Answer the Call I

n this season of pruning we tend to doubt what we are really called to do. As for Dr. Michael and Samantha Phillips, not only do they know their calling but they are embracing it and their members are reaping a harvest.

Our feature ministry is Kingdom Life ministry which is based out of Kissimmee, Florida and led by the dynamic couple of faith, Dr. Michael and Dr. Samantha Phillips. I recently was fortunate to speak with Dr. Samantha about some of the success stories that she has witnessed within their church. “Dr. Sam,” as she is affectionately called by her leaders and members, gave me some keen insight on how their obedience on tithing and offering has opened up God’s promise in their lives and how systematic giving affects our calling. In their ministry, they continue to teach their members about the blessings of giving as a result of consistently following His Word. Leaders have risen in the church, taken that mantle and found it was easy to let the Spirit lead them, when they were no longer encumbered with their finances. Dr. Samantha made reference to a few leaders who because of their faith and willingness to walk out that faith have been able to find their calling. One such leader was a member who Dr. Samantha spoke to about a word she had received regarding her playing a keyboard. She had no knowledge or training on how to play, and at first was a tad resistant. She began to trust in the Godly encouragement she received from her pastor, and opened herself up to the process of what later developed into an amazing praise and worship ministry. Destiny Henry leads the praise and worship, already has an album out through Kingdom Life and is being called to lead with her unique voice and song writing. Another example is a couple who attended regular church events, but it was Dr. Michael who saw something in them and wanted to give them roles in the ministry. At first, the Otero’s did not have the experience, but was ready for what was ahead by staying committed to 4

www .G ospel Now. Net

God’s leading. Since then, they have experienced great financial rewards and built wonderful relationships at Kingdom Life. Another great success story involved members who came into the church a few short years ago and have grown in a tremendous way. This couple has just developed into dynamic speakers, each in their own right. Their humble and coachable spirit led Dr. Samantha to impart some business wisdom that took the ender’s household to the upper echelon of the home business industry. Since then their marketplace ministry message has been sought after all over the country. The enders’ are now associate pastors at Kingdom Life, and share in the seed-faith lifestyle. Kingdom Life International Church fulfills the call to change lives, strengthen families and fulfill destinies through many avenues including, annual conferences like the Men of Dominion Men’s Advance, Kingdom Lady Women’s Conference, and the Faith, Family & Finance Conference created to impart, change, restore, and strengthen the Body of Christ. Kingdom Life International Church also hosts major community outreaches such as the Back 2 School Jam and Hallelujah night, which serves hundreds of people each year from the Central Florida region. If you’re interested in learning more about this ministry first hand, join them in the Kissimmee location at 819 N. Central Avenue Kissimmee, FL

LUV U

ust a month ago people were getting geared up for the Valentine’s holiday buying candy, roses, cards, teddy bears, lingerie and more. Red, white and pink was everywhere. But on my way back from a recent speaking engagement, a conversation with two of my best friends reminded me of a very valuable truth. Their words seemed to play over and over in my head like a CD on repeat. The more I pondered their insightful conversation, the more I realized that this HAD to be the subject of my next article.

8

u that will be. If u don't, then your past will always be your future. If you are 350lbs., learn to LuV u at 350. That doesn't mean stay 350. you still have to break the barriers of low self-esteem and emotional vulnerability that create some of the biggest emotional roller coasters of our lives. Low self- esteem and emotional vulnerability tend to lead us into unhealthy attachments with people or things (food, drugs, alcohol... etc). Wrong attachments can kill you. They can kill you emotionally, spiritually; it can kill your influence, or worse yet, it can lead to your own mortality.

