible and visions viable. The entrepreneur, evangelist, former army captain, wife and mother has managed to turn the tables in her own life, while leading others in the path of personal and professional success as her grant writing business has become a timely tool for the connection of funding sources to fundamental programs and community projects. Michelle JacksonStewart speaks to Gospel Now about her company’s success.

Tell us a little bit about your company…the motivation behind its existence and the purpose for which it exists. The company is called IM Credit Solution & Grant Writer Consultant, Inc. It was established in 2007 in Orlando. We provide grant writing service and credit counseling and repair to the general public. Ninety Five (95%) of our clients seek out the grant writing services. We offer this service mainly to minorities of small businesses, non-profits and individuals. The motivation behind its existence is two-fold: I was trained many years ago in the field of grant writing and how to efficiently and effortlessly obtain government grants by [the] late Senator Ralph Yarborough; but never 30

put this skill to use. After I was released from prison, I went from the Dungeon to the Palace. The Lord states in His Word, “ I will restore the years the cankerworms and locust had eaten up from your life.” So, I was encouraged by family members (Tressa and Carlton Smith) to start my own business writing grants; a skill I was blessed with, but never put to use. Secondly, because I had skills and knowledge of how to successfully obtain grant awards that many other grant writers didn’t have, all of my grants were being approved and people were getting the money they needed to start a business, keep their business open or finance much needed expenses, such as home repairs, college education or major medical bills. As more and more clients came to me testifying about how the money was a blessing to them, I realized that this was not just a business anymore, but a ministry. This business allows me to share my story of survival and repentance and at the same time lead others to Christ. Besides Gospel Now, what other mediums are you utilizing to present your services to the

community…are there television and/or radio programs that feature your organization, and what are the broadcast times and days? I have been approached by Essence magazine, the Advocate Newspaper and other smaller community newspapers that have heard about my business, but have yet to grant interviews. I am spending this time building my business and taking it to the next level. Because the growth of my business was rapid, I had to move it from a home-based location to a large office complex. Upon completion of my move, and once my staff and I are settled in, we will then grant interviews to other mediums. However, the explosive growth I have experienced has all been by “word of mouth,” no advertising, email marketing, or direct mail, just word of mouth; and we have grown from approximately 200 to over 2000 new clients, with the word spreading more each day about our services. Additionally, I am a co-host of a radio show called “Justice For All” on Rejoice 1140 AM in Orlando, every Sunday at 3:00 pm. This show ministers to ex-felons and provides them with encouragement and resources required to get their life back on track. What sort of success rate do you currently experience with your clients, and what stipulations must the client comply with in order for success to be realized?

businesses and non-profit grants, the proposals are a little more detailed, and require a little more research and time to prepare. We also offer governmentapproved small business loans to our clients. 4.

Who qualifies as a “client?”

For the government grants - any minority, 18 or older, be it a business, individual or nonprofit. There are other grants we apply for such as Educational that are awarded based on need, and not ethnic background. Not only is Michelle a successful business woman, but she is an accomplished singer, actress and

model. People may remember Michelle for her role as Jennifer in Garrett Davis’ play, “If Loving You Is Wrong.” In this 2004 production, she starred opposite R&B singer Freddie Jackson, Blanche McAllister of the Tri-City Singers and Todd Galbreath of the Kurt Carr Singers. Coming in 2011, she will be releasing two books entitled “Thou Shall Be Called My Messenger” and “Restored.”

All clients sign a General Agreement and submit to us the following:

Special Thanks, Praises and Exhortations To: All of my Consultants and Grant Writers, Police Chief Val Demings, Orlando Police Department, Orlando Commissioner Sam Ings, Pastor Glendy Hamilton, Pastor James & First Lady Hicks of Center of Faith, Apopka FL, Pastor Dana Jackson - 1140am, Attorney Desiree Sanchez, Bishop Allen Wiggins, Dr. Tonya Reed, Dr. Israel of Moffitt Cancer Center of Tampa, Lynette Jackson-Lott, President Metro West Case Branch, Dr. Angelo & Pastor Bertha Cruzsein, Equipping Center International Church, all of my clients and supporters.

• A deposit ($300 for individuals and nonprofits; $500 for small businesses)

How may subscribers contact you for additional information concerning your services?