I think we have no one, myself all heard, “Love So what does it mean to luv u? luving u is about your neighbor as establishing healthy boundaries. Without borders, emotions included, wants to yourself...” at some get damaged and you are reduced to being functional rather feel like they are tolerated; point in our lives. than fully operational in your life and in other relationships being whether it is in every time I have (whether amorous or philanthropic). friendships, marital heard that saying, relationships, business relationships, or anything else. people were trying to convince someone to give thought To be simply tolerated means that a person deals with to their actions and break away from selfish behaviors. you out of their frustration and aggravation and not out As a result of my conversation, I came to realize of appreciation or admiration. The strain created can be something. Most of the time when people introduce this great because usually in those situations, they are either concept to others, they seem to place sole emphasis on not honest enough to tell you why they feel the way they acting unselfishly toward others and loving others; but I do or they are not strong enough to bring closure when have come to realize that the most important part of that things are obviously irreconcilable. However, the deception takes on a whole as important as loving them! new dimension when it is u who is deceiving yourself. So what does it mean to LuV u? LuVing u is about HuH????? I have discovered (even in my own life at establishing healthy boundaries. Without borders, times) that we say we LuV the u in the mirror, when in emotions get damaged and you are reduced to being fact we simply tolerate him or her. Although this is not functional rather than fully operational in your life and in always the case, but so often I have seen women who other relationships (whether amorous or philanthropic). change hair styles almost as much as they change their In such cases, the old saying is true, “hurting people clothes. Most of the women that I have seen do this, hurt people.” All too often, the recipient of our have actually been searching for themselves. I have seen both married men and married proverbial gates. women who dress to impress just to go to the mall or To LuV u also means that you develop your ability the grocery store; not just because they like dressing to accept the u that is, while you are on your way to the

Very often they do it out of their personal insecurity and not from a place of personal settlement in their lives. These kinds of actions can create a downward spiral in their marriages; because, it too often creates insecurities in their spouse, who is now left feeling like they are not good enough to satisfy the emotional need. When that spouse begins to act on his or her insecurities, the fallout ensues. As you can see, not LuVInG u can create major problems in all of our lives. It can make it absolutely impossible for us to love our neighbor as ourselves; OR, perhaps we actually are loving our neighbor as ourselves... we just love ourselves so little that we pass that on to our neighbor. either way, if you my friend, are to develop healthy relationships and live a much more fulfilling life, you must learn how to LUV U first, which begins with loving God. Be sure to come back next month for the conclusion of this article and find out HOW to begin the process of LuVInG u. After-all you only live once... so MAKe IT COunT!

For a healthier 7 heart tips By Bakari Burns

P

rotecting your heart isn’t always our number one priority - but it should be. Heart disease is the number one killer of African American women, and African Americans are at greater risk of heart disease than any other ethnic group.

Instead of simply focusing on health numbers that are easy to measure, such as weight; focus your attention on these seven tips to boost your heart health and prevent a deadly disease.

1. Be More Active. Lack of exercise is on the American Heart Association’s list of major risk factors for heart disease. Some of the other risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, and high blood cholesterol. Exercise is not only a weapon against heart disease; it reduces the risk of breast cancer, obesity, colon cancer, stress, depression and anxiety. The average person should exercise 3 to 5 times a week for 30 minutes at moderate intensity. Just by adding an additional 30 minutes of everyday activity, such as taking the stairs instead of an elevator or biking to work, you can achieve significant health benefits. For best results, incorporate weight training into your exercise routine 2 to 3 times a week. Resistance training with resistance bands or light to moderate weight lifting, builds muscle, helps decrease body fat and improves your cholesterol levels.

2. Keep Inflammation In Check. Keep inflammation at bay by increasing your intake of fish, chicken and vegetable protein such as beans. Red meats such as steak and hamburgers should be limited to a couple of times a month because of their high saturated fat content. Having a good balance of protein, carbohydrate and healthy fat will help promote the production of anti-inflammatory compounds known as eicosanoids. Eicosanoids help prevent hardening of the arteries. 3. Spice It Up. Enhance your meals with garlic, ginger and onions whenever possible. These herbs are known to be beneficial for circulation. 4. Limit Your Sodium www .G ospel Now. Net 12

& Increase Your Potassium. Increasing your intake of potassium while limiting sodium can reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack. Potassium-rich foods include bananas, cantaloupes and avocados.

5. Reduce The Bad Fats & Add More Good Fats. Bad fats are those labeled saturated

or hydrogenated, vegetable oil, corn oil, shortening, margarine and cottonseed oil, as well as those in red meat, dairy products and peanuts. Healthy fats are fish oil, olive oil, canola oil, hemp oil, and coconut oil. Despite popular belief, using a small amount of real butter is better for your heart than margarine.

6. Give Soy A Chance. Soy products are very beneficial for heart health. Although controversial, they have been found useful in reducing cholesterol levels. However, you should limit soy intake to once a day to avoid gas. If you find it triggers gas, bloating or other digestive discomfort, soy may not be for you. 7. Be Conscious of Cholesterol. The best foods for reducing cholesterol include garlic, oat bran, apple, flaxseed, turmeric and fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Surprisingly, it's probably the carbohydrates in your diet that are raising your cholesterol, not the fats. So, limit your consumption of white, processed flours, pastries, cakes, sugary candies, and deserts to no more than once a week. In addition to all of the above tips, also make sure to visit your doctor for an annual exam - this includes a cholesterol check. Blackdoctor.org Orange Blossom Family Health Center

Bakari f. Burns

Serving the Underserved By Rhielle Davis

O

ne of the daunting dilemmas of our day is the equal accessibility of quality health care services for all citizens. According to U.S. Census data released in September, 2010, Central Florida has a higher rate of uninsured people than the entire state of Florida and the rest of the nation. At least, one in five residents is without health-care coverage. The challenges confronting healthcare reform appear to offer no immediate resolve, nor viable intermediate options to what is becoming an ever-increasing issue for constituents and communities throughout the country. In the meantime, local communities and districts are forced to resort to creative, strategic alternatives in order to meet the healthcare needs of local residents. Helping to lead the charge in providing quality health care for the uninsured, underinsured and homeless population in Central Florida, is a homegrown, young, gifted, and black, grass-roots, game-changer, Bakari F. Burns. In a recent interview with the FAMU graduate who holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health, Mr. Burns shares with GospelNow, his focus and vision for helping to improve the “health status of Central Floridians.” 14

www .G ospel Now. Net

Your interest and involvement in the public health arena is extensive. What was the “ah ha” moment or epiphany that fostered and ultimately sustained your engagement in the public health arena? My “ah ha” moment came when I was completing my college internship at the Bond Community Health Center in Tallahassee, Florida and I came in contact with so many hard working people who did not have any health insurance. unfortunately, what happens is that people without health insurance often delay seeing a Doctor until their condition worsens. The epiphany for me at that time was “In order to improve the health status of a person and a community, there needs to be access to timely, affordable, quality health care services.” So, from that point on I made it my commitment to work in underserved communities to help develop systems of health care that will ensure that all people, regardless of their financial situation have access to preventative and primary health care services. Growing up in orlando, attending some of the same schools, facing some of the same challenges and coming in contact with some of the same influences as many others; to what or whom would you attribute your attention and adherence to your goals? A PRAyInG MOTHeR, A FORGIVInG GOD, and A SuPPORTIVe COMMunITy! Speaking of goals, you have made some milestone accomplishments in that the Health care center for the Homeless has experienced phenomenal growth. in 2003, when you accepted the offer to become the Center’s Chief Executive Officer, did you anticipate growth to this magnitude? Back in 2003 when I accepted the CeO position, honestly, my focus was on keeping the doors open and the financial stability of the Health Center. The growth that we have experienced was unforeseen; but very timely, given the increase in the number of homeless and uninsured people in our community. How does a person become a client at the Health care center for the Homeless, and what should the client expect? A person can be homeless or uninsured and reside in the Tri-County area of Orange, Osceola, and Seminole. Based on income and family size, the person has to be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines; meaning, a single person making $21,780 a year or less or a family of 4 with a combined income of $44,700 or less will qualify for our services. A person can call (407) 428-5751 to make an appointment or walk-in to the Orange Blossom Family Health Center located at