We have a 100% success rate. We are so confident of our ability to obtain grant awards for our clients, that we offer a money back guarantee. If a successfully submitted grant proposal is not approved by the grant awarding agency, we will refund the client their grant proposal deposit, minus Fifty Dollars ($50.00).

• A copy of a state-issued photo identification and social security card for identity verification purposes only. (To prevent fraud and the creation of non-existent applicants) • A wish list (their plans for the money) • Plenty of patience (the government does [not] act quickly) For many government grants, this is all that’s needed and we take it from there. HOW CAN A GREEN CARD HOLDER

(PERMANENT RESIDENT) FILE FOR A FAMILY MEMBER?

T

he most common question presented to my office is “how can a green card holder (permanent resident) submit a sponsorship petition for their relatives? “ As a green card holder (permanent resident), you may petition for certain family members to immigrate to the United States as permanent residents. A green card holder may submit a family-based sponsorship petition for the following family members: (1) spouse (husband or wife), (2) unmarried children under 21, and (3) unmarried son or daughter of any age.

WHAT IS THE APPLICATION PROCESS? To obtain a green card for your family member, you must file a sponsorship petition, provide proof of your status to demonstrate that you are a permanent resident, submit evidence of the qualifying relationship such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, divorce decree, etc., and submit proof of any legal name change for you or your family member (the beneficiary).

WHAT ARE THE PREFERENCE CATEGORIES? When petitioning for your relative, Immigration will place the petition into one of the following preference categories for processing: • First preference: Unmarried, adult sons and daughters of U.S. citizens. (Adult means 21 or older). • Second Preference (2A): Spouses of green card holders, unmarried children (under 21) of permanent residents. • Second Preference (2B): Unmarried, adult sons and daughters of permanent residents. • Third Preference: Married, sons and daughters (any age) of U.S. citizens.

• Fourth Preference: Brothers and sisters of adult U.S. citizens. A visa becomes available to a preference category according to the priority date (the date the I-130 was properly filed). Your family member’s preference category will determine how long he or she will have to wait for an immigrant visa number.

The Buffalo Soldiers of Florida is a historical, reenactment organization. Organized in 1993, the group is determined to present the story and "real" history of the men who have served this country since the end of the Civil War. The Central Florida group has traveled the world, giving demonstrations, seminars and participating in Civil War reenactments. The goal of the Buffalo Soldiers of Florida is to reach the minds and hearts of young people in the state, and the world. By teaching the history of these unsung black heroes, the Florida group hopes to change the way young people look at the world and themselves. Founder and President John Russell says, “we are losing another generation of our children to the streets. The lure of "bling and the life" is blinding them to the reality of life. Violence and drugs are stealing too many of our young minds and souls. The young need to be reminded of where they have come from; the sacrifices that have been made to pave the way to the freedoms we enjoy today. The Buffalo Soldiers of Florida reach out to young men from single parent homes and those who have been adjudicated. The young men are taught how the men of the 1800's gave their lives to build a better future for all of the people of their culture. A young Trooper is taught how to follow orders, work within a group, care for and support others. They also learn to take care of animals, ride, and put up and organize a camp site; in other words, to become responsible and contributing members of society. The group is available for public demonstrations and talks about the Buffalo Soldiers’ history. One of the group’s objectives is to contribute to the community in any way they are asked. We are a public service organization, and our greater goal is to make sure that the complete history of this country is given to all of its citizens and proper credit is given where it is deserved; especially to the brave men who lived and died so heroically in service of this country. Heart disease is the #1 killer in adult men and women; but it is never too late to start working on a healthy heart. Coronary heart disease can be prevented, treated and even reversed with early detection and simple diet and lifestyle changes. You can avoid joining over 785,000 people who suffered heart attacks in 2009.

T

he CDC reports that every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and about one every minute will die from one. You should know the signs, symptoms and importance of calling 911 immediately at the onset of heart attack symptoms. Call 911 for: Chest discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back, discomfort in other areas of the upper body that include pain in one or both arms, the back, neck jaw, or stomach, or shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. How do you know if you are at risk for heart attack? Answer these simple questions. Are you 20 pounds overweight or have a BMI greater than 25?