232 n. Orange Blossom Trail, Mon. – Fri. from 8:00 am – to 5:00 pm. All services are offered on a sliding fee scale, meaning the fees charged are directly related to the person’s income and family size. Individuals who come to the Health Center to receive services should expect to receive quality health care services in a friendly, clean, high technical and professional environment where the needs of the patient come first! considering the increase in the homeless, uninsured, and underinsured population in central Florida, do you envision an expansion in facilities or services? We currently have plans to expand the Orange Blossom Family Health Center, adding 4 additional dental chairs (taking the total to 10), 3 medical exam rooms (taking the total to 15) and expanding the Pharmacy and the Patient education and Group Counseling Center. We are constantly looking at ways to expand services; however, our immediate focus is to increase the quality and efficiency of the services that we are currently providing. Your investment in the central Florida community is tremendous, as evidenced in your service on several community boards. What do you want your greatest contribution to the fabric of this community to be? My focus and desire is to develop a sustainable health care delivery system that guarantees access to quality, affordable health care services for ALL regardless of their financial, insurance, or employment status. I really just want to give back to the community that gave so much to me! Services include: Primary and Preventative Health Care, Dental, Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Pharmaceutical, Vision, and Case Management.

THE PRINCIPLES OF HEALTH PART 1

BY DR. CORLIS RENEE JOHNSON, PHARMACIST, FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PRACTITIONER

c

hanges Takes Time: The objective, as in all things, is perfection; but in the area of diet, moderation is often needed. the following principles are part of the laws of nature. it is vital to remember that change takes time. Take one step at a time; slowly but surely the battle is won. Start with a little compromise, the ultimate goal should be perfection.

a Food iS anYtHinG tHat Will GRoW: Most of the American food that is readily available is cheap junk food that any smart pig farmer would not give his hogs! We are a society that has been programmed to survive in the modern fast-paced world, thus we require fast-paced meals. It is big business to use the right colors and textures so a food’s appearance will lure us in. In the uneducated state that most of us are in with regard to the area of diet and nutrition, the people using the gimmicks are winning. While we are eating the foods that look nice on the shelf and smell nice and taste like something fake, we forget that each of those yummy items is loaded with preservatives to make it taste good and look good, but most of it is absolutely worthless to the body nutritionally, and actually creates a process where the body begins to degenerate. As a result, we get sick, have pains, and die prematurely. Any food that cannot be put in ground to grow is dead food. This means it requires energy to digest, instead of creating energy when digested. Thus, anything that will not reproduce and grow is a dead food, and does not promote life.

Some nutRientS muSt be Supplemented:

In realizing that the only food that is supposed to go

16

www .G ospel Now. Net

in the mouth is that which God made (and preferably only “live”), the options suddenly become very limited. Some say they would starve if they followed these principles. Supplementation counteracts the negative effects of the chemicals, poisons, dyes, bacteria, etc., as well as supplies the nutrition that the body missed out on the table due to food processing or depletion of the soil. The only reason we eat food is because God created food to carry the nutrition our bodies need to flourish. Ninety-five percent (95%) of what goes into your mouth is supposed to come back out, indicating that only a small percentage is required to keep the body healthy. So, if the food no longer carries the nutrition due to imbalance of the land, we must get the nutrients someplace other than our diet, and that “someplace” is supplements. understand two things: even if you grow your own crops, you still are not getting a balanced nutritional meal without adding herbs and minerals.

Updating Your Pantry with Healthy Foods It is essential to stock your pantry with great-tasting, healthy choices. Spring is near and it is time to do spring cleaning of your food pantry. A well stocked pantry is important to people with a busy lifestyle. Here are a few suggestions to give your panty a healthy makeover. Get rid of those empty calorie foods. These are foods that do not deliver necessary vitamins and minerals. For example: cookies, candy, sweetened drinks, chips, pastries, hi-fat salad dressings and spreads. When possible, switch to light salad dressings and spreads, and use diet beverages as an alternative to sweetened drinks. Remember, out of sight, out of mind. Stock up on healthy great tasting foods. There are some great tasting reduced-fat chip options, such as the Baked Lays®, reduced-fat Ruffles®, Cape Cod® reduced-fat potato chips that use less fat and canola oil. Here are more suggestions of healthy substitutes for your pantry. • Canned diced tomatoes, paste and sauce, lower sodium versions • Brown rice • Whole grain breakfast cereals • Hi-fiber breakfast cereals that contain 7 grams of fiber or more • Whole wheat flour substitute, this for half with white flour in a recipe • Old fashioned oats • Bottled marinara sauce, choosing one made with olive or canola oil • Salt-free seasoning blends • Artificial sweeteners • Canola and Olive oils

Reduce the saturated and trans fat in your pantry. Health-wise, nothing good comes from eating foods that contain saturated or trans fats. Some experts advise that trans and saturated fats together should make up no more than 10% of our total calories. Others say our trans fat intake should be as close to zero as possible. Let’s become label readers. When a product label lists "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" vegetable oils or shortening among the first three ingredients, it contains saturated and trans fats. Choose processed foods with fewer total grams of fat. Reduced-fat options tend to have a lot less saturated fat and trans fat per serving than their regular counterparts. Here are some examples of snack foods with lower saturated and trans fats. • Reduced-Fat Ritz®: 140 calories, 4 grams fat, 0 grams saturated fat (per 30-gram serving) Orville • Redenbacher's Smart Pop: 110 calories, 2 grams fat, and 0 grams saturated fat (per 7.5 cups popped) • Reduced-Fat Bisquick®: 140 calories, 3 grams fat, .5 grams saturated fat (per 1/3-cup mix)

It is important for consumers to become more aware of what is in our food and how the food is made. Making over our pantries, we will gain more knowledge of what is healthy or unhealthy in our pantries. So let’s get started making over our pantries for spring.

in GenerAl, GenerAl it’s contemporary style, it’s festive, it’s after five, it’s cocktail, it's dressy, but not exactly formal. you can wear all one color or mix them up. That's the fun in it. There are only two colors, but they are far from boring...

men: A simple black suit

is classic and refined. Men may wear dress shirts with no tie, provided that they have a jacket; or to jazz it up a bit, lose the coat and wear a tie with patterns.

fooD for tHouGHt: Infusing your personal style with daring creativity can make you stand out as a guest. It allows you to personalize or showcase your look in a sea of black and white. 20

www .G ospel Now. Net

Women: The little black dress was made for this party, but any white or two-color combo will do. Add personal flair with casual or colored accessories, this will give a dash of style and personality.

After Five means that tuxes are not required, nor are long

dresses. This dictates dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Cocktail Attire typically means short, elegant dresses for her and dark suits for him. Festive Attire is usually seen around the holidays, with the mood of the party being Informal or Semi-Formal. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle or holiday bent (i.e. a beaded sweater with black pants, silk blouse with a black skirt). Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sport coat; for her, a dressy pants look. (Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate for Dressy Casual).

ore than a decade ago, the destinies of two sisters and a friend collided, eventually launching the gospel music career of Central Florida’s own, “VARIeTy.” Sisters, Maille and Thamar Bazile were introduced to Lynn William at the Christ Sanctified Church when the Bazile family relocated to Florida from new Jersey. The trio became inseparable as their love for the Lord and their appreciation of Gospel Music synchronized their hearts and centralized their mission to win souls for the kingdom with their voices. Though separated for a season, the trio found themselves reunited at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ MeGA Fest® in 2006 in Atlanta. Participating in an openmic event caused the young ladies to realize the power of purpose and presence, as the crowd’s reaction amazed them. Through prayerful consideration, the girls adopted the name “Voice of Unity,” only to find another group already recording nationally, under the same name. nameless, though not visionless, the young ladies continued ministering at a host of events and later that year, the name “VARIeTy” became the group’s official name. With many miles behind them, several major platforms to their credit, and a successful album, VARIeTy embraces the “opportunity to spread the Gospel of the Lord through song; acknowledging it as a true blessing, as they patiently and graciously await the many doors” that God has prepared for them. www .G ospel Now. n January 12, 2011, City of Orlando District 6 Commissioner Samuel B. Ings and Global Haitian Advancement Through Education and Sports (GHATES) celebrated the resilience of the Haitian people and reminded us of the devastation created by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake of January 12, 2010. The City of Orlando and Orange County proclaimed January 12, 2011 as Remember Haiti--The Earthquake Day! This event recognized survivors, mourned the ones that were lost, and made us aware of the continuing need the Haitian people still face. Global Haitian Advancement Through Education & Sports (GHATES) is a not-for-profit organization registered both in the US & Haiti, providing opportunities to the less fortunate in Haiti through Education & Sports. With a vision to have an educated, healthy, prosperous and thriving Haiti, our efforts will be continued in collecting items for Haiti through February 25, 2011 with the co-sponsorship of City of Orlando District 6 Commissioner Samuel B. Ings. With Chief Miller’s support, the City of Orlando Fire Department hosted a collection drive throughout the month of February. Recycle bins were delivered to all fire stations for collection. In April, GHATES and OFD volunteers will pack the collected items and then ship them to Haiti. You can make a contribution by donating directly to GHATES. BULLYING & THE LAW