How did you do? You increased your chance of heart attack for each question you answered yes. The good news is, everything on the list except family history is preventable and requires simple changes to have a healthy heart. You can start today! The first step is to have a physician check your heart health. They will advise you of any test required to give you a clear picture of your heart and any risk. A LIFESAVING HERO The story of Ben Carson is the stuff of dreams. He went from a life of destitution and and underachievement to becoming a gifted surgeon and dedicating his life to the service of others. Because of his work as a neurosurgeon, Ben Carson has become a lifesaving hero for thousands of people. For his efforts to improve the lives of America's youth, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor possible, on June 19, 2008 by Former President George W. Bush.

B

WHO IS BEN CARSON?

orn in inner-Detroit and raised in a broken family, Benjamin Carson was considered one of the dumbest kids in school. But, with the help and encouragement of his mother, Sonya, who only had a third grade education, Ben studied hard and graduated from high school with honors and gained admission into Yale University. Always having a fascination with the human mind and brain, he earned a degree in psychology. But, upon graduation he decided that he would instead like to pursue something more, and so he went on to medical school at the University of Michigan. At this time, Ben Carson discovered his unique ability to visualize the human brain in three dimensions and his excellent hand-eye coordination. Having a background in psychology and neuroscience, he chose a career in neurosurgery. When he finished medical school, Ben Carson became a neurosurgery resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and at only age 33 he became the youngest director of pediatric neurosurgery ever. He then went on to make medical history in medical procedures such as the separation of the Binder siamese twins in 1987 who were joined in the back of the head. This surgery was risky, as all previous attempts at this type of procedure 36

had failed with the loss of one or both twins. After 22 hours of intense surgery and 70 staff members, the Binder twins were successfully separated. Dr. Carson performed many other medical "miracles", and since has earned many awards and honors, including being appointed to the President's Council on Bioethics by George W. Bush in 2004 and most recently, being given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush on June 19, 2008. Carson has written three bestselling books published by Zondervan, an international Christian media and publishing company: Gifted Hands, The Big Picture, and Think Big. The first book is an autobiography, and the other two are about his personal philosophies of success that incorporate hard work and a faith in God; Carson is a Seventh-day Adventist. In a debate with Richard Dawkins, Francis Collins, and Daniel Dennett, Carson stated he doesn't believe in evolution: "I don't believe in evolution...He says that because there are these similarities even though we can't specifically connect them it proves that this is what happened."

W ORLD T ALENT S EARCH Sing” re-defined “Gospel” in her heart, as she gravitated more toward this style of music. During an interruption in her spiritual walk, J. Lizette proceeded to test the musical grounds of the secular world, becoming the fourth member of an all girl R&B quartette named “Infinite Soul,” opening for numerous major recording artists in her second hometown, Orlando. Eventually, the group split, pushing J. Lizette into a solo career.

W

ith her album entitled “WALK IN FREEDOM,” J. Lizette’s spiritual journey is off to an amazing start. Jennifer Lizette Burnam (J. Lizette) is a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native who has had an ear for melodies and rhythm since her childhood, attracting her to all types of music. Growing up in a very small Pentecostal church where the Word was always instilled in her, J. Lizette’s musical influence stems from her parents who were musicians at the church; her mother played the organ, “which always needed some serious tuning,” she adds, and her father played the acoustic guitar. Growing up in this environment exposed her to amazing Hispanic Christian artists such as Rene Gonzalez, Nueva Vida, Yadira, and others. Her definition of the word “Gospel” was the “good news” about Jesus Christ, which she was told to spread. At the age of 11, Kirk Franklin and the Family’s “Why I

“Isn’t there more to this life?” and “What exactly is my reason for living?” are the questions, turned lyrics that were born out of this trial, now heard on her album, “You Saved Me.” Her solo career came to a complete halt after the birth of her two children, leading to a bout with depression and insecurities, hitting what she has called “rock bottom.” Referring back to what she was taught as a little girl, “The battle’s not yours, so give it to the Lord,” she totally surrendered and pleaded for GOD’s guidance! Needless to say, it worked!! Now married to an amazing man, Chris Burnam, with two beautiful and healthy daughters, 5-year old Leah and 4-year old Chanelle, J. Lizette declares “I am finally in my element, and now I understand where GOD has wanted me to be all along. Nothing can be more fulfilling than the life that I have now,” because now she “Walks In Freedom!!”