B

By Alisia Adamson

ullying is becoming common practice among our youth. unfortunately, this can be one of the most traumatic experiences our children ever face. Incidents are reaching frightening proportions and have reached the attention of our Legislators. Florida Legislature adopted an anti-bullying law in April 2008. The law is called "Jeffrey Johnston Stand up for All Students Act" (Fla. Stat. section 1006.147), named after Jeffrey Johnston, a 15-year-old boy who committed suicide after being the object of bullying, for two years. This Florida law prohibits bullying and harassment of any public K-12 student or employee, and requires public schools to adopt measures to protect students and employees from the physical and psychological effects of bullying and harassment.

The Florida law regarding bullying is designed to be a safety measure for schools and the Florida community. Section 1006.147, titled "Bullying and Harassment Prohibited," proscribes bullying and harassment in Florida's schools; in any educational program or activity conducted by an educational institution; or through the use of data or software accessed by a computer, computer system, or computer network of a K-12 public educational institution. Therefore, using the school e-mail network, even while at home, to bully or harass other students is prohibited by this Florida law. The law defines "bullying" as the act of systematically or chronologically inflicting physical harm or emotional distress on a student. The law provides examples of conducts that may result in bullying: teasing, social exclusion, threat, intimidation, stalking, physical violence, theft, sexual or racist harassment, public humiliation or destruction of property. Harassment is defined as any verbal, written, or physical conduct that threatens, insults, or dehumanizes public school students or employees. Written harassment includes those committed through electronic means and the use of computer software. The conduct must be sufficient to place the student or employee in reasonable fear of harm against him or his property; and sufficient to interfere with the student’s school performance, opportunities, or benefits. The Florida anti-bullying law also penalizes those who induce or coerce others to bully or harass public school students or employees. The Florida anti-bullying law also mandates each school district to adopt a code of conduct against bullying and harassment. This code of conduct must

protect all students regardless of their status under the law, but the school districts are authorized to create student categories when drafting their school policies. The code of conduct must include a general prohibition of bullying and harassment; a definition of these terms; an expected student conduct and behavior; description of the consequences of falsely and wrongfully accusing others of bullying and harassment; the procedures for reporting bullying and harassment incidents, including anonymous reports; a procedure for the prompt investigation of these acts; a procedure to determine whether the acts are within the district school system; a procedure to notify parents and criminal authorities; a procedure to refer victims to counseling; among others. All forms of bullying and harassment are unacceptable and can cause long term effects on a child's self-esteem. If your child has suffered an injury or mental anguish as a result of a bully at school, it may be necessary to consult a lawyer to assure your child's well-being. Alisia Adamson is an attorney at Hylton, Adamson, Watson & Moore, a full service law firm located in downtown Orlando. We offer free consultations, and may be able to tell you if you have legal recourse for dealing with a school bully. you may contact

interview by christopher Walker

Lucille O’neal has her own story to tell, and it's not just about raising an nBA sports superstar. In her new book, "Walk Like you Have Somewhere To Go," Lucille O'neal shares the intimate details of her life; from her struggles with alcoholism and teen pregnancy to the joy of being able to get a college degree as an adult. now as a motivational speaker and devout Christian, Lucille O'neal shares her public battles and personal struggles as a young, single mother of nBA legend Shaquille O'neal. ms. o’neal, thank you for taking time to share with our readers; as you are highly regarded, well respected, and esteemed by our team. It is a blessing to do this interview and be able to share some of my thoughts with the readers of this magazine. You have written a book entitled, “Walk like You Have Somewhere to Go.” What inspired you to write that book? Let me tell you that I am primarily inspired by my own (four) children and the many people I have met throughout the years. When I shared with my own children the dream of wanting to write a book one day, they encouraged me to go ahead and write my story! We’ve heard it said that “words will never hurt you” but I believe that they can hurt you or harm you in many ways. I am a true witness to that fact. It is my sincere belief that the words written in my book will help somebody and for that reason alone I remain inspired. Growing up i read that you were six feet tall by the time you were twelve. now we know where Shaq got his height. How did you deal with that as a child? When I was a child this was hard for me because I 36

www .G ospel Now. Net

did not want to be tall at all. In my book I share the pain of growing up and being different than my peers. I was afraid of a lot of things and felt so unloved; however, having gone through that experience allowed me to to my own children talk

about it. Three of them are taller than the average person their age! Trust me…it took some getting used to! many people would like to know what lucille o’neal does on a daily basis. Well, I have a full schedule and that depends on what day of the week it is! I like to tell people…whatever God has me to do is what I do on a daily basis! When I am not traveling I love to work in our church’s office. It is an honor for me to be able to work for God in the kingdom and utilize the skills He has blessed me to obtain. I know I am on a God-assignment right now especially since I was not hurting for anything else to do. When I am not in Orlando, I am speaking at one function or another out of town and I am still out promoting my book. i see you are the Keynote speaker for an upcoming Single mothers conference in central Florida on march 4th. What advice would you give single mothers who are struggling to raise children by themselves with limited resources? everything concerning resources is limited. The first advice I would give them is to stop worrying about what you do not have, and work with what you do have! Being a mother is enough responsibility and you do not need to compile that with worry. did you ever imagine that you would raise an nba Superstar? How did it feel when Shaq became one of the first draft picks? no, I never imagined I would raise an nBA Superstar and I do not take credit for that. My son is a gift from God and God has given him a special gift too! It felt really special when he was chosen as the first draft pick in 1992…the best of the best! I look at it as a special, special blessing. He has always worked hard and still does to stay ahead of the competition. I’m so proud of the man he has become.

i understand that you are the president of the nba mothers association. What does that organization do? The Mothers of Professional Basketball Players, Inc. is a community oriented organization compiled of Mothers of the nBA, D-League, european Leagues and WnBA players active and retired. Our mission is to support the communities where our sons and daughters live, work and play. over the past 16 years, you have become one of the best-known mothers of a celebrity athlete. Why do you think that happened? I believe this has happened because I am out in the community doing what I can to make a difference and I don’t try to hide either. It is not necessary and I don’t need to try and impress anybody…what you see is what you get! i had an awesome opportunity to speak with you about your church and your faith what would you like for the readers to know about that? Pastor Walker, I’d like the readers to know that I am a child of the most High God and I have a strong faith in God today. In the words of BeBe Winans, “I am just a sinner saved by grace.” What’s next for lucille o’neal? What dreams and aspirations do you have at this point in your life? What’s next? I continue to dream BIG, and one of my dreams is to write another book as well! In addition to that, I aspire to go further in the ministry and continue to evangelize at every opportunity. God has given me a platform and I am blessed in many ways. I praise God and continue to give Him the glory for the things He has done for me. PRAISe GOD!!!!

Add the squash and reduce the heat to low; cover and simmer, undisturbed, about 25 minutes. Sprinkle the chicken over the rice mixture, cover and remove from the heat. ave you considered what you will do with the extra 2% in take-home pay that you will receive in 2011? The 2010 Tax Relief Act (H.R. 4853) not only extended the expiration dates of many current tax rates but also reduced the Social Security payroll tax by two percentage points for the 2011 tax year. An extra 2% might not seem like much, but it could be an opportunity to make a difference in your financial future.

eliminate cRedit-caRd debt Two-thirds of Americans who file for bankruptcy attribute the main cause of their financial problems to credit cards.1 If you have credit-card debt, consider how it might be interfering with progress toward your longterm goals. The average variable interest rate on credit cards is more than 14%.2 Thus, a borrower with a $5,000 credit-card balance and a 14.5% interest rate would pay $1,872 in interest to retire the debt, assuming $125-per-month payments for 55 months — that’s about four and a half years! If you have racked up some bills on your credit cards, consider using the extra 2% in take-home pay to help reduce or eliminate the debt, which could free up more of your future income to save and invest. incReaSe RetiRement plan contRibutionS experts often recommend that you try to give your retirement plan a raise every year by increasing your contribution by an extra 1% or 2%. Putting the extra 2% you will get this year toward your workplace retirement plan is a relatively painless way to accomplish this objective. For a worker earning $75,000 a year, the 2% payroll tax cut would be worth an extra $125 per month in takehome pay. By contributing $125 more each month for 25 years to an account earning a hypothetical 5% average annual return, a worker could accumulate an extra $74,440 toward retirement. Of course, this assumes the extra 2% contributions continue to be made even after the payroll tax cut expires after 2011. However, if the

worker receives annual pay increases, he may be able to use them to maintain the higher contributions in future years without experiencing a reduction in take-home pay. This hypothetical example is used for illustrative purposes only and does not represent the performance of any specific investment. Fees and expenses are not considered and would reduce the performance described if included. Actual results will vary. In 2011, the contribution limit for 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans is $16,500 (or $22,000 for workers age 50 and older). If you aren’t making the maximum annual contribution to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, consider using the additional income to increase your monthly contributions. It could help you accumulate more for retirement. need a loan

y

ModiFiCation? THREE (3) MISTAKES NOT TO MAKE

ou fixed your credit, saved money for closing, viewed a dozen homes, and finally purchased your piece of the American Dream. now, your dream has turned into a nightmare and you wish someone would wake you up. Or, maybe you owned a home and when property values skyrocketed, it made sense to tap into your equity. Then, the bubble burst and not only is your equity gone, but worse, you are underwater.

Currently, almost 500,000 homes are in preforeclosure across the country. The good news is lenders don’t want your home. Banks make money by collecting interest not by selling property. If you successfully navigate through their often dysfunctional systems, you can obtain a modification which addresses the arrears and even lowers your payment. I have been helping homeowners fight foreclosure for five (5) years, and have repeatedly witnessed people making three big mistakes. MISTAKe nuMBeR One IS WHen HOMeOWneRS GIVe uP TOO eASILy. Remember, almost half a million homes are in pre-foreclosure with thousands more loans in trouble. The lenders are inundated with modification applications; guidelines keep changing and the rate of employee turnover is high. This means, you may get told no before you are told yes. you may be asked to send the same documents over and over because they get lost or are old by the time your file gets reviewed, but don’t give up. Perseverance is the key. THe SeCOnD BIG MISTAKe IS THAT PeOPLe IGnORe THe COuRT CASe. Once you are served, it’s not enough to just work with the lender. There is now an attorney involved that has been hired to do one

thing; foreclose. It’s in your best interest to make the case last as long as possible so you have time to reach a resolution with the lender. Think about foreclosure as being like a football game. If your team doesn’t show up to the game, you lose. When you don’t file an answer or show up to a hearing, you lose by default. nOT SAVInG MOney IS THe THIRD BIGGeST MISTAKe. It always confounds me when a client who has not made a mortgage payment in months or years and is working has no money saved. I can’t express my frustration when a lender agrees to a modification only to find out the homeowner doesn’t have any money. In most cases, the bank only asks for one month of the new lower amount. If you are working and not paying a mortgage and still spending everything you make, how are you going to afford making the modified payment no matter how low it is? Avoid making these three big mistakes and you can fight foreclosure and win. WRitten bY micHelle t. maRtin-StRauGHteR Author, Financial Coach & CeO of Dream Achievers, Inc.
